Looks like Arches has a couple group camping areas, one will handle a minimum of 11 people at $3/night and up to 35 people and the other larger one will handle up to 55 people.

Might be a great way to go for this one if we have enough interest.

I should be able to make it. It's the weekend before the Indy MotoGP and IndySTOC, but there ought to be plenty of time to get home and wash clothes... The new tent and sleeping bag should be broken in by that time.

Well, unfortunately, NNESToc is the same weekend. I am torn between the two. I would love to have one of those "This Bike Climbed Mt Washington" stickers for the KLR. And I would also like to do some reconnoitering around Moab on the KLR. Decisions, decisions!!!???

Well, Mac. That climb up Mt. Washington isn't so much compared to the red rocks around Moab. Just my HO.

I'm thinking I might need to try this one, pending everything else that seems to get in my way (I'm not going to say the word in this delicate company of retired folks)

Woohoo! Boss is out, let's partay! Take all that time off, he will never know. :p:

2100 miles for me to get there, mostly through the twisties of Ohio, Iowa and Nebraska. Well, the Zumo records its datapoints of the trip log every time you change direction, so I guess I could get through Nebraska with 2 or 3 datapoints.

I wish I had to endure the agonizing hardship of retirement like Coop, John A, O and Motomac. Then I could probably be there. Gosh, it must be a blast riding in Colorado and Utah!

You know, I might be able to make it after all... I'm in a new job now and this is far enough away so I could say like my cat died, or something and go.

If you never been to Utah Dennis you should really try to make it! Unblievable color and imagery! Bring a camera!

New Job? New Job?

You have your Grandparents funerals, your parents funerals, and sibling funerals. You ought to be able to get about every third Wednesday, Thursday, Friday off, Fred!

I have a really good friend that works in a 'service' job that is Tuesday through Saturday. He's been at it for 25 years, is a highly thought of employee...One drawback to the job is "NO SATURDAY OFF WITH OUT VACATION THE PRECEEDING WEEK! NO EXCEPTIONS" He was/is also a season ticket holder for the WSU Cougars. He went to his mothers funeral once a year (Husky Game) for years. Until he had to go twice in the same year:)

Edit/Add Hey! Go in today and tell your boss that one of your buddies suggested this action. Then when you really start pulling it, they will know you are sincere!

Definitely considering this one. I was thinking of going down via the Beartooth and Chief Joseph Scenic Highway but getting into fall; what are the chances of running into weather on those very high passes. I would think that in early September one should still be OK but a friend of mine said that he would not ride it except July and August and that has got me wondering.

What are your thoughts??

ST Dan
06-15-2008, 11:39 PM
I went through there the end of Aug. last yr, went through Beartooth at about 8am...it was 36 degrees, there was about a 1/8 inch of snow off the road but the road was clear though....they say you get snow there any time...worse case scenario you have to go around....

Nothing really involved, pack your gear, get to the site and set up, ride when and where you want, tell some stories around the campfire at night. Its all about camping and riding and sharing your experiences with others and making new friends. :biker:

Got snow on Beartooth one year on Labor Day. Summer is pretty short there. Moab is a whole different thing, been there many Septembers, great weather.

Last time through I camped at the Portal RV Resort. The tent sites all had a covered table area. They also have a spring fed pond, which was pretty nice since it was 100 degrees that day (end of June).

I think I'm still in for this. Was planning to head to the midwest after, might get to WiSTOC, IndySTOC, and Nat/TXSTOC after that. Can I get another month off?

Oh, wait, I'm _retired!!!_ Guess I can...

GO RIDE!!!

...anytime I want. :D

Then again, can I afford $5/gal for another 7,000 miles? (doing the math: 7000miles/45mpgX$5.00=$777.77) plus a few hundred more for incidentals, like food, camp grounds, etc. Also, that's about 2/3rds use out of a set of tars. And an oil change. And, and, and... there's always a hidden expense.

Right now I need a left mirror and complete mirror cover/turn signal.

Don't ask.

I would really like to attend but, being a newbie, got a question.

The tent, air mattres and sleeping bag part is easy.

What do you do for food?

I have gone on overnight trips on the dirt bike where all you needed was some beef jerkey, a can of beans and some hot dogs but, this is for several days.

I have seen some of the camping posts where people have small one burner stoves but, where do you store food for several days?

I feel like the young pilgrim Jeremiah Johnson .

The tent crew runs the gaumet from gourmet to gummy bears (me.) Do whatever feels good. I've often said I'm not a camper, I just happen to sleep in a tent.

Common practice is to pick up some dinner toward the end of the day's riding, bring it back to camp and consume as appropriate.

Grab either breakfast, lunch, dinner nearby in town?

That is what I was kind of thinking. Just wondered if I needed to bring the single burner Coleman and a couple bottles of LP.

Some will bring more stuff... I usually bring a single burner just in case I want to bring some soup or stew back or make coffee.

But, no problems with eating in town, not at all..

I-70 Glenwood Canyon "Million Dollar Highway" is kind of nice.

Putt will probably have a more scenic route. Give him a PM.

I-70 is the fastest and, the Glenwood canyon is nice but, you are clipping along at a pretty good speed on the highway.

Stop in Glenwood for a soak in the hot springs.

Hmmm... If you were gonna ride from GGSP to Moab,
This is a nice route: Around 500 miles or so, so a kinda long day,
but you could break it up by staying in Montrose instead of
Glenwood Springs, or mayby by-passing the first part of the route
and entering from Glenwood Springs on Rt.82 maybe??

Ok, I 70 to just West of Frisco, catch Co 91 South to 82.. Take a right on 82, follow that to Carbondale (takes you over Independance Pass, thru Aspen etc.) At the junction of 82 and 133 in Carbondale, take a left and stop at the diner on your right, food is not too bad... Follow 133 to 92, hang a left, follow 92 to US 50 (enjoy the ride and the view of the Black Canyon). Catch US 50 West to Montrose, spend the night... Or, hang a left on 550 and go to Ridgway and go right on 62.. Follow 62 West to 145, follow 145 to 141 and bear right.. Follow that back to US 50, hang a left at
Gateway, pick up I-70 Westbound again at Grand Junction for a few miles,
cross over into Utah and look for the Cisco Ut. exit (rt6) that will take you to 128, hang a left, and follow that to Moab....

Now, you could by-pass 141 and just take Co 90 on over to Utah and then up to Moab, but you really don't want to do that :)

Actually, I need to clarify...I'm stopping at TenSToc on the homeward side of a significant asphalt safari through CO UT and NV. I'm arriving at GGSP on Friday, 29 Aug and heading for Glenwood Springs on Saturday the 30th. On Sunday I'll leave Glenwood Spring via I70 to Ely, NV to stay with a friend for a few days and ride around over there. From Ely, it's on to Arches for TentSToc. On Sunday after TentSToc, I head for another CO State Park just pass Salida, but will get there via Durango and Montrose.

Must find and ride as many curvy/scenic roads as is safely possible.

Looking for any suggestion on the finest curvy asphalt that CO and UT have to offer. I know what looks squigly on the map but always looking for suggestions.

Highway 12 in UT between Torrey and Bryce Canyon. It is the finest motorcycle road in the USA.

US50 in Colorado over Independence Pass, then sidetrip to Leadville. After Labor Day, the road through the Rocky Mt National Park is nice, you end up in Estes Park, CO. Before Labor Day, Estes Park is kind of a zoo, after the crowd is gone, it is pretty nice.

East of Arches, just over the state line in CO, what is 141 like from, Gateway down to Vanocorum?

And also, a question to those more experienced riders of the CO mountain passes, what will the temps be like in early Sept.? A fleece under the jacket or pack a heated vest?

Not sure if it was on this website, motocampers or advriders, but I remember reading/seeing some comments and photos that looked like something from a Road Runner cartoon...sick hairpins without guardrails, drops offs that make your blood run cold, and WAY down below is a road leading you to next moutain that you climb back up... heavenly....

...Sorry, was day dreaming... anyhow, I think they were saying it was down by Mexican Hat, UT. Does that sound right to those of you familiar with the area? Please point me in the direction of the Road Runner and Wille E Coyote roads.

Hey George, is that lake shore road paved?

Yessir. Pick it up just north of Hoover Dam at the Lake Mead visitor center, follow it up thru Overton (stop at the ice cream parlor on your left) to I-15 just past Logandale. The only way to go from there is i-state to Littlfield, AZ. I recommend staying with I-15 thru Virgin River Gorge, prolly the best stretch of interstate anywhere.

From St. George, follow state route 9 thur Zion Park and on east from there.

See ya at TentSTOC.

These are the campgrounds listed on the site for Arches, looks like only water is at Devils Garden, and no showers period. Need to decide on a campground so all can congregate at one spot. There is also a burning ban in Utah, notice included

The Devils Garden Campground is a great place to begin your exploration of Arches.

The Devils Garden Campground is located eighteen miles from the park entrance and is open year-round. Facilities include potable water, picnic tables, grills, as well as both pit-style and flush toilets. There are no showers. Bring your own wood or charcoal for the grills. Some sites will accommodate RV's up to 30 feet in length.
Telephone and on-line reservations for both group and individual sites may be made through www.recreation.gov. Reservations are not accepted by the park, and the park does not maintain information about site availability.
Individual Sites
The campground has 52 individual sites which are $15 per night and will accommodate up to ten people. Up to 28 of the individual sites may be reserved for nights between March 1st and October 31st. Reservations must be made no less than 4 days and no more than 240 days in advance. There is an additional $9 booking fee for reservations. To make a reservation, visit www.recreation.gov, or call (877) 444-6777, (877) 833-6777 (TDD), or (518) 885-3639.
The remaining 24 campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis each day beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the park entrance station or visitor center.
Group Sites
The campground has two sites for groups of eleven or more people. The Juniper Basin campsite will accommodate up to 55 people; the Canyon Wren campsite up to 35. The group camping fee is $3 per person per night, with a $33 per night minimum. No recreational vehicles or trailers are permitted in the group sites.
Group campsites may be reserved year-round. Reservations must be made no less than 4 days and no more than 360 days in advance. There is an additional $9 booking fee for reservations. To make a reservation, visit www.recreation.gov, or call (877) 444-6777, (877) 833-6777 (TDD), or (518) 885-3639.
Unreserved group campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of arrival.

Fire Restrictions To Be Implemented In Southeastern Utah
Utah … The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Utah State Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (DFFSL) have implemented fire restrictions on three major river ways. The hot and dry weather has dried vegetation and raised fire potential.
The river corridors that will be under fire restriction include; the Green River (from Swasey Beach to Canyonlands National Park), the Colorado River (from the Colorado/Utah border to Canyonlands National Park) and the San Juan River (from Bluff to Glen Canyon National

Best I remember there's a 'commercial' campground in Moab proper on the main drag as you head away from the park through Moab - almost at the end of town on the left. It had all the basic amenities and nice shaded camping spots that we used the last time I did the Arches. With a nice steak house diagonally across the street! If the Moab Diner is still open (up toward the park end of town), it's a mighty fine place for grub also.

We need a min of 11 people at $3/person to reserve the Juniper Group campsite.. looks like 14 are planning on showing up with another possible 11+...

I've added a poll to see how many are Tent camping vs. a lodge/cabin/hotel in the area... Then we'll see what we have to work with.

Danny K at tent SToc?

Big Tom is clearly reconsidering his options. My buddy Ray is going to make a pass at the 200 mph club at the Salt Flats the week before. I'd like to think I'd be able to stop in on the way back. Just another one of my short cuts:)

He may not have his Haybus in shape for the run, in which case he will postpone a year. In which case I might just run up to Moab, anyway.

I had a great experience Forest Service camping this weekend at 666SToc. My first effort with an inflatable bed. Puts me back on the list of liking to camp!

I've been curious about these STOC events and this seems like a good, reasonably close one to check out. Plus there are some hikes in Arches I've haven't done yet and September is an optimal month for getting great sunrise photos over in Canyonlands NP, particularly of the Mesa Arch (http://www.wildnatureimages.com/Photos_of_Mesa_Arch.htm).

So unless the passes between Colorado Springs and Moab get closed by snow/ice, you can count me in! Oh and I'll be tenting at the campground

Putt...

Yep...I had to do exactly that in mid-May of '07 for a trip to Dead Horse SP (just a bit west of Arches). IIRC, the central Colorado mountains got about a foot of snow the night before I left and passes like Monarch had over a foot of new snow...and stayed icy/snow packed for a day or so afterwards. But even the "southern route" on that trip wasn't ideal...it was rather chilly and there was some new snow along the road even in New Mexico.

When I got up this mid-August morning and looked at Pikes Peak ( I have this killer view of Pikes Peak from my home (http://www.rockymtnray.us//images_general/pikespeak/PikesPeak_Sunrise_05252002A_1.JPG)), even I was surprised to see a pretty heavy coating of snow down as low as about 10000 feet. And CDOT's road report is currently showing snow and snow pack conditions on several of the passes...even as low as Vail Pass at 10,600.

I do a lot of hiking/backpacking during the summer and have learned over the past 10 years that by the end of August/early September there's about a 4 in 10 chance of a fairly serious snowstorm in the Colorado high country (over 10,000 feet).

OTOH, there's also a good likelihood of 90+ temperatures at the lower elevations in that same timeframe. So for this trip I'm planning on packing both the shorts and the heated clothing/fleece! And I just finished installing heated grips and a heated seat on my STeed! :)

[edit]
P.S. Here's a link to the top story in today's Colorado Spring's Gazette (http://www.gazette.com/articles/gutierrez_39402___article.html/peak_won.html) about the miserable winter-like conditions experienced yesterday by the runners in the Pikes Peak Ascent

I don't mean to be telling you boys any of your business, but if you are going to go as far south as Farmington, you might as well go to Safford, AZ and bust the 191 where it's best:) You will never regret that ride:)

I should have just looked at your map. :doh1: I was trying to find the Juniper campground on the NPS site.

Probably once in the park, the sites & attractions will have decent signage. Also, the traditional map/brochure that is handed out, at the gate, will show it better.

I too thank Putt for his generous offer to let us use his motel shower but there might be some problems if all of us took him up on it.

Moab is very popular with bicyclists, hikers, backpackers, back country campers, etc. who get pretty pungent and, as a result, there are a whole bunch of businesses in the town (http://www.discovermoab.com/shower.htm) that provide public shower facilities at a pretty reasonable cost per shower (typically around $3.00~$4.00). Most are right along the main street (US 191) and some are just a mile or two from the turn off into Arches NP.

I'm personally planning to swing by the Slickrock Campground every day or so to use their showering facilities.

Ray, on a side note... I know you said you two were going.. and I'd love to see you two again but I'm a bit worried that the trip might make your throat worse than it already is, especially since the actual issue doesn't seem that clear..

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't somehow confused. I originally told Hope it was on Labor Day weekend. She promptly corrected me on when Labor Day weekend was.

I was thinking the same thing about my throat. I think I'm on the road to recovery and have two weeks to change my mind. OTOH, I just don't see how it could get any worse. I subject myself to allergens of all sorts each week. A good ride is good therapy.

BTW, it's not contagious. I was on a job and a contractor asked me something. I had to get close to him to answer and explained I have laryngitis. He jumped back and said, "I don't want it!"

North Rim is much prettier (my opinion) and the roads are better in that area. No good roads on the south rim and too much traffic. Neither is remote, there's plenty of civilization. Weather shouldn't be an issue. See ya at Arches and/or on the road.

Ooohhh, how freaky! How fun! I got just the place! But it's in California... I was just up there a couple of weeks back doing my Angeles Crest ride and thought this would be a nice ST camping place... Called....

BUCKHORN! (http://tchester.org/sgm/places/buckhorn_campground.html)

Up in nice cool higher elevations (6-7k feet) in the Angeles National Forest Backcountry; a feel of Sierra alpine and next to the Angeles Crest Highway running sweet ridin' curves east and west. And I understand they may have the eastern end open by then.

But... I understand that a lot of you guys come in from all points east, west, south and north, so maybe a more "centerlized" location would be better. I'll kick it around...

Is Tentstoc a western states thing?

The bike has a fresh oil change, the tires and brakes are good, and the camping equipment is packed. Guess I am just about ready. I am planning on leaving here Thursday and arriving at the campground about mid-day Friday. Looking forward to meeting some new folks

Fred, am I supposed to take the West Coast banner with for this event? It's a long way from the west coast. Also, I'm gonna be on the road for a month.

Either way, I'll have it at SeaSTOC in a few weeks.

I'm just getting in the shower (after pulling the starter off "the Hulk" for a look see). All packed, be leaving here in an hour or so. No rush, only 6 or 8 hunnert miles going the long way.

I might have to leave there on Saturday to make it to Cody and meet LT Rider for the Pony Express handoff on Sunday. It'd be doable in a day on straight roads, but who wants to go that way!?

Tires, shop? Putt, isn't there someone with a HF or No-mar tire changer near by? Ya can't let a little thing like tires get in the way.

Actually, no one close.. I had them scheduled to be put on today, but had the funeral and all so that kind of prevented that.. If I could have had them put on tomorrow, I still could have made it out there with one less day of travel time (no big deal), but nope, can't get-er-done till Saturday... I guess
it is time to go visit my friendly HF store....

Got rained on a bunch. A deer wanted a ride on the back seat but it was just a little too slow.

Man the weather is nice!

All deer hits are claimed as, "There wasn't time to stop. It was just all of a sudden there." There has even been the occasion where the deer hits the side of the bike. Also, everyone tends to slow down when in deer territory.

So, if you are riding fast enough, you won't hit a deer. You will already be past where the deer crosses.

I'm in the Moab library. Saw two 1300s go past the Pancake Haus about 10 this morning headed north. I went riding, just got back here, nowheaded to the park.

I gotta leave here tomorrow morning, tho, to meet LT Rider in Helena, MT on Saturday for the Pony Express Handoff. Then, Casper, WY, Lincoln, NE, Pierre, SD, Bismark, ND, and St. Paul, MN.

Maybe I'll visit Aerostich on the way and get a zipper repaired. Also, plan to finally visit Bob's Java Hut in Minneapolis.

After all that, I'll be WiSTOC in Spring Green, then to Adam C's.

Catch some of youse guys on the road.

We are taking the long way back to Texas via the Grand Canyon, Four States, and a nice meandering ride back through Durango.

Here is a pic at the park and one on the way that I couldn't pass up.

Arches is an amazing place...and a fantastic place to camp. Perfect weather the whole time we were there.

The shoe tree is about 20-30 minutes east of Fallon, NV on hwy 50. We saw it as a unique roadside attraction on PBS. We caught a glimpse of it on our way to TentSTOC and just had to get a better look on our way home.
