View Full Version : Riding Pants
I am interested in getting some riding pants for the warm/hot weather. Something preferably with armour in all the strategic places.
Is there anything out there that serves dual climates hot/cold? Or should I purchase seperately to handle temerature ranges?
I don't mind spending the dough on a quality product. If you also have feedback on where to purchase at a competitive price that's a plus. :) Sure would appreciate any feedback you folks have. Thanks

I wear the First Gear HT Air Overpants. With the liner in they are comfortable down into the 40's. With the liner out they provide great airflow for hot weather. The liner is also waterproof. I can personally attest to that.
They've never been used as overpants. Typically I just wear them over bicycle shorts. Easy on and off with zippers up and down each leg.
You can read more about them here:

Hope this helps.

If money is not a problem you can look at the Cycleport (http://www.motoport.com) stuff.
Their kevlar stuff is expensive but supposedly as tough at it gets. Their pants have armor from the knee down the shin and in the hip and thigh area. Their we site is crap, so email and/or call Wayne (owner). They build to order so the waiting list is long at this time of year.
I have a pair of AirMesh kevlar pants on order, + the goretext liner. Unfortunately they do not have an two part insulated liner (goretext and insulation unzip from each other) for the pants like they do for the jackets. Their mesh pants are 100% mesh. Not mesh in some places. The strenght of the material lets them accomplish this.
Most of the mesh stuff out there will not hold up very well in a crash. Most everything uses polyester. FirstGear MeshText is polyester.

I've got the First Gear HT Mesh Overpants. As for the liners being waterproof, I used to think so, but after the rainstorm we rode through Friday, I have to downgrade them to water resistant. First it was 40+ mph winds, then HEAVY rain, then hail the size of marbles! After the hail, it was more wind and heavy rain for some time until we rode out of it, then the rest of the way it was just raining. The crotch of my jeans was damp and I was uncomfortable. In the future I'll be taking along a set or real rain gear. I think the HT mesh pants are just fine for light sprinkles, but they're not up to heavy rain. My wife had the same complaint as did some others in our group. :rain1: :rain1: :rain1:

I've had the FG Air Mesh Overpants and have been in some very heavy rain for extended periods and they have yet to leak on me...
I like them because in cooler 35-40 degree weather, and with the liner in, they are warm enough for me... My legs never really get cold anyway.
I wear these pants year-round and they've never felt hot in the summer, with the liner out of course.
They have good knee armor and they are the easiest pants to put on I've had.

Thanks for the feedback. It's all good. I need some clarity here on specifics to what the FG website has on it. Could you identify from this webpage what pants you have. Would appreciate.

Great customer service, really nice overpant. Make sure you specify you want the new design which zips all the way up to the waist. Wear them everyday, haven't had the hottest weather yet but they also have a zip out lining when it's chilly. Plus a great deal on a 3/4 length in the close out section. :04biker:

Joe - do the FG Air Mesh Overpants have a zipper that will attach to FG jackets?

I've got 130,000 miles on my Aerostich Darien pants now and they still look almost new, and perform like new. I went down and slid on them when they had about 56,000 miles on them and had the left side of them rebuilt. Have ridden in them in temp ranges from 15F to 115F. When it gets that cold, the fleece liner pants are mucho important.
I replaced my Darien jacket this year after 120,000 miles of faithful service, but the pants just keep going. Good ballistic kneepads and optional shinpads if you need them.
I can't see myself ever buying anything else.

I am planning on ordering a pair of motoport Kevlar pants. There are 3 different pairs that I am evaluating. The Kevlar Air, Ultra II, and Ultra II lights. Currently I am thinking of getting the Air model. Any input would be appreciated.

The new FG HT Air 2.0 have new armor in the thighs and they are supposed to have a zipper that attatches to their jackets.

Cycleport has two types of Kevlar. The stretch kevlar and the mesh kevlar. I have the Mesh kevlar and I would go that way since it will breath better behind a fairing. The knee and shin armor keeps the radiator exhaust off you shins and the leg/thigh armor will keep your thighs warm. In hot weather you might want to take the thigh armor off but I have been in 108+ and my thighs were not the part of me most annoyed by the heat. To each his own. The leg/thigh armor does let you wear the mesh pants in pretty cool conditions without any liner. For me at least the thighs always get cold due to the air brushing over them.

I purchased a pair of Rukka trousers recently (pants as you call them) and tested them the other day in a torrential downpour. It was so bad the rain was horizontal
Guess what, they are the first pair I have ever owned that did not leak at all, for a change. I think time will tell with them, but for the cost, they are very expensive, I expect them to be waterproof and breathable etc.
Armour in all the right places and very snug fitting, wifey told me that I looked slimmer in them so I now go to bed in them with the hope that I can turn her on and the lights out LOL (I should be so lucky, lucky lucky lucky! as Kylie Minogle sang. Nope, cant spell her name either)
I have been so impressed with them, I have now ordered the Rukka jacket to go with them....No I am not a rich guy, it is just to save having to pay the taxman :D

Ditto What NormanPCN said. Go for the Cycleport/Motorport mesh Kevlar.
Especially if you're mainly going to be riding the ST or another bike with good wind protection. Otherwise, you might start to get too hot and not want to wear your armour...
I've worn the pants through hot desert, solid rain, and freezing cold. Way better than cordura or other synthetic pants I have worn. Had them two years now. I have rarely needed to use the pant Gortex liner unless it was really wet or really cold. I usually wear jeans or shorts underneath. (The jacket is a different story - I leave the Gortex liner in until it gets hot out).
I would use the non-mesh kevlar if you were into racing (better protection than leather), otherwise, why be unnecessarily hot if the protection is already adequate?

I am just getting my Darien pants tailored to fit, but they don't seem like they will be too hot in the summer.
I also wear coolmax/under armour type clothing under my riding gear in the summer as well.

Thanks for your input. I have just ordered a pair of the motoport - Air Mesh Kevlar pants. Now I just need to wait for up to 12 weeks to get them.

The Darien's are cooler than most cordura pants because they do not have a taffeta liner. The taffeta is nice against bare skin but it does warm things up and it can stick to you skin if you sweat and then things really warm up.

To those of you who are wearing the HT Air Overpants, how is the fit?
I currently have the regular HT Overpant with the thinsulate liner, very warm in the winter, but the fit is terrible. I wear a 33" waist jeans, so I got the 34" HT's. They won't adjust small enough around the waist and come up nearly to my armpits!! The inseam is fine, it's from the crotch to the waist is out of proportion. Anyhow, I'm in need of some comfortable cool pants for a summer trip out west.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
They are designed to be overpants, so get the correct size.
I wear 44's, bought 44's and they fit over my jeans. The adjustment on the HT Air 2.0 overpants is better than the first version of the regular HT overpant (more adjustment). I have those too.
Had I gone up a size, they would be too big.
