What happened to NaSToc?

If the weather is anything like this year early May is a great time in NorthWest Arkansas.
One thing we did find is Mt. Magazine is about 50 miles too far south of the best bike roads. Somewhere a little more North of there would put us closer to SR123 and other great rides. But you can't have everything, if Petit Jean is a great campground then let's go for it.

Petit Jean is a bigger campground... give me some better directions to SR123 or let me know if there's a state park nearby and I'll change it to that one.

It looks like Lake Dardanelle SP is another option that puts us close to hwy 7 and SR 123... any opinions?

Buffalo National River park is excellent, I stayed along several of the campsites along the river and Buffalo Point had some nice showers and certainly major twisties. I was in a Cage (Jetta), but it was a hoot to hug the roads.
Lost Valley on the upper part of the river was also a VERY twisty road, but rather primitive camping (no showers) but has a cool hike to a small cave.

In all my camping...
I've never seen a bear...
I've seen deer, rabits, turtles and javelenas, that's it...
As long as you don't keep food in your campsite you'll be fine with animals.. they really don't want you, they want the easy prey, you'd probably run and that's just too much work for them...

Curt;
You need to read Bill Bryson's book, A Walk In the Woods. the entire first chapter is dedicted to bears and what they've done to humans. cool.
Did Allyson tell her Ozark bear story?
Besides, it's a great book.
As far as camping in NW arkansas, if someone could get to Long Pool CG on the Big Piney creek thursday to claim some sites, that would be cool. It's on 164 very near the southern end of 123. Unfortunately, it's a Forest service camp ground and I don't think you can reserve sites. Nice spot though, with showers.
Buffalo point is very nice, but can be a zoo. Perfect.

Joe,
I wish you would check out and consider a National Forest Service campground called Longpool. Longpool is located off Hwy 164 just north of Dover, AR. Hwy 123 is very close as is Scenic Hwy 7. The campground has hot showers, nice primative campsites and RV site with full hookups as well. It even has a pavillion that can be reserved for collective BBQs. Not too many places any more awesome in beauty in the state of Arkansas exist. I've spent many wonderful nights there on the banks of Big Piney Creek which borders the campground. It has everything... good hiking, fantastic canoeing on a world class whitewater stream, great roads for riding and is close enought to a population center (Russelville, AR is about 20 miles south) that members who don't want to camp can lodge there. Trust me on this one... even if you decide against Longpool, please make it a point to camp there in the future or risk missing out on a great camping experience.

I hate to say it, but humans that were dragged from their tent by a bear were probably eating twinkies at the time. Or maybe forgot about that leftover hamburger in their pocket. However, I've seen bear attack reports where the only suspect item was cherry chapstick.
Anyway, Let's put this into perspective for Curt, We're talking about a handful of attacks out of billions of days spent in the woods. You're worried about bears when you're about to ride 1000 miles in a couple of hours? Humans are infinitely more hazardous to your health than bears. Especially if they're talking on the cell phone, lighting a cig, and trying to find that ABBA cd under the seat. Hell, we're our own worst enemy. :p:
You have a better chance winning the lottery. But you gotta buy a ticket.
A year or 2 back a couple were murdered in their tent by a psycho up on Rich mtn, Talimena camp ground.

The Hot Springs area is really nice. A touch to the north..the American river in southern MI is super with lots of camping. The river is clear provided by little artesians instead of the usual muddy.. too thick to drink, too thin to plow...kind. Tubbing is a hoot and a great way to cool off.

My wife and I stayed and visited most of the campsites along the river from Lost Valley over to Buffalo Point. Buffalo Point was certainly the most accomodating with it's showers, close proximity to a canoe outfitter, and very nice camping spots seperate from the RV's. Lost Valley was probably the most remote, but very fun twisties going to it (I was in a Jetta) but nevertheless it was barking the tires on every turn.
I'd like to go anywhere in northern Arkansas. So I'll be watching the plans form around this one and try to put in my two cents.
Oh, and bears in Arkansas are NOT a problem. My wife who is paranoid about bears beyond all rational belief was relaxed after talking to nearly every local and National and State park ranger. But as when camping it's ALWAYS important to not "wear" your food.
And I just talked to my wife and she is READY for this ride.

Just got back from a camping trip in Arkansas. Among the normal critters that you see in the woods, we were fortunate enough to see a juvenile black bear and a badger! I say fortunate because most people go all their lives and never see the likes of these two in the wild. The only thing they were interested in was getting away from us - FAST!!
Just wished I had time to snap a picture or two.

Petit Jean is nice. We've stayed in the lodge a few times but never camped there. It's still too far from the good stuff. Bill's suggestion of Devils Fork near Heber Springs would be a better choice, IMO.
FYI. Last month a friend showed us a nice little lodge in Ponca that has a few cabins and a hostel sort of service. I think it was called The Lodge. I'll check on it if anyone is interested. There's not a whole lot to Ponca, only a general store. Jasper is about 20 minutes away with more eatery and lodging choices. Both of these locations put you in the middle of the good twisities and within striking distance of everything in N Arkansas.

I think there's a reason you can't reserve at that time. There's not a demand to reserve a site at that time of year. I bet if a few people showed up wednesday or thursday and claimed a few sites, it would be fine.

Yes, might want to shoot for 'D' as there might not be as much activity. The C section is between a boat ramp and swim area so not as much noise in area D. I've never been there so I can't tell you what the perfect area is.
If those 6 sites are someone from here speak up and we'll take over area C.

um.... ok, I'm all new here and stuff... but a.... like to see you tell THAT to my wife... and her car! Last year, as she was preparing to leave the house, a black bear with a cub came rolling out of the back of our house (all wooded), she honked the horn (yeah, i know, DUH), so the mother bear got on the hood of the car, and proceeded to give it a shock test (slamming the front of the car up and down. My neighbor heard her honking and screaming, and came over and fired a round in the air, and they left... but it sure didn't make my insurance company happy!!
#2... One of my patrolmen was out about 2am on a rather LARGE 4 lane highway in N. Central, Ar., when he HIT an adult male black bear in his patrol car. Car totaled, bear spend about 8 months in rehab, was the released on parole.
Yeah, there are bears in Arkansas, but no, they don't care about you. Wish I could show yall around when you come up... MAYBE, I'll be home in time for the one in September, but I don't think I'll be back stateside until mid-late September.

Our bears are much more domesticated than those of Utah. Just invite them over for dinner and you'll not have any problems.

Not to worry-our bears are pretty sophisticated, much more so then those of Utah. The worst thing you can do is not inviting them over for dinner.

First time poster here and looking to go camping. A couple of guys I ride with are planning on coming too. One's a BMW man, the other is a BMW or DUCATI or a GUZZI man, what ever he feels like that day. I've been going to the BMW meets with them, but talked them into a real motorcycle event. My question is can you put two tents per site or three. Or maybe we should put them in a non-Honda site.
Thanks

I think 2 tents per site will be fine... Up to 8 people could be at a site from what I read... but one vehicle which I'm sure they'd accept 2 bikes.
We can put them over by the restrooms.. LOL..
I thought two per site was the norm. I'll call and get a couple reserved, one by the restrooms. Sounds like a blast, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

I'm not sure if me and my S.O. are coming or not. If so, I'll be another BMW rider with my S.O. on an ST1300.
I'm sorry I haven't been to the site in awhile, as I certainly would've pushed for meeting at Long Pool Campground, which is on the beautiful Mulberry River, has clean hot showers, flush toilets, etc (though probably not as fancy as the state parks), and reservations can be made for at least some of the sites. It's is north of Russelville and Dover, both with Motels (in case Curt needs one), grocery stores, gas stations, etc. Also within 8-10 miles of some of the best roads in the Ozarks (IMO).
And Curt, there are bears in the Ozarks and Ouachita Mtns. (One night, one was sniffing around our tent and I could see his shadow because of the moonlight. I was scared to death because, like an idiot, I had a bottle of Robitussin cough syrup in the tent. Also, didn't want to move or make a sound to wake up Mike. The next morning, I noticed that a very large wood pile had been knocked down. When I asked the property owner what happened, he said that there was a full grown bear cub that frequently knocked down his wood pile "playing"). Have seen fresh track over our mountain bike tracks in the Ouachita's. The main thing is: don't eat or bring food or anything like gum, toothpaste, etc into your tent or leave it lying around. Campgrounds in some parts of the country have "bear boxes" to store food items, and many have bear proof trash cans. We were recently in Big Bend Nat'l Park, and I said "they've added bear boxes". Actually, they were javelina (similar to large pigs) boxes.
I notice that Devil's Hollow is approx 30 miles east of Clinton, and Clinton is another 30 miles (approx) from the best roads in the area (total 60 miles). But the roads around Clinton are certainly nice. I haven't been to Devil's Hollow, so I don't have an opinion other than what I see on a topo map. The area around Deviol's Hollow looks similar to Clinton as far as the size and steepness of the hills/mtns; the rods are hilly, cury, and scenic, but lack the feeling that you're in bigtger Mtns). It's also closer to Mountain Home and Mountain View, and to "Push Mountain Road", if anyone wants to go there.
I have no doubt that Devil's Hollow is a better option than riding across the Arkansas River Valley, but I still feel that Long Pool is the best option (near towns for groceries, gas, motels), etc. And, you would start your day within 8-10 miles of awesome riding. At least some of the sites at Nat'l Forest Campgrounds can be reserved, and I'd assume that this one gets most of it's use during summer, hunting season, or if the River is up (canoers and kayakers). Otherwise, I bet it's mostly empty. I vote that next year Campstoc should be held there.
I 40 follows the AR. R. for the most part. There are a number of busy towns along I 40, and there are not many bridges that cross the river. Petite Jean is a very beautiful state park with very reasonbly prices for lodge rooms, cabins, and I'd assume caqmping (it's my favorite when compared to Mt Magazine and Mt Nebo, which are all in the same general area south of I 40 AND south of the Arkansas R. Those state parks would be a great stop-over place for somebody riding/driving into the area for Campstoc, and are well worth seeing. But if Campstoc is held there, you can count on spending an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening getting across the valley, just to reach the edge of the Ozark Mtns. In the afternoon, the traffic is very heavy and it can also be very hot in May. A rude awakening after spending a pleasant cool day in the mtns (it can be hot in the Mtn's also, or quite cool).
Last year, it was nice meeting local riders that came by to say hello and meet the rest of us, even though we didn't all get to ride together. Are you going to make it this year Mellow? How about you, Sandman, Orlin, Glen, Curt? What are the exact dates?
Hope to see y'all there.

Reservations are through "Reserve America", and it's only $60 to reserve all the CampStoc nights.... I expect park admission may be a few dollars a day additional, but we'll find that out when we get there.
Reservations can be canceled, or changed, or re-applied to any other site in the Nationwide system (for instance all Wisconsin State Parks and Forests are part of the system) There is a small fee to cancel or change dates etc. I think it's $8.
Or just post that you want to split a site with someone, and you're only out 30 bucks no matter what! Two vehicles are definitely allowed.

Routes and group riding.
It looks like we'll have a good group at around 18. Some may drop off and some may decide to come at the last minute.
But, thought I'd just let everyone know my thoughts on group riding - There's no such thing. Everyone rides their own ride and as far as a group staying together, I personally prefer no more than 3 to 5 bikes per group.
We'll get together the night before and see who's riding with who and try to also split up by riding styles. Maybe we all plan on different routes with a common lunch destination each day, or something like that.
I typically like to hit Hwy 341 and also hwy 23 (Pig Trail Scenic byway). But, you can get lost in northern Arkansas and never care because of the twisties everywhere - I'm sure there are locals that know some roads better than I do.
I'm not posting any specific routes here as that would consitute planning and that's way too structured for me. But, if anyone has some suggestions, lets hear them, I can't wait for this trip.

Memphis is thru Little Rock, but I want to go a more direct rt on 64 to Bald

simpler than to go to searcy, than west on 36, 124, 225. What do you think?

I arrived in Knoxville around 8pm after riding from Rolla, Mo all day (680 miles) bsrely beating out a rain/hail storm. One thing I did was give my wife and all my kids an especially long hug after I got home on Saturday. When something as tragic as Kents accident and death gets as close to you as his did, it will make you stop and do a check on your priorities in life. Didn't know Kent very well, just met him the day before. He was alikable fellow with a love for riding and seeing the country. (which he had done) At our last gas stop, when Joe was asking how we were likingthe route, kent said with a big smile, " I'm having fun". Enough said. RIP Kent.
