Wow! I never thought that I'd be posting this so close to the last group buy, but here goes.

Since the last group buy ended, several of you have contacted me about wanting a set of the bars. As my orders have already been filled, and I have no extras, I will be unable to help. However, I am posting this thread to see if we have enough interest for another run. I need at least 15 orders to do a production run. For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, this will help:

http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14622

You can find all of the information on the bars at the links above as well as performing a search with the key term being tip-over bar[s]. I won’t accept any money orders via mail and/or Paypal before the end of February. This should give any new folks a chance to get in on the group buy and any that didn’t make the last run a chance as well. I’ll be happy to answer any questions that you have for me. Thanks again to everyone that participated in the last group buy, and as always I hope you all continue to enjoy the bars. Hopefully, you won’t have to be putting them to use anytime soon, but they’ll be there if and when you ever do need them.

Ride Safe,
bygdawg

Additional bar shots (pardon the pun) including a few with MCL's Peg Lowers for passenger can be found at the following link. Please pay no attention to the Ninja. He just hangs out in my garage from time to time:

There's even a little video footage about the bars at the link available in the following thread:
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20891

The bars are made of solid 9/16th inch steel and have four weld points for improved rigidity. They are designed to work in conjunction with the front crash bars to protect the rear bags, trunk, panniers, and more importantly your leg should you tip-over or go down at slow speed. Although, I have had good success with crashes up to 35+ mph with them from others who have been involved in accidents with them on.

A few testimonials from others on the bars:

v65saber:

"bygdawg,

THANKS !!!!!!

I got the bars last on last month. Went to the MTF FLC2C III last weekend and my bad leg got me. Went to put ' ALLIS ' on the center stand and it was off balance the more up I pulled the more over she went OOOPS.

End result nada nil nothing not a mark on the bags, mirrors, no where. THEY WORK !!!!!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ShinySideUpAZ:

"Just got back from the hospital. On the way home from work a cager left turned in front of me at an intersection. Guy was a complete moron. In was in the intersection when he pulled out. I started braking and scrubbed off some speed when I hit a raised crack in the road. The bump caused the front wheel to lockup and the bike folded under me. I stayed on/with the bike for the twenty feet I slid.

Many thanks to Bygdawg and the tip over bars, they kept the bike from crushing my legs."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brighteyesue:

"I have a 32" inseam and a wide Corbin seat and tiptoe it most times. I admit, my BlackBeauty is a heavy beaST to wheel around the garage. Yes I have laid her down, not at speed though. I HIGHLY recommend bygdawgs tipover bars. I hate to say this, but I have used them and more than once too. Not only have they saved my feet/legs, but my saddle bags too."

"bygdawg,
Just wanted to thank-you for selling these tip-over wings. I bought a pair about 2 months not expecting to use them so soon. I was riding home yesterday afternoon when I got caught in a freak thunderstorm. I was exiting of the highway on the off ramp and the ST went out from under me. IMHO the tip-over wings at least save my leg and let me separate for my ST as I slid across the off ramp on my butt. I am a firm believer in ATGATT and with that the tip-over wings and most importantly the protection of God I walked away without a scratch or even a bruise. Riding today on my kids CRF 150 I have more bruises. This is my first accident in 21 years and 70,000 miles of riding. If this is the worst than I'll take it. Will keep everyone updated on how insurance checks out. My question is how much does it take to total an ST? Thanks again for the service you provide for those of us who ride ST's

Chris"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Herleman:

"I was doing about 40 to 45 mph when I had a disagreement with a large dog.

We both lost.

The bars did their job well (well the right side did, the left side was just loafing along in the air)."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

brentster:

"Well I guess it had to happen.. I just wasn't prepared for it to occur only 10 days after I bought the bike.

I came to a stop on a street in Leesburg, VA and when I put my foot down, my right foot just kept on sliding. Turns out there was a bit of anti-freeze on the road and my dang foot magically hit the 6" puddle like some kind of friggin' miracle.

The bike tips to the right and as much as I tried, I just couldn't keep it from tipping over. DANG that monster is heavy!

The bike stalled out and it took a bit of effort to get it upright again.. After a few attempts to start, she fired right up. The engine guard cover and nut under the right side peg got a decent scuff. The right hard bag got nick'd on the bottom a bit, but it's not really noticeable unless you're looking for it. All things considered, I consider myself pretty lucky to have escaped with only minor cosmetic flaws.

Ironically, I had a conversation with my wife about the expense related to bygdawg's tip-over bars before I left the office and she asked me if they were really necessary. I guess now the answer is a resounding 'yes'."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

XWINGER:

"All I can say is that if you have NOT purchased the crash bars offered on this site, DO IT. Can't remember who it was that made them. If someone knows who this is, please post a link. I was making a hard left turn on a BRAND NEW fron tire when it washe out on me. Was going maybe 15 - 20 MPH. NOT A SCRATCH except where there was supposed to be (front crash bar and rear crash bar). It would have cost a heck of a lot more to replace a saddlebag than these rear crash bars cost. Who knows what else would have gotten banged up (top case, seat, etc). Just remember, IT'S NOT IF, IT"S WHEN.

Someone please post link for these crash bars and EVERYONE get a pair.

Thanks"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2Dogs:

"S.S.,
I installed passenger lowering brackets after the Tip Over bars to give my pillion more room. This worked great. and... The T.O.Bars have saved more than the cost of the bars and the brackets 5X over...
+! bygdawg"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Machog:

"My tip over bars saved me when I fell stationery, at a gas station, some cat litter been put down to absorb a gas spill, turned into a person spill! Luckily there were plenty of people watching, so my embarassment was complete.

But saved me from buying an expensive right hand saddle bag, money well spent with BIGDAWGS.

I have the passanger & rider foot peg extensions from MCL and there is no interferance for either rider with the tip over bars. But, rider pegs now touch down in the twisties if my toecap doesn't scrape first.

Machog"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Raven:

"+1 on the BYGDAWG's! I know mine saved me a world of hurt!

My sometime passenger says it's more difficult to pivot one's foot when mounting or dismounting using the peg. However, they've stated they'd rather be slightly inconvenienced than remove the tip-over bar because they feel both safer having them there and safer for me having them there when solo."

"Got creamed by an idiot backing out of their driveway this morning on the way to work. I thought they'd stop at the end of their driveway to check for traffic but they didn't even look. That's what I get for thinking.

Fortunately I'd slowed up but didn't get the opportunity to do much in terms of avoidance except the brakes. ATGATT - that's a no brainer. Scraped my helmet, bit my lip and barked my shins on the fairing (ouch) but otherwise okay. Thank goodness for the rear crashbars/bag protectors b/c they kept the bike off me - I'd of probably broke my leg otherwise! Tore the back bumper cover off the cage and scraped up the right side of the bike as the rear end continued on around.

I'm pretty sure it's totalled. Front forks are crunched and the front wheel is jammed against the front casing. Can't get it to shift into neutral and the rear wheel won't roll with the clutch squeezed. Fuel pump isn't buzzing when you turn the key either. Only 4475 miles!

Thankfully there's another 06 at the dealer and they've pulled it aside for me so once the Raven is totalled I'll be back on the road with Raven2."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RTETR:

"I've not needed to use them since they've been on but they'd have saved me $400.00 damage back in 2005 when I laid it down gentle in a Calgary parkinglot... right smack on a cement parking curb!"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

l3194ff:

"Well pulling into a parking lot full of people saw a few spaces open and decided to ride threw to back into the spot. Well making the slow right hand turn the bike just went over. Luckily the parking lot full of people was gracious enough to help pick up the bike. Only damage was a scrap to the tip over bar and scrap to the tip over wing. Oh yeah my pride."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John (STJMG):

Best farkle money spent. Saved me again last week when I leaned over the bike and forgot the kickstand was not down!! Not a mark on the bike!!!

Some day it will happen to you!!!!!!!

Hope you guys don't mind me posting your personal experiences. If you do, just let me know, and I'll happily remove the post. Also, if any of you have information that you want to share or additional information that you want to share about your experiences with the rear tip-over bars, feel free to do so here.

Thanks and Ride Safe,
bygdawg

P.S. Prices are as follows: If paying via paypal: $245 U.S. and $255 Canada
If paying via money order: $240 U.S. and $250 Canada

Note: The additional $5.00 helps cover part of the paypal fees.

Australia: $275, as it cost me around $30 to ship to that area. Europe and other parts of the world will probably be very close to the $275 figure. I have shipped to various parts of Canada, England, and even Singapore and Japan.

A plug for bygdawgs rear tip over bars. I managed to be the last on the list for the February 08 production. The bars arrived last week as promised. They are well made, nice finishing touch with thin felt pads between the frame and bars & the powdercoat finish is perfect. Installed them today, it took just 15 minutes, made easy by the instructions that were provided. They look great on the bike -identical to bygdawgs pictures.

This was a must have extra safety feature for me to help keep the ST off my leg and to mitigate damage to the bike in the event of a fall. They are a super innovation from bygdawg ;) though I hope that I will never put them to the test :pray1:

Here is another pitch for Bygdawg. I have had my bars for over a year. Last December I had the unfortunate opportunity to use them. I tipped over at a stop in Lordsburg, NM. I was under the bike when the whole event stopped. Not only did they protect the right bag, but me as well. The bike was completely supported for a moment by the front tip over wing and the bar. I was 700 miles into a trip. I had no injuries, the bike sustained a broken right mirror and I was able to continue on.

So whats up with that?Dont want to sound rude... but i thought you said a while back you were gonna develop something for us ST1100 guys...your tipover bars are great but frankly I am getting a little putoff by all the group buys that have been exclusive to the 1300s'...:(

bygdawg
03-20-2008, 08:52 AM
Well...I'm pretty sure I never said that I was going to produce them for the 1100. However, I did mention that Les Johns discussed the possibility of coming up with something when when we were at NatSToc last year. If he has done that, I am not aware of it at this time. The problem with the 1100 is that there are no good mounting places using existing holes which would leave one to have to cut or drill into the plastic somewhere. The beauty of the 1300 bars, aside from the fact that they simply work, is that they mount in about 15 minutes using existing hole locations. I'd bet dollars to donuts that if I created some 1100 bars that required cutting or drilling on the bike, half, if not all, of you 1100 owners wouldn't purchase a set. So, in that regard, it's not economically feasible for me to tackle such a project. Heck, I can barely get by doing production runs of the 1300 bars in groups of 15 and still make it worth my while. I think sometimes you guys forget that I'm a teacher and that I do these things on the side. I don't make a living doing this, and I don't have a dedicated shop with employees working all week to help me crank these things out. If the 1100 was easy to create these things for, someone would already be doing it. It was only out of necessity that I created the 1300 bars. Much to my surprise, after creating the first and only set that I planned on making, I have sold over 200 sets inside and outside the U.S. Necessity is the mother of invention, but nothing is created without $$$. The cost to design and apply for a patent on these things for a discontinued bike is simply cost prohibitive for me. I'd love to help you guys, but I just can't at this time. However, I will be more than happy to sale you some 1300 bars to allow you to see if you can adapt them to your 1100's in some way. There's not much that a cutting torch and welder can't fix. :capwin:

On the topic of necessity, I think STEPHANY AULENBACK said it best:

"Necessity is the mother of Invention, and, as everybody knows, a skinny woman named Poverty is the mother of Necessity. Necessity is gritted teeth and a rusty helmet of hair. Invention is a real shock — she's beautiful, sleek and lively, eyes the color of sky. Necessity can hardly believe this girl belongs to her. Sometimes it seems Invention doubts it, too. She's forever looking beyond Necessity, over her shoulder, for someone else more plausible. Necessity doesn't want her daughter to leave her, though she knows that's what daughters often do.

Invention was planted in Necessity's belly by Inspiration, one of a significant number of wandering men who, years ago, came through the town on the trains. He was, he said, looking for work. He and Necessity lay down together in the ditch on the field side of the railroad tracks. They might have been heading for the long grass, or for the trees over by the river, but they didn't get that far. Necessity's need was too strong. It wasn't like making love. It was more like some kind of desperate struggle. Before Inspiration left, he chicken-scratched two signs in the dirt: "Kind-Hearted Woman" and "Get out Fast."

Whatever Necessity has to do, she does. So she married Duty, the son of the stationmaster, Stipulation. Eight months later, Invention was born with a caul covering the two tiny wings on the back of her neck. While the other children learned their ABCs, Invention was learning to fly. After work, in the evenings, people gathered in the field to watch her move across the sunset. No one was prouder than Duty.

Now and then Invention pretended to fall — she came spiraling down out of the sky like a twirling maple key — and Duty ran to catch her. She kissed the tip of his nose and everyone smiled.

Stipulation, who had a bad squint, remained suspicious.

If Inspiration were there, he'd have scratched Invention a warning: "Bad-Tempered Man."

Stipulation told Necessity that her daughter was unseemly, that she put on airs and shouldn't be permitted to show off. His opinions of Invention got the better of him once and he came at her with a pair of rusty scissors, threatening to cut off her wings.

But that's all in the past, and now Invention is grown. Young men try to woo her. Her childhood pal Imagination claims to be in love. He's attractive, he's charming, and Invention can't believe a word he says. Patent is the most persistent. Every time he sees her, he makes a grab for her hand, trying to push a promise ring onto her finger. Invention, thinking fast, introduces him to her cousin Novelty. Novelty is pretty and a little bit silly — just perfect for him. With Patent distracted, Invention walks out with Amusement, even though she knows better. And then there's Commitment, waiting in the background. A pleasant, steady fellow, Invention thinks, though perhaps a bit too eager to please. She agrees to keep him in mind. But while she dithers, Creativity, the town's other beauty, manages to seduce him. The two of them marry and have so many babies so fast, no one can keep track.

Invention seeks her grandmother's advice. Poverty tells her granddaughter, "A thing cannot be both a door and a key. A thing cannot be both a pair of glasses and an eye." But Invention believes a thing can.

If Inspiration were there, he'd chicken-scratch her a sign: "Turn Left Here."

Invention looks at pictures of city people in the newspaper. She reads their names and the stories about them: Ambition, Achievement, Triumph, and Success. She'll leave town and soon. That must be what the wings are for. Yes, soon she'll kiss Necessity good-bye and go."

I'm going to wait a few days and see if we get any more hits. I always have one or two drop out when money time comes around. When it gets that time, I'll PM you with payment details via money order or paypal. I won't take any funds until you've received the PM from me. Once all of the funds are in, I will start the production run and ship your bars as soon as they are completed and powder coated.

Here's how this will work:

1. I'll PM you with paypal or money order instructions.
2. You submit payment via your choice of the two methods above.
3. Once all the funds are in, I will start production.
4. When production is finalized, I will ship your bars to the location you specify in whichever payment method you choose to use.

What you will get:
1. One pair of steel rear tip-over bars powder coated in black.
2. 4 Stainless bolts for mounting the bars.
3. Mounting instructions for mounting the bars.

Mounting the bars takes 15 minutes on average with less than 30 minutes almost a certainty, unless you stop to eat a sandwich before mounting the second bar. LOL

That's interesting cause I'm reading the original thread and it says $195. What changed?

Since you're paying attention, you should also note that the thread you are referring to is from September of 2006. Quite a bit has happened since then. Oil is over $100 a barrel. We have the first female and the first black man running for President of the United States. We just had the 5 year anniversary of the Iraq war. Home foreclosures are at an all-time high. The U.S. postal service increased their rates. I started shipping with stainless bolts that run about $5.00 per bolt, and four go out. I also changed the grade and size of steel to make the bars even more rigid than before. In short, the bars are different from the bars at that time and the cost of materials and shipping have forced me to increase my price to you the consumer. Welcome to America. If you don't think the $245 via paypal for U.S. orders is worth it's weight, go back and ask a few of the folks that have had to use them. I may be biased, but it's still a bargain in my book. Alas, I digress. In all seriousness, I strive to give you guys the best price that I can and still make it worth my while to churn the things out. You do bring out a good point in that I should add this to that thread so as to avoid confusion. I will do that as soon as I post this. Thanks.

I have decided to start taking funds today so that we can start production early next week. A few things need to happen on your part to make sure that happens:
1. Ship your money order if paying via that method by end of day tomorrow.
2. Post you paypal payment by the end of the week at the latest.
All funds must be in by the end to the first of next week in order for me to start production early next week. Therefore, you can't dilly dally. Your prompt payment will ensure that production gets started as early as possible. Once I have received your payment, I will mark you paid, and you will be down for a set in this production run. If I haven't received your funds by the first of next week and you haven't notified me with an explanation as to why, I will mark you unpaid, and you will not be part of the production run. I always make a few extra sets of these that will be available after all group buy bars have shipped for a price of $255 for U.S. orders and will be available on a first come first serve basis. If you want in on this group buy, you have until the end of the week before I will close it to any new comers. So, if you've been on the fence, now is the time to speak up.

Just for a kick I looked up prices for the cover on a 2006:

BODY, R. *2TN266* (BLACK/MAT BLACK) 001 $442.07

COVER, R. *NHB01* (GRAPHITE BLACK) 001 $379.58

Well worth the cost for these tip over bars, this is for one side only,
total $821.65 to replace body and cover.

Ive had the tip over bars for about a month now, and low and behold, they have already paid for themselves. When backing down a friends driveway I put my foot right into a hole I didn't see and she went over. No problem at all. I picked it right back up. not a scratch on the mirror or exhaust pipes just a tiny scratch on the tip over bar and stock tip over wing! Now I just got to get him to fix that hole...:D

A little universal gloss black touch-up found at any auto store will patch that scuff on the bar right up. Then, you'll be good as new. :D Glad to hear they saved you some $$$.

I'm glad I got in on the first group buy, something like $189!

But to those who don't have them yet, these are of excellent finish quality (I'd go with the stainless steel screws) and cheap insurance over the cost of replacing/repainting a scuffed bag.

I also added the passenger lowering pegs available elsewhere, and I even changed my wife's pegs to peg-boards. Now she rides in style!

I just thought I'd give everyone an update. The steel came in last week and production is under way. As soon as we finish production, I will get them to the powder coaters. As soon as the powder is on, I will get them boxed and shipped out to you guys. I have also ordered the stainless bolts, and they should be arriving next week sometime. The bolt shop guys notified me that my bolt cost was going up .50 per bolt but only charged .25 extra this round. This will not affect any of you, but it looks like prices may have to go up slightly on the next group buy. I guess this gas crunch and rising prices everywhere is starting to affect us all.

The steel was delayed about a week. So, that pushed me off target a little bit. However, I still hope to be able to ship by the end of the month. I'm hoping to finish the fabrication by the end of this week and carry them to the powder shop the same day. If that happens, I could possibly ship on the 30th. If that doesn't happen, I may not get to ship until May 2nd. In either case, I suspect that most of you will have them in hand by May 7th or 8th, excluding none U.S. residents. Please keep in mind that these are one off units which simply means they are built by hand one at a time without the use of a production line and conventional stamping methods. With that being said, you will be very happy with the quality when they arrive. While I do strive to be expedient, my primary concern is product quality, and I'm sure you'll agree that you want the best quality for your $$$.

So, it looks like I'll be doing that this weekend and dropping them off at the powder shop on Monday. Depending on whether or not he can get them done before Friday will have a direct impact on my ship date. I'm hoping he can get them coated before Friday and I can ship on Friday or Saturday. I just wanted to update you guys to let you know what was going on. Please put me down for a pair. This morning it just so happened that I laid my '07 down on its side. I made a turn onto another road and gave it some gas and ended up doing a 180 deg turn with the bike sliding out from under me and away without me. Luckily for me the previous owner had the foresight to purchase these bars. The bar on the right side scraped away a section that was about 3/8 x 1.5 but there wasn't any other damage to the bike other than the front plastic rub strip. I suffered a small raspberry to my right leg but no other damage. Yes sign me up. thank you

Sorry to hear about the drop, but I'm always glad to hear from a satisfied customer. Seriously, all of you guys that have had incidents and contacted me to thank me personally (you know who you are) have really made me feel even better about this product that I make, especially since I never had any intention of building more than the one set that I built for myself. I can't put into words how good it makes me feel to know that something I have made has saved someone physical damage or, and of lesser importance, bike damage. Bikes and bike parts can always be replaced, granted at a rather large cost these days, but body parts are a bit harder to come by. I hope all of you in this group buy, as I tell all of my customers, never get the opportunity to use these things. However, if you ever should need them, they will be there for you. Ride Safe...

NOTE: Please be sure to find the bolts and mounting instructions in with the packaging materials before discarding anything.

No sweat. It's just a shame you weren't going to be over this way so we could have just done the install here. Watch for snakes while living in that van down by the river. ;)

Good deal.

Some people shutter about putting metal to metal, so I put them on as a bit of a buffer when installing them. If you don't care and/or like them, you can pull them off.

Got mine today in Everett WA.

Thanks BygDawg.

Wow! The P.O. got them from North MS. to WA in two business days???? That's crazy! That's almost as quick as I can ride over there. :D

bygdawg,
I'm new today but would really appreciate knowing if any tip-over bars are left and, if so, how much they are? Please sent me an e-mail. Thanks!
