Big Al,
Personally, I prefer "Yuengling", but I doubt if anyone from New England has ever even heard of it.
Some of us New Englanders enjoy a "Yingling" when we're in the Keystone State. Black & Tan makes a nice finish to the day.

So Big Al, how many beers do you recommend I put in each saddlebag to balance the bike? :D
Well Let's see....
At 35 liters each (x2) that equals 918.48 gallons, 73.89 pints, or 2,367.2 ounces (/12= 197.27) (/24)= 8 cases of beer with a little room to spare.
That with your topbox you can supply the group a total of........ 14 cases of beer! :bow1: :beer2: :beer3: :beer8:
You wouldn't happen to have a trailer for your STeed, would you? :D

Got my shirts in the mail, they came out good indeed!
Also took a family camping outing last weekend, and I was able to get everything essential for two, along with my wife onto the bike. Best of all it stayed on the bike the whole ride (though there weren't many rough roads). PS the back rack will hold more than the 10lbs. Momma Honda lists for it. The STeed may have approached the Jed Clampet Truck look, but not really quite as I refrained from hanging things off of the T-bags (I shoulda got a picture).
I'm stressing, there is only somewhere around 4000 mi. on the bike and the rear tire is beginning to look a tad peek-ed (poorly). Man that seems early as another thousand or two looks like replacement time. I'm thinking I may have to go for those Metz.Z6s for ConSTOC after all (my poor wallet). What do these guys do to get 10,000 out of a rear tire? Maybe I'm jumping the gun, I'll have to look again.

Don't ask Michele about the time I pulled a burning marshmellow out of the fire too quick and it flung off the stick and flew onto and stuck to my eyebrow..ON FIRE  ..I had to rescue myself because everyone was too busy peeing their pants laughing so hard... :o:

Also,
Michele and I will be taking care of Hamburgers and Hot Dogs for the gang on Friday evening..Our Compliments
I'll have at least 2 grills going. You just have to tells us when to fire them up..
I'm thinking of making an apple cobbler on the fire with a dutch oven for dessert..
Brian has the campground cookout on Saturday when we get back in so Sat dinner is taken care of as well as the lucnh stop Brian has planned on the ride..

Carl I guess the T-Bag worked out Ok for you. Where did you camp? Where did you end up getting light weight sleeping bags? I may have to go that route as well I think mine is a bit to big and heavy for the bike and the time of year. Its getting closer the anticipation is growing. I am going on a run this weekend to benefit a childrens summer camp, as long as it's not as the temps aren't as oppressive as they have been so far this week. 97 deg 96% humidity is just not fun. :03biker:

Man that seems early as another thousand or two looks like replacement time.
Carl, if your rear tire is fading faster than your front, consider the ME880 for the rear when you do a tire change. It's a harder compound than the Z6. Especially if you travel 2-up, that harder compound will last longer. Since I rarely ride 2-up I didn't bother with the Z6/ME880 combo, but since you seem to bring Dawn along pretty often it may make your tire changes less frequent.

Just so long as whatever vehicle it is can carry a six pack of black and tan I'm happy.
If the little bumps in the center treads are really the wear bars I think they are, there is about 1/32 of an inch of tread above them both front and rear. the rear has cupped and the front has a little bit also. At only 3900 mi. and change. This seems to be eating away pretty quick and this last weekends slab trip to Lake George camping, flat spotted the front and rear pretty good. This tread depth is hinting I'll get about half the mileage I thought I would with the ST unless I'm overreacting.
Bones, Dawn and I do put on some two up riding though and that has included some pretty brisk cornering. This I suppose stresses the tires more, though I'm guessing it is braking and acceleration more than turning since I am maintaining reasonable tread on the sides so far. I am not particularly light on the brakes or throttle, but not maximally harsh either. My type of acceleration habits has the computer in at 38 mpg. average which is a real 44 or so. I use the front brake about the same as I do the gas, though I'm a quite a good bit more gentle with Dawn on. Perhaps I'm crying wolf, since I haven't been paying attention to tire tread before this, and maybe I'm misjudging the wear rate by mis-remembering original tread depth.
Anyway if those lumps in the tread are wear bars, the front and back are about even up for wear.
STeve,
The T bag worked out real well. I strapped another one that we already had onto the top of it though, or we'd have had no clothes with us. The 2 T bags together were almost as tall as Dawn :D We stayed at the Hearthstone in Lake George, but took a look at Roger's Rock at the other end of the lake. That had sections with more private sites. It also has a nice beach on the lake like Hearthstone. It's about 40 min. from the town of Lake George on 9n. It's close to Hauge which has CR8 which is a nice road to ride on over to Schroone lake with the bike.
We stayed at Lake Luzirne in the area before, but it has a crappy beach and many, many, large man eating bugs.
We have mummy sacs for sleeping bags. If they feel to confining you can always leave the top unzipped and put your jacket on you like a blanket. I got mine in a local camp store, but here is a few candidates on campmore.com that would likely fit you and stuff up to fit in the side bag easily enough, with room for other stuff also. They stuff to 6 by 16 (I stuff mine to more like 8x13). We have a different brand due to local buying. Campmore squished up sleeping bags. (http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=38505756&memberId=12500226) Here's another. another bag (http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=38505752&memberId=12500226) and here is the page with a big bunch of them. Clicky on the individual ones and they tell you stuff size etc. look for one that comes with a stuff sack. Your legs stay close together in a mummy bag. Somewhere I think there was a square bag with small dimensions but I don't remember which one. Bunch of bags (http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=40000000226&storeId=226&categoryId=73068&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=244)

Carl I rode CR8 to Schroon Lake while we were there nice ride. Man there are so many nice roads in that area. Glad the T-Bag helped. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again. How did the show go in NYC? Thanks for the tips on the bags I may just use the one I have I don't camp all that much so I don't know it if its worth buying a new bag. I did get a nice self inflating sleeping pad. We didn't have stuff like that when I was camping regularly:(
:03biker: Brian I rode home in one of those storms tonight man there was lightning everywhere the STeed handled the wind and rain ok but there sure are some vicious storms out there tonight. But at least they cooled the air a bit we had 102 here today. And you could cut the air with a knife it was so thick.

Hey STeve, just a side note. Watch out for that New Jersey speeding ticket push complete with tickets for 5mph over, that was posted here earlier on.
The NY group show went over very well, but dead on sales.
The T-bag was perfect and holds a lot of stuff including the queen size air mattress. A topbox wouldn't have come close to doing it unless it had a rack on top for an additional t-bag to tie onto.
Man storms on a bike suck.

I didn't see that post Carl but I have seen no signs of a speeding ticket push. In fact On my way home last night I passed 2 of our fine State troopers sitting in the median of I295 I was going about 80 and getting passed by cars quite regularly. They didn't even bat an eye. :03biker: ;)

STeve, I don't know how accurate it is, but the statement was a bunch of $$$ were slated for a very large anti speeding push. Part of the dough was supposed add officers to that duty in order to write tickets for 5mph over with instructions to write them every 10 minutes.
Perhaps it's a load of :bsflag: but I thought I'd mention it to you so you can keep an extra eye out in case it's so.

So, Guys,
With a heavy bunch of bikes (17 bikes) coming we might be best off splitting into smaller groups for the ride, like maybe three groups, with leaders who know the routes? It would make dealing with traffic and the like easier.
Just a thought I had tonight though, what do you all think?

That's a pretty solid idea I think... but if we use Eddies model, there won't be any beer left for the red bikes when they finally return...

I think that splitting into a few groups is a good idea. I'll have directions printed out onto a tankbag sized paper for everyone to take, so the other groups shouldn't get lost. I tried this method when I did the test ride and all my turns came just about perfectly when my directions said they were coming up. The only problem I see with the blue first, red second thing is that now us silver bikes will definely have to deal with slower traffic! :D
Actually it's probably a good idea. At least if our silver group runs at the rear we will come across any lost riders before they need to make a u-turn! :D

Brian,
Maybe the plan is that you lead one group, John another and myself with the third leaving at 5 minute or so intervals..Also a side benefit we've been meaning to ride together for awhile now and this gives us an excuse to check out the route one evening...

Good leaders, :) :bow1: Times getting closer. :D :03biker: :04biker: :biker:
Well guys, I completely understand why the slower blue and silver want to put the red in the middle :03biker: :biker: :04biker: in order to corral the red in to the speed of your slower STeeds. I know that's so we can't slip away, use our superior red speed, and arrive at the beer first. It's a legitiamate concern on your parts. :D
That's OK, after all everyone gets thirsty after a good ride, and if you let us reds go our own pace we might get so carried away we'd drink it all before you're able to show up. Yes... It's just as well, cause if you turned us reds loose and we drank all the beer :capwin: I'd feel bad afterwards (full belly and all) :( BURRRRP! and pro'lly not rest real well from having to pee a few too many times in the middle of the night anyway :D
PS Guzzi's are slow but very cool. The cool factor should allow them into the faster red group. :)

Hah! I thought that photo would have numerous levels of humor to it when you took it Bones.
I'll have you know the lacies turn the red she devil on. WHenever disheveled lacies are spied, she heats into a blazing red BeaST, which ends up being much faster than the other colors due to all the secret (if a bit twisted) mojo the factory installed in her as an upgrade to the previous years.
What you misread as side saddle is just us poor red riders flailing in the wind as we pass the other colors, trying to hold on to the red wonder with all that extra hidden speed and power over her predecessors. Didn't you hear me yelling Ohhhh crappppppppp ~~~~~~~~~~~ :biker: whenever I rolled on the throttle and disappeared forward into the distance back in June?
Of course then there is the secret auto pilot option (a further secret upgrade, available on the red only) where she pilots herself at warp 100 and I can lay down and nap. That might look like sidesaddle to the other colors due to the curving of the light as she breaks through several dimensional barriers. After my rest I can return through the dimensional layers to arrive just before I left and so easily beating the other colors back to wherever we started from.

Took the words right of my keyboard Bones I was thinking the same thing funny how all the guys with red bikes seem to have a complex about being fastest. It has already been scientifically proven silver is fastest. :biker: ------------------------------------------------------------ :03biker:

Actually I'm mostly an extremely laid back, mellow kind of guy, except when the occasional goofy *** mood hits that uncovers my twisted, bizarre excuse for a sense of humor.
This is going to be a heck of a good feeling though hanging and kicking back a few beers with ST loving, fresh air and campfire loving people. The Steeds will be purring that weekend.
Hey, I just got that, are you guys implying my sidesaddle post was less serious than Norman’s posts??? :p:
Dawn is mummified until coffee passes her lips in the morning. Health reasons require decaff though so is there a nearby place to buy a cup, or should we bring packets?
My bike is in pieces downstairs cooling off. I put on Turbo Tom's regulator and synced the Throttle bodies (or starter valves or whatever they really are). I got them dead nuts on so after I get it together I'm stoked to check out the throttle uptake tomorrow.
Changing the vacuum at idle did not really make much of a change in upper revs. So I'm inclined to agree it is just off closed throttle that likely is most affected. Still that sucks stock in turns so I hope this helps it.
Gotta get back to it.

It's our anniversary tonight so after work we took the bike out and rode up to Minnewaska Lake state park (the first mountain I took you guys over with the tight hairpin turn). We had a picnic up there and just got back. Life is good.
The regulator is a fine farkle indeed, you will like it STeve. I would guess the throttle body sync helped some also. It is particularly great around town and helps in turns also. I have a Morgan Carbtune or whatever they call the darn thing. It worked very well to do the sync with. Getting those hoses off the plastic 5 way connecter and back on was a bear though.
We will do another family campout on the 19th to practice some more. Gotta get in shape for that Sept. camping.

You said that right Steve...shees what the hell..In any case its done and we'll have our banner yet..Put is this way..If there are 3,000 or so STs sold every year (in the US alone) and the ST13's been out for the 3 years (9,000 us units for you math wizards..I know..not up to Norman's standards but hey one can have goals) as well as the Fine St11 for 12 years and we only got 1500 members..of which a certain percentage are active posters..I think we can do better..And ti starts witht he heart of this site..
All I wanted to do was promote our little community and make it bigger..Some people have big friggin toes though and felt I stepped on them..My next post of me is my right side kick over the windsield in its upright position!!..Don't know what the hell thats going to do except pull my hamstring :D

I hope he's willing to come along for the CONSTOC trip. I'm sure that he'd love it too. Todd - maybe you can PM him with some basic info to help him decide.
I have another friend who is interested in going. He rides a Suzuki GSXR1100. He's a bit of a speed  demon though. I have some good experience riding in packs but, my friend is horrible at it. We may have to keep him in the back of the pack. It'll be a good experience for him.

Yes I'll send Bill a PM..Although our official host is Brian (Georgeorge as it is HIS campground after all..I am just a more vocal co-conspirator)..
As far as your Gixxer friend is concerned he is more than welcome however he will need to realize that there will not be any speed-demoning at this event..There are just TOO many bikes..As of now we are most likley splitting into 3 separate groups as it is to be more manageable and safe. As you can appreciate this is a very safety consious group..And with group riding..the priority is Safety..Scenery and Comraderie..Its gonna be a fun bunch and a great weekend..but the group ride is gonna need some ground rules and understanding..
If that will be boring to him..you may suggest he take a different route..Although like I said he is very welcome provided he understands the above..Its not worth the risk to ruin what is going to be a very memorable weekend..
Thanks Al.
BTW..Don't wait for Constoc to hook up with me..Anytime you want to come down for a spin and spend the day let me know...I can meet you halfway

Hi Todd,
Thanks for the invite. I may take you up on that offer.
As for my friend. Not to worry. I will have already talked to him many times before we arrive. I think he needs the experience riding with groups. My experience has tought me that there are different riding styles in every group/orgainization. It's important to lay down the ground rules before each ride so everybody is in sync, especially with large groups.
Are you familiar with the term "Biker Ballet"? Its going to be interesting to see what a bunch of ST-ers would look like riding toghether. Escpecially after all the comments about which color is faster. - As for me? I'm mostly interested in taking in the scenery. :sun1: :cf1:

I maybe re-thinking part of the ride in..I rode RT 77 last night (which is off RT17 that we will hit) and its 13.9 miles of designated scenic road..Great road!
The benefit to taking this with a much bigger group is that route gives us more room and visibility to the next rider..Its longer and the corners are alot less tight..There are some nice twisties and the speeds are between 35 and 50 vs 25 on that part of the my original route..
I need to scout out a way to get us back to the top of 154..
Possibly this:
Right on Rt 17, Left on RT77, Left on RT80, Left on higganum rd and joins back with 154 at same spot as previous directions..
This would be the only switch..all other stops and roads remain with the benefit of less tight quarters and better visibility.
I'll let you guys know.
29 days!!

Todd,
Wow, lotta bikes. All I have is an old Streets and trips file John posted for Fridays Run. That had us popping off 691 to 66 and down 9 to 148 and the ferry.
I see 77 down to 80 (which drops you a long ways down), that then looks like 80 joins with 154 down under the ferry crossing.
Higganum Road comes off of 17 a very lot higher, and turns into Candlewood which contacts 154 above the ferry.
On St&T it looks like Bailyville Rd. 147 would take you to 17 without going through downtown Middlefield. Then you could get on Higganum shortly after.
You know in ST&T if you went from 66 R. on 147 Bailyville Rd. to 17 down to L. on 79 down to (here’s the interesting looking part on the map) L. on “County Rd.” cross over 148 onto “Little City Rd.” R. on “Jackson Rd./Mc Tigh Rd.” L. “Pokomy Rd.” directly across 81 onto “Hubbard Rd.” under Rt.9 L. onto “Beaver Rd.” L. onto Jail Hill Rd. runs into 154 just below Rock Landing. Then drop on 154 onto Ferry.
Lotsa road names but mainly a straight-ish shot with interesting squiggly things along the way. Course it could be full of so many houses driveways and blind driveway areas with low speed limits as to make the squiggly lines not fun anyway.
At any rate Johns old ST&T file only went as far as the ferry. Is there any list of roads currently to be used Friday that I can go to and put into ST&T that go all the way to the campground (even after the Ferry)? I’d like to make myself an Excel page of the route for my tank bag as soon as it’s settled.

Carl,
For a list turns by street that are currently on the board see post 183..
Route 9 is slab and it is very nice country roads around there to waste on that..
Route 77 is about 13 miles long and kind of parallels 79..It is also more beautiful..
We are kind of doing a giant upside down 'N' taking 77 south, then going along route 80 for about 10 minutes then back up Higganum road to our original 154..
I know there a lot of basically residential neighborhoods that get us through to 154 but as you said..a little more risky with 12 bikes...
The reason for my re-thinking a portion of the route is how many bikes we are having on this ride..
Taking 77 and 80 give us added line of sight to each other while still very enjoyable roads..
I'll get you a better perspective soon when I did a few more scouting rides..
What I do is generally jump on mapquest and follow the route with some mouse clicks..
Carl_T
08-17-2005, 07:38 PM
Thanks for pointing out post 183, I either missed or forgot it. I was able to get your old way added on to John's portion, and also your new proposed way (17,80, Higganem) and all the way to the campgrounds... cool.
Before ST&T I used mapquest or google maps if mapquest didn't have some little obscure thing. If one didn't have it the other did. I do like Streets and trips a lot better though, as it will green line the route and give you a blow by blow also that is easily translated by hand into an excel spreadsheet routing sheet that's easy to read on a tank-bag.
One day I'll be able to plan in ST&T and program into my GPS, but that's not until next year (when I hope to get a GPS).

Everyone on the board is very interested in motorcycling-related things.
I caught your television show for the first time last week and I enjoyed it very much. I plan on sharing the show with all on the board.
This led me to want to write to you for a story proposal and idea..
We are having an ST group ride on the weekend of Sept 16, 17, and 18. It is called ConSTOC (STOC = ST Owners Club).
Currently 19 owners of STs have committed to coming to CT for this event.
They are coming from all over New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and even 2 of our members from New Brunswick, Canada.
Our base location is WatersEdge Campground in Lebanon, CT. (One of our ST member's family owns the campground as well as I am a seasonal camper there)
Here is a link to the campground in case you want to know more about it: www.watersedgecampground.com)
We have 2 days of rides planned..
On Friday the 16th, I and a fellow CT rider will be escorting riders (approx 12 total) coming to CT from the south on a ride through the Litchfield Hills, Castle Craig in Meriden, Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, Route 154 through the CT River Valley, Gillette's Castle State Park, Devil's Hopyard State Park and finally onto the campground.
All very photo-genic places and individual factoids on these places can easily be woven into a ride feature/storyline.
See Route map as well as links for the stops and points of interest along the way:
Castle Craig: http://www.thisisct.net/castlecraig.html Gillette's Castle: http://www.thisisct.net/gillette.html
Saturday the 16th has us covering the Northeastern portion of the state along with an excursion into Rhode Island. We will be led by the owner of the campground with a planned lunch stop at the vanilla bean café.. Some very nice roads will accompany the full ST crew of 19 + bikes on this route as well.
See map:
We will come back to some campground sponsored activates: Cookout and a dance.
I think ideas around the story could be back and forth between the rides and riders, the bike and our destination points, campground.
I have told you about the rides and the destination, now for a little more about the riders and the bike itself..
Riders of the ST1300 (and its predecessor the ST1100) as well as Sport touring bikes in general like to ride..Period..The mileage that ST riders put on is huge..
I myself purchased my ST on May 20th and today have over 7800 miles in 2.5 months..I am probably average..
Here is a sampling of the mileage some of these guys put on:
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4986&page=1&pp=20
Riders of 1300's generally fall into a mostly male demographic with ages ranging mostly between 35 and 60..
One of our riders is a contributing writer for Red Rider Magazine as well as Rider magazine. (Network opportunity?)
The Bike..
This bike is Honda's best kept secret..There are not many sold in US and the market share for Sport tourers in general is very small in this country..
The best way to describe the 13 is a combination of long range ballistic missile and a very sharp bladed Swiss army knife..
Some cool stats and features of the bike
1261cc V4. 7.7 Gallon gas tank with a range of over 320 miles.
Electronically controlled windshield..Raises and lowers with the push of a button on the handlebars..(headlights do the same)
Incredibly smooth and powerful engines takes it from 0-60 in 3.4 secs, 1/4 mile in mid 11s and a top speed in the 150s
Not bad for being a relatively heavy 650lb bike..
In summary,
I think there is a ton here to work with for a segment and I would love to chat more with you about this if you would like to.
Please do not hesitate to contact me. I really hope to hear from you!
We'll see what happens..
This was originally discussed in the banner thread so I will post it there as well..

Ed are you still interested in meeting earlier on Friday at the Blue Colony Diner off I84 exit 10 in Newtown.
Just to let everyone know, Ed, Scott and I met there before a ride once for breakfast and the meal was very good. After our terrific FPR/power fuse block install the other night, Brian, Todd and I also had a very good meal there. If anyone else would like to join us for breakfast at the BC Diner at 9:00 before the Friday ride let us know.

I'll be there and 8:30 to 9:00 is good. If you are traveling east on I84 take that left (it's visible from the stop light). If you are traveling west on I84, take a right at the light (I think it's visible from there too).

Man, I'll have to leave pretty early to make that one... 220 to Southbury, haow much further to exit 10? That's sounding like a 5 am departure... how much time will I loose trying to get through Hartford at that time in the am... all of my memories of that exchange are very parking lot like...

It's about 5 minutes past Southbury. You're gonna get nailed by the Hartford traffic at that time Dude. The Waterbury traffic can get pretty nasty too with the ongoing construction. Bones knows the way down rt8 to I84 (maybe rt6?) to Southbury and then exit 10.

It's your classis Greek-owned New York style diner with a menu 20 pages long. Good regular coffee, French toast, bacon, and bagel kind of breakfast. Yeah Greg about 5 minutes if you slow down a little bit to the speed of traffic in that area, 85 - 90mph. Warning there is a State Trooper HQ in Southbury.

Bones hooked me up with the ride around, still looks like I need to plan on 5 hours, should have good light by the time I hit 91, then I can make some time Greenfield. I'm planning on hooking up with Paul-ST1300NH & Paul-PheonixRising who downgraded to a wingabego... haven't heard back from him on his plans yet, but the other Paul and I are planning on hooking up in Brattleboro. If we can stay in light traffic (light enough to get through, heavy enough to pick up forward radar hits) we should make some good time. I personally love this bike in the 90-110 range on the highway... not sure how the othrs feel about that though... :o:

If you went 95 across the George Washington (bridge would probably be the worst part), to 87N 287E and up 684N to 84E traffic would probably be thick for a bit longer but not as goofy as some of the expressways. That's only 5 minutes slower than St&Tr quickest way up the expressways, and it saves a half hour over coming up to Newburgh to get a little lighter traffic. Traffic only gets lighter after Harriman anyway the Newburgh way.

I belive it Carl I went on a ride yesterday and even here there are leaves falling already. Not many but you can see them on the road it may be because we haven't had all that much rain. But the weather down here is beautiful 80-85 with very low humidity. Nice motorcycling weather. In fact I am going on a run with the military group I have started to ride with the Green Knights on Sunday we are going to visit the Battleship New Jersey. Yesterday I went for a long solo ride ended up down at the shore at a little waterside restaurant had a great crabcake sandwich and some wings along with the wonderful smell of the sea air. It was a great day and a great ride. The perfect way to decompress from the events of the past week.

Leo,
Wow, I see what you mean. We just came off of a 100 degree day a few weeks ago with a ton of humidity which really adds to the tough part, but now we're in really nice temps. Not many areas seem to get it all. You've got to travel to more winding roads and put up with some extreme heat. We've got some very good motorcycle roads, but the winter halts riding, and grays the light for some goodly amount of time. You guys have a longer riding season to make up for the road difference. Each area has its burdens and perks.
Steve the air not only has that feel, but I heard the geese making their way a few days ago, It's a tad early.
I'm glad to hear you found a good local group. Riding the open road does help ease troubled times at least a bit. You guys have my best wishes and regrets for your troubles.
My Reservoir ride tonight chased away the cobwebs of a too full work day very well indeed. The temps ranged from 66 degrees to 72 degrees and the scenery was as beautiful as ever. I explored a couple of roads I'd never tried before, though they didn't turn out to be much for biking.
I dropped a note off where I think a local ST rider lives (poor guy is stuck with the slower silver but it perked up when it saw the red) :D up near the Reservoir on a road I took you guys on. I put this forums address in the note so we may get someone new looking in from NY. Then again, I may have had the wrong house, it was a toss up between two driveways.
I came on him exiting his driveway while out in my favorite local area, but he was headed for a trip with Buds, so not much time to talk. If he shows up I got the right house, if not I missed it. I mentioned both CONSTOC and NHfcSTOC in the note.

I just rode home from work it was 63 deg. Nice and crisp saw quite a few bikes out tonight. A real nice week ahead then its supposed to warm up a bit on the weekend. Back to the high 80s here. But not having the oppresive humidity for a few days is real nice. In Cyprus it was 45 deg ( 113 F) Whew! You just keep rubbing in that reservoir road Carl. ;)

I found a little road on ST&Trips with a bunch of switchbacks connecting up with Tannersville (the town with the juice stop that Eddie called South of the Boarder). I'm going to get up that way one of these days and see what it's like, I hope it isn't dirt, or as bad a shape as the Goat Trail.

I usually have a great commute to work, over Zoar Dam along the Housatonic River, Eddie's been on it. They're working on the dam so the route is closed and I have to make due with a more heavily traveled detour with lots of traffic lights and stop signs. This morning there was a chill in the air, so for a change I decided to check a road I had been taking that was being repaved even though it was out of the way. The freshly paved route was glass-like in its smoothness. It made me appreciate how smooth the power plant on the ST really is. Gliding is the only way I can describe it. Returning home, the weather was cool, almost cold in my mesh jacket and the ST was still gliding so effortlessly through it all. The rough pavement and the traffic controls that usually make me miss my usual route home became almost insignificant. The last couple of days have been nearly perfect. There is definitely a feel of change in the air, bring it on.

S'long as we stay between the leaves on the road, fall is one of the very finest times to be on the bike, I'm looking forward to it.
These temperatures are so nice today, I'm taking the STeed this morning to go pick up a few things and visit the endless line in the motor vehicle offices. I could get to the motor vehicle early and avoid them, but I'm taking the long way there by about an hour, so I'll have to put up with the line, it will be worth it.
There's nothing like new and well done pavement on a good road. Did the fuel pressure regulator contribute to any of your smoothness John? Did it affect the '03 as pleasantly as it did the '05?
I have to say the regulator combined with the Sargent seat and my new hand grips have made it a bit extra pleasant to swing a leg over the STeed.
morning commute here has been 45-55... nice... and a chance to get my Bal 4.0 broken in a bit, kinda stiff. Anyway the speed up break in on these textile jackets?

My '03 (like all '03's :D ) has always had a smooth engine. If it is smoother at speed it is only slightly. Transitions are noticeably smoother though. Slow speed handling, accelerating and stop and go in traffic are all improved. The FPR, the Sargent and the Z6's make the bike feel like a new and improved ST.

Same here as to range improved John (though the in-corner throttle take up was improved on mine also up to around 4200RPM or so).
My Z6s came today, I see they have the same load rating as the OEM B20s. They look like a nice deep tread, but where are the wear bars???

Look for the Metzler elephants and then look real close. I've got 6,000 miles on mine and there is plenty of meat left. I had 10,400 on the dunlops and could have gone another 4-5000 before changing them (Glad I didn't wait, the improvement is that good). I'm beginning to think I have a limp right wrist compared to some on this post who have trouble squeaking out 6,000 total  .

I have always wondered about that John I got 9500 out of my stock tyres and could have gotten at least 2K more I have since put on the AVONs and have 5K plus on them and they are still fine. Best wet traction I have had out of a tire.
Carl_T
08-26-2005, 02:28 PM
I think I'll get between 5k and 6k out of the stockers. However I put it down to a combination of 25% two-up riding and the roads here that were resurfaced by putting down a heavy oil/tar base and dumping sharp stones all over that. Of course that’s just a guess.
I have about 4 miles of the stuff that I run every few days. I’m very careful of the tire pressure, so it isn’t that. I am kind of heavy fisted with the throttle and tend to use engine braking going into certain type turns on some of the lower speed roads. I dunno, but it would make a happy wallet to get double mileage. I’m unwilling to sacrifice grip for a longer wearing tire though so I’ll probably be happy with the Z6 even if it last the same or less, so long as it sticks well.
STeve is still loving his Avons it seems. They looked to have a flatter profile than the stockers though if I remember right, The Z6 (off the rim) look pretty steep and rounded. I’ll have to look at CONSTOC.
Are the wear bars in the grooves aligned with the elephants? I'll go look in a bit.
Bones
08-26-2005, 02:40 PM
Maybe I'm hijacking the tread, but I need to pipe in. You guys are getting more mileage out of tires that I did.
My stock BT020's got replaced not long after 8,000. The rear was bad...it freaked me out when I first took the rim off the bike. No cord showing through or anything like that, but it was the most worn tire I'd ever ridden on. The front wasn't as bad but it was into the wear bars and substantially cupped.
I put Z6's on next. Better handling but they didn't last as long. The rear had a bad flat spot by 6,000 miles. That surprised me since I rarely slab it. I'm also anal about tire pressure. The Z6 rear is slick on center to begin with, and the flat spot meant it didn't have the greatest traction in the wet. Call me a safety nut, but this tire was done at 6K. The front could have gone another couple thousand, but about that time I got my "free" set of Michelin Pilot Roads so I decided to start fresh front and rear.
I like the Pilot Roads so far...about 2,000 miles to date. Good stick, nice linear turn-in, best rain tire of the three I've used. They're a bit noisy, maybe due to the tread design...front and rear there's no rolling circumference that is slick, so there's always slick / tread / slick / tread / slick / tread contact happening with the road.
You all can scope out my current ST sneakers at ConSTOC.

Wish I could join you.
I took a look at the Z6. Maybe I have an early one or something because, though I finally found them, they are only placed in ONE location across the rear tire. They are lower than the Stones ones also, so harder to find. They aren't related to the elephants (which look like something interesting to rub off, or maybe work at keeping there, sooner or later).
The front tire has the wear indicators in more than one spot unlike the rear. Bones, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. These 10,000mi. guys around here had me wondering if maybe one of my wheels was put on sideways or something. I'll be looking at your freebies for certain as I've considered them.

Unfortunately ALL kinds of things going on with the Mrs so she may not be able to join us for any rides..
She has work, kids got soccer on Friday eve and Sat morning..ugg..
Here it is again from the original post...
Once we get down from Castle Craig..(15 minute ride to Lunch stop)
691 which becomes rte 66..
1. Turn Right on Rt 147 (South I think)..
Lunch at Lloyds in Middlefield (American casual with an outdoor deck for eating) - (if everyone is Ok with this)
Once we get underway after lunch..Next stop Gillettes Castle approx 40 mintues
2. Turn Right onto Powder Hill Road - (Ride by a ski area..Great valley views..enter into a huge orchard)
3. Left onto South Street - all orchard land..Beautiful
4. Right onto 157 (South I think)
5. Left onto Rt 68
6. Right onto Rt 17
7. Left onto Higganum Road - This begins a fun and pretty New England countryside road
8. Becomes Candlewood Hill Road
12. Candlewood Hill Road becomes Rt 154 which Parallels Rt 9 and the CT River. Again very nice NewEngland style scenery without the slab.
13. Left onto Rt 82 - cross CT river here and come out at Goodspeed Opera House - No need for Ferry.
14. Right onto River Road and access to Gillette's Castle State Park
Next Leg Gillette's Castle to Waters Edge Campground --approx 45 minutes
15. Head out from Gillette's Castle on Rt 148
16. Turn Right back onto Rt 82 (aka Norwich-Salem Rd)
17. Left onto Hopyard Road and into Devil's Hopyard State park - Now this is a fun roller coaster ride for MCs..Up and down and in and out and it will make you giggle...
10 min STOP AT CHAPMAN FALLS for Photo ops
18. Right onto Haywardville Rd
19. Left onto Lake Shore Drive becomes Lake Hayward Road
20. Left on Cabin Road
21. Right on Rt 16
22. Left on Rt207
23. Right on Leonard Bridge Road
24. 1/4 mile Left into Watersedge Campground.
Once again..here is the link to the Campground:

Here is the portion of the ride I will lead. There is a photo op at a scenic spot on the Shepaug River that appears to have been created for parallel parking ST's. After much thought I've decided that doubling back over my favorite two roads is the only way to really appreciate them. One of the roads has two distinct feels depending on which way it is take. One way it feels like a rollercoaster ride and the way other it feels like a motocross track. It is paved :D . The other road is just plain worth riding twice, it's that pretty.

Oh man you went and changed it on me John, after I already emailed it to STeve too. It sounds like it will be well worth it though from your description.
It looks like the upper left loop is the only change, is that right?
Do you turn around where Old Park Lane Rd. meets Park Lane E., or do you turn around where Park Lane E. meets 202???
Being good at spotting U turns, it looks like Bradbury road would make an easy to do U turn for the bunch of us as it is already a circle when combined with Park Lane E.
[Edit] Oops I just got the email with the ST&Trips file in it, I see what you did now. :)

I'm looking at the route map for the first time (busy month of work...good problem to have). Wow, there are a lot of turns for 75 miles. Do we dare risk pulling Carl off the point? He has demonstrated such competence in leading group U-turns. Think I'll ride mid-pack.

Mid pack sounds like a good place I will be right behind you Bones. :03biker:
I gotta lead in NH... wouldn't mind taking sweep in one of the CT groups.

Pay no attention to the map at the u-turn portion. We will actually turn around in a bank parking lot at the intersection of rt202 to assess the rollercoaster portion of the road. This part will actually be taken at a slower speed (speed limit or slightly less) due to the technical difficulty of some serious down hill, decreasing radius off camber turns. Going back is easier and hopefully a little faster since the turns become uphill, increasing radius that are banked in our favor. Except for one uphill, decreasing radius that is generously banked and somewhat forgiving (ask Eddy1999purple :D ). Stay light on your seat there are a lot of sudden uphills and downhills. At the parking lot anyone who would like to challenge this road at a higher speed can try it on his own. Going west to east at speed is exhilerating. Going east to west at speed is down right frightening.
Oh, BTW the scenery is very pretty. I've ridden this road many times and I've actually seen it a few times. If we get stuck behind a slow mover, you'll appreciate it since passing is out of the question. Our speed will depend on the size of the group that shows up unless someone (Todd??) offers to drop by ahead of time and learn the road. It is definitely better if we break up into two smaller groups. It is a sweet road but needs to be treated with respect. As always the important thing is to stay in your personal comfort zone and remember it is not a race. When Ed and I took this route we got stuck behind a car that was moving at a good clip. When we arrived at Washington Depot I had to stop I was laughing so hard, what a hoot!!

At this point, I have the trip starting from exit 11. If everyone wants to meet at the diner, then we head down Church Hill Rd (816) over I84 and take a left at point #3 and and begin the ride from there.

Ok......since we're gettin so close let me just relay to all youz guyz what all the costs will be, just so there's no surprises. Each tent will cost $10/night. The Annual Cookout is $7.00 per person. Then there's any other food, supplies, beer, gas, etc. that you might need to buy. Breakfast on Sunday Morning is $4.00 each. That's about it I guess. I just didn't want anyone being surprised with any of this when they arrive. This is gonna be a great time. Depending on the weather, the pool will be available, so if you want to use it bring your swim suits.........NO SKINNY-DIPPING (Unless your cute) :D .
Oh and the showers are on coin operated meters. A shower will cost you .25 cents. If anyone wants to bring your laptops, we have a free hotspot in the area where we're camping so feel free to stuff it in the bags somewhere. On motorcycles we go around the security gate so you won't need a gate card, but if anyone brings a cage and wants a gate card there is a $10 deposit for the card that you get back when you return the card at check-out.
I hope I have not scared anyone off with all this. We're gonna have a great time with this.

Here is a cut and paste of Todd’s last list of people declaring intentions to do Friday’s ride.

Paul from NH and I are there for sure... have yet to hear back from Paul in VT, probably practicing U turns in a DQ parking lot somewhere on his new bego. :p:

Are you gonna make the Friday ride in with us???
Logistically, how do you want everyone to 'check in'..Could it be as a group or like normal, just stop, park at the registration area...everyone goes in to store..pays their tab and then onto the campsights??

I'm gonna give you a solid "maybe" on the Friday ride. I hope so. If it turns out to be anything like today.....it would have been a great day to take off. Been a slow work day.
As far as check-in....When the group gets here, well go right up to the Safari Area and I'll have everyone "check-in" with me up there. If anyone comes in on their own, or not with the main group ride-in that Todd and John are leading, You'll have to stop at the main office on your way in and let them know that your with the ST-owners group. They will give you directions up to the Safari Area and you can come there and check-in with me.
This will keep the office clear of all us biker dudes as it gets to be pretty hectic in there on check-in day.

Well, it’s about 2:15 AM and I’ve got the oil changed (trying the Mobile-1 gold cap 15-50 this time out) and 2 Metzler Z6s mounted for CONSTOC. I got the Powerlet on and an adapter also, so I can blow up the air mattress.
I was really hoping (and had planned) to finish the stock B-Stones out at CONSTOC, but man they went fast when it got within 1/32 of the wear bars. Within 300 or 400 miles they ate down in to the wear bars. All I could get out of them was 5,060 miles. This is only half of what some are getting out of the stock tires. The front probably had 6 to 8 hundred miles left, but that is all. They were also cracked down inside the treads. I’ll have to get good at this wheel removal business at this rate. There must be some aggressive blacktop around here.
The Z6s seem to have a steep rounded profile a lot like the B-Stones. The back appears as if it may be a bit steeper than the back STone also. I’m really curious to see how they feel. I’ll run them in for a few hundred and then push a bit and see what they seem like.
I don’t know if it was a stupid move or not, but I decided to try the dyna beads for balancing rather than weights. I’m sure as hell keeping my fingers crossed on that one.
Oh yeah STeve, I read a post where Avon downgraded the tires and do NOT recommend them for the ST anymore. However their website still list them for the ST, so maybe it’s BS.
Hey Greg, burn up those OEMs of yours that you dislike so much anyway, so you can try the Z6s also. :D
