View Full Version : Mirror LED Turn Signals

Again, while browsing for Wing stuff.... I went to a site I haven't been in a while to get some LED turn signals that I had on my previous Wing.
These are basically, LEDs in an epoxy-type resin and have a little curve in them to match the inner curve of the GL1800 mirror housing... well, guess what, that curve isn't radical and will adapt to the inner ST1300 mirror housing.
There are two wires to connect to the existing sig light in the mirror housing but once you do that and use the double stick tape to place these suckers on the inner mirror, they should work great.
Here is a pic from the V and P Accessories (http://www.vpaccessories.com/1800.htm) website, now, you can get them in red or amber and the pic is decieving as it makes it look like one is lower intensity. When I get home tonight I'll pull off the mirror and half install these to show the effect as well as get daytime pics of the compoment but, I loved them when they were on my other wing as they did two things 1) show people in my blind spots as well as behind me another signal light and, 2) reminded me my sig light was on. I know the shape will work with the ST1300 and I feel it might even work with an ST1100 but I don't have one I can check.

Thanks Joe. These look good.
Do you think they'd fit through the mirror trim holes, with a little Dremeling, rather than stick on the mirror surface? Like this idea, http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Lights.html#TurnSignals, which can look factory if done carefully, but these would be better because they're brighter than standard LEDs, and there's lots of `em.

Jeff,
My mirrors have the multi-vex mirrors stuck on them and these LEDs easily slide between the edge of both mirrors and the mirror housing. They are just thin enough.
I'll post more pics tonight of the individual part with a dime or pencil next to it and then show it installed, but not stuck on since these are for the Wing. But, you should get the idea, if I was keeping the ST I'd get these for it.
In the attached pic, I'm guestimating where they will fit...
More later....

Pic #1 - Shows LED cluster next to pen, to show how deep
Pic #2 - Shows LED cluster next to pen, to show how thin
Pic #3 - Shows LED on in daylight, pic taken with flash
Pic #4 - Close up of LED cluster between mirror and mirror housing, as you can see, you can move it in and out or position it almost anywhere on the housing and it doesn't interfere with the movement of the mirror
Pic #5 - non-flash pic of LED on, these are very bright and look great.
Note: I didn't actually install these on the bike, I just slid/jammed them in between the mirror/housing to show that it would fit and would work.

A question for anyone who's mounted these: How bright are they from the rider's point of view, at night? If you look at the mirrors (after dark) while they are flashing, does it make it hard to see what's in the mirror?
Thanks!

I ended up using theses LED mirror lights (http://www.hondadirectlineusa.com/stores/product.asp?pid=1239&str=4&ID=999617549) due to the lack of glare in the mirror even at night. The LED's are positioned on the outside face and angled so that they are not a distraction for the rider but provide excellent side visibility of the rider's turning intensions.

I assume that these come as a set, 1 for each mirror. Can any of you confirm this before I order? Or when I place my order do I need to change the quantity to 2?

As Mellow witnessed, they do come "TWO" to a package.
I installed them on my 05 and really like how they add to the bike. Helps with recognizing the fact that you did not turn off your signal.

When I ordered my replacement set (see previous bike narrowed last summer) the flat black paint wasn't thick enough to blank the signal on the inside toward the rider so I very carefully (read 0000 steel wool) removed the paint until the leds were more visible to me in daylight. At night they were fine stock, but I seldom ride at night and wanted more daytime visibility. This is the second best idea Joe told me about........the barbecued chicken was great.

Those LED's work real well and are a simple install. I got mine from http://www.californiasportturing.com They ship a set for 53 bucks. Look under lighting. It calls to be installed on the GL 1800, but they also install on the ST 1300 just as well.

Where can I find a quick connector to use when installing these? I stopped by my local automotive store and they did not have anything. I want to use a connector so if I need to remove the mirror I can disconnect the wire and connect it back easily.

Depending on what you are looking to do, those strip lights are very good. If you just want a reminder to shake you up and say "Hey Dummy turn off your signal!" I got 3 very bright LEDs at Autozone for under $10. Many colors offered (I went with blue (go figure)). Even with the single blue LED I have had Cages comment on my blue turn signal mirrors. Apparently, from the rear, the cagers can also see my blue LEDs in the mirrors.
If you want to go a step further, Kisan offers these: http://www.kisantech.com/index.php?cat_id=1 sequential flash LEDs and brake lights.

You can get both the hitachi connectors and the led from www.casporttouring.com which I think was just typoed incorrrectly in a previous message. One shipping cost to cover it all.

Thats better, but I still think I am just going to us some wire ends that slide together and then just use heat shrink tubing on them. Then all I will have to do is cut away the tubing and slide the ends apart. Thanks for all your help though.

Sorry, my mistake on the link. I cut the signal wire after the stock signal connector. I soldered & heat shrinked the wires on the signal wire, not the running light wire. It worked out just fine, and I am able to take off the mirror from the bike.

I got to thinking about it and thought that I really don't remove the mirror for anything. I had to when I did the Stebel, but even if you had to cut the wires it would not me that big of deal.
I ordered the ones that are for the Goldwing. They look like an easier install than the ones where you have to drill holes.

I have ordered these, Need a bit of help before I recieve them. Can any of you tell me what wire gauge these use? Just went to carquest and the guy showed me some options on connecting them. I was going to us a posi tap but you have to order 50 of them and I dont need that many. Is the wire gauge on the leds the same as I tap into on the turn signal?
Thanks

Typically LEDs have 22-24 AWG wire. It is smaller gage than the stock wire.

I ordered these and got them in the mail today. I went to install them and ran into one little problem. I got all the wires hooked up and the LED works, I went to mount it on the mirror with the sticky tabs that came on them and they would not stick to the mirror. What is my next option? Remove their tabs and put some 3M foam tape on it? Where is the best place to get that stuff? I have looked before and don't really remember seeing it in any stores. Thanks!
Landon
I used my dremel tool to trim off the lower part so it will fit flat against the back of the mirror.

I have used heavy duty velcro. Trim them down to an appropriate size so that the LED's tuck in nicely against the mirrior. The LED / Mirrior set up is already a tight fit. Once you get them placed you should be fine.
Velcro can be purchased at auto parts stores or a craft store. That is where I purchased mine while running around with my SO.
Another idea is to slightly trim the outer edge so that more of the amber light is visible. Use a small dremel set up and just trim the edge off. Be careful. This project cost me an extra set due to an error in my cutting.
Finished results look nice, and vehicles to the side and slightly to the rear can see the lights also.
Good luck with your installation,
Regards,
christo

I kind of like this idea. I think I even hav some Velcro left over from another project. Also using velcro I could remove the LEDS if I need to work on something behing the mirror. Thanks for the idea.

Ok...so I got the Velcro and tried to use it. It would not stick either. On the back side of the mirror is where it does not seem to want to stick. Its not a flat area. I guess I will get some 3M tape and see if it will work.
Glue?
Drill hole in LED bracket and use a small nut and bolt on the edge of the mirror where the OEM holes are?

When you guys refer to 3M Foam tape, are you talking about like what is on the knee pads or tank pad? Or are they two different products? Just want to make sure before I go get some because I hear the stuff in kind of expensive.

Something I noticed following Joe last year was that I saw them blink before I saw his tail lights.
I haven't installed LEDs on my ST yet (I'm seriously considering it), but installed a LED light bar under the lift gate on my Expedition last year that supplement the tail lights, as well as functioning as stop lights/turn signals. I also noticed the phenomenon that you're referring to. The reason is that the LEDs light up instantaneously when voltage is applied, but it takes a few milliseconds for the filaments to glow after applying voltage to an incandescent bulb  .

I just install the LED lights in the turn signal housings. I used a 3/16 drill to drill thru the holes outside of the mirrors, trimmed the back of the soft plastic with a knife to adust for equal exposure of the lights on the outside, then glue them in from the back. I believe the LED lights are 5mm. I purchased my lights at the Cleveland Cycle Show (4 lights $10). I found a better source on EBAY. The link is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/10-LED-5mm-Bulb-Wired-Resistor-Attached-FREE-SHIP-6_W0QQitemZ350023609785QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item350 023609785
The price is 10 lights any color for $12.50 with free shipping. I might have installed 3 or four per side but my package had 4 lights and at the time seemed ok. I stripped and sodered a tap wire on bike side of the wire connector then attached crimp-on plastic covered spade connectors from Ace Hardware. The picture attached is two lights reflecting off the mirror housing. Of all the farkles that I put on my bike this winter (AP-2, Powerlet Outlets, connected Chatterbox and Zumo 550 to AP-2 and Audiovox Cruise Control) the LED lights were the easiest and gave me instant satifaction. I'm thinking about doing this, but am wondering about the long-term reliability. Do the LEDs obtained from Radio Shack (ref part number 276-011) hold up well to the elements, especially H2O?

I rigged up some leds in the little holes on the side of the mirror. I put 2 on each side. It cost $0.53 each for leds, and $0.19 each for a couple of resisters and I had wire already. I wired them to the 9 pin connector in the quartet harness. It has pins for both signals.
