Updated 10-2-08:
The samples are here; THE SAMPLES ARE HERE!!
OK, I have attached a couple pics of the samples I received yesterday. Needless to say they look SWEET! Not the best pics, mind you. I spent a whole 18seconds getting things set up!
Also, I've extended the sale for 1 more week. The total number is not where I hoped to be and I would like a few more sets to be paid for when I contact Keith with the go-ahead.
SO YOU STILL HAVE A CHANCE TO ORDER!
I apologize for the delay that this will cause.

A few notes:
As of 9-8-08, the badges are still in a "Pre-production" state. Samples are being generated by the mfg and will be sent to Keith @ BikeQuip for approval. Keith is on "Holiday" until September 16, 2008. He should have the samples by then. If any changes are needed, he will inform me, then I will inform you.
At this time I DO NOT HAVE AN ETA. If the pre-production goes well, I would expect to have the badges NO EARLIER than the 2nd week of October (and I am planning to go to the Blue Ridge Gathering that weekend). I will update this thread on the ST-Owners board with new information as it becomes available.
If you have any questions that I have not answered here, please email me at the above, PM me or post here. I'll do my best to provide the answers!
Soon we will be setting a "CUTOFF" date, so that we can get these moving. We are currently at 86 sets, and WE CAN ORDER MORE THAN 100 IF NECESSARY.

That's right, I said "Pan-American"!!:hat1:
The V-4 badge group buy was such a success that it has inspired another potential group buy.
I say potential because at this point, these badges are just a design. I have been in communication with Keith at Bike-Quip and we have decided to see if this will fly.
Here's what's going on. Currently Bike-Quip sells a resin "Pan-European" (http://www.st1300-accessories.co.uk/st1300_pan_badges.html) badge. Keith has had great response to these badges. Several have approached him and asked about a "Pan-American" version. We kicked a few things around and decided to see if we can get enough orders to make a production run.
I along with about 45 others have the V-4 badges and I'm very pleased with them. I have seen the "Pan European" version and I was very pleased with them. These ARE NOT a flat vinyl sticker, they are cast in resin. They look like something the factory would install.
We will have to order 100 sets (2 per set) to make the minimum production run.
We do not yet have a total cost (since they have not been produced yet!) but we hope to be in the $45-50 range.
This IS NOT a confirmed order, we are gauging interest. Again, we will need a MINIMUM of 100 sets to order. If we do not have good interest, these will not be produced.
IF you are interested, please post a reply on this thread. You ARE NOT ORDERING at this point and you WILL NOT be held to your reply. Since these have not been produced, I can not give an ETA. But according to Keith production should take 2-3 weeks.
The image on the left is the proposed design, the right is a picture of the current "Pan-European" version.

Pat, just a thought on this: at one time I had Trans-American decals on my (then blue) 91. I thought "Trans" as in across, more appropriate than "pan" (covering). We all know STs don't cover America but several have crossed it.

It would be nice if they could put thirteen stars on this instead of the twelve. I'm sure most of you know the significance of the number 13 as it deals with our early history. The 12 stars on the PanEuropean badge represent the 12 countries of the European Union.
Other than that, I've got a strong interest in it.

I thought the same thing myself, but had not mentioned it. I don't THINK it would be an issue at THIS TIME to change that.
What I don't want is this to turn into 47 different designs/ideas that will NEVER get produced....since the 100 sets is necessary for production.

OK, got an email from Keith regarding the 13th star. Seems that these badges are produced with an embossed foil and the stars are embossed to give them the 3d effect. The "original" plan was to simply change the "Pan-European" to "Pan-American". The wording is not part of the embossed foil, so no changes to that tooling would be necessary. Adding an additional star would require a complete remake of the embossing tooling.
This would add $700 or so to the cost of the production run. So we would see our costs go from $45-50/set to $52-57/set. About a 15% increase in cost. It will also add to the lead time, as the tooling would have to be made.
I don't see this as a "deal breaker", but some of you may. Again, "we" must commit to 100 sets just to get the production run.
So, do "we" opt for the tweak of the original design (cheaper/quicker) or do we go ahead and pop for a different one??

I didn't even notice the number of stars to begin with..... now, if I look at it, I will every time.
Seems to me the 12 was symbolic for Europe so the 13 should be done for the American version.. Just MHO..

I am in. If you are counting, I like the 13 stars. It is American vs. the 12 for Europe.
At this time the European Union consists of 27 countries.
And in Eastern Europe after every politcal debate new countries appear, by splitting an old one in 2 or more pieces.
Why not 50 stars in the Pan American badge??
We need several Eastern European wars before we will achieve that amount of "members". Or we should buy China..... But China could buy USA and still keep money in the pocket.
Whatever you do, I am in for 1 set.

Even better, just curious how it will look... might be too cluttered. However, the ST was never around when there was just 13 states so it makes sense... LOL

Does not matter to me either way. I didn't know what the stars meant on the original pan badge. Not a big deal to me now that I know. Besides it was 13 original colonies, that became 10 states and 3 common wealths. Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Massachusetts are common wealths. Kentucky later joined the Union as a common wealth.

Quick update:
By my count there are 32 interested (had to take off my shoes for that one...) so we are about 1/3rd of the way there.
I'll be working on the tweaked design in the next few days, as time allows. I can see adding the 13th star, I don't see going to 50 stars. I may try the design that way, we'll see.
So if you're interested and have not posted, get "on the list", we still need 70 or so sets committed before we do the production run.
Just clearing up:
1 set = 2 pcs.
Estimated price PER SET (with design changes discussed) $52-57.
Shipping will be determined and most likely a "flat rate" ($3 - 5)
Mellow
06-06-2008, 07:46 AM
We can set up a new poll based on a 13 star and projected price point.
We can set the poll up to be public (see who votes) and each vote can be how many sets you want to buy, in case some want more than one.
I'd like one set for myself and I'll buy another set to give to whomever ends up being the member of the year this year.

It won't get any added visibility. This post shows up on the radar just as much as any other... in fact, possibly better since there's so much activity on the general forum this won't stand out like it does in this one. Also, since we have forum filtering, there are people that don't want to see this stuff so they filter out this sub-forum, by preference.
Duplicating it will just make it harder to keep track of who said they would buy.

Pat how many do we need to get this going?
The "minimum order" for the new design is 100 sets (200 pcs). By my guesstimate we are at about 70. My idea is that if we get 80 sets requested I'll go ahead and work with the distributor to get the new design made. That will leave about 20 sets for "future" sales.
I don't want to have to sit on too many. I *know* these would eventually sell, but I don't have the extra $1K lying around to invest!

It really doesn't matter what sub forum it's in. People are typically going to hit the unread posts links to see what's happening.. many, after a couple pages don't continue with all of them. Since all posts list in reverse chronological order, this thread would show up in the same location within that list regardless of what forum it's in.
In fact, if someone isn't doing it that way and just looking at each forum separately, putting it in the general forum, which is the busiest forum, means the chance it's pushed back due to newer messages is even higher than in this sub-forum.
You can trust me on this. :hat1:

Looks like we have approx 80 sets spoken for at this time, so I have informed Keith at BikeQuip to get the ball rolling.
To reiterate, we are going with:
Pan-American resin badges
13 Stars (6 on top/7 on bottom)
1 set = 2 pcs
Approx size: 73mm x 156mm
Target price $52-57 per set, flat rate shipping $3-5
I will be sending out PMs to all who have expressed interest in this group buy.
THERE IS STILL TIME TO GET A SET IF YOU ARE INTERESTED!!
Please post a reply in this thread if you would like a set.
Also, the new version of the V-4 badge is available, I don't have the cost but will get that.

You'll be pleased with your Pan-American badges, Keith's a nice chap and all the stuff I've bought from him has been top-quality. A word of warning though, the adhesive is super-sticky so you only get one go at placement - if you try and peel the badge off after a mispositioning, you'll destroy the chrome backing on the resin!

That's a good point! IF we were buying the same badges!
We are not buying the "Pan-European" badges, we are having a CUSTOM badge made up that requires new tooling. The badges have an embossed foil that is stamped, then molded into the resin giving a 3-D effect. This is where the additional costs come from. The minimum run is 100 sets (200 pcs)
Although the badge is approx the same size, it will feature 13 stars, instead of 12, and also say "Pan-American", instead of "Pan-European".
I'm sure the total # of sets produced will be more than 100 sets. Keith (Bike-Quip owner) will retain some for resale, but it may be quite some time, if ever, before a 2nd run would be produced. Currently 85 (of our 100) sets are "spoken for" and should we need more than 100 sets (when the order is tallied and placed) those will be made. But with this being a niche item, we don't want to make a bunch that would never sell!
I have received an email from Keith regarding the pricing and I'm happy to say that it will be less than originally estimated! As soon as I get the figures straight I'll post the cost here and start taking payments.
Hope that clears things up!
If you would like the original Pan-European version, feel free to order directly.

Good response sirepair.
Those who are not familiar with manufacturing technique, tooling costs, etc. really don't understand how the cost roll-up is done - especially during start up of a new product.
As far as tooling costs are concerned, forming dies are amongst the most expensive. When a manufacturer can amortize those costs across tens or hundreds of thousands of pieces the individual cost drops dramatically. But, when you're doing a small run of parts that same tooling costs is divided into the smaller number resulting in substantially higher unit costs. That's just the way it is.
In fact, for this type product, you could build 100-200 pieces just during the prototype process, a cost of doing business as you work out the fine details. But at least you would look forward to selling 100,000 or more to defray your initial investment.
I look forward to seeing these and truly appreciate your time and effort getting it organized. I know it's no small task.

We are currently at 86 sets, and WE CAN ORDER MORE THAN 100 IF NECESSARY.

sirepair - I don't know if I'd be too awfully concerned about selling all of these at once. As time rolls along, more ST riders will find this online forum, they will eventually see these emblems, and subsequently desire to call some their own ... at which time you sell them at the price you wish. If this were a one-shot deal, I'd consider buying a huge batch of 'em for later resale. But as it is, the manufacturer may undercut prices later.
Maybe you ought to consider being a distributor for him, and work out some finances.

As much as I would like to finance the entire thing, I just don't have the capital lying around to do that. I *know* that 100 sets will eventually be sold, maybe more, but even sitting on 15 or 20 sets could hang up $800 or so. I have other things that that $$ could be utilized for!
Keith at BikeQuip will maintain some (probably what we don't buy of 100) for his inventory, but the mfg has minimums (100sets/200pcs) to make it worth their while. Costs a good bit of $$ to setup machines, etc. So it may be a LONG time before another run is produced....if EVER.
IF there was enough demand for his products to warrant a distributorship, I would look into it, but I think Keith does a bang-up job with taking care of ST and Pan owners now! He has been GREAT to work with!

I, for one Pat, think you have gone above and beyond to make this happen for us. The ST farkle market is slim as any manufacturer can testify; take guys like Motorcycle Larry and TurboTom for example. If they relied solely on ST farkles for their business... well... I don't think they could make it.
Even look at Honda's own farkle lineup for the ST... pretty slim!

I will send a confirmation email to all that I have received payment from.
Thank you for your support!!

Cool, I say no problem with the delay as it will give others enough time to jump in now that they've see the actual product. They probably won't be offered again for a while so if you're on the fence.. jump..

The order is in and being processed. There was some delay in as I had to "finance" a few more sets than I had originally expected; so I apologize for that. I expect that these will arrive in my hands in the next two weeks (hoping Customs plays nice!) and I will forward out to all of you within a day of that arrival.
I REALLY appreciate everyone's patience with this and I believe the results will be worth it!
I'll post again as soon as I get additional info.

Latest Update:
The order has been sent to the mfg and the expected delivery date to BikeQuip is November 19, 2008. I do not want to make an ETA for arrival to me, since the V-4 badge group buy was hung up in customs for about 10 days! I will make every effort to ship these to youse guys within a day of receipt.
I can not reinforce my thanks for your patience enough! Hang in there, there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
And YES, if you did not get into the "pre-order", there are extras available for the same price: $45.00/set of 2 with shipping included.

Here's mine. The ST1300 sticker was really hard to get off. I have only done one side, I'm going to try the other after I go buy some Goo Gone.
The decal came right off, but the adhesive layer was stuck to the bike. I started by softening with Citrus solvent the scraping with my nail. This removed much of the adhesive, but did leave scratches in the paint. Most of the scratches are covered by the decal. Once I found out I was scratching the paint I switched to my 6" buffer polisher saturated with citrus solvent. This took a long while, but did not do any additional damage to the paint.
For the right side I'm going to heat up the sticker quite a bit more, and use goo gone on the buffer polisher.
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=494&pictureid=5111
UPDATE: Got the other side done, just as hard as the clutch side, but the results look good. I feel so Darn Continental now.
