Trying to install the top box, but need help from someone who has installed it. Does the bottom plate mount solid to the silver rail or should there be some give? I can't tell from the "outstanding instructions" that were sent with the box.
I'm not sure what spacers I should be using, following what I think is correct the plate is somewhat loose and so I thought I would ask one of the experts on here that has installed one.
Thanks in advance for any help someone can give me.

You gotta love those 'instructions'.
The black plastic plate on the rack stays put although the hardware swapped out when you mount the metal top box plate.
The metal top box plate is spaced off of the original plastic rack.
The plastic top box plate is attached to the metal top box plate utilizing the plastic and rubber pieces to allow about 1/4" shift left and right. It won't be really loose, just able to have a little lateral motion.
I highly recommend a dab of silicone on the plastic caps that cover the hardware. Even though they don't come out easy, given the right bump, they can pop straight up and out. For those of you that already lost one, I got CBXman (http://www.cbxman.com) to carry them.

Thanks guys for the help, once I put the black plastic plate on again, then things fell into place, but not sure yet if I've put the right spacers in the front two screws, the small ones are between the plate and plastic piece and the longer ones which were on there from the factory are installed under the bracket, but when top box is installed there is a slight up and down movement from the front.
Both of the nuts on the front bolts are run up tight against the spacers, which seen to have centered in the holes. Is this movement normal or have I screwed something up.
Box looks fantastic on the bike, happy with it once I found out what I was doing wrong.
Thanks again for the hlep.
It sounds right from your description, as I recall.
The metal plate should be completely solid. There should be no up and down movement anywhere. The plastic plate that mounts to the metal plate will have a small amount of side to side movement.
Are you sure the nuts on the forward two bolts are tight? I ask because I believe they are nylocks and might feel snug but have only hit the nylon leaving more room for tightening. It's kind of tough to get a wrench on them with the awkard, limited space under there.

I've checked the nuts and as far as I can tell they are as tight as I can get them. I think the problem is the larger spacer is either pushed up into the mounting hole or the length of it doesn't allow the bolt to be tighten enough to fully pull the plastic plate down against the rail.
Going to play with it again over the weekend and see what I can figure out to ensure it's solid.
Thanks

Are you intalling the Hondaline box or a GiVi?
