View Full Version : Alternate Stebel mounting location?

I have read many, if not all of the Stebel horn threads in this forum. There's one question bugging me for which I can't seem to an answer. Hopefully somebody can chime in and point out what I've overlooked. I have not yet removed my tupperware, so I am unfamiliar with the bike's layout beneath those panels ... though photos in this forum are very helpful.
When I get around to installing my Stebel, I will also install several other farkles ... wiring for the heated grips, stereo with remote, auxiliary lights, etc. My dilemma is that I will be installing Honda dashboard speakers, and I find that almost everyone here has installed their Stebel in the same space which will be occupied by the right-side speaker.
So, the question is if anyone can inform me of an alternate location suitable for mounting the Stebel horn? A descriptive reply will be appreciated, and any photos will earn the poster a big "Thank You!"
Thanks in advance ... Ken
Hey Ken. I just installed my Stebel this weekend in the same spot as everyone else i.e. up high on the right where the speaker would fit. I was thinking about trying to use the stock horn location but I didn't try it. I appears that the Stebel may fit there but it would be close. Definately would need some patient test fitting with the fairing. Other than that I'm not too sure of other locations. I realize my response probably didn't help you much but all I can say is you gatta try it. The removal of the plastic really isn't that bad if you take your time. Good luck.

Thanks, Pip. If nobody else chimes in with actual experience of mounting one elsewhere, then I will simply do what I must when it comes time to disrobe the ST of its tupperware.
Greetings
I just installed my stebel yesterday. I also have the stero system with the speakers in the dash. Looked everywhere for an alternate but couldn't find one. Personally I don't use the radio much - it was installed by previous owner - so I decided that I could live with Mono sound and took out the right speaker.
Let me know if you or anyone finds an alternate place and I can put it back.

You're not cheering me up any, WGM. But thanks for your input ... the knowledge is useful even if your update doesn't sound too promising for what I have in mind. On the plus side, it did give me an idea! You said you don't use the radio much, and that reminded me that I don't use the right-side glovebox (my stereo will go into the left-side locked box). I might be able to fit the horn thereabouts, along with a remote fuseblock and relays for fog & driving lights.
Phillyrube was going to remove the tupperware from his '03 today, and I was going to go over and watch ... probably take some pix ... heck, would've even helped him, too. But the weather was just plain lousy around here today, and that get-together got postponed.

This weekend wasn't much better!

Greetings from the North East.
You might consider this... When I installed my horn I used the suggested mounting area through these forms.
Now came the audiovox cruse control. I was determened to find a location for the canister you can buy from JC Whitney that was desinged for the audoivox .It has its own check valve in it. Make a long story short I found a spot. Above the horn on top of the Frame ear for the mirrors.
You may be abel to use this location for the horn. With a custom bracket. If you have no cruse control then this spot is avalabel on the right and left.
The audiovox servo takes this space on the left siting on the bike. See that instal to verify my suggestion, also take a look at the picture. You will see just a littel of the horn below the canister on the left facing the bike. With the middel fairing off. Hope this sheds some light on alternitive positions for the Horn.

Excellent, and thanks for the photo! FYI, I recall seeing some images where others mounted that cruise control canister on the frame near the rear shock's pre-load adjustment knob. But I like the looks of your installation better because it's out of sight.

Well, weather for Sunday looks half decent. The wife is gone all day at a baby shower or something. I get off work at 0500, home and between the sheets by 0600, and probably get up by noon. Wanna try to get together and get my thermostat changed? I'll show you how to change the left headlight in 5 minutes..... (%$#@&^!!!!!)

Sunday is OK with me ... and the weather.com forecast looks pretty decent, too. I'll give you a call around noon on Sunday. I just need to remember to bring my camera. Thanks! <Ken>
I don't understand why everyone is mounting their Stebel so high.
I have full sized twin trumpet air horns (incredibly loud) mounted so the trumpets terminate at the slots for the oem horn.

Ray,
I vaguely recall someone who mounted their Stebel in the original horn location. It might have required the support to be bent slightly. The reason I remember is because he cut the slots out so the Stebel horn wouldn't have any obstructions stopping the airflow out of the horn. There were pictures but it was probably lost in the server crash.

Phillyrube graciously provided me with a demonstration this afternoon on removing ST1300 tupperware. Seeing this firsthand provided insight to several things that cannot be learned from 2D photographs alone, such as the reason why the right glovebox is shallow compared to the other (ABS control module is beneath it ... take note you non-ABS owners).
The OEM horn location does appear quite viable, and would require modifying the original horn bracket. It's no problem for me to whack it off, fabricate a new one, and weld it in place. So, it looks like my original question has now been answered ... an alternative mount can be done, but it requires a little more work than mounting it up high.
Hey, Phillyrube? We discussed using a standard MC lift, and I found the post with specifics that you may find useful. Check out post #6 in this thread ...
