I've had the tach/speedo housing off several times now to install speakers behind those two speaker grills (did Honda put the grills in the fairing only to forget to put speakers behind them?), so the learning curve has gotten pretty good.
1. Elevate your windshield all the way up to get it out of the way.
2. Remove the 4 push in rivets and 4 pull up rivets in the front 'dash' panel.
2a. Unscrew 4 screws, 2 on each side of the housing.
3. Slide it up and back.
4. Reach under the 'dash, pull back the rubber boot with a wiring bundle leading into it, and unclip the two electronic wiring clips leading into the back of the tach/speedo housing.
5. Remove the mirror housings from each side. Be Brave! Pull up and back on the housings. They are clipped in place by 3 hefty clips each, two on top and one toward the bottom. Don't use any pry tools, just pull them up and back, but not so forcefully that you rip out the turn signal wiring. There is slack in the wiring so that you can disconnect the wiring.
6. Remove 6 bolts (bolts screw into metal fastenings)...2 in each fairing pocket and 1 on each side now revealed by the mirror housing removal.
7. Wriggle the tach/speedo housing back and up to remove. There are a few plastic placement tabs that might catch, just nudge them aside.
Now you can see what size and space you have for speaker installation or that nifty gear indicator installation found elsewhere on this site. I put in 4X6 Pioneer TS-A4670Rs bought at Best Buy for $71. They are 3-way to give the best sound response, made of polypropylene to withstand moisture, and can take 120w of power which should be enough unless you're deaf.
4" square ones also sounded good and are simplier to install, but they were only 2-way. Marine speakers from West Marine were thought to be a good idea until I got the housing off and realized that there was no way that they'd fit.
