So here's some of the photos so far. Dana and Vicki have quite a few more but at least this is a start.
So, here's the gang at Denny's this morning.
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/01breakfast.jpg
That's Dana, Vicki, Nick (NoBull) and John Gardner.
Welcome to DesertSTOC and check out the snazzy new West Coast banner. Sure looks sharp!
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/02banner.jpg
Check out John Gardner's Corbin Smuggler. You should hear his bike! He has a radio built in so when he starts up it sounds like a wing! :D Got his tunes going and he's ready to roll.
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/03john.jpg
Here's a funky ocotillo sculpture at the hotel made with old insulators and copper pipe. It's kind of neat.
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/04sculpt.jpg
Ron's a new guy who cruised over for the day from Las Cruces. He's only had his STeed since December - Big Welcome to Ron!
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/05ron.jpg
So, check out the clouds. Can you say snow????? If we're gonna get any riding done we'd better get going!
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/06clouds.jpg
But we do get going and make up some nice road to Hillsboro and then we'll make a plan to head west towards Silver City on Hwy 152.
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/07hillsboro.jpg
Here comes Ron through a nice set of twisties.
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/08ron.jpg
And here's Dana and Vicki as well!

http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/10dv.jpg
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/11dv.jpg
We make it back to the Motel and welcome Shuey in.
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/12shuey.jpg
He reports snow just East of Tucson and we're all worried about George since we know he'd left Kingman around 9-ish and is headed for what looked like a line of snow on the radar.
Of course, we're not so worried that we can't eat!
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/13dinner.jpg
Some of the folks that did some exploring around Silver City report that they ran into snow and sleet but that the road was gorgeous. A heavy haze has settled in and it's pouring rain.
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/14rain.jpg
The clouds are so heavy and low that the mountains are hidden.
Forecast for tonight is heavy snow. We've called the track and they're planning a later start for the day so we'll see what happens.
BTW, got news that George got snowed out in Tucson and headed back to Kingman. Just as well as you'd have been soaked to the bone coming in around supper time.
On another note, John Gardner gets the super camper award. He stayed at the motel last night b/c he didn't make it in 'til close to midnight but he's moved over to the campground for tonight and this is the current weather radar picture!

Yeah, thanks for the fotos. That's as close as I'll get to Deming this weekend. I made it about 30 miles east of Tucson and ran into a blizzard. Rain off and on from Phoenix to Tucson, hit a clear spot just east of Tucson and had my fingers crossed. Rain started again about 20 miles east and snow soon after that. Road was covered with slush and shoulders were accumulating. Just a little altitude made the difference. With 200 miles and more altitude to go, discretion took over and I made the U-turn.
695 miles of mostly 4-lane to miss a good ride. Still, I'll be surprised if the track day happens. The weather I rode thru today is headed east. This is the same storm that closed (http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/weather/02/15/socal.storm.ap/index.html) I-8 in San Diego County Thursday night.
Raven has already called for DesertSTOC 3 to be in March. Good idea. :D
<edit> BTW, I'm dumb a$$ for not taking any phone numbers with. Gotta print off a fresh RAN list! Gunnar's phone was the only one I had with me. Don't know when I lost Mac, Big Tom, and Mark.(?)

George, I'm glad you are OK. i knew when I woke up Tuesday morning and saw all that white stuff in the streets that I wouldn't make it out of Canton and when I checked the cities south and west that I had to go through, it was a ditto everywhere. I didn't even fire up the snow blower or get the shovel out until I had 6" of the stuff on the ground. You folks that made it to Silver City know to be careful, hope you all make it home safe. I know ya'll will have a good time together.
John good on ya for hanging in there and camping!!! If I was there I would have been with you and so would have George. Hopefully you were able to have a campfire!!! If so post some pictures when you can.
Raven thanks for the pictures and I know after the success you had last year this is a bit of a let down, but with the weather, you takes your chances. Just so you know, the corner I live on is still a sheet of ice!!!

Man, do I miss New Mexico! I was stationed at White Sands back in the Eighties, and still ache for the desert, especially in August, when the temperature and humidity here in Kentucky are both about ninety!

So here's the first pictures of the morning.
Here's my stunning new seat cover. Fortunately it's only temporary.

Looks like the track day will be great - too bad y'all didn't make it. They normally start at 8 but we called yesterday and they said they were delaying the start 'til 10 to allow for it to warm up just a little. The temp said 29° F. A little chilly for me but it looks like a warming trend in Mac's neck of the woods. Come on out, the weather is fine!

Glad the weather turned good for y'all. We wish we could have joined you again this year but we are in the same boat as Mac with about two feet of snow on the ground and a winter storm watch again for tonight and tomorrow.
Have fun and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Beautiful weather today. Clear skies with puffy clouds and a slight breeze.
So, here's a picture of the mountains that we rode through yesterday, when it looked really bad but wasn't snowing yet, after last night's weather.
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/snow.jpg
That put a damper on a few folks who wanted to go up to Silver City and the Gila Cliff Dwellings today since the road was closed. Of course, once the day got warmed up, a lot of the snow disappeared by around 2-ish.
Meanwhile, here's some preliminary track pictures. There will definitely be more of these but, since I was on the track, these were all the ones that made it on my camera. I know Shuey and Dana's cameras also got some photos plus there was a track photographer as well.
Here's Shuey!

http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/tdraven1.jpg
These were fairly early on so we hadn't really loosened up yet. Once we got going, we got into a pretty good groove (not to mention making a few grooves as well!).
Here's Shuey again!
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/tdshuey2.jpg
Here's Dana (he definitely gave some of the "sporty" guys a run for their money). The local track guru, who showed us around the first session, was ready to get Dana on a busa or a CBR!
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/tddana2.jpg
And now finally the question of which color is fastest has been proved once and for all! In this case, the black one is sooooooo faST, you can't even see it! :D
http://homepage.mac.com/dacevirago/desertstoc08/tdraven2.jpg
Most folks were worried about doing the track day b/c they were worried about messing up their bikes but, as the folks who went out discovered, track days are more about focussing on technique without having to worry about traffic, road conditions, animals etc. and not so much about racing. I think we may have a couple of new track day addicts (Dana was grinning so big, his helmet cracked - okay not really, but he was certainly glowing!).
Too bad the pre- weather kept folks away as today was pretty darn near perfect. High today ended up being right around 50° but the folks on the track were plenty warm!

Vicki and I rolled into our driveway here in El Cajon at around 1600. I have to admit to being a bit saddle sore. We had a really good time! Raven, again you sure know how to throw a great STOC event!
We left El Cajon at about 0815 Thursday morning, it was cold (44) and raining. As it turns out that was as good as it was going to get for the first 1 1/2 hours, as we reached 4000ft. the temps were 37 and still raining. Needless to say, Vicki and I were miserable. The day did improve with the rain stopping before we reached El Centro and the temps actually hit 60 near Yuma, AZ. The next hurtle was getting through Tucson. Seems there was an accident and with the event in town, the construction and everything else getting through town was a nightmare! We were so glad to see open road in front of us, Vicki and I decided to press on and just finish the ride to Deming that day. We checked in, met some of the early arrivals, ate supper across the street at Subway and hung the ST-Owners banner.
http://www.dmulk.com/bikes/dteel/2008_02_16/IMG_4543s.JPG
The next morning we took a ride with no particular destination in mind other than to find some twisties and have some fun. The route we took according to memory was 180, 26, 27, 152, 35, 15N to the Gila Cliff Dwellings.
These next two pictures were taken at an pullout on 152 somewhere.

The weather was deteriorating, so we decided to boogie back vice taking the walking tour of the cliff dwellings. A wise move as it turned out. We headed south on 15 back toward Silver City, it wasn't long before it started spitting and sputtering snow on us. Just as we were entering the outer edge of Silver City it was snowing so hard and sticking to the wind screen and I was having a really hard time seeing. We got back to 180 and boogied back to Deming. All in all only about a 200 mile ride but it was chuck full of adventure.
The next morning we awoke to frost and ice all over our bikes. As Raven already mentioned, it rained pretty hard the night before, but we woke to a clear but very chilly morning as these next pictures can attest!

And this is were I was riding the day before.
http://www.dmulk.com/bikes/dteel/2008_02_16/IMG_4536s.JPG
So the track day went well. There was one point near the end where the powers that be allowed some sport bike guys on the track at the same time Raven and I were putting in some laps. We both promptly caught up to our respective groups and believe me when I say they were not able to shake us! The track guru asked me why I didn't pass that guy.... I had to laugh and admit that it was my first time on a track and I didn't know how to do so safely. I asked if it was permissible to flash my high beams at him and turn on my turn signals...hehe
Here's a shot of some of the bikes gathered at the hotel.

And last but not least, the gang gathered for supper our last night there.

I had a really excellent time. Again I have to thank Raven for doing all the work to make this event such a success. I enjoyed myself throughly and so did Vicki.
I was so good seeing everyone. Sure wish Mac and George would have made it, would have been nice to put on some laps at the track with you guys there. Oh well, maybe next time!

I had a good time meeting new folks at our meet. Thank you Raven.....you did very well putting together the event. Albeit we were missing some that wanted to come but could not get there. I enjoyed watching some of the younger folk run around the track, it looked like a blast. I did get in some mountain riding both ways which was nice considering some of where the weather had hit on the western side of NM, I was not going to try. I was in my driveway by 1:30 yesterday and the westerly's(winds) were just starting to pick up pretty strong. Glad I did, we had 45mph winds come through here shortly afterwords.
Thanks guys and glad to see the great pic's from Dana and Raven, a good time was had by us all. ;)

Here's my thoughts on DesertSTOC... Great idea! I love the desert! Some of my best riding has been in the desert (during the cool season of course). This year's DesertSTOC was in New Mexico. Pretty far away for a weekend for us Left Coasters. And as shown during this year's event weather was a factor. It snows, it ices, it rains in New Mexico during that time of year. How about picking a place and date where the weather and location would be more optimum for the rest of us; since most desert areas are primed around the western states. I suggest next year either in Nevada, Arizona, or even California and either in late fall, or early spring. Just my 2 cents... :)
But then again there is SeaSTOC II coming up in late fall in the California Sonora Desert, but that's a bike camping event.

Well....I agree to a point Fred, February might be a tad early but then regular forcast over the last few years in that particular area has been very mild too! Mid 60's to 70, but with that being written March would prolly be better in any of the aforemention states....and it's prolly windy for most of them as well during that time of year....but ya know this global warming thing ya jus' can't tell whats gonna happen:rolleyes:
Ride safe out there.....;)

Dana,Vicki Im glad to see the mudslides I saw on the news didnt effect your trip home. I really enjoyed meeting all of you. Apparently it does that in California, too! :D
+1 with Ed, the weather is often quite mild in AZ and NM in February. Heck, weekend before last it was in the 70's and will likely be in the 70's this weekend. Sometimes weather is just weird.
As far as the date goes, February was originally suggested by Mellow, last year, and Desert as a choice for "warmer than most places" for a mid-winter gathering.
I suppose though, in truth, it really doesn't matter when or where something is, folks make it or they don't and there are always reasons as to why or why not (whether it be work, timing, weather, family, or whatever).

Today is a holiday!? President's Day!? Woo hoo! What!? I don't get it off!? I'm stuck at work today!? That suxs! Oh, most of you don't get it off either! Well that doubly suxs! Oh! Goverment workers and contractors get it off!? All two of you!? Cool! And people who don't have to work for a living have it off by default!? Lucky you! ;)
I can't remember the last time it snowed in a California desert... but it is a big place after all...
How about Joshua Tree National Park next year... wait a minute! Oh right! It does snow in the high desert there sometimes in Feb. OK, that's out... How about Death Valley then? It don't snow there in Feb... what? Oh! All the mountains surrounding it does... OK OK... that does it! I got a idea for next year's DesertSTOC!

Really the best part of this is to get some ideas flowing; what was done in the past doesn't matter. I think if you had to put a percentage on the likelihood that the bad weather would hit exactly on the dates for DesertSTOC it would be very low. I know the weather the weekend before was perfect and I'll bet next weekend is great too. It was just plain bad luck that the storm swept through on exactly the starting date for DesertSTOC this year.
I left El Cajon on Thursday and the weather was horrible for the first 1 1/2 hours. After that it was bright and sunny. The temps were cool but reasonable. The wind was blowing but not so much to make the trip dangerous. If I had heeded the weather forecast I would not have made the additional trip to the Cliff Dwellings on Friday and I would not have been rained (snowed) on at all.
When you set an event 1/2 year in advance you take your chances with mother nature and she is after all a bit@H. I think Murphy played his hand as well. Regardless, the weather, those that made it had a good time. Those that tried to make it had a good time. And we're having an even better time trying to second guess how it could have been better.
I challenge anyone to do a better job than Raven at putting together a DesertSTOC event in February. I'll bet the location doesn't really matter since what the weather is like where everyone is coming from matters more than what the weather is like where the event takes place. As George and Mac can attest, if you can't get there it doesn't matter like what the weather is like at the event.

I was answering her question ("BTW, where were you??????") Dana on why I didn't show up... I had to work. No holiday for me. It was too far away for a short weekend trip. It was too cold, snowy and wet, in that time of year in that place. I choose comfort and safety first. That's it! My opinion, right or wrong. I am always sorry to miss a "local" (well almost local) STOC event. And I can plainly see that everyone who showed up had a grand time. They overcame challenges that would of layed me low. That, as Raven correctly pointed out, is the bottom line. So there is no complaint on my side. Raven is obviously a great dis-organizer and I watch and learn from the masters! It is after all my, our, decision to go or not.
I suggest, as a member of this forum and true lover of fellow ST'ers that next year maybe Vegas would be a great place to host DesertSTOC. I'd mark my calendar for that one! Woooooo Weeee... Yes-sir-eee! :hotpepper

Sorry Fred, looks like I misinterpreted your response as criticism, my bust.
Now back to the topic of this thread. I wrote an email to Michelle at the Arroyo Seco Track to find the website of the photographer that was taking pictures the day the ST-Owners were there and here (http://www.highdesertracing.com/gallery/4349305_2a2TR#P-1-15) it is. I think he captured some really nice shots and is well worth looking at. The prices are pretty steep, so I'm not sure how many I will get, but I know I'll get at least a couple. The name of the studio is High Desert Video Productions and their home page can be found here (http://www.highdesertracing.com/).

Looks to me like the track day was a lot of fun for those of you who participated. I would have expected to see more hanging off with the sport bikers than was caprtured in the pictures. Since I took that Total Control Class last year, I find hanging off a Wing really gets a lot more speed carried through turns than prior to the class. That said, when I brought the latest '02 home, I turned on my street and dragged the heck out of my highway peg mounts!!! I haven't had highway pegs on a Wing since I got rid of my '84 back in '88 for that reason. They really cut down the lean angle of the bike. If I keep them on, I'll have to see if I can relocate them.

I contacted the track photographer regarding a photo CD that includes all photos of an individual rider and here's his reply:
It looked like you guys were having a blast out there. I hope you enjoyed your day at ASR.
I will put ALL photos of an individual rider on a CD for $25.00 + $1.50 shipping. The difference between the images on CD and the digital downloads available on my website is that the CD images are resized to 876px X 570px from the original size of 8+Mpx. While that may seem like a large reduction, I have found that very good prints, as large as 8X10, can be made from most of them and they are certainly more than adequate for smaller prints, email or for posting on a website. If you need higher resolution images, then the digital download option from the website would be a better choice. I have actually shown people two identical 8X10 prints, one form the CD size and one from the original out of the camera and in cases where the original photo is nice and sharp, they can’t tell the difference.
The CDs are not available through the website. To order one, simply send your name, mailing address and description of the bike along with a check for $26.50 to:
Ed Frazier
High Desert Racing
PO Box 272
Dona Ana, NM 88032
I generally have CDs ready and in the mail within a day of receiving your check. If you could forward this to the other ST riders that may be interested I would certainly appreciate it.
Thanks for writing,
Ed Frazier

So, if you want a wall-sized poster, download the mega digital from smugmug but if you want some 8x10's to hang at your office, buy the CD!

The pics just point out what a dweeb I am for not pushing thru. An earlier start on Friday would'a got me there before the snow. Ah, well, such is life.

Yeah and if I had left Monday instead of planning to leave Tuesday, I could have been there Wednesday and waited for everyone else to show!!!!

Hmmmm, red x's?
Can't figure why unless you have some type of firewall that keeps them from being loaded in from my hosting site.

Looked like you all had a great time,
I'm pleased for you.
The trackday looked like a blast, but I just couldn't belive you all left your side bags on, them things are expensive bits of kit.
Cheers

Well, it's not like we're RACING or anything. Just out riding around in circles a bit.
Besides, don't the side bags make the ST more aerodynamic and, thus, faSTer? Some of the sport bikes discovered that to be the case!

Excellent Raven, thanks for taking the time. I've decided to purchase the full download of IMG-7723 and IMG-7526, but I'll get the CD as well. The IMG-7723 is the one of you and I so don't get it, I'll send it to you.

I think 7470 and/or 7483 should make the calendar for February!
7723 would also be good for the calendar.
It looks like I just cut and pasted my avatar into the 7723 picture, doesn't it? If nothing else, I'm consistent!:D

The only difference is that fast red bike hot on your heels! I'll be ordering that CD as soon as I get home to my check book.
