OK.....The shirts are ready for orders. I used Joe's Idea for getting shirtznthingz to do em for me. It takes ME out of the middle and for $12.95 it's a great price. Here's the details.

http://store.yahoo.com/shirtznthingz/constoc.html

The "Water's Edge" logo and your name will be smaller on the front left breast of the shirt and the ConSTOC drawing will be large on the back.

Carl....e-mail me with your shirt sizes and mailing address and I'll get yours to you. Thanks for the drawing.

Guys and Gals..Brothers and Sisters..

You've got to go. We'll have a great time..Once I get my bike I am going to attempt some type of camera mount (DVD camcorder) and maybe can get you guys copies of our rides and additional 'activities' from the weekend. Heck let's make it an annual.

In any case Brian's Campground is great and I only throw rocks at cars (woops sorry Brian :p: ) I have been a seasonal there for 6 years. If we have a smaller group I can host the fires at my site so it is only our group. Whatever, Its a beautiful part of the state and there are tons of great rides, and attractions to be had out here.

and..all right, I'll play along..just hope you guys can keep up with the Red bikes.... :biker: but don;t worry, we'll wait for you if need be.

We can keep up with the red bikes, but only if we give them a real good head start. :D :D :D
It is in a really beautiful area of the state with easy access to Mass, NH, VT (OK, not so easy to VT) and RI.

OK...here's the scoop. I have put a hold on 7 sites in the Safari Field for the week-end of Sept. 16th-18. I can rent them at $20/night/site and because we will all be in tents we can actually fit 2 tents/site which would cut down on the cost to $10/night/tent. If anyone wants to bring along their significant other, please do.

On that week-end we will be holding our Annual Cook-out which includes Hot-dogs, hamburgers, Corn-on-the-cob, misc. salads. Adults $7.00. Also there will be a DJ following the cook-out on Saturday night. Then we will be having our Sunday Breakfast at the rec-hall which includes pancakes(reg or Blueberry) & Sausage or Keibasa, coffee and juice....or 2 eggs(any style), toast, sausage or keibasa, coffee, and juice.......all for $4.00.

Yesterday I put 100 miles on scopin' out some good roads for yuz guys. I try to give it a good mix of roads.

Ok, I took another 65 mile ride for you guys to scope out some more useful roads for our rides at ConSTOC. I've heard many good comments and read many great reviews for a restaurant in Pomfret called "The Vanilla Bean" so I decided to go see about finding some good roads out that way. Man, there are some great roads out that way so I think I'll plan our Saturday ride so that we get to "the Bean" at about lunch time. Here's a link to their website.

My plan is to try to get out and test ride this ride as our Saturday ride at ConSTOC. I've attached a scanned in map and I'll also give you guys the MS Streets and Trips 2005 file in case you want to download it to see the exact route. If anyone has any reason to not use any part of this route, please let me know so I'm not wasting my time riding it for some reason. Otherwise, I'm planning to try it out on Sunday 6/5/05. It is a total of 4 hours ride time and 122 miles with stop number 12 being The Vanilla Bean Restaurant for lunch. It's almost exactly 2 hours before lunch and 2 hours after lunch. So we should be back at the campground for about 3:00 or 4:00 which works well for me because then I have to cook at our annual cook-out. Stops 1 and 24 are the campground. 1 is the start and 24 is the finish.

Here's the MS Streets and Trips file:

Brian,
Maybe Michele and I will do the ride with you on Sunday. What time would you head out?

I was on 320 on Friday and I was think that was a nice road for CONSTOC..

Anything in mind for Sunday morning or will people be generally heading back?
Also, depending on what time everyone gets there we could do a Friday evening run...

I have a pretty good rip home Sunday, but, would be up for an early morning ride/lunch/then head home if anyone is interested (if the weather cooperates).

georgeorge
05-31-2005, 04:11 PM
Sure...we could even do a ride up towards NH on Sunday if everyones up for it.

Todd on Sunday 6/5/05, I'll prolly leave here at around 1:00 to make the loop if you and Michelle wanna go. That would get us back here at the campground at about 4:00 or 5:00. Maybe we could stop at the Bean for a quick cup-o-joe and then get on with the ride home. I can't leave earlier because I am the egg-man (coo-coo-cachoo) until 11:30 then I have to pump-out the rentals and fill their propane tank. Should free me up at about 12:30-1:00.

I've made 2 changes to the saturday ride so that:

1) I could include route 138 from 207 out to rt12. I rode 138 last night....What a ride!
2) I could include a stop in Manchester at Cycle Gear. If anyone wants to see stuff they carry it's at www.cyclegear.com.

The route is now 5 hours and 2 minutes long, but that includes an hour at the Vanilla Bean for lunch, so 4 hours ride time....126 miles. We will probably make better time than that, but that's what MS Streets & Trips is coming up with.

If you want to download the updated STreets and Trips file, it's HERE (http://www.taritakorten.com/misc/satride.est)

Would anyone like to get a ConSTOC t-shirt? I can arrange to get these made and we could hand em out in Sept. I'm not sure of the cost yet, But I am thinking that it would be between $15-$20. I'm thinking of putting the small pocket sized "Water's Edge Campground" logo on the front left breast and THIS (http://www.taritakorten.com/misc/shirt.pdf) large on the back. Let me know if there is any interest in this and if there is I'll begin working on gettin' er done! At least I could get prices first then I'll let you guys know the price before I start. Also if anyone thinks I should change something about the idea for the back, nows the time to let me know that too.

I don't need sizes or counts yet, I just need to know if there's any interest.

Yeah..I was thinkin the same thing. The problem is that I can only find photos of the ST1300 and not a drawing. The only drawing I've come up with is the one on Chris Parker's ST1300 Parking Only Sign. Here (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3267&highlight=st1300+parking+signs)

Some guys swear by cooking over an open fire. Perhaps Kempo is in that group. Perhaps he cuts firewood with his bare hands, too...could be a handy guy to have around a campsite!

When I camp, typically I eat dinner at nice restaurants (payback for sleeping in a tent) then enjoy the open fire as a "Caveman TV."
:cf1:

What do you all plan to do for ConSTOC?

Kempo-STer
06-13-2005, 01:02 PM
I got into cooking on an open fire last year and am thinking to do this for the gang on Friday evening when everyone gets in...
Beverages will also be on me..(Especially after I spill it :D )
I'll get a list of preference as we get closer..

I will host the campfires at my site as you will be all situated right in front of my camper..Incidentally showers and bathrooms are right next to you as well.

We really don't rough it in these campers..Has everything the house...even central air which my house does not!

Saturday the campground has a cookout as Brian indicated..

You guys are going to have a great time! Now lets pray the weather is good.

Brian,
I've got a 3rd I just put together that I'll email you as a .pdf. I like it better than the others myself as personally I like a bigger bike. You can post it also for everyone to look at as a .pdf. I had the advantage of transparency in the original file to make the bike big enough to show up overlaying it on one of the .pdf files you posted.

I'll attach a smaller .jpg here for a sneak preview. Hope you don't mind.

Well...I never did get out to test ride the Saturday ride on Sunday 6/5, so I decided to go out any test ride half of it tonight after work. I left at about 6:15 and hightailed it out route 6 and up 97 to get to the Vanilla Bean and start from there to do the second half. I got home at about 9:00, but I did stop at Roy Rogers for dinner (The Bean was closed). What a great ride. Now one of these days I'll get out and test ride the first half. Oh..the work I'm doin' for you guys......at least that's what I'm tellin' my wife! The new XM radio works well, but in areas where there is heavy tree cover, I was getting some dropped signals. Sounds like music in a can as you loose the signal. Maybe I'll try to move the antenna to on top of the top box. Right now it's on the dash, so it needs to "look" through the windshield to see the sky. Technically it's supposed to have a clear line of sight, not through a windshield.

Hey, what about us ST1100 riders for the shirt.

I hope you'll understand and not think that I'm being a jerk but, I'm only doin' One style of shirt. I wasn't going to have a bike on it at all in the beginning so as not to offend anyone, but the other guys wanted a bike on it so that's where we're at. I don't think that Carl has drawn a drawing of an ST1100, so if I were to find one somewhere else it would surely look different and not fit in. I could be wrong......hey Carl, by any chance do you have or want to draw an ST1100 also? Don't kill me for asking.

hey Carl, by any chance do you have or want to draw an ST1100 also? Don't kill me for asking. Death to the Infidels!!! :Chair1: ;) Sorry guys, I already have to much time in messing with it. It aint perfect, but it's better'n no bike.

Deep apologies to guys on the 1100's. Maybe think of the 1300 as family, kind of like a younger sibling. The 1100’s are good bikes, but no can keep working on this stuff. I normally have to say no to doing these things at all, but just hated to see yous high and dry without anything, kind of wanted to make up for not being able to attend the whole event.

Bones mentioned getting rid of the kickstand and Brian wants the link out. I can handle that. New windshields, different bikes etc. will have to be cut from the agenda though, sorry.

Carl_T
06-15-2005, 11:42 PM
I stayed up and did this. OK I lied a little and decided to do the windshield down angle and kickstand up Bones requested.

I initially nixed the windsheild moving, but decided to mess with it after all. I had no reference with the windshield down so I put it down at what looked to me like a visually nice angle. Even though it is most likely off some I think it carries as a decent enough representation of the bike anyway.

If any of you can't stand the windsheild in this exact position time to say so is now. I'll attach a picture of what it looks like at this point.

I don't think time will allow me to ride to CONSTOC via White River Jct., although it's only 200km longer than the more direct route, the reduced speed zones I would encounter would probably add 3or 4 hours to my ride, I can't leave until Friday morning if I come, so in order for me to get there by early evening I'd have to take the superslab, about 800km.

Guys! if Brian can find a spot for us Dawn and I just got a time windfall where we can work it out so we can make this after all!

My daughter would like to know, if she drives the camping gear down in a car, is there anyone used to riding 2 up that would take her out on our rides on their bike???

The only things I ask is that anyone offering has two up experience and is comfortable riding their bike double. Also that they follow through if they say yes, and don't leave her sitting at the campsite alone.

Anyone willing?

She's 27 and I've taken her a number of times without any problems.

If no one wants to do this, she'll need to sit it out home, and Dawn will drive the car down instead.

Carl,

Have ridden w/pillion many many miles... but not since I got rid of the ST11 in fall of 2K. I had 4 years off, then got :04biker: last Sept, this weekend will only be the second time I've been 2 up with Judi since getting this bike (she's not big on something happening to both of us now that there is a little one on the scene). I've gotten used to riding with the same person for many years... the time off, new bike, and new body behind me might be a little uncomfortable... let's talk again in Aug. if you don't get any other offers.

If it ends up just being you and Dawn, ship the gear and leave the cage behind... won't cost much more than the extra gas to take the car. UPS & FedX ground are both pretty cheap for lighter stuff - tent and bags. OR, use it as an excuse to get a Givi :D

Since Heather asked, I was wondering if any of the guys had a bunch of 2up time in on the 1300 itself, AND didn't mind double up riding.

Heather has not had a lot of pillion time in (though she has always been steady when I have ridden her) and I'd sooner have the combo be a rider with a good bit of 1300 specific two up time due to that.

I'll be riding Heather up to Lake George this year and other short rides, so it isn't as though she won't have any bike traveling fun if she can't come along, it's all good. Thanks for the offer anyway Greg, I do appreciate it.

John, Exit 11 sounds right to me.

Perhaps hold off on that tent yet. I think I have a little one tucked away though it hadn't been used in years so I have to look at it.

Also I suppose I just have to step up to the plate and look for reasonably priced sleeping bags that roll up tiny and small. That is the main problem since our present bags are cheapo-s that roll up huge. Also I was wondering if a good size backpack could be purchased and strapped on the rack behind the backrest. I know Honda has some tiny 10lb limit on that, but I'm sure it is strong enough to hold bags and tent at least.

The main problem comes in with adding clothing for two, plus rain gear, plus some warm liners for weather change to the camping gear. A bike holds this stuff WAY easier for one. The budget is out this year for clothing that doubles as rain gear, though I'll have to look at that also.

I'll have to check this stuff out. I can't believe more $$$, though if we get the bags etc., we'll likely use it.

Anyone know of any $50 bags that roll up to 6 or 7 inches thick by 12 inches..

A bunch of you guys bring gear on your bikes. Any ideas for carrying with a passenger? Any recommendations on space saving stuff, or essentials? It's been about 3 years since we've camped and never did on a bike. Heck I'm one of those sloppy packers that either brought the truck along with the SUV, or clipped a trailer on the back so I had 3 tents, (2 big ones one little) and about everything I could imagine I'd want for the week+. I'm not used to this space saving deal AT ALL. :D

Carl,
what you need are compression bags... you stuff the sleeping bag into it, then crank her down. These are great for compact mobility, but leave the bags in them only long enough to make the journey, meaning don't store them that way, or you sleeping bags will lose their loft/insulation value. My 40 degre bags crank down to about the size of an average honeydew mellon, my 20 degree bags about a basketball or a little less... don't use them on our sub-zero down bags... feather no like comp bags

You could probably stuff 2 mid weight bags into one... think I have done that... as far as cost goes... not sure, will have to look around... I have typicaly bought a little pricier stuff 'cause it used to do a lot of miles on my back... it's amazing how heavy a 40# pack could have been for $1K less!

Let's talk about Heather again when we get closer - some of the variables may have changed, or may not.

Helen Two Wheels Stuff (see link) is great and the do it yourself straps work great with the ST rack. I made a set of the straps with limited talent using a sewing machine. I'm bringing the Extra tent, it has only been used once. Neither of my tents has been used much and surely both need a workout. Walmart has a fleece sleeping bag for warm weather (actually a fleece blanket with a zipper ~$15) combine them with a warm extra blanket over the top of the two of you and you have a great system that packs well. BTW Walmart also has a self inflating air mattress for old bones (yours and mine not from Mass) ~$30.

Carl, many sleeping bags like what you're after here:

Only draw back to the reasonably priced stuff is weight & bulk... you'll have to drill down on these a bit to see how they fit your needs.

Ed: Camping on two wheels rules. Typically I bring:

tent
ground cover (cut to slightly smaller that footprint of tent)
sleeping bag (I put mine inside a plastic trash bag before it goes in the stuff sack…keeps it dry in case of rain on the ride, provides a refuse bag at camp)
Go-Kot (or air mattress or something so you don’t have to sleep right on the ground)
pillow (airline size…no, I didn’t steal it!)
minimal toilet kit (how good do you really need to look for motorcycle buddies?)
in-tent ear plugs (trust me, your buddies snore)
fleece jacket and lightweight shoes (you don’t want to wear your riding jacket and boots around camp)
fleece hat (keeps you warm at night)
fold-up camp chair ($6 at Mart of Wal…way better than a picnic bench)
towel
water bottle
tent bottle (for answering the call of nature in the middle of the night…empty Gatorade works great...do not confuse with #12!)
fire starter (no campfire, very bad)
head lamp (easier than a flashlight for setting up camp after dark or looking around in your tent)
snacks (grain bars, trail mix, etc.)
travel mug (a dozen uses)
some light rope (a thousand uses)
rubber snake or spider (optional but recommended)
There's less here than you think. It all fits (except sleeping bag) easily in a Baja Bag. I use lashing straps (not bungies) to secure it to the back seat. Practice packing a couple times…don’t want to be the last one ready to ride!

Good info. guys.

STeve,
I'm sorry, things got so damn hectic here getting ready for the show that I absent mindedly forgot you wanted to know when it was. The reception was Thursday night and went well. I wish I'd sent you the invitation. A weeknight is tough to travel that much for though anyway.

The show continues on until July 8th, though the Gallery is only open 9am to 4pm weekdays and closed weekends (nuts I know, but I guess they cater to the local crowd that does business in the City). The info. is on the homepage of my site.

I'm glad your show is going and hope good fortune shines on its entire run, Carl.

We'll be meeting at the Commuter Parking Lot just off exit 11 on I84 (Sandy Hook, rt34 exit). Time is flexible. I guess Steve will determine that depending on his arrival. From there we can slab it, approximately 1 1/2 hours depending on traffic and construction. Or we can take a scenic route which includes Hadlyme Ferry crossing ($2.25 vehicle and driver plus .75 for passengers. Can Dawn swim? :D ) and some dramatic views of Gillette Castle on the CT River. Note: I still have to scout the route, though on M/S S&T's it looks good.

2. extra set of batteries for flashlight/headlamp
3. For cooler weather: extra gloves and warm socks (for around camp)
4. For warmer weather: small container of bug spray (unless you know there won't be bugs)

Optional:

1. flip-flops (or something to wear in the shower, unless your lightweight shoes can double for this)
2. Washcloth (if you like to use one)
3. Something to wear for sleeping only, especially if you'll be wearing your riding clothes more than once
4. something to read (don't forget the extra headlamp batteries)

We do have them in NY. If the water gets a bit scarce in the summer they make their way down to the Cities and towns from time to time. I saw a large shiny beauty cross the road in front of my truck a few years back. It was large and all muscle, much different from game farm bears.

We have a den a mile or so behind our house. A large male started coming around to our lawn eating chestnuts or something under the oak. In fear of my tiny dogs lives (who think they are great danes or larger and would get themselves killed for sure) I called around. No help from any authorities was forthcoming. The Bear was arrogant and not afraid of me and my waving arms, so from cover I stung it in the *** with an air rifle properly charged so as not to break skin, but enough to definitely hurt. It was heavily pissed, but left and not returned since. I've encountered them in the woods once when I was 16 and luckily it ran the other way startled. I've since put up a fence around the property for the dogs.

They are an animal you don't want to tangle with.

I have them on my front deck regularly... only way to get them to go and not just circle around and come right back is to :rocket1: their :butt1: with a round of light load field shot... black bears have VERY tuff hydes, just scares the crap out of them. My experience having grown up with them in the Dacks, and living most of my life on their turf is that pissing them off is bad... if your going to interact you're generally better off showing them you mean business, like the old punch them in the nose theory - yes, it works. Tried kicking one in the :butt1: as he went bailing down the steps at the end of the deck once (I wasn't very awake...), he boogied big time... was back on the deck by the time I got out of the shower. Phase II, bird shot, worked like a charm. You can also get rubber slugs for shotguns but I have yet to find any.

Had a familiar one behind the shop two nights ago, when we made eye contact he split... usually the case. There have been some odd / uncharacteristic black bear events around here in the past few years, showing more predatory behavior towards humans... ex: two adult males together (odd) devoured a female hiker (very odd) a couple of summers ago. The bears were killed, the womans remains, shoes, etc. were found in their bellies, and DNA testing revealed that the two bears weren't even kin (very, very odd).

I love bears, very cool critters indeed... but when they position themselves one step from entering my house, lines get drawn.

Sorry about the :th1:

:)

My Maxi wouldn't even qualify as a bear snack he's so little. I even keep an eye out for the local hawk when he's out playing.

Around here hunting has slumped a great deal compared to 20 or 30 years ago, and animals are a bit less afraid of humans than previously. I sure wouldn't want them comforatble on my deck.

reminds me of the ending segment of some skateboarder movie I saw back in college... kid took a dare to do 3 pretty radical things:

first shot himself in the face w/ mace... the laughter begins...

then had a "friend" who obviously had something against him light him up with a tazer, a lot, flipping around on the ground screaming stop, AAAAAAA STOP!... now on the floor close to pissing myself...

then, the genius put on a flack jacket with an extra plate of steel behind it, and turned a 357 on himself at point blank... he left the frame of the camera, the gun just dropped straight down... now crying in laughter on the floor out of control, funnyST thing I have ever seen/heard... the audio was great, the howles of pain throughout this segment made it... wonder where that dude is today?

We have to have something to do if it rains cats and dogs, right? I'll see if I can find some of those slugs ;)

They unloaded their stuff, said "Thanks, dear," and set up camp. For crying out loud, how hard can it be to load a tent, cot, sleeping bag, and campsite miscellaneous onto "the world's premier adventure tourer"? I know this is a bit early but in case John may be coming by the campground for a visit this weekend, Do NOT go under the gate. The gate has a sensor and lifts up for cars automatically. Problem on a motorcycle is it does not 'see' the end of the bike and shuts just as soon as you start through.
I learned this the hard way last year on my Virago. I looked up and the gate was at my Helmet still coming down! I proceeded to do the limbo on the bike. There is space to the right for the motorcycle to go through once you register. If I ride in with some of you on that Friday, it won't be a problem.

Steve, we're waiting for Carl to tell us about Dawn's schedule for that Friday. Ideal time for a meet up would around 9 or 10 AM. Whatever your plans, I will adjust mine to yours whenever you firm them up.

While you're at Gillette's Castle, continue on rt82 and make sure you include a run through Devil's Hopyard State Park right around the corner. (Also a great place for a picnic with a little more picnic room than GC). The road through there is like a roller coaster; you can't really go that fast since it is narrow and twisty but the up and down changes of the road makes it really fun.

John...on the corner of 82 and 154, just before you cross the drawbridge over to the Goodspeed Opera house, there's a general store there that makes a mean sandwich. You might wanna stop there for your food. It's only about 10 minutes before your gonna get to Gillette Castle or Devil's Hopyard. I'm not sure when you get to that intersection which way you'll be coming from, but if your taking a right (which I think you probably will do) the store will be on the right just before the intersection.

I can likely meet up with STeve somewhere before Exit 11. I'm ordering a Eureka Tent that will take a queen mattress and fold to 7x18 inches. Everything else that size folds a lot bigger. It looks like we may get enough gear aboard for the two of us after all. I had no idea sleeping bags could be had that rolled and cinched as small as they do. You don't want to have to move in them though, mummy sacks.

Well, the picnic idea gets better and better. Hope you can make it, Brian. The Castle or the Hopyard would be a terrific place to get things started.
Todd if you'd like, meet us at exit 11. It's less than an hour away from Hartford.
We still have to set a time for meeting.
Right now we have:
Carl and Dawn (hopefully)
Steve
Ed (1999purple)
Maybe Bones (Come on guy, short ride down rt8)
Oh yeah and me. :D
Anyone else going my way, from western CT?

Sounds good. Depending on the route inward we can include a bathroom break at my house in Meriden before heading back out. Just a suggestion thrown out to the group if you wish. (Also have a hot tub :D )

Finally got this picture posting thing working (yes I am in IT..scarry is in it?)
Hopefully my avatar appears..

I will push up a few pics of myself and recent travels so everyone can see my ugly mug..

Took the pre-ride to Water's Edge CG today and spent some time with Brian and Todd. I had a great time, thanks guys. Beautiful campground Brian, ConSTOC will be fun. Todd offered to lead the ride from exit 11 and suggested a stop at Hubbard Park (Castle Craig). This looks real good to me, I've seen the Castle Craig from below and wondered what was up there (see link below for some pics). From there we can visit Gillette Castle SP (took some pics today) and The Devil's Hopyard before heading to the campground. Know a good place for lunch Todd? :chef2:

John again great meeting you and erally looking forward to the NH trip..

Gang,
As far as the Castle Craig thing..the stop is right off the highway (RT691 exit 4) and a real fun ride to the top (twisty and turny) with some really good views and photo ops..
The entire stop there would take 20 minutes or so..depending on how long the stay at the top is. Many people travel 691 (connects I84 and I91) and often look up at Castle Craig and wonder how to get up there..

Incidently it really is not a Castle (unlike Gilette's Castle) but a lookout tower.

I need to know who will be on the ride in (not right away)?
I'll lead the first leg of the ride. We can keep it short or I can take you on a slightly longer ride that will have you grinning from ear to ear (ask Ed).
Todd will lead the rest. Castle Craig for sure, Gillette Castle and Devil's Hopyard probable. Lunch will probably be in Meriden, Todd's call.
We can discuss the Sunday ride back around the campfire.
One more thing, who brings the candy?

Sounds right to us John. What is near exit 11 on the map, so I can plug the route there into streets and trips and get a general traveling time estimate from our place to Exit 11?

Never mind John, I see Sandy Hook is there, though Streets and trips wouldn't bring it up on a search. It's telling me about an hour and a half, we'll stop somewhere for ten minutes to stretch on the way, so 10am is very doable for us.

The "Water's Edge" logo and your name will be smaller on the front left breast of the shirt and the ConSTOC drawing will be large on the back.

Exit 11... where all is happy and good in the world. Route 84 Park and ride lot. 10Am, the glorious whine of the ST, John and Todd’s roads, Ferry rides, lunches chowed down in a State Park, Castles, and Campgrounds in the end. Make it if you feel up to it and can roll out of bed that early. Just fill that camel hump with go juice (not to much though or you’ll be shaking like my little Max from the caffeine). :D You are an early rising, far riding maniac (along with many others coming it seems) :bow1:

Where in the 'North East' are you coming from. Maybe we can link up on the way West down to exit 11.

Date is Sept 16th

Carl..
Not sure how to use Streets and Trips file. (someone needs to educate me)
As far as our departure from the Exit 11 meeting place..
We go east on 84 to Exit 27 (RT691) and then take exit 4 West Main Street.
Turn Right off exit and entrance to Hubbard Park and Castle Craig access road are 1/4 mile on left.
Approx time from exit 11 to first stop is 35 - 45 minutes (my guess)
Approx 34 miles..

I'll get an official planned route out next week...

Hey Gang...
Steve..Adult beverages = good. No problem and will glad to escort you once we get settled in on Friday :D

Eddie..Let me know your intended route down..I plan on leaving around 9ish so will be glad to rendez-vouz..(I'm thinking you are going to eventually be doing 91s to 691 to 84) 691 is my first road once I jump on the highway...

Planned out and rode a route from Meriden to the campground on Friday..(It was fantastic fun)
Here is it and hopefully John you can do that Magic Map do-hickey thing with it..
Once we get down from Castle Craig..(15 minute ride to Lunch stop)
691 which becomes rte 66..
1. Turn Right on Rt 147 (South I think)..
Lunch at Lloyds in Middlefield (American casual with an outdoor deck for eating) - (if everyone is Ok with this)

Once we get underway..Next stop Gillettes Castle approx 40 mintues
2. Turn Right onto Powder Hill Road - (Ride by a ski area..Great valley views..enter into a huge orchard)
3. Left onto South Street - all orchard land..Beautiful
4. Right onto 157 (South I think)
5. Left onto Rt 68
6. Left onto Rt 17
7. Quick Right onto Maiden Lane - This begins some fun and unusual road patterns with very pretty New England countryside
8. Bear Right on Johnson Ln
9. Right on Haddam Quarter Road
10. Right on Foot Hills Road
11. Left onto Candlewood Hill Road
12. Candlewood Hill Road turns into Rt 154 which Parallels Rt 9 and the CT River. Again very nice NewEngland style scenery without the slab.
13. Left onto Rt 82 - cross CT river here and come out at Goodspeed Opera House - No need for Ferry.
14. Right onto River Road and access to Gillette's Castle State Park

Next Leg Gillette's Castle to Waters Esge Campground --approx 45 minutes
15. Head out from Gillette's Castle on Rt 148
16. Turn Right back onto Rt 82 (aka Norwich-Salem Rd)
17. Left onto Hopyard Road and into Devil's Hopyard State park - Now this is a fun roller coaster ride for MCs..Up and down and in and out and it will make you giggle...
18. Right onto Haywardville Rd
19. Left onto Lake Shore Drive becomes Lake Hayward Road
20. Left on Cabin Road
21. Right on Rt 16
22. Left on Rt207
23. Right on Leonard Bridge Road
24. 1/4 mile Left into Watersedge Campground.

Let me know what the colective thoughts are..No slab.. a lot of fun and beautiful roads..

Carl, you get commissioned by this gang to make an Oil painting of the ST and I'm buying.. Heh, just noticed this Todd. Now that would be a fun painting, but it would end up one of your more expensive farkles, $3,500.oo and up, the more expensive ones representing up to few months worth of difficult work.

However, an original is not something everyone can have, and it also delivers plenty of joy to the people who can appreciate them, along with their family and friends.

If the number of Art collecting riders on ST's went up towards 250 to 500, prints would be viable. I doubt that's the case though.

Of course if you're serious just private message me, if you're kidding thanks for thinking of it. :)

For what it's worth, Steve, your top case makes a very acceptable cooler. Mine has served that purpose. The best bike for that, however, is the PC800 Pacific Coast...I'll tell you that story around the campfire.

P.S. The ST is also a perfectly good firewood hauler...pack a couple lashing straps and load up that canvas bag o' wood!

I'm going to have to go hunting for a store to find beer in the evening, as there's no room for a cooler with both of us. Glad to not be doing this on a Sunday evening, if I remember right I was working on a BB in CT and staying over. I tried to buy my helper an me a sixpack Sunday night in a market and they told me they had blue laws against selling beer Sundays. I think that was around Bridgeport and many years ago.

I can get as many as we need..Hey this a campground where all we do is drink, eat and burn stuff.. :beer3: :beer2: :cf1: :eat2:
No worries about coolers..The campground store sells ice.

As far as getting supplied..
I'll have a few available when we first get in. Nothing like a cold beer after some good riding.
We can make a run once we are settled in on Friday..I'll take the wife's car or have her follow us and we'll take the bikes :D . That can serve as the pack mule.

The laws in CT as still rediculous..Closing time is 8pm which has been recently updated to 9pm at the store owners discretion..
Also, no one is allowed open on Sunday..

Todd,
I'd be happy to look at her Art.

We'll be testing out the camping gear and how to load it for two, next weekend with family. Wife and I will take the ST. (wish I could fit my captain chairs and any kind of lounger in the sidebags)

You guys are having way too much fun of this board! :)

After reading all the posts, I figured I had to try and make this event. So I checked my calendar and scheduled a few days vacation.

I'm coming from western Pennsylvania, and will eventually end up on I84.

Any chance I can join the group meeting at exit 11?

And to you experts... how many cans of beer can I get in my Givi 52L top box (including ice)?

Thanks,

Bruce Manecke

depends on how fast you drink... faster consumtion, means less ice, means more beer :D

I've been outta this loop on the exit 11 thing... what time? I'm a solid 3 hours of slab to Hartford, wasn't planning on bailing out of work 'til 1ish, maybe a bit later...

Welcome to the asylum, it's going to be a great weekend :D . I'll be at exit 11 to greet you at 10:00. No drinking before the ride, you will need to be stone cold sober since we'll be navigating some tricky roads early on.
At Water's Edge, we can float the keg in the middle of the pond. If you want to fill up, a swim to the keg will be necessary and youll have to fill everyone else's glass before filling your own.

Todd, 10 am is an early morning departure/vacation day for me... not sure I can swing that approach - I can escape 1ish without taking any time off. Have to sit on some time to move my elderly Dad up from the Gulf Coast sometime here in the near future... will have to see how that works out. Hope we can hook up Sunday, not sure if Judi can make it or not.

Bruce the I 84 exit 11 meet time is at 10AM Friday morning, If you can't make it that early you can always go on to the campgrounds and join in the other rides and stuff for the rest of the weekend, welcome aboard.

I would like to back John up here, please keep the beers for kicking back after the rides. There are a lot of us attending and what makes these rides fun is our doing them with full abilities, enjoyably but safely for everyone. Beers taste best hanging with friends after a good day's ride anyway.

I believe that will be between Fundyrider(Pete) and Alex.. :bow1: both coming from my home province of New Brunswick. (My parents came from and all my relatives currently reside in Grand Falls, NB)

This is going to be great...
And of course we shall not partake in mind altering activities (other than riding  ) before its time..

Yes I believe we have very very important information on behalf of our fellow ST owners and for the greater good of ST's everywhere!

We must document for the Knowledge base of course all beer capacities both in bottle and cans all in the name of science and knowledge and the overall enhancement of the mighty ST...

Starring in this mission will be:
Bones... I believe by name you are the doctor of the ship...
I'll be Captain James T Kempo..(since this is my post I want to be the one to get the girls :D )
Carl will be the venerable first officer
AG Streak (aka John) will be the science officer Sulu, responsible for all mapping, routing and warp speed assessments..
Norman PCN is voted chief engineer in absentia since I can't understand any of his posts and need to read them 30 times before anything makes sense to me..(I'm not that bright)
Georgeorge is chief of security enforcing the no keg zone..(Brian gotta nominate your brother as fellow security dude since they are always the token dudes that get killed) Can't have that happen to you..

Again Very important mission here....

Thanks for the great replies, and of course, no alcoholic beverages until after the day's riding! I doubt if there will be room in the top box. But like BonesinMass said, once we get to the campground, I'm willing to volunteer the use of my top box as a beer cooler! :)

I do plan on meeting on Friday at exit 11, 10:00 A.M. Since that's about 365 miles for me, I will be leaving on Thursday, and very likely get a hotel room near the exit. That way, I'll be ready to ride at 10:00 A.M.

as fellow security dude since they are always the token dudes that get killed) Can't have that happen to you.. "Captain.....I don't understand... that is not logical!!!" No cracks about my pointy ears causing a U turn propensity (by the way Sulu has charted the most awesome of U turns at the beginning of the Exit 11 ride!)... and where is Scottie who can squeeze us another ounce of power out of the many mighty Enterprise engines in a pinch? What is a mission without hearing Scottie exclaim "I canno' do ittt Cap'n!"

We shall go forth ferretting out any hint of intelligent life in the uncharted dark corners of Connecticut, even within it's very forests, castles, waters, and curvy curves~~~ :04biker: :biker: :03biker: afterwards to measure the beer case of the enterprise.

Good plan STealers Fan, I think 1999Purple mentioned he will be gassing up and eating breakfast in the Exit 11 area, maybe you can hook up for breakfast with him.

Todd you are absolutely right. It has been my experience that the leader is never the smartest guy in the group. Of course that doesn't say much for the rest of us. And d*mn if you aren't right about who gets the girl... It's always the guy who couldn't disarm a photon torpedo to save his or his crews' lives. On the other hand he does know his way around Romulan ale and can sweet talk a Virgillian Binar out of her green tentacles :D :D .
