I just returned from a trip and one of the movie files I shot with my digital camera will not play. It is quite large though, about 584 mb file. In the camera it plays fine but when it was downloaded to the computer it just shows the "AVI Icon" with no opening scene pic as all other movie files do.

Any ideas on how to remedy this to play on Windows Media Player?

Go here..... http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and download their FREE media player. It plays AVI files perfectly, which WMP will not without the corrct codec.

Thanks, but the other 20 media files play fine and their all AVI files. It's just this one that will not play. Another option might be to play it from the camera to the TV and then record it off there. Hmmmm

Any other options out there?

I have a V.I.O. POV-1 digital video camera and ran into a similar issue. The camera uses a DIVX Codec compression encoding that requires a DIVX decoding software. I found a free decoder online, installed it and now my WMP plays these particular AVI files just fine.

How much memory do you have in your computer? If it's not enough a large video file can't load or play. I'd recommend at least 2 gig of memory.

I have a newer computer. It has at least 2gb memory. It's weird, all the other AVI's play fine. But again, this one file is 584mb over half a gb. Maybe thats the reason. But it shouldn't be. It plays in the camera fine. So who knows.

It plays in the camera fine.

And that's the "problem": Your camera has the correct codec built-in to play that "flavor" or AVI (yes there are many different flavors, each needing a different codec to play). Windows Media Player cannot find the proper codec for your camera's kind of AVI, so it cannot play the file.

Do a search with keywords like the brand and type of your camera, "avi" and "codec". You should be able to find the proper codec, download (and install) it to your PC and presto, WMP will play the 1/2 gig AVI file just fine.

+1 Sounds like you have a codec issue.

I don't think memory is your problem. I do a little video editing on the side and I've created +10Gig videos and media player plays them just fine on a 4 year old computer with 1.5G of RAM. I would try another video player. Sorry I don't have a recommendation on video player. I use media player and quicktime. Have you tried to import it into Windows Movie maker? If you are using XP, you should be able to get to it under accessories, entertainment. If it plays there, you should be able to save it as an .mpg.

There are about 12 or so short movies I recorded on this vacation. The file I mentioned is the only one that will not play. All the others play fine. Just as previous movies I have recorded with the digital camera. It's only this file. I'll check for other codecs but I doubt that is the issue unless the digital cameras change codecs with larger file sizes??? But I doubt they would do that. I have recorded dozens of short video clips with this camera and they all play very well on Window Media Player.
