It was nice to meet you today at the ERC in St. Paul. Hope you can make it to this RTE. From the center or Rochester to Vetesnik's is about 146 miles. Vetesnik's is located SE of Richland Center on US 14 and the intersection of Sawmill Road.

Steve and I are camping near Potosi that weekend and planning on a stop in Richland Center on Saturday. Please add 2 to the list :)

If anyone feels like camping, we'd be happy to share the campfire on Friday night! If you like trains, this is a neat campground. If you don't like trains, you'll hate the campground!!

We've had a change of plans. Instead of going down to Potosi for the weekend, we'll be going up to Green Bay. I'm not sure where we'll be on Saturday. However. . . if anyone's in the GREEN BAY area on Friday night, we plan on being at the BayShore campground and still willing to share the campfire :)

Putt, I pulled out the map when I got home last night and found Indian Creek road, but not Ruff road. If this rain lets up I might have to go exploring later today :D

As promised I would come up with a couple routes that are possibilities for Saturday if people want to ride after eating. There's a 54 mile route and a 135 mile route. We can do either one depending on what people want. We can even split up and each can do their own.

No problem getting to Richland Center from US 14. There was flooding in town. Ball diamonds under 3 foot of water on Monday. Water is receding but more on the way. The roads south and east are fine and can be fun to run. Spring Green has flooding in some residential areas.

I say lets meet and eat and then wing it.

Thank you Rich and/or Kevin for hosting the RTE :) It sure is fun putting faces to names and meeting new people. We had a GREAT time.

We decided to take a chance and see if we could get home by going through Baraboo and Portage. The water and road damage we saw was amazing. We went through a number of road closed signs and when we left Baraboo we were feeling pretty good about taking the gamble that we would make it. We were just 20 miles from home when we hit the interstate area. There was NO WAY we could continue. The National Guard had Portage closed off.

So . . . go south or the shorter route, north to the Dells? We HATE the Dells this time of year!!

We talked to someone who had just come from the Dells. He told us the traffic was not bad at all. He suggested a couple of county roads that were in good condition and then a small section of road construction that the bikes wouldn't have any trouble getting through. Tom and I both heard him say the road construction was 50 - 60 yards of hard packed gravel.

Well . . . we made it . . . but his road construction turned out to be well over a mile of wash board gravel, hard packed dirt, sand and more sand.

After getting across the river we figured we had a clear shot home. I knew what roads were closed on Wednesday and the way to get around them. We ended up hitting 3 new road closed signs!! We now feel like experts at reading the signs. We were lucky at deciding which ones to ignore and only went through standing water a couple of times.

Tom still had a 100 miles to go before getting home to Green Bay. I'm guessing he's going to have some pretty good memories of this RTE and the ride :D

Who's hosting the next RTE???

Kevin_56
06-15-2008, 07:27 AM
Hosting one of these is easy. Look at a calendar, pick a date, post in the RTE Forum and they we come. It is even easier if you can con someone else to post in the first place. Thanks Rich.

Rich/Kevin thanks for hosting this RTE, I had an absolute blast and it was great to get to meet everyone. Sorry I didn't go on the group ride, I have this fear/phobia of group rides I need get over.

The ride there and back were great but it is just so sad seeing all the flooding. We did get very lucky at reading road signs. If it said road closed bridge out they weren't kidding. But if it was road closed high water we had pretty good odds of making it. It was very strange crossing over the interstate and not seeing a single car on it.

Thanks again and when is the next one!!!!

Group rides can be fun. You sometimes get to see an attack goose charge a fellow rider (Curt), have not laughed that hard in a long time. Share ride experiences, the good, the bad, and the ugly. The main thing that you have heard and must do is ride your ride. The most important thing is you have to be comfortable and only you know what that is. If was a pleasure to meet you also. Next RTE? Watch the board and attend. How about one in your neck of the woods, or a spot in between. Pick a restaurant and you will be surprised how many will come. Can you feel the cattle prod?

Have a good summer and many rides.

It comes and goes for me Bob...the last time I was really wet....the time before that I was really dry!
I think it has to do with how the water runs down the jacket...Im' not quite sure how to explain this...is the water possibly running down the front and dropping into the pant?......my shirt was wet too last time...???
I think next time it rains...I'm going to make sure ALL the velcro flaps are tightly closed...maybee that's the problem!

irish
06-16-2008, 12:47 PM
I've had the same problem :(

FWIW . . . someone told me it was water running down the gas tank and pooling. He suggested taking a small (kitchen type) towel, rolling it up and putting it between the gas tank and me. The water is suppossed to soak the towel and drip down the ends, which are hanging down either side of the gas tank. It did work the one time I remembered to pack a towel AND use it!

I need to try it again in a really heavy rain. I'm thinking once the towel is soaked, you could squeeze some of the water out with your legs and the towel could then absorb more water . . .

Wonder if it'll rain again, anytime soon?

crazykz
06-16-2008, 12:56 PM
I've had that issue too and I tucked my sheepskin down between the tank and the seat. It seems to give the water a place to trickle down the sides of the tank.

I usually try and snug up against my tank bag to keep the rain out of there but that doesn't always work.

Curt
