Where is the best place to mount nautilas horn on 1999 st1100? Got one from son who mounted his on vintage beemer and now I need to get some attention from the soccer moms.

I mounted mine inside the front compartment, to the left of the head-light. If I had done it again, I would have run extra wires and mounted it to the right side of the headlight on the support frame (where the fuzes/other connections are). Used industrial-type zip strips, but standard large hose rings (like the ones you use for your clothes dryer hose) would be even better. Just remember to make sure the horn is upright and the inlet hose is connected and in an area that will get as little dust as possible.
Installed mine last year and love it to death...many a cup of java in the hands of cell-phone talking cagers have been lost due to this horn. My ears still ring from accidentally hitting it the other day while in the garage.

Midlife, you if you have ABS, you might not find room in the nose. I didn't. Mine is mounted on the left side, attached to the tip-over wing bars under all the skin.

Hi midlife
Like Joe no way could I fit mine in the nose because of the ABS gear. So it went down by the left tip over, actually to the rear of it. Works just fine. And less plastic to remove too.
Cheers

I might have some pictures at home of how I installed mine if you want them. I should have looked for them last night and spaced it off.

Okey-dokey. I'll dig through my archives tonight and track them down. Fair warning, I'm in the "ugly but it works" camp with my installation. At least you can't see the ugly installation when the skin is on. :crackup

Hello ...,
With the ABS, you don't have the option of using the left side, ala:

But there's enough room on the right side. In fact, I'd have probably installed my compact Stebel Nautilus on the right if the ballast for my HID wasn't already in that spot. Here's a pic that should help (click on the pic and then view the next few shots in my Webshots album):

<edit: go to the last pic in the album which best shows the space avail for a Stebel behind the tupperware but not blocking the trumpets.>
For some more ideas/other locations, you might ask on ST-Riders also (saw you sign-up I think... 4xST11riders there as here).

Here's the best shot I've got of my Stebel mounted. This is the left-hand side, under the skin, behind the tip-over bars.
I used plastic wires tires, multiply-redundant, to put the thing in place because I'm just not a metalworker.

JOE - Since you installed your Stebel down there, have you had any trouble with water getting in it or any other problems? I've got three to install on all of my ST1100s (2 are ABS models) and I sure don't want to have to do this more than once. Thanks!
Not sure if this has been discussed before, but I recently learned on a VFR site (www.vfrdiscussion.com) that it is possible to separate the metal compressor from the plastic horn on a Stebel Nautilus Compact (and, presumably, a regular Nautilus), thus opening up many more mounting location possibilities... I popped my spare Compact apart (and back) the other day--easy peasy. Looks like all I'll need is some appropriately sized clear plastic tubing to connect the two components together.
My next thought was, seeing as I might now be able to mount it somewhere convenient, would the non-Compact Nautilus be even better (louder) than the Compact? ;)

JZH - Thanks for the tip. That would be mighty handy as to opening up the mounting options!

Hi Uncle Phil
Mines mounted right where Joe has his and as yet I've had no problems with water ingress and Ive ridden in some foul English and Welsh weather.
Paul
I decided I had to see for myself, so I ordered a regular Nautilus...:)
And, yes, it is essentially identical to the Compact. I don't have them both here, but attached is a pic that shows the Nautilus apart. There are two "catches" that have to be lifted away before the compressor can be slid down, the obvious one on the top, and the vent on the side. There is no obvious way to mount the separated horn part on the bike (i.e., no bolt holes), but that shouldn't be a huge problem to overcome. HTH.
