I had to plug a tire (got a new one ordered), and noticed some black stuff coming out of the spline area where the rear tire goes in the sline. It might be someting is wrong with the seal. The stuff is old and powdery, just wondered if this is serious to take to the dealer or maybe I should just wait to check this when I get the tire in the mail?

I would wait 'til tire time. POWDERY?..I would make sure to checkout everything of course but don't forget the condition of the o-ring on the driven splines. AND pop off the snap ring and eyeball the dampers.

Thanks, this is going to be my first rear wheel removal for me. I looked at the calsi instructions, don't seam too complicated. I just have bad luck when it comes to vehicle repair and maintenance.

Yea, the left pic is where the stuff is coming from. The bolt is leaking too. I never had that on the 03 but looks I have to torque the bolts and check the fluid or grease when i replace the tire. Its not much coming out 'cause nothing is reaching the garage floor. I just wiped the area to see if more is leaking out on my ride home from work today.

THe bike only has 2700 miles, I haven't worked on it yet. The stealer may have overfiled it. How do you check final drive oil? Is that on Mark's site?

B..When you said old and powdery I was concerned. If you say yours looks like the pic then I see some minor weepage with road duST/dirt on it. Don't worry, wipe it off and ride.

BTW. 2700 miles ain't old :-)

On a level surface, pop her up on the CS. Remove the right bag and pull the large plug (17mm wrench) If there's oil to the bottom of the threads or a bit runs out, that's good. GO RIDE

My first ST had the splines greased real good, enough to give a few blackish streaks as if something was leaking. This was primarly noticed after a good hard run. Wiped it off a few times and it stopped.
