View Full Version : Stebel Horn problem question

I fitted my stebel horn a couple of days ago.
And I'm having problems, I fitted an in line 10amp fuse as per the instructions. It worked fine. Then whilst out riding I used it to say hello to a mate on his bike as you do and it stopped the fuse had gone. I had no tens to replace it so put in a 15amp fine it worked again. Then whilst out today I used it to warn a van driver that I was passing him, he was lane wandering.
It blew the fuse again.
So my question is: as it's wired to include the stock horn incorperating the relay of course, should I be looking at 20 amp fuses. My theroy and this may be way wrong (as normal) if the stock horn uses 10amp and the stebel uses 10amp do I double up to 20amp. I've checcked all the wiring and all seems fine no shorts and all conected as should be I think. I followed the instructions on the side of the box (very unlike me)
Just had a thought the stock horn still works. That's confused me more.
Hope you lot can help.
Cheers Paul

What gauge wire are you running from the battery to the relay?

Are you running a new hot lead back to the battery? What gauge? A Stebel horn draws way more current than the stock horn. If you're using the stock wiring to power the horn, you may be overloading it.
Looks like Raven beat me to the draw :-)

And possibly fry the horn switch if it isn't relay driven.
I thought the twin stebel air horn was more like 20amps by itself?
(I haven't installed one yet)

Have a look at the schematic I posted in this thread. Notice AWG 12 wires for the horn and lights.

I used new wire not the stock I think it's 9/.30 10core, or thats all I can make out on the drum. I'am using a relay. Hope this sheds a bit of light and helps.

Gauge of wire won't change the current draw, smaller gauge wire will just burn up instead of the fuse. However, the Stebel calls for a 20 amp fuse.

Right did I read the box wrong is it the 24v that should be 10amp???

That would make more sense. If you wind the motor for 24v operation.
Volt*amps = power. So more or less you would expect a 12v motor to need twice the current for the same output.

Ok I think we got it sorted, :bow1: :bow1: :bow1:
I'm going for 20amp's.
And todays lesson for me is put the bloody glasses on before reading stuff through squinted eyes, it may help.
Many thanks as usuall guy's

Now I will be keeping an eye on this thread because someone is bound to come along screaming dont do it unless you carry a fire extinquisher..

Your motorcycle is 24volt, I thought all ST1100s and ST1300s were 12 volt systems which would be 20 amps.

I had the same experience. I blew out two 15A fuses before going back and having a look at the instructions. Turns out I needed a 20A one in there. I'm using a new 12GA wire from the battery to the Stebel relay, on to + terminal the horn and ultimately from the - terminal of the horn to ground. The stock horn wires are only used to trigger the relay. Since fitting the 20A fuse I've had no further issues.

I love this site, and I love the Stebel, had it ages and struggled to fit it but it should have been done weeks ago. I think because the ST is such a quiet bike the Stebel is a necessity not so much a farkle.

As Carl said, you may want to run your Stebel horn off a relay to get all of its juice, otherwise you risk blowing your stock horn switch and then you'll pay.

In my setup, I'm leaving the stock horn in the circuit, but patched the + side of the horn over to my relay, so both horns sound.

I took the easy way out and just ordered a wiring harness from Jim at www.easternbeaver.com. Followed his installation instructions and have never had a problem.

That's just what I did Gonzo, I slotted in the 20 amp first thing this morning, Gave it a couple of good long soundings and all is well, apart from the solicitors letter I've been promised by neighbour who I forgot was working the night shift....ooops.
Cheers Guys

The easy way out? What would be the fun in that?
Besides, I like to do it myself and save a couple pennies in the process.

Paul - where did you get the Stebel in the UK? There are some for sale on ebay at £14.99 +£5 postage - is that a good price?
Thanks

Cheers Paul,
Did you use the wiring that came with it, I've seen that a lot of folk on here recomend getting the wiring kit from Eastern Beaver (great name!! ) which I think I might do.

:crackup :crackup Now ya done it Paul, you'll need to get him some tea and "crumps" and some Red wine.
Like others have mentioned I used 12AWG wire on the + side, horn to relay and to my aux fuse block but OEM wire for the balance remaining. 20AMP fused. No problems to date and will mention don't have yer- head stuck up close to the horn to see if alls hooked up right & have your sweet one tap the horn button :o4:
Take care, ride safe and Cheers!
