View Full Version : Why does my ST eat SilverStar bulbs?

My ST seems to have an appetite for Silverstar bulbs. The high beams burn out in 3k-4k miles. Three times the high beam has burned out. Two right sides and one left side so far. Never a problem with the low beam. What gives?
That's odd... most folks seem to go throught the left side first, and usually get 12-15K miles outta that one. I'm not an electrical guru, but it's sounds like it's either that or your choice in bulbs. Which SilverStars are you using? There is a difference in that some bulbs like the H4 ST are made specifically for the punishment dealt to them on the front end of a bike... hence the $40/pair price :spank1:
Very intereSTing. There seemed to be an epidemic of LEFT bulbs dying for a while. I haven't seen much lately so I guess it's no longer happening?
I my case, I used up moSTly lefties at the rate of about 2 per year...For a while.
I have used up only one since June '04.
ALL LOW BEAM failures!
In fact, I've never loST a high beam that I can recall, ever in 43 years.
After my laST failure (which was a left Cool Blue) I put in an OEM Honda 60-55 (a used one) and it's brighter than the SS/CB and 1/4 the price.
Very STrange behavior.

I've got about 10K on my Phillips bulbs. I'll keep track of that and maybe post when the first one pops.

I've been using the 9003ST. Could that be the problem? When I bought the first set, the store was out of H4's and the mgr. convinced me these would work just fine, and they are even higher wattage than the H4.
I do run the high beam regularly during the daylight...
UnckyDon: Is there a specific application for that OEM honda 60-55 bulb, or do I just go ask my favorite Honda parts guy for a pair???

It's p#34901-mc7-601ah.
I ran Silverstars in my 95 truck once, they didn't last very long in the truck either. I had saved the original bulbs and when the Silverstars died, put the originals back in. Ten years later, one of the bulbs is still an original. I hope the motorcycle specific Silverstars last longer as I put them in the ST over the winter.
Some awfully pretty country out that way...
