We had another tech session today - after a nice morning ride with two buddies, one on a K1200LT and the other on a Valk - it hauls !

So it was time for brake pads. OEM (!) were worn, one down to almost nothing - 40,000kms / 25,000 miles. This is the ABS model but it was pretty straightforward - empty out the reservoir a bit, loosen the pins, spread them apart a bit - slide the old ones out.

Install new (front ones were a tight fit, rear no problem). I used EBC sintered pads (HH) as I've used them before on other bikes with good success. Test ride was good, now take it easy for 100 miles or so.

Anyone found otherwise ? ... thanks for any comments. :biker:

Hi Mr Horst
I just replaced the rear braken pads on my 97 ST ABS and noticed when I hit the front brake the rear wheel did not stop They are linked so I assume they should stop. I did replace the brake lines a while ago I am hoping a quick brake bleed will resolve. That is the only abnormality I have seen.

Hi Bob,
I don't have a ST with LBS, but my VTX has linked system.
The linking is from the rear pedal to the front wheel.
Mine has 2 sets of hoses going to the front calipers.
but only 1 hose on the rear caliper

There is something about the 'bike running' while you test this ... remember that rear only grabs 1 of 3 pistons, not the whole thing .... if you bleed all and the fluid is clean and there are no LBS/ABS lights on, you should be ok.

I find the front lever is enough most of the time, only use pedal in panic stops.

Bob C,
with linked brakes, where front brake lever activates the rear caliper, that only happens when the proportional valve is moving. It usually sits on the left fork leg (HONDA) and it's activated by a drag of the left caliper while the front brake is applied. It works only when the bike is rolling or when you physically move the valve.....

Cheers,

Thanks for that info Birdie. I bled the brakes and it did not seem to make a difference. How would you actuate the valve? Hold the front brakes and rotate the front tire. Then check the rear brakes. Wait a minut I have just run out of hands! My son will help.

Bob, Peter is right, you won't get the rear caliper to work by squeezing the front brake lever while up on the centerstand. LBS uses a secondary master cylinder which is tied to the front caliper, so the entire bike has to be moving forward to get this to work. That's the only way that you'll get enough torque on the front caliper to actuate the secondary master and work the rear brake.
