I've always wondered, why do most police departments issue 1/2 or 3/4 helmets and not modulars? Is it because of the comm systems?
What type helmet do you guys use off duty?

I personally don't use the full face modular helmet because I feel it blocks my side vision more than a 1/2 or 3/4 helmet. I use the 1/2 shell over the 3/4 due to the heat and humidity down here in Texas. The 1/2 shell gives you more air flow. Just my oppinion though. :-)

Over here in the UK, my force has Shoei MultiTec, did use to have Caberg things which we all hate.

I use an Arai when I'm on my own bike.

We now have the option of a full face modular (Multi-Tec) or 3/4. I went with the modular and love it. Off duty I have both, but opt for the full face most of the time.

I found with the Multi-Tec my peripheral vision was not much less than with the 3/4 with the face down. With the face up it is better.

What did you hate about the Cabergs? I got one recently but haven't used it yet as I haven't installed the mic and speakers. Tks Howard

I would have nothing other than full face for personal riding. LE, however, is different. You are constantly having to make contact with violaters not to mention you spend a lot of time sitting or driving slow. I know the modulars are easy to raise but just more things to do on an already busy environment. If I was working freeways exclusively or in cooler area maybe. I chose a 3/4 Shoie. A lot of guys use the 1/2 but I can not sacrafise that much protection in good faith.

They were the bottom of the range cheap plastic things. Our uniform department as always, buy what they think is right. They don't bother consulting the end user.

My mate has been on the bike team for just over two years and had two Cabergs in that time! Questions were asked about why he needed to change his helmet after 18 months. They couldn't understand that he rode everyday and he'd worn it out. The inside was next to dead. He told them to spend the extra on Shoei's and we/he wouldn't have to change helmets every 18 months!
