Man, I have to say, this atlas is a hell of a deal.
I like the fact that there are fairly accurate "scenic route" highlights. All of the good roads that have been mentioned on this site are listed as scenic routes. They have even taking the time to highlight what they consider the BEST routes to each state.
I'll be making room to carry this on our summer trip. It will make for easier course corrections when programming the GPS.
I highly recommend it! :D

I've had an atlas since day one in my tank bag.

What is the size of your Atlas? I have a real old version and it would be a PITA to carry around... but then again, I might be able to read the thing without readers.:D

mine is about the size of a piece of paper (8.5" x 11") and it fits right into the bottom of my tank bag. It is also a rand-mcnally.

Mine's like yours...but I think it will fit flat in the top box.
Otherwise, I was considering picking up the one Grant has....
Grant: How is the detail on your version (is it the Midsize Deluxe, spiral bound?)? Does it include "scenic indicators"?
IE: Mine indicates "scenic routes" by running a set of green dots along the span of the scenic portion of the road....
This is a really great feature and makes the book. I've checked the routes against many of my favorite local rides and it has them all, plus some I suspected but didn't know about.
I even checked it against my favorite Oregon rides and it has all of those too...
I then broke it out and compared it against the Destination Highway's, NorCal....it's got pretty much all the main ones there too....I kinda feel like I got all 50 destination highways states already in this book.
I'm extremely impressed.... Just wondering how it compares with the one you have, Grant?
With out the scenic route details, it's just any other map.
If the smaller version of it includes the same detail, that's the one I'll carry. Otherwise, I'll figure out a way to carry this one.
It's that good.

no dotted green lines by the scenic routes, or at least my scenic routes. It isn't the spiral bound one. I carry it as more of a backup to my GPS, it also has a lot of up close city detailed maps that i like.

I use a similar atlas. I coordinate it with my GPS, you can't beat a atlas for the big picture.
I use it to see the roads and places I want to ride and go to, then go to my software and using my atlas a guide create a custom route I down load to my ZUMO. Since planning my tour this way I find I seldom have to get my atlas out, but I bring it anyway.
And good to have backups for new fangled gadgets. Just my :tc1:

I wonder if that's a re-packaged version of this (http://store.randmcnally.com/product/harley-davidson%26reg-+ride+atlas+of+north+america+(2nd+edition).do) (which wasn't bad last I looked at one).

Hurrumph. I guess it must be time to update my atlas. I just looked at it, cost a whole buck less than Dan's...$4.97 for the '05 model.
I like more detailed maps when I am on the ground. But it is wonderful for thinking out routes and rides...Notice I didn't say planning. Planning is left for day of....
I have 24 state maps, '05 or newer....

Me???
My Opinion???
Do Yourself a favor... Buy a Michelin map... It takes a little while to figure out how to use it correctly as it is laid out differently than any map you have ever used...
The size is WAY better than any other full detail map...
The Scenic Routes are just that,,, Scenic...
I never travel without this map...
I never plan a trip without this map...
This is,,, the Official Map of the Moonshine Run... :duck:

I've made it from Arizona to Vermont using a similar Atlas and the sun to guide me. Point of reference, I can more than cover the New Joisey map with my hand. Not a lot of detail. Took me a while to find Randy's house the other day. OTOH, no electronics to fail, tho cloud cover does obscure the sun. :D
Had a revelation, tho. The new satellite receivers all point south and there are many of them in the countryside. Easy to orient yurself. :D
Don't be concerned if the interesting looking road is not on yur map, it'll take you somewhere that is.

This also looks like a good one! It looks like it will pack better too.
Thanks for the suggestion!
