Suggested Routes
(Thanks Trekker/Sandman/SilverBullet):
Route 1 - Bone's GPS file : ctstoc.fateback.com/routes/CampSTOC 09 Mohawk Trail.gdb

The Mohawk Trail ride (286 miles) goes up to the northwest corner of Mass and includes the best stretches of the MA 2 (Mohawk Trail), lunch at the Golden Eagle (on the famous Hairpin Turn), and nice sections of MA 8. This longer ride is mostly 2-lane numbered state roads. Breakfast nearby at McD's on Rte 32 in Willimantic.

Route 2 - Bone's GPS file : ctstoc.fateback.com/routes/CampSTOC-09 Central Mass.gdb

The Central Mass ride (252 miles) circles Quabbin Reservoir with an optional (and very nice) loop north of MA 2 through state forest lands. Early lunch at a small diner or later lunch at Bub's BBQ in Sunderland (motorcycle friendly). This ride combines 2-lane numbered roads and back roads. Breakfast about an hour into the ride at the Vanilla Bean (motorcycle friendly, an event in itself).

Route 3 - Georgeorge's GPS files : ctstoc.fateback.com/routes/campstocbriansaturday.gdb or
ctstoc.fateback.com/routes/campstocbriansaturday.gpx

Here's the Saturday ride that I'll lead. It's basically the same route I lead at the first Con-STOC back in '06 except reversed. I historically lead the simple ride for couples who are not into riding too hard or newbies who don't want to push it. The ride let's us leave the campground a little later than everyone else (10:00AM) and get's us back somewhere in the area of (4:00-5:00). That let's me set up for dinner on Saturday night before everyone else starts to roll in from their rides. This ride is 127 miles and puts us at the Vanilla Bean for lunch at around 12:30ish. We'll do a quick stop at Dunkin' Donut's at a gas station on Rt. 6 about 15 minutes into the ride.

Route 4 - Karen's GPS files : http://www.st-owners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=46406&d=1242179101 or
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=46407&d=1242179101

The Hilton route:

It is 271 miles, includes shore line in 3 states, photo ops on 4 islands, a tour of my personal fish tanks, lunch at Evelyn's and ice cream at Dock Side in Padanaaram, MA.

I have some of the most surprisingly "traffic free" shore line roads in New England. I am staying out of the traffic/ tourists traps entirely. So if you want to see the famous stuff, go ride with someone else. If you want 40+ miles of scenic coastal bluff riding, island hopping and some of the most intensely beautiful windy roads we have to offer....I have that.

Kickstands up at 7:20 please (If I say that we should be rolling by 7:30). We go South through the farm lands and into Mystic stopping for Breakfast in Preston. Mystic is best enjoyed before 9:00am because of the tourists and we should be long gone by the time their hangovers catch them! A ludicrously scenic ride up River Rd and head back inland to avoid accumulating beach traffic. We will follow the Pawcatuck River up into the sod farms of Washington County, climb the largest hills RI has to offer (some of them are 3-400 footers!!) and swing into Twisted Throttle for a picture in front of the sign. Then its on to the coast in Narragansett for about 8-10 miles of bluff past houses so big you can't fathom they aren't actually hotels, and over the bridge to Conannicut island. From Connanicut we will access Beaver Tail Island which has views to knock your socks off, and no one knows where it is, so there is no traffic!!! Across the next bridge (please have your ez pass ready) to Aquidneck Island where we will attempt to avoid as much of the Newport traffic as we can by closing our eyes and pretending we can't see it. Over the bridge to the mainland for another 10 miles of bluff riding and lunch. We will cover a lot of coast line in Westport and Dartmouth, MA including Horse Neck and a stop on Gooseberry Island, (25-30 more miles of it in fact!) we will stop into Padanaaram long enough to get an ice cream cone and then start an inland trek home. In the interest of time I have put in about 15 miles of highway across the top of Providence but then its back to farm roads and peacefulness. My house is less than 1/2 a mile off the rout, so we can swing in and enjoy a flush toilet and look at my fish tanks (They are worth the efforts, I promise!) before pulling back into the campground before dinner.

Mike and I road this yesterday and must have needed about 20 u-turns. Here's to hoping we did them all for you guys and there won't be any next Saturday. I know for sure we have ourselves and 1 other planning to join us. I hope to bring at least 2 more of ya with me... who's in?

Let's get this party started...

1st suggestion is possibly starting it on Thursday the 14th?
What do we think about that?
Even if it does not start "officially" until Friday. Certainly the campground is open for business as well as my house/yard/hot tub for entertaining purposes. So should you desire getting in on Thursday, Brian and I will certainly be around..

So everyone knows and need to gauge the shlep up north,

I left Willville on Saturday morning at about 8:45 and got home and 7:30pm..
Stop for lunch and fuel and that was it..Also a good 2 hours of that was the Blue Ridge Parkway up to Roanoke until I picked up 81. I was also being very good with my speed at around 50. I figured that cost me an hour travel time...
So use that to gauge..

I also will be interested in hearing what people will be interested in terms of rides etc...

Riding in the Northeast although fun has its challenges with regard to urbanization etc....It does not have the expanse that the Southeast does but it still can be interesting..
The can be a few "touristy" or interesting stops blended in to get a flair for the local stuff..or you can do some hard miles spreading out to NY, or MA or RI..

It won't be boring I can guarantee that and you'll have a good time...We always do:D

Ok Looks Like I will be doing this one with rich next year as of now... I have a few Questions.. do you want us to make a reservation, or will you have a area set aside for us all already?, what will be the rate( I want close to the potty as possible) and after driving 1049 miles one way to get there, will I get a butt massage when I get there?LOL

No reservation nessesary and cost to tent camp is FREE. I'll have plenty of room for tents. If you want a cabin on the other hand..... book em early (by Oct of this year) and I will have to charge the normal rate minus 25% which means $60/night (that's this years rate so it could be more by 2009).
There is a bathhouse with showers within 50 Ft. of your camping area.

Although it IS one year away, I may already have a conflict with my niece's graduation in AZ. Maybe Mark and I can go for a ride.:D
Hopefully, her graduation is late May. I don't want to miss this. Why you will even see me pitch a tent and sleep on the ground, (well, maybe on a cot....and an air mattress...and maybe an electric heater....)

I would say daytime highs are in the 65-70 range that time of year here and nightime lows would be 45-55 range that time of year.

Average temperature for May and June from www.Weatherbase.com:
May: 58
June: 67

I would expect the nights to be in the low to mid 50's range.

Also gang-STers, (Hey I like that..Gang-STers!:D)

If we are following CT STOC format, then what traditionally happens for the early arrivers on Thursday afternoon/evening, people are welcome to crash at (not into) my house on Thursday.
Inside somewhere or outside in your tents works either way.
Have hot tub and caveman TV going.:cf1:.We usually do pizza that night as well..

We generally get the party started then and have some type of organized ride/route on Friday..

Figured I'd leave that one out there for those that are beginning to plan. I live only 8 miles from the campground...

I hate to commit to this, I fear for what catastrophic thing will happen to my ST the week before the event this time.

My husband has already said... I will go with you to the long ways off ones (Finger Lakes etc..)... but you are a big girl and can go alone to the 2 that are in Lebanon this year! Sweet, I get to come with out my babysitter!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's a party pooper anyhow. Be warned-> I am coming solo! A most excellent situation.:D:D:D:D:biker::D:D:D

I just realized those green smilies are nearly the same color as a Phantom suit... weird.

Yes Karen...
No tipping over or breaking any limbs please...(Also I hope you are not in the middle of finals then)

Also, maybe since there some Southern boys coming up for this that may not have a lot of chances to ride in and around New England, I am thinking of a longer more far reaching ride for one of the days...Either Friday or Saturday..
Maybe hits parts of Eastern NY, Mass, Vermont (up 22 in NY, over Mohawk Trail, up into Vermont on Route 9 etc)...Have to take a look at that

Karen
12-22-2008, 08:56 AM
Dave I might be willing to try and come up with a rout for y'all. Of course I am prone to stopping to look for fishies at every water crossing, so maybe I am not a good one to follow.
I do guarantee I can find a fantastic seafood place with a nice view that isn't on a main drag. I work too closely with the fisherman to not know where all those holes are.

Hi Everyone,
I see that we will have upto 4 rides. Based on past experience, how long should I expect the rides to last, both time and miles?

If you are looking for any routes, I have taken a basic route from Moto-Maps and worked up a route that starts at the Waters Edge camp ground (going clockwise) hittings routes 32 and 102 east. The furthest point out extends to the RI coastline on Rte. 1a and comes back around on Rte 138 West. It's about 150 miles -- 4 hr 15 min ride time.

If there is any interest and someone wants to lead this ride. I will fine tune the trip and create a Garmin, GPS file. I'm too slow to lead rides.

My Saturday plans are similar to CT STOC...(Including staying up around the fire until 3AM with Karen (we have a title to defend!)

I think I'll be taking the Southern boys on long rip into MA/VT/NY and back into CT on Friday

Then Saturday, less miles and more scenery...same route I took the Upstate NY boys on.(Except not losing an hour at Dunkin Donuts waiting for some whakky Goldwinger:rolleyes:)..Including Devil's Hopyard, Gillettes Castle, Mystic Area, Rhode Island/Watch Hill mansions, Paddy's for lunch at the beach...The rendezvous with the other groups in Devil's hopyard worked well too..

Friday:
Up early meeting somewhere for breakfast and head out to point TBD...
I like to get my group together early so we know what we are doing and where we are going....
Friday night we went back to my house for Michele's world famous Chili and then back to the campground for Shennanigans

Saturday
Ride, eat and shannanigans..
Campfire, dinner at the Campground...I'll get a big slide show together..

Sunday morning, meet for breakfast at the campground rec hall and we kiss good bye...

My Saturday plans are similar to CT STOC...(Including staying up around the fire until 3AM with Karen (we have a title to defend!)

Come on Todd... I lasted on Washington until 4:40...we can do better than 3:00am this time. And no BHazz we don't have to ride Sunday... we live in this state. All we have to do is get our sorry, hung over (or still drunk) butts home. Its only 20 miles for me. I think I was still hung over on Monday last time. I could easily arrange to leave my bike there for a day or two and ride home pillion. I should have done that last fall as it would save me laying the ST down in the driveway of the campground on the way out, or should I just blame that on the heavily loaded bike and a broken foot?

I am also pondering putting on a ride rout that will wander off in the general direction of Narragansett and Newport, RI- Westport, MA up over by the cape bluffs etc...

It's a long (and funny) story...We will be sure to put in an Urban route through downtown Hartford's finest neighborhoods for specifically for those arring in an M1 Abrahms TANK!:rocket1: (No Tom the ST is not THAT heavy so don't say it! :p:)

Mac, you can only count from Canton, so Carol gets the distance award. :D

My miles will be about 330 miles short of yours (2615), door to door, but I'll be coming from the midwest, not the southwest.

think thats evil, we used to turn each others fuel switches off, which gave just enough juice to get moving, then quit, or shut each others engines off at red lights just before it goes green.

I one upped a friend of mine. I took a stamp sized remote latch switch and tapped into the kickstand switch. I would kill my friends bike remotely, tee hee.

One friend refused to carry tools and spares with him, said it was a waste of space and if something happens he'll just call AAA. I told him, dude, 99% of stuff that happens can be fixed in a parking lot, he shrugged.

First night in a hotel, I let the air out of his tires.

In the morning he was like ****, can I borrow your bike to go to walmart and get a pump?
me:nope, why didn't you bring that mini 12v compressor I got you.

HOLY CRAP!

I just checked out the attendence list and we are up to 64!

I gotta get my butt in gear..

As a reminder, those arriving Thrusday, we usually hang out at my house (I live 8 miles from the campground), get some Pizza, have a fire going..you are all welcome to find some space in the house, set up tent in the yard, garage whatever...

Friday we ride, have Chili dinner at the house around 5:30 and then head over as a group to the campground with a stop at the liqour store for whatever you delight in..Brian usually brings his truck and we throw it in the back. We will have coolers/ice ready back at the camground.

As far as the riding goes..
My current thoughts are leading a group out early on Friday for a longer ride swinging into Northwestern CT, Berkshires/Mohawk trail of Mass, maybe a quick swing into Southern Vermont and coming back down into CT via route 32 and through the middle of Mass..Lots of good twisty roads..

Saturday will be more relaxed shorter sightseeing (good for couples) traditional ride that we have done before through some rural areas around the campground, down to Gillette's Castle for a little sight seeing, down to the shore, stop in Mystic, off to Watch Hill Rhode Island and Misquamicut Beach and finally back up through rural areas to the campground...This ride is not a twisty road ride but more of a look around and smell the coffee type.

I personally like to form my groups early so I and the collective know who is riding with whom..nothing worse than trying to figure that out the morning of the ride. It also lets the group stay small...In this area of the world, there is population and the recommended group size is 7 bikes or less..
I like to reach out to the guys that have never been here before and take them around. Its lets the veterans go and do their 'thing' while the folks new to this part fo the country would rather take their time and take it all in..

I plan on arriving at the campground on Friday evening between 5 and 6 so will probably miss the chili.

I have never ridden a bike out east, so I want to pick up some states for my motorcycle map. I am hoping to ride up to Maine on Saturday morning, then loop through New Hampshire and Vermont and then back to the campground.

I'm looking forward to the trip! And meeting people.:)

Billy, I think you are one house to far North (the driveway is going up on the wrong side of the house), and the map program agrees (when I punch in the street address). This should be the entrance to Toddly's driveway.

Seriously Mark... you going to come clear from the desert?!?!! Hot Damn! First beer is on me!

Now I gotta go get a sea kitten..... I will be in Maryland looking for some in 2 weeks, but I don't think one will last in the fridge that long, and they just aren't the same after you freeze them. (That and its a tag and release mission, do you think they would notice one sticking out of my back pack?)

If you want a real bed (and a chance to do some laundry) for Sunday, I have a spare bedroom, just promise me you won't go fishing in my living room. These sea kittens are mine.

Yeah... seriously... :)

Thanks for the offer Karen; but, I sneeze and get watery eyes around cats and then it turns bad... The critters tolerate me and I think they're okay; but, breathing comes 1st. I'd love to come by and see that tank though!
Chris and I grew up in Santa Barbara, both swimming and me fishing (shore/pier/little boats/1/2 day boats/all day boats).

I'll take that beer! :beer3:

I don't eat *any* fish in AZ because I completely agree with you on the taste of fresh fish.
So truST me I'm not worried about it... I thought the tease was pretty good though... :)

Okay we got 2 weeks to go! :D

Time to start gearing up..

First regarding Thursday,
I am trying to get a handle on who is staying at my house on Thursday?
Not a big deal but I loast track, here is who I know off the top of my head..
Gene (and Lisa), Mark, Stump, Dave (FL), TPadden..
In the Past Benny has rolled in as well as Steve...

Am I missing some peeps for the Thursday pre-party? (I think I am?:()
All are welcome, we get pizza, have a fire, hot tub is open, drink a few, find a place to crash in the house/yard/garage..

The only spots that are reserved are the sleeper sofa for Gene and Lisa and a spot in the garage by the beer fridge for Mr Padden:D..

I have a couch, a queen air mattress, a single mattress, and a cot if anyone needs one...

I also know of a few who are arriving at the campground on Thursday, setting up and riding over to the house (probably with Brian)
Jim and Big Al to name a few..

So chime in about Thursday if you will be here...

I am working on a route for Friday as well as Saturday and forming a group of newbies into the area to show them around..This lets the veterans go 'do their thang':D;)

Also of interest to anyone about the area:
http://www.visitconnecticut.com/current_category.2519/companies_list.html

We will be working on getting info on who is going to be eating Firday as well as Saturday so we know how much supplies to get...

Hi Todd, I've been thinking for a while about arriving Thursday. Not sure yet. If yes, I could do either your house or the campground, either would be fine. I'm interested in hearing about rides for Friday, as it may influence my decision due to riding the following weekend in Vermont, Rt 100/Mohawk Trail area for my Yamaha group's annual east coast get together.

You posting up any routes Todd?

Yes Carl. I've been tied up with the logistical stuff.

I've got a group already formed and a route for Friday and Saturday.
I just finally bit the bullet and went out at lunch today and bought Streets and Trips :-)

My Friday route has is long and loaded and it is a bit of a stretch, but the group that I am talkign have never been around here so packing in as much as possible.

Carl, you'd be proud of me, kickstands up at 7!!
Heading from my house up to the Quabbin Reservoir in MA,
then to Hogback Mountain in VT, then the Mowhawk trail, a photostop at the Golden Eagle/Hairpin. (They are closed during the week for lunch!) More on that in another post...

And then Lunch at the Charlemont Inn on the Mohawk Trail in Charlemont.

After that, we have a couple of hours to get back before Friday afternoon traffic starts to build and I'd like to be back around 5ish so I was forced to put an hour of slab back down Mass.

Saturday is my more traditional scenic/sightseeing ride,
Gillette's Castle, Devils Hopyard, Stonington POint, Ride through Mystic Village, Watch Hill, RI, Misquamicut Beach RI for Lunch and then back up though rural Eastern CT back to Campground...

Northeast riders has a bunch of routes we can probably 'borrow' as well.:D

Here is a Map Source route of some of the best roads in Western CT hill country. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to take a small group, 5 bikes maximum, on this route. I reserve the right to improvise as my whim dictates:D.
These are fun roads with a dam crossing, covered bridge, several waterfalls (Kent Falls should be spectacular after the recent rains).

I still have to scout a few roads so I will post a route update.

Plan: Kickstands up at 7 AM, Breakfast at the Athenian Diner, lunch in Litchfield.

You have to try it, to understand. Feedback from last years ride was incredibly positive about that stretch (Shuey and others will remember it). At speed. that stretch of road is like a roller coaster. Some nice twisties, elevation changes, off camber turns and of course sweepers. We took that road at the first CONSTOC, in the pouring rain at a sedate speed.
This year I've added a waterfall and a hairpin turn on E Flat Hill Rd. The turn is sharper than the map shows.

I could have just said that a STOC event without a u-turn would be sacrilegious.:D:D:bannana:bannana:headbang:

Ok, my rout is drawn. I moved lunch to Massachusetts. I have 271 miles and am about to go ride it to get a time on it.

In rough detail... South to Mystic, East to Hope Valley and Naragansett... across the bridges to both Connanicut and Newport, up over the Mass boarder to Westport and Padanaaram for lunch (and ice cream) on the beach. Home is North of Providence, we will jump on 295 for 7 exits to save traffic and time, then across and South through some beautiful land. Pass my house(its on the way) to see the fish tanks and back to the campground.

And here we have the problem with using the poll option for planning purposes. I just bought the ingredients for food for saturday night, enough to feed an army! Gonna have Burgers, Dogs, Macaroni salad, Potato salad and Baked beans. I figure we'll start cooking on Saturday night at around 6:00 and we'll just keep cooking till about 8:00 or until everyone is back and fed.... whichever comes first.

Me neither; Motomac, who is the expert in that field, assured me that Linda's passionate artistic portrayal of meaningful love was instrumental in the submarine forces maintaining sanity and keeping their finger off the "launch button" in an otherwise insane world. My wife and I saw it at the drive-in in Groton CT!!!

Groton - isn't that where submariners train - now you're saying it was a training flick not an art flick ????????

Figures ..... Groton (New London) is the BIRTHPLACE of the submarine force :D:D:D

There is a shipyard that does work on old and new submarines in Groton and I was on Skipjack in overhaul. I think it's called Electric Boat. They may have changed its name over the years, but it and Newport News in VA are the only builders of submarines in the US.

GANG...PLEASE for those that are planning on eating on Friday night, USE THE SIGN UP POLL...

Agreed! Come on gang. Todd & Co. have no way of knowing how much to prepare to be sure there is enough OR that they haven't wasted money getting too much. They are doing us a favor.... let's all do the same.

The Hilton route:

It is 271 miles, includes shore line in 3 states, photo ops on 4 islands, a tour of my personal fish tanks, lunch at Evelyn's (http://www.evelynsdrivein.com/) and ice cream at Dock Side in Padanaaram, MA.

I hope to bring at least 2 more of ya with me... who's in?

Very nice museum (we took Erin there last year).
Send them to Fort Turnbull too... the cannons not so much unless you like big cannons; but, if the Coastie's sail ship is there it is a sight... and the sub works across the river are cool if there is something being built.

If you are just wondering around the shore of RI I think the family and I might be at George's for lunch this 16th, Sat. It was pretty good years ago, but I've not been there in ages. I'm not sure I'll have the bike. Not a bad destination anyway.

It looks like I've got to back out of this one.
My sister and brother-in-law are coming up for a shower for my future Daughter-In-Law, and I couldn't leave my B-I-L stranded at my place while the ladies are gone.
If I can convince him to load his Vulcan in the back of the pickup, maybe I'll see you folks on the roads this weekend.

LOL Mike and I ate at George's Saturday. We ate at the take out window, not indoors, but... $5 for onion rings! For $21 we got 1 cheeseburger, 1 Chicken sandwich, 1 bottle of water, a small fries and onion rings. The cheeseburger was puny... Poor Mike was starving after his $5 onion rings and burger. Personally I though the food was proportioned small and over priced. Additionally they allowed smoking at the picnic tables and we were down wind.. Pooey!

LOL nope we are headed to Evelyn's in Tiverton, RI.

There was a steady stream of folks paying for valet parking to eat indoors while we were there... perhaps the indoors menu is better?

Well, if you'd break down and get that GPS which you know you're going to get one of these days anyway, you'd be able to use the little buggars ;) :p:
