View Full Version : Bottom line on Corbin seat...

I had a 1500 Wing a few years back and I put a Corbin seat on it. It was easily the best seat I've ever had on a bike untill I met up with the stock seat on my 1800 Wing. I loved the firmness, and it looked great.

Does anyone have any experience with the Dual Canyon seat from Corbin on their ST? I am curious as to whether it reduces the "lean forward" seat effect that the stock seat has. Not that it makes you lean forward, but it feels to me that the stocker is angled downward and its causing me some discomfort. Its top looks level to me. Any comments?

All input is welcomed, as are links to anyone's bike with pics of the seat. Thanks and ride safe.

I've no experience with Corbin, however the angle down of the stocker is one of the problems for both rider and passenger on the ST. The other I think is the squishy foam throughout.

Between now and when I take delivery on the Sargent seat, I've made my stocker more flat and it is a definite and immediate improvement.

I got the dual canyon 'close' version prior to getting the Sargent..

It was way too hard... after about 3k it still felt just too hard. If you like a very firm seat then it's the one for you but I was looking for something between butter soft (stocker) and rock hard (corbin), the Sargent was firm yet not soft yet with enough 'give' to provide a very quick 'break in'... In fact, I don't remember breaking in the Sargent, just got on it and rode.

Angle: The Corbin, as I remember it, was just a little higher in the front and the Sargent about the same, just a little higher.

During hard braking... I still slid forward on all the seats, but just a little less on the Corbin and Sargent than the stock.

I didn't like that I lost all my height adjustment on the corbin and it was also very heavy and you really had to push down hard on the passenger seat to get it to lock into place.

Hope that helps..

I think the Corbin is the only way to go. I bought the Dual Canyon seat for my 13 because I wanted the look of a full seat not one in halves. As for the seating you do not get that lean foward angle like the "stocker". I HATE that stock seat. I have only put a few miles on this seat and plan on increasing that mileage today, but if it is anything like the Corbin seats on my previous 2 ST1100s you will love the firm seating. Make sure when you order to get the "DT Stitching" option (like on the 1100 seats) it dresses it up real nice. As for pictures, I'll try to post some after my ride today.

Received my dual canyon last Thursday, and love it. Yeah its hard, but that's what I like about it. Rode for about 2 hours yesterday, and didn't have any of the usual problems found with the stock seat.

It wonderful not to be sliding forward when coming to a stop, this new seat feels more like what I was used on my 98 Wing.

The one thing I have to get use to is that I no longer can put both feet flat on the ground when stopped, since this seat is wider than the stock seat was. A few more miles and I'm sure I won't give a thought.

Best thing I've added to the ST to date.

To answer your original question, I found the Corbin Dual Canyon (regular version, not close) to be as bad or worse in the nut-crunching slide forward department. But there is a fix. You can place the forward seat tab, which is designed to go under the height adjuster, ON TOP of the height adjuster. This helps a little. I found that you can also move the height adjuster to the middle position and make it work. You might have to readjust the rear lock bracket on the Corbin - very easy to do.

Word of caution, you need to zip-tie or otherwise secure the height adjuster to the middle position. Otherwise it will pop into the lower position when you hit a bump - resulting in a loud noise and a very uncomforatble feeling!

To answer your original question,

Thanks for the tip Steve. I appreciate it a lot.

For eveyone...I ordered my Corbin yesterday. I hope it will be here by Friday or Monday at the latest. I loved my Corbin on my 1500 Wing and hope I will have a similar experience. If not, here I come Classifieds. LOL

"DT Stitching" option

I couldn't wait for the stitching. It looks great. I had the same style on my Wing saddle so I went for something different. The pics on the website I thought would look cool in all black so I went with that...plus they were in stock and I wouldn't have to wait for it to be made. C'mon Corbin, hurry!

I ordered a Corbin last week. Came today. Thought I ordered a leather seat and it showed up carbon fiber leather. Called Ride Gear (where I bought it) and they said that was all they offered. Asked me to try it out and see if I didn't like it. I said OK, even though I like the look of Royce's seat better.

I found out that the seat would not clasp if the front pin was set. They told me to sit on it, which lead to me to getting it on, but then I couldn't turn the key to remove it. Once I got it removed, I noticed that both helmet hooks wedged between the frame and the seat pan tearing the leather on the seat.

Something must be wrong, so I called direct to Corbin and they suggested I return it to Ride Gear. I called Ride Gear and now they may not accept it, even though it was them that told me to try it, and to sit on it to get it to clasp, because the leather is ripped. I'm talking to the salesperson tomorrow since he left before he found out the end result, but I'm wondering if this is a "one time" problem - or, if others have the same issue?

Looks like I should have ordered right from Corbin, got the material I wanted, and maybe a bit better customer support? If nothing else, I would have at least liked the seat I ripped...

We'll be hopefull the situation is resolved tomorrow. Either way, I'll report back.

... mine also would not lock after matching the front pin. Here's what you do - look at the little U clamp that goes into the seat lock - I 'lowered' it by using 3 small washers on each side, then re-attaching it. Presto! ... perfect fit.

Hopefully this works for you, solved my problem. Try 2, 3 then 4, one combo will do it. Good luck ... then enjoy the seat, and start riding. Horst. ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm thinking something is just wrong with the pan. Once on, the upper lip that fits under the fake tank plastic is higher on one side than it is on the other. I will wait for morning and see what happens between Corbin and Ride Gear.

I probably got the one that wasn't made correctly. It has just been one of "those days". Nice thing about it, there is always tomorrow.

Sounds like something is wrong with the seat pan. Mine installed quickly with no problem at all. Good luck with everything.

I've owned 2 Corbins (one BMW and one Honda) and neither one was a perfect fit ... it does seem like quality control at Corbin is slipping. The seats themselves are OK, but fit-to-the-bike is not. Too bad ....

I have to agree with stg1, had no problems with mine, put it in place pushed down on rear and that was it.

Good report of customer service from Ride Gear!!!

Got a call back and the salesman (Jeromy) is taking the seat back and refunding money. It took a bit of calling, but wanted to give a two thumbs up for them taking care of me. Although I will probably order the seat direct to get the leather I want, I will be purchasing from Ride Gear in the future to support a company that will take care of its customers.

Turns out they think the pan of the seat is not properly formed since it was "twisted" once the seat caught the rear clasp.

Was there a big price difference between them and ordering directly from Corbin... I will be ordering one soon :D and I am just curious about that. I don't mind spending the extra $ to get it right the first time and get exactly what I want.

Thanks,
Robert

I ordered my dual canyon direct from Corbin, paid $379.00 plus shipping. Same as cost shown on their web site.

Have been taking the long way home the past couple of evenings and really enjoy the new seat over the stock one. Yeah, its hard, but still way better than what comes with the bike. I hope to take a 2-3 hour ride tomorrow which will give me a better idea of what it going to feel like when on it for a longer time span.

Can't think of enough words to express the joy of having a ST! One awesome machine. Seems like everytime I ride it only gets better.:bow1: :biker:

Royce,

You posted a picture of the Corbin seat on your red ST with the DT style stitching. This is exactly the seat I am looking for on my 2005 ST1300. I was wondering if this is the regular black leather or the chocolate color (etc). Do you recall what specifics you provided to Corbin to have this seat created? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Kurt

PS: Also sent you a PM with this same message, but wasn't sure if it went through.

The Corbin dual sport I have fit fine, and I love the seat...sadly because of my large (okay very large) frame I need the seat on my ST all the way up and back to be comfortable. Hence the reason my Corbin is listed for sale in the classifieds...anyone looking for a heated dual sport?

Kurt,
I just ordered a black seat with the DT stitching (at no extra charge). $379.00 plus shipping ended up being $404.00 total. My 02 ST had a corbin with the same stitching and it really looked good. The only thing is the 02 seat was a smooth leather and the 05 has a textured leather so you might want to check into that. I really like the look of the textured leather. You can go on Corbin.com and look at the different styles of leather they have to offer. I got out last Sunday and rode about 300 miles and could tell the difference right away. Sitting on a couple of 2X4s would be better than that stock seat. Good luck.

Just a follow up on the new single Corbin seat . At first it feels a lot firmer than stock but you soon find out that is a good thing :D The sore spot I had with the stocker is gone . As I have said before this thing looks great ! The stiching is first class . Way to go Corbin :bow1: !!
Really ENJOYING the ride

Royce,

Thank you for your prompt assistance and clarification! I will order the seat ASAP and probably go with the textured black leather. I'm already having delusions of grandeur awaiting the new seat. I'll post a couple of pictures when UPS delivers it in the (hopefully near) future.

Robert - The seat from Ride Gear was $299, free shipping, but did have to pay $15 in an oversize fee. Decent savings from the Corbin site, but they only have the carbon fiber embossed leather with black piping. Any other combination and you get to order from Corbin direct. However, I found this true with all web site Corbin sales so far.

I spoke to salesman Mike Davis at Corbin today and ordered the Dual Canyon "Close" model for my 2005 ST1300. I elected to go with an entirely black seat with the "DT" style stitching.

Many thanks to Royce (Stg1) for posting the pictures of his saddle on this thread as it assisted greatly with my decision.

Mike stated that it would be about three weeks until the delivery of my saddle. I'm just too excited! I hope that I don't think that the seat is too hard, but after reading the statements of the owners, I guess it is strictly a personal preference.

Had a Corbin DC on my 91 ST11... better than the STocker for sure, but still left a lot to be desired 3-4 hours later IMHO. Borrowed a frieds Concourse during my 4 bikeless years between ST's, had one of Rick Mayers saddles... HELLO happy butt... and it wasn't even made for me. My order is in for the ST13 as of last weekend, won't have it 'till beginning of July :( will have to suffer through the half dozen long days planned 'till then... will let y'all know how it works out.

Kurt,

I also ordered my Corbin from Mike Davis and he told me it would be 3 or 4 weeks. Mine was delivered in 8 days. Hope yours come in that quickly. They say that it takes 2000 miles for break-in, but the 2 previous Corbins I've had took about 1 long ride each.

Well I've got less than 40 miles on my Corbin. No doubt it will take a little getting used to, but I can tell it will be a big improvement over the stocker. Much, much firmer. Did I mention the firmness? LOL

I find that it sits me higher, maybe due to the lack of the foam compressing over the stocker. I was concerned about putting it on the lowest setting, but because it sits me so much higher, I actually like the new seating position. Little or no impact (for me) on the knees in relationship to the footpegs. If the weather holds out here, I plan to throw some major miles on the bike on Saturday or Sunday. Probably won't hit the 1000 mile breakin standard, but I'll do my best.:biker:

Ride safe.

Thought I would throw my 2 cents worth in about my Corbin. Rode about 250 miles Sunday, and was beginning to feel it. I wasn't hurting like I had on the stock seat, and after moving around a bit, everything was feeling fine again.

I talked to a guy Sat who said he has had Corbin seats on three different bikes and found it usually takes about 1000 miles before you start feeling really comfortable on them.

One of the biggest differences is that it is wider, and my feet no long are flat on the ground when stopped, but used to that from the wing I had, so its not a problem.

My real test will come June 18th as I head out for a two week trip to the western part of the country.
