I have been learning alot about camping gear works for me from a little experience on my part and alot from the old hands here.

What I need to get a really good night's rest next trip is a good pillow. I have been using a miserable little stuffed one from Coleman but I sleep with three at home and this poor Coleman flattens out to nothing during the night. I went to one of the popular on-line retailers and they showed about 25 different pillows! Of course I want one that packs down small and yet is soft and supportive. What works for you?

Dave I had Lisa cut down one one of our good house pillows and pillow cases so I knew it would be comfy and it was a cheap easy fix to the same question you have.

Dave, down filled pillows pack small especially if compacted in a compression sack.

I bought a Big Agnes "Sleeping Giant" pillow (www.bigagnes.com/str_acc.php?PHPSESSID=f8ac96957d74bc32459877900945 6725). It's inflatable, but has about 1/2 inch of memory foam that goes on top of the inflated part. It's about 2 1/2 inches thick when inflated, and measures about 12 x 16. The inflatable part and the foam pad fit inside a zippered nylon & polyester cover. Everything packs away in a 7 x 8 storage pouch; smaller than the Coleman (which I used to use); it might go smaller in a compression sack. It's pretty high quality. It's $29; you can buy them direct, if BA has them on hand, or search for a retailer with one in stock (which I had to do.) I found these while buying a Big Agnes sleeping bag and pad system, at the recommendation of some of the moto campers on the board.

Dave,

This is a Thermarest pillow we use when camping. Compress to a fairly small packing size too.

I just purchased a memory foam "travel pillow" at Target on Thursday for CresSToc. Its half the size of a regular pillow, works out perfectly in the sleeping bag. It has much more "body" than the Thermarest pillows Tor has pictured, but still packs down in its included pack. I was a bit skeptical that it would do the trick, but heartily recommend it. At $18 its hard to beat!

I might take you up on the offer especially if you get your daughter on the phone to talk about her pet corn snake. That was worth paying for.

I use one of those pillows you stuff something into to make it larger. It has one side padded, the other like a pillow slip. Anything spare and not used for sleeping can go in it.

Before I got my sevylor air mattress which has a slight raised area as a pillow, I had a normal flatter air mattess.

I took an old sleeping bag and cut the foot section out of it then sewed it back up. It was cheap since I wasn't ever going to use that sleeping bag again. It packs very nice and is already insulated. Plus, I could cut/sew/cut/sew it down to the size that worked for me. Just a thought if you have one laying around.

I take three of the these....they fold down small and I put them in my big bag o camping stuff at the front of it they help make a nice backrest:
