My 21 yo niece who was recently in Africa with the Youth With A Mission ministry program contracted malaria while there and is pretty bad shape. For some reason, she didn't receive any treatment for 3 weeks and is now in a Denver ICU. While she's on meds and seems to be improving, she is far from out of the woods.
Chrystal is a kind, loving person and a faithful servant of the Lord. Prayers would be appreciated.

John,
Chrystal and family will be in my prayers for physical healing and mental strength and well being. Man, some things are so hard to understand. As this thread lengthens, I hope you can find a way to share it with her. No doubt the love and compassion from the ST community will trill her.
Please keep us posted on her progress...physically and mentally.
She will be included in mine, and she sounds like a special young lady .

Thanks, guys. I'll keep you updated. This is one of a parent's greatest fears. Her mom and dad are emotionally spent and physically exhausted. Your prayers will help give them strength.

My youngest daughter was in a malaria ridden area of Africa last summer, with a mission youth group. The supervision was excellent and especially with regard to prevention of malaria. I'm in areas of the world with malaria issues all of the time with my SCUBA business. I spend a lot of time advising my clients. Dealing with the illness is NO FUN!
I'm sorry about your niece John. They have some pretty amazing treatment for malaria now...but it's going to take years off her life at the tail end. It's powerful medicine!!
I hope she recovers quickly and without issue.

Thanks everyone! Here's a quick update. Chrystal has the worst form of malaria, but it's the one that's not recurring, so at least we've got good news there. About 25% of her red blood cells were infected by the parasites.
My sister in law just left us an update to let us know the doctors believe that all of the affected blood cells have been knocked out and now they are just dealing with the effects on her body of all of those blood cells being destroyed! She's been battling fever and dehydration, but it looks like she's turned the corner today as by noon she was much more alert and feeling better. Still not out of the woods, but definitely heading in the right direction. You could feel the relief in my sister in law's voice.
Thanks again for everyone's prayers and good wishes.

Sounds like the prayers are working - she's got mine, too.
All the best for Chrystal & family.
John,
I'm just now reading this thread...
I have no doubt that Chrystal is a very special person and God is allowing her light to shine in this trying time. My prayers are on the way for her, you, and the rest of her family.
By the way, when she's up for conversation, please tell her that I think the spelling of her name is pretty cool... ;)
Please keep us posted.

Thanks again everyone. We just got an update from my brother-in-law and Chrystal's condition continues to improve. She's able to spend more time (a couple of hours) out of bed and is keeping more food down. They are starting to decrease the amount of meds she's getting via IV's. It's a relief to hear Chrystal's folks upbeat again. This has definitely been a very, very tough week for them.
