View Full Version : Mom's nearing the end of the road

Looks like my Mom's time is nearly run out. Lately she's been shuttling between the hospital and the convalescent home.
Talked to my sister last night and she told me her heart has a plugged valve and her liver is just not working.
Mom's 90 now and until a month ago was very active. She's still completely alert and aware. Her brain is still in top condition, but her body is wearing out.
All of this was precipitated by a fall at home that gave her a cut on the back of the head that needed stitches, but no broken bones. She has had a continual problem with fluid building up in the lungs. We don't know which caused which in this incident.
We're trying to arrange home care. Mom would like to be home and not in some impersonal place.
I have two other sisters, one of which is coming in from FL at the end of this month. Trying to contact the other one in WA.

Gonzo,
Sorry to hear about your mom. I don't care what age they are, it is always difficult when they have to go through these type of things. All we can hope for is that they are as comfortable as possible.
She (and your family) will be added to my prayer list! :pray1:

My heart goes out to you, G. My dad made it to 92, and he was mentally sharp right to the end. His body just wouldn't support him any more. He had a fall too, and that was the end of his living alone. He went to a nice nursing home (if there is such a thing) and lasted less than a year from the time he was still living on his own. He had all his faculties, and he wasn't a happy guy toward the end. That made it harder on his loved ones and caregivers. It will not be an easy time for your mom, nor for you and your family. But you just gotta get through it. You're a good son.
Sometimes I think it's easier when an elderly person loses their marbles. Less awareness of the body giving out may be a blessing.
Pop has been gone for almost six years. I still miss him every day.
Gonzo,
Sorry to hear about your Mom. I'll say a prayer.

Gonzo,
My thoughts and prayers are with you, your mother and the family. It's so hard to see your parents fail. They are the strength for us for many years. Having them fail is very hard to watch. Stay strong and be there for your mother. Make sure you get everything said that you have to say. No regrets when they are gone and always remember that you were there for them like they were there for you. We are all born terminal. Some more terminal than others. Life is fragile. It sounds like she has had a very good and long life. Make this part of her life as easy as you can. They always live on in ours hearts and memories!

Update.
Mom's been moved back home, where she's much more comfortable. Her insurance provided a hospital bed and a wheelchair, plus 24 hour care. She has oxygen if she needs it.
One of my sisters has been running things around the house for her for the past several days. Another one of my sisters is coming in from FL next week to spend a week with her.
I will be building a ramp for the front steps in the next 2 weeks.
So right now she is stable and home. The doctors say she has a plugged heart valve but she wouldn't be able to survive surgery.
All your support is very much appreciated.

Well, she is probably more comfortable at home. It is good your Sister's can pitch in to help, and you can build a ramp. I will keep her on my prayer list. Thanks for keeping us informed.
