Attached are the preliminary route files FYI.
If anyone is familiar with the areas northeast of Calabogie into the valley and across into Quebec, please recommend any good roads for riding that I may have missed.

Hi Chris,
WOW! Awesome job on the routes.
Sue & I are going to the Super Bike races this Sunday in Calabogie http://www.cdnsuperbike.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=730&Itemid=46 - I'll try to check out a few of the roads you selected on my ride home.

They are Garmin Mapsource files ... I just tried them and they open OK for me but you need Mapsource or some other mapping software to import them.

I had the same problem and went online to garmin and downloaded the latest upgrade , which is free if you already have a mapsouce product.
I hope this helps

My suggestion for route postings is the .gpx format rather than the proprietary Garmin format. All GPS manufacturer's software products support the gpx as do many GPS third party software products.
The gpx format was developed to facilitate file sharing.
See you all at OnSTOC2008 eh!

We just got back from a week up at Jockos...What a blast.
There will be some updates on the routes later this week so hold off on your final plans until then.

With a large group of 38, I assume we will have subgroups of 7 or 8, is the intent to all follow one route per day, or, split up and pick one of the different routes each day then meet back at Jocko's? Only thinking of a huge crowd at a lunch spot can be overbearing/long delay. Assuming of course everyone wants lunch.

There are lots of options for routes, lunches etc and everyone is free to ride wherever they want and then we meet back at Jockos for supper and caveman TV. Hopefully it will work out into smaller groups of less than 10.

Steve... The Haliburton route is in two sections as I had to do it that way because mapsource was still seeing it as a dead end. Maybe that is a good thing though keeping cage traffic to a minimum. It is a great motorcycle road.

Yeah and they have home made pork sausage and real Ontario maple syrup to go with them too.
The only catch is that you have to ride 5km in on some hard packed gravel to get there but it is worth it.

I can't import any of the route files... can someone convert them to pdf and put them up for us non-gps types? :D TIA!

Is there an easy way to convert gpx to pdf other than printing and scaning them? I only have Adobe reader and there is no direct import option.

To my knowledge .gpx is only usable by other GPS software. There is third party software to convert say MS Streets & Trips files to .gpx, but I know of nothing the other way. We'll mark up a manual GPS for you, and since you volunteered for sweep, just follow the guys in front of you!! Don't worry, they're all good routes!!! PS - The Wing is volunteering for sweep duty too if needed.
If you have the routes open in google, mapsoucre or S&T, and a full version of acrobat, you can 'print' to PDF. I just want to check them out so I can decide what to do while I'm up there. If I could get the gpx files to open in google, which accepts gpx, I could print them but it doesn't like the source code in the application head.
And yes, by all means, keep the Wing in the back! :D

It would be an independent endeavor and its not on a route, so if you are planning a visit you would have to get directions off the website. It is pretty easy to get to from Calabogie. Same holds for Fort Henry but you don't need a reservation there.

I noticed on downloading all the routes that there are multiple version of these routes:
Wheeler's Pancakes
OnSTOCW&N Wilno Tavern
PetersonRd to Jocko's
Jocko's to 3293 PetersonRd
Do I need them all?

I put the the new Wheelers route on all the final rev. files except Haliburton because the Garmin got confused and sent us down a jeep path the first time  and I did not want anyone doing the same unless they are on a dual sport. It is different from the earlier version.
The final Wilno Tavern route has the Crooked Slide Park photo op added but otherwise the same as the original.
The final Haliburton route is split into two (Jocko's to Peterson and Peterson to Jocko's) beacause Mapsource was seeing Peterson Rd as a dead end but we know better.:D As long as you have the latest copies of all the routes you should be OK. Hope this helps.

Right, I see that Wheeler's, for example, appears in all the routes, but what I don't know is whether I need four routes (Wheeler's Pancakes and Wheeler's Pancakes1 and Wheeler's Pancakes2 and Wheeler's Pancakes3) in my zumo. Are the four routes to Wheeler's different or the same route inserted in four places? I'm just trying to unclutter the routes listing, that's all.

I looked at the final gdb files again and there are two routes to Wheelers in the files one is from McDonalds Corners and one is from Jockos. They are both good and they take you to the same great food. If you leave the one from Jockos and delete the rest you should be OK.
Those riding the Haliburton Route will have to switch over to navigate the other route (Peterson Rd to Jockos) once they reach the end of the first leg. I remember everyones GPS's including mine going squirrely last year on Peterson Rd... I was having way too much fun to notice anyway.

Chris what temperatures can we expect next week. Its gotten quite cool here it was 53 on the ride in this morning and typically its been in the 60's in the mornings. This time of year it should be low 70's in the morning down here.

Its been cool and wet up here as well... 50's overnight and mid 70's highs.
When we rode the Calabogie area a couple weeks ago we wore mesh and were a bit cold.
We will be wearing our heavier jackets unless we get a heatwave.
Its also rained everyday for the last week so hopefully the forecast next week will be better.
See you next week

While I think of it, for those doing the Haliburton route, the 507 is rumoured to have speed traps now. Everybody gets tempted to crank the right hand on that road. Also, be reminded we have a recent law that says if you get caught going more than 50 km/hr (30 mph) over the speed limit, you lose your vehicle and licence for a week, heavy duty fine something like $2,000 and have to pay to get your vehicle out of hock later.
Last year, I believe we kept to the speed limits for the most part...... but be aware. Nobody is likely to get a ticket if you stay under 20 km/hr. over the limit, but......

We were on the 507 back in June and there was no police presence then but that was midweek before the high tourist season. At least if you keep it under the posted + 50, you are not going to get your ride impounded.
We spent a week up in Calabogie at the end of July and did not see any LEO presence.
Last year, we behaved...Just ask Sam:rolleyes:

Yep thats it. The 50km/hr over law was there before but now they are enforcing it. There have been a number of cagers charged lately but I don't know if any riders have been pinged.

I was just talking about this to a couple that I'm friends with here in London. He teaches at the police academy in Alymer and his wife works in the London Head Quarters. If fact, she is the one that the officers contact to proceed with the impound. She told me that they are instructed to start impounding cars going over 50 kms over the limit with zero tolerance. She also advised that there is someone testing the validity of this in court at the moment. She feels that the police may not have the right to impound cars under this infraction. But, this will take some time and in the meantime, they will be impounding cars for a week, immediate suspension of drivers license and a fine of a minimum of $2,000.
So, be vigilant since it is very easy to reach +50 kms over the limit. In fact, just about a month ago, I got caught at +43 kms over in my car, but he did drop it down to +20 kms. He said that if I had reached the +50, I would be walking!!!!
See you all soon.
Cheers,
RaYzerman

I would suspect Saturday would be the day for bears to be out or a Friday night looking for cottagers driving up north. I do know a couple of bike riders who have been given performance awards (wasn't me, and I wasn't with them). Obviously, they were going more than 20 kms. over.

The limit is 80kms/hr(50mph) on most of the county roads and drops to 50kms/hr(30mph) through the towns.
As Ray said, you are pretty safe if you keep it to no more than 20Kms/hr over when you are away from the towns. There are still some areas where you can push it a bit more as long as the traffic is light.
