I don't need tires yet but am in the research process . I lean toward Avon ST's having used them on other bikes :D So the question is does anyone know the difference between a 170/60 rear and a 180/55 rear . My local shop has Michelins in those sizes and side by side the 180 seems wider and lower . So how much wider can I go without hitting the swingarm . Thanks for any input .

Of course the 180 is wider. Do the math and you see that it is also lower. 180 x .55 = 99, 170 x .6 = 102. Therefore your speedo will be even more off, and the odo will now run fast. The ST does not have a wide enough wheel for a 180 as per most manufactures specs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn’t the speedo run off the front tire?
Thanks

On some bikes yes. I believe Normans remarkes are concerning a rear drive speedo.
No mention of bike juST tires. :-) Although Dan did att a pic of one of those slow blue ST300's.

The speedo on the ST is driven off the output shaft of the transmission. Therefore the speedo and odo assume a certain tire size and a certain gear ratio in the final drive. Both the speedo and odo use the same sensor.
