Speaking of Shifting...

On my Breakin oil,,, my ST shifted perfect... I put plain Rotella in and the shifting was very stiff... I was going to go to 1,000 miles and then switch over to Synthetic but,,, moved that up with the way the shifting was acting... The moment I put the Rotella Synthetic in??? It was quieter,,, and shifts perfect again...

Mobil 1 MX4T 10/40 syn . Used it for five years in my V-Max . Switched to it at 550 miles on the ST , no problems . Also use Mobil 1 in the final drive . It gets one of the best ratings in MCN'S oil comparisons .

Amsoil 10w40 Synthentic

My 45,000 mile 1991 has proven to be sensitive to various oils. The clutch slipped at WOT above 5,000 RPM when it was purchased at 32,000 miles. The previous owner said Castrol was used, the slipping stopped with Honda GN4 10w40. I wanted synthetic, with Rotella Syn, 5w40 there was little or no slip. However the Blankstone analysis showed high iron content, 37 PPM for a 5,000 mile run.

I tried Mobil 1 15w50 Extended Performance, the results were disastrous, during several passes in 4th under WOT, the RPM went to 5,000 normally then to 8,000 real fast - a whole lot of slipping going on. The M1 got dumped at 357 miles.

Amsoil is inconvient to purchase - a full case at a reasonable price or $8.99 per quart in singles. I thought the M1 15w50 would be safe since a Butler Labs showed virgin 15w50 had less moly than Mobil's MX4T. The bike is now filled with Rotella 15w40 diesel/dino, in attempt to clean out the M1 moly. If the slipping stops, Honda GN4 is going back in.

If the slipping does not stop, it looks like clutch frictions and springs is next. The Honda Manual shows a couple of special tools. Are these necessary? Does anyone have any clutch replacement tips?

Update 4/12/2005: With 522 miles on the Rotella dino 15w40, the slip has moved from 5,000 to 5,800-6,200, WOT in 4th. The saga continues.

Mobil 1 MX4T synthetic changed every 3K miles. My experience comes from Mobil 1 V-Twin on Harleys and Buell X1 so I kept the Mobil 1 brand for Honda.

Using Castrol ActEvo 10W40 semi-synthetic oil, purcased at my Honda STealer for about $14.00 a gallon. So far so good--no clutch slippage and smooth shifting.

Can you link to a specific article(s)?
Could you provide specific information?

I have read an MCN article where they found no benefit to motorcycle specific oils.

None of these sites compare the filters for single pass efficiency and capacity, the two main standard measures of filter performance. That's like taking apart different motorcycles and trying to guess which one performs better by looking at the parts.

I use car oil in my bike and bike oil in my car. I am very confused.
My bike has 67,800 miles and runs juST fine. My car has 110,700 miles and runs juST fine.....

Or is it car oil in my car and car oil in my bike. I can't remember now.

Mobil 1 Red Cap Synthetic. They still sell it here, at WalMart.

No sign of the new Mobil mileage based (red/blue/gold) oils on the shelves, that I can see. I think us guys in the GWN have to clean up the old stuff before we get the new & improved version. ("New improved" likely just applies to the price though ;) ).

Are you saying that all the marketing strategies out there might be just more mumbo jumbo??? That bikes and cars now operate at the same temperatures and just might be able to use the same oil? What's the world coming to if we can't absolutely believe what we see/read on the commercials. Ideas like yours could cause a complete collapse of our economy...
