View Full Version : Laminar Lip works for me

Posted this on another site and thought I would share.
I've been using my Laminar Lip for about a month now. It really works, pushing the air up over my helmet. I ride everywhere with the windshield rolled all the way down, all the time. There is no more pressure pushing against my back. I can feel the back pressure dropping as I lower the windshield and the air blast isn't hitting my faceshield :bow1: . It doesn't seem to work as well pushing bugs up though. Bugs hit my faceshield more frequently, so I have to clean it more often :D .- john

I would have given the LL five  's if it helped more with the helmet buffeting. Overall I think it is a very good product. Caveat: I haven't tried it in a heavy rain yet.

Some more thoughts:
I still haven't been caught in a heavy rain because it has been fairly dry up here.
- In a light rain it appears to behave like the NLL (non-Laminar Lip) in transporting water. The run-off is downwards on the faceshield.
- All the way up, the LL does obscure the view thru the windshield. Detach the Velcro attachments and store in a saddlebag.- minor irritation.
- The number of bugs impacting the faceshield may actually be lower than an OEM based on this weekends trip with Kempo san. He needed to clean his more frequently.
- I guess I should try removing the LL for a while and do a comparison. Maybe this week
Life with the lip is good. The LL works as claimed. With the windshield down all the way, the air lightly skims the top of my helmet. Noise and air turbulence are fair, I wear earplugs so it's not a major issue anyway. If my posture starts to bother me on a long trip, I raise the windshield and the back pressure alloys me to change the way I sit for a while. I always go back to the lowest position setting, what a view that gives you. Love my Lip :D .

I took off my LL today for a short ride. Are you guys nuts putting up with that much wind turbulence  ? I have to revise my earlier review. What a difference taking off the LL made!!
Without the LL the wind hits about chest high. The noise level and the helmet buffeting go up dramatically. Bugs and road debris are flying everywhere (especially on the slab) in my normally calm pocket of air. With the LL, I can ride up to 120mph with the windshield all the way down and my air pocket is only a little more turbulent than at 75.
I repeat, I love my LL. It's a great upgrade at $68. Why take a chance on a new windshield that may or may not be an improvement?
I now give it-
I will continue to ride for a few days without the LL and add to this post.

Do you by any chance have pictures of your install? You mentioned velcro, is that adequate for keeping it attached? Even if ridden at high speed (80+)? Thanks for the update. I enjoy the screen down most of the time, but up in certain conditions and then the buffeting and back pressure are quite noticeable.

Install is real simple with six industrial grade velcro dots. Carefully follow simple directions. I did it myself although they suggest having a helper.
As I said I always ride with my shield all the way down and have had my ST up to an indicated 120 mph with no problems. I usually ride much slower ;) .

JOhn I have been using the clearview +3 wide +3 tall and have no problems even it the rain it keeps you sorta dry. I will be fitting the electric windshiled conversion in the next week or two (can't wait) after riding with you guys at NESTOC and being teased about it :( I told you guys I would have to get one.) Well its being delivered today! from Cal Sport Touring. I think it will be the best farkle yet! :D :D (for now) I am sure I can find more. ;) See ya soon !!!! :03biker:
One of my friend's has an '05 and likes the performance of the Laminar Lip. He did find the velcro holds so well that when trying to remove for cleaning the adhesive wants to cut loose before the velcro. Basically, cleaning is a PITA. About all one can do is floss it with a towel.

Cleaning the bugs off the lip and windshield is my major concern with the LL. It would seem that bugs would be splattered on the front and back of both and that cleaning would be a pain.
I have an AeroFlow headlight protector and I sometimes need to detach it so I can clean. I have to be very careful that the velcro fasteners don't come unglued from the headlight or the AeroFlow. Those fasteners really lock tightly.

I'm 5'8" tall. I had forgotten how bad the buffetting was without the LL. Sorry guys, this update was long overdue. Terry have you tried riding without your Lip again. If you haven't, please try it and see if you come to the same conclusion. In all honesty, I was shocked. :o:
Wait for cool/cold mornings/evenings to remove the lip for cleaning, the adhesive should be less of a concern.
I have been considering a lip, reviewed the three threads we have going on it specifically, and wondering if anyone has anything to add (it's been a while)?
I like what Don did with a hard fastening solution, is that still pretty simple to remove for cleaning? How about some more specifics?

I have been really happy with mine Greg but I don't have the luxury of the electric screen.
I prefer looking just over the screen vs through it so that my vision of the road is not distorted.
In that position the lip does a good job of deflecting most of the blast over my head and also reduces passenger turbulence as well.
As far as cleaning, I don't take it off ... I just clean around it and "floss" under the screen with a damp cloth and then a treatment of Plexus.

I occasionally remove for cleaning. The faSTeners are small nylon machine screws/nuts (4) and there's spacers 'twixt the screen and lip. JuST a few minutes required but moST of the time I clean between with a STrip of cloth and it comes clean. Benefit/haSTle ratio is on the side of the lip for sure.

How do you like the CB, Charlie? Did you get the NACA vent? I have one stock height/width with the vent, but haven't gotten to try it out yet (will pretty soon, though :D )

Did you notice a drop in fuel economy with the big screen? Does it interfere with the mirror deflectors?
Dude... you're on, PM with info sent. Thanx! :yr1:

How does this perform for the passenger?
My wife complains about the buffeting when we're on the highway. My solution is to just raise the windscreen to its maximum position.

Steve, Judi actually prefers the effect of the screen all the way down...
