Ride To Eat: Hutchinson, KS – Saturday, March 29 - Roy’s BBQ, Kansas Cosmosphere, plus Pie in Yoder on the way home.
We'll meet for lunch at Roy’s Hickory Pit Barbeque (1018 Nickerson Blvd, Hutchinson) at noon. This will give the KC guys some time to travel. The BBQ at Roy's is excellent.
After lunch, we'll ride to the Kansas Cosmosphere (1100 N. Plum St, Hutchinson.) The Cosmosphere (www.cosmo.org) has a German V1 and V2, an SR71, a T-38, a rocket sled, a 109 ft. Titan rocket, Russian and US space capsules (including the Liberty Bell 7, Gemini X, and Apollo 13 command module,) and innumerable other artifacts.
After touring the Cosmosphere, and letting the BBQ settle, we'll have some Pie at the Carriage Crossing in Yoder (a few miles south of Hutchinson) before heading home. Yoder is a little Amish community, but the Carriage Crossing draws people from all around.
Roginoz will buy lunch for the rider traveling the farthest. (Even the three-meat combo, if you're man - or woman - enough to tackle it.)
Roy's BBQ is in the POIs on your Zumo. Zumo says it's 239 miles from KCK, 3:41. Mapquest shows 221 miles from KCK, 3:40. Zumo says 51 miles from Wichita, 1:01. Mapquest shows 53 from Wichita, 1:05. Zumo says 586 miles from Lubbock, 8:48. (Riders from Lubbock get free pie, too.)

From KC to Hutchinson you could take 177 to Cassoday and head west from there on a little road on the north side of town that takes you to Newton. From there it is a straight shot to Hutchinson. :03biker:

You could come down to KC, pick up your bike, and hide to Hutchinson with Joe, Danny, & Co (if they can keep up with you.) Only 828 miles back to Cincinnati from Hutchinson. Free pie for blue eyed women from Ohio riding STs...

Those kevlars are hard to kill, man. The big ones are bullet-proof. Have to kill those bad boys with hand grenades. :D
Maybe you could go a little cheaper. I hear the naugas are pretty easy to kill and skin... :crackup
I think they do the baby Kevlars with an ice pick.

roginoz
02-12-2008, 11:13 PM
There are a number of hotels in Hutchinson, but Wichita is less than an hour away. If you want to go cheap, like I do, there's a Motel 6 on West Kellogg in Wichita. (BTW - your AMA membership will get you a "Corporate Plus" disount at Motel 6 - use code CP540176.) If you're looking to squander your farkle money on luxury, the Hotel at Old Town is nice (but your bike would be in a remote parking garage without much security.) I'd check the web for good deals. Stay away from north and south Broadway, and there aren't any motels in "bad" areas. (Besides, the hookers with good teeth are actually cops...) The west Kellogg locations are less expensive than downtown. There are a few places on East Kellogg, which are close to the Kansas Turnpike exit.

I should have the bike here by mid March or sooner. Well, that is the plan anyway. I hope that I can exercise restraint after being so long without my ride.
Free pie huh? Sounds might tempting. Heck I cant say it is too far... After all, I rode from KC to Casey, IL for a burger

Did I mention that they usually have about ten kinds of pie, including peanut butter cream cheese? I rode from Wichita to Galena, Illinois, for a cheeseburger last year. But I got fries, too. Not sure if I can get to Moonshine, it's right after the HSTA national rally in Texas. Maybe if I washed clothes before I left Kerrville, or just stood downwind. I see the opportunity for a cheeseburger grand tour. Ty's here in Wichita; Mear's Store near Lawton, OK; maybe someplace in West Texas that Coop knows about...

Well, by his own definition, Kooter is krazy. I was taught to be nice to crazy people. Coop's old, and I was taught to be nice to old people. BES is cute; didn't need any instructions there... Besides, we don't have to pay those inflated Kansas City prices for BBQ out here. And, I think pie is still only $2.50 in Yoder.

I'm just worried my wife will go in to labor. Hopefully she won't be on bed-rest or anything like that by the time this rolls around.
She asked me, "What if I go into labor while you're gone?" I thought one of three things could happen.
I could go and nothing happen. No Labor. This is ideal.
I could go, she go into labor, and I'm either late or miss it. She would be disappointed.
I could not go, and be disappointed about not going.
Knowing my luck, if I don't go, nothing will happen. If I do, we may have an early arrival.
Looks like somebody may be disappointed. Just wonder who it's going to be?

Go with the kid, theres always bike rides. If nothing happenes you can always set on the bike in the garage, drink a bunch of beer and pay the neighbor kid to shake it while you rev it up. After enough beer it gives the appearance of your riding. Next I will be moving the TV in to garage to simulate past rides. Not that i have any experience at this. But I keep falling off in the corners, hum, need to work on that.

Sorry Coop... If there was the slightest chance I would go but I'm still going back and forth to Oklahoma to help my Mom with stuff. Once that all settles down, I should have a less-hectic summer.
However, you never know how things will turn out so if a Blue Wing shows up then it shows up otherwise have a great time anyway - I know you guys can do that without me :doh1:

There are two Dairy Queens in Hutchinson. One of them is more-or-less on the way from Roy's BBQ to the Cosmosphere... We could stop for a group photo and a small cone. The tour of the Cosmosphere should still walk off enough of lunch to make room for pie in Yoder after we leave. Coop better check the tread depth on his tires - the extra weight on the return trip could increase the rate of wear.

Yes, we're still on! We won't know about the weather until a couple of days ahead of time - it's Kansas, after all. My ST is in pieces right now (finally installing the quartet harness, extra outlets, dash shelf, heated grips, etc.) On top of that, my Mom's in the hospital and I have taxes to do. I figure I have eleven days to get everything on and working. If it all goes to hell, I'll be the guy at Roy's riding the DRZ400S...

Chris - and any others coming north on I-35: There isn't any gas available on the Kansas Turnpike (I-35) between the Oklahoma border and Wichita. They're rebuilding the convenience store at the Bel Plaine service area. The McDonalds and the restrooms are still open. You probably ought to gas up before leaving Oklahoma. You can ride in to Arkansas City or Wellington for gas, but it's a bit of a detour.

If the group wants to, we can just stop at the DQ after lunch, on the way to the Cosmosphere. It might mean eating a little less BBQ, or being slightly overstuffed, but such sacriface is sometimes necessary on august occassions such as this.

I shot this by TLC and,,, well,,, if you are a betting man,,, it didn't look good... :nuke1:
I have the same shot at doing this ride when I asked on March 16th as Coop has of becoming a Mormon and marrying Britney Spears,,, Raquel Welsh,,, Pricilla Presley,,, and Halle Berry... :crackup
BUT,,, last night March 19th a crack in the iceberg leads me to say,,,
Coop,,, you Might be in for something more than "PIE" as my chances just shot up to a full 13.3%!!!

I'm finishing (I hope) my farkle installations this week. (Yeah, shoulda started two weeks earlier...) I'll be there regardless, even if I have to ride the Suzuki DRZ400 dual sport.
We should have good weather. The Weather Channel is predicting 60 for the high Saturday in Hutchinson, with lows of 32 and 42 on Friday and Saturday. Partly cloudy Saturday, with only a 10% chance of rain; chance of rain on Sunday is 20% in Hutchinson, and 30% in Wichita. (Clouds following Coop back south to Texas?)

ACL - Roy's BBQ is at 1018 Nickerson Blvd, in Hutchinson, KS. If you're using a Zumo, it's in the POI files. It's on the west edge of Hutchinson (not South Hutchinson) on the "old" road to Nickerson. MapQuest will get you there, too.

A rare laser used in the early space program is missing from the Cosmodrome...a tall man who many noted "has no ***" was last seen looking at it and mumbling about turn signals"
Also, an Apollo moon helmet has been replaced with a very large motorcycle helmet. No clues at this time to who made the switch, but there was a Buddy Holly Museum and Laundromat admission stub found in the display case....

It wasn't overheating. It was taking forever to warm up. I thought it was stuck open. But when I removed the old it jsut looked old. I had a spare sitting around anyway and it didn't take any real time since I had to replace the air filter too and did them both while I had the plastic off. Now I'm off to wash the beast and get the engine warmed up so I can be sure I have not leaks. :D

It`s almost ipossible for the 1100 style to stick open, they are different from the 1300`s. All 1100`s run very cool that I have had. This is not a bad thing on a carb. type bike, just ride and enjoy.

Good to see that you're all coming. I'll see you at noon tomorrow. Most likely, I'll be arriving by truck (I'll have to quit making fun of the Harley riders..) as the ST is still apart for farkles; close, but not done. (Still have to finish hooking up the JMCB2003 and get all the tupperware back in place.) My mom went into the hospital right after I started the project, and I've managed to catch a cold that's slowed me down (spent today in bed, mostly.) I think that BBQ and pie therapy is in order.

Good turnout: nine STs, one BMW, one Ducati, and one Dodge Dakota. Six states represented: Louisiana, Illinois, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas. clmixon came the farthest, I believe, with ACL, Coop, & DR1954 close behind. The weather wasn't as nice as we'd ordered, but we had a good time.

1010 milles for BBQ? Well there was pie and the cosmosphere was cool.
It was good seeing old friends and meeting new ones too.
We did learn that the black ST may be faster but gets the worst fuel mileage. Followed by Blue and then Red.

Pulled in at 9Pm tonight. Of course, I hit gully washer strength rain from Shreveport to South of Alexandria. :p:
Had a good time, 1963 miles showing for the round trip. Really impressed with Cosmosphere and everything else.
I have to add one thing, HEATED GEAR ROCKS!
I was extremely comfortable even in light rain and fog at 42 degrees. I was also nice when it was mid-60s and pouring rain. Just ran the shield up to visor blast, tuned the heat controls and ran along warm, dry and happy.

A good rule of thumb is, don't go south east to go north east. I left the cafe going the wrong direction and Jill gave me a good a$$ chewing until I turned around and started to act right.
