I just finished changing my oil and found a way to remove the filter w/o having it dump all over the center stand. Rather simple actually after looking at it.

You will need a socket wrench oil filter remover. i.e. the one that fits over the end of the filter, not the wrench type.

I used a 7' funnel and once the oil plug was back in just slid the oil pan back up against the front of the center stand. Then I squeezed the funnel at the top until it was maybe 3" wide and shoved it up between the tupperware and the oilcase with the spout now down into the oil pan. I loosened the filter with the socket wrench and pulled it off by hand.

Most of the oil went down the funnel spout but some followed the outside of the funnel but still went into the oil pan. Not one drop of oil on the floor.

I have too. Drain the oil using the center stand and the side stand changing the filter.

I have a motorcycle lift, a handy model, I used to put the bike on the center stand, until yesterday. I now put the front tire in the vise and raise the lift and drain the oil and change the filter with virtually no mess. To remove the filter i just do as :bow1: mellow says and push the center stand down just enough to clear the filter wrench on the end of an 3/8 extension and ratchet. :)

Some good ideas in that article. Although I'd never start the motor with the oil plug out. The oil pump could cavitate and take longer to prime upon final statup.

Get a big, one gallon zip-lock freezer style bag. unscrew the filter until you can start to see a trickle of oil, take the zip-lock bag place the entire bag around the filter as high as you can get it, close as much of the "zipper" part of the bag as possible, then unscrew the filter the rest of the way of by hand by gripping it around the whole bag. Viola! the filter falls into the bag and the remaining oil will take a few minutes to drain, not a drop on the ground. Again, never tried it on the ST, but it works great on airplanes, and beleive me there's not always alot of room to work under the cowling of an airplane. :D
