:03biker: Took the Kangamangus Highway East from Woodsville, NH, to Conway, returned via Route 302. 150 or so miles, full of twisties, elevation changes, and even a couple bear cubs feeding on the road side. Great ride, despite the soreness from the stock seat! :D

It's a beautiful road. I've done it by car, motorcycle and bicycle (55 miles with some 11-13% grades, I was young and foolish). I will be doing it again this year after NeSTOC, probably several times. :bow1: :bow1: :bow1:

Did the Kangamangus once on a motorcycle and once in a 4-wheel-drive pickup in a wicked snow storm. Guess which one was more fun.

The Kanc is a great route... try it on the bike in a snow storm! This time of year is perfect: there has been enough traffic and rain to get rid of the sand, and the foliage is thin enough that you have some depth of view and can see the big fur balls BEFORE they step in the road :eek: . Once the touristas get here and the undergrowth thickens up it becomes far less safe and fun! One caution to pass to you regardless of the time of year... dropping down the east side you hit some straits that might drive a deep urge to let the beaST roll a bit... there is A LOT of animal activity through that coupla miles, seen more bear rip across that road (and 175 between Ashland and Campton) through there then anywhere else in all of New England or the Adirondacks. Great Mexican place in Conway, Cafe Noche, doin' that ride for lunch next weekend with some folks from work.

Other routes to loop with the Kanc from the south (using I93 exits for ref.):

Ashland (exit 24) east on rt 3 through town, then 2 options;

first one you'll come up on after leaving Ashland will be a left on 175 N... can take that all the way up to Woodstock, then catch rt 3 N agin for a few miles to get to rt 112 in N Woodstock. East on 112 which becomes the Kanc in Lincoln west to east over the pass to Conway.

second one is a few miles further down 3 in Holderness, left on 113 N to North Sandwich, then left on 113A to Tamworth, then left back onto 113 through Chocorua and Madison, dumps you out onto 16 just south of Conway, then do the Kanc east to west (my favorite way over).

another route I like a lot on the west end: In N Woodstock, stay on 112 W to 118 S... this is a sweet rip up some steep twisties over the side of Mt Moosilauke... a mile or so on top gets a little choppy, then the roll down is through a nice mix of sweeps and twists. Left where 118 meets 25 in Warren, then right on 118 S where they split again in Rumney. 118 ends in Canaan, go left before the small green coming into town and head east on 4. You can do a couple of things down 4 to get back to I93, I like 104 through Bristol, or follow 4 down and drop on I93 at exit 17.

a great alt to the standard Kanc/302 loop: west on 302 in Twin MT., stay on 302 to Littleton, then catch 116 S to 112, then left towards N Woodstock... etc.

further north... rt 16 from Berlin to Errol, than 26 to Colebrook is hard to beat. In Colebrook, if you decide to head N to Pittsburg, 145 might look good on paper, but it's scetchy... twist, rolly, dirty, blind blind blind, trees right to the tar, and crawling with big critters... I stay on 3 myself.

Anybody headed this way drop me a line... always lookin' for an excuse!

many safe miles... :04biker:
