I recently returned from a vacation and one of the movies I shot is corrupted. It plays in the camera but not on the computer. The windows media player identifies it as "can't play this file". When I ran it last night or tried to on the Canon software it said it was corrupted. The file is over 500mb, could that be the issue?

Is there anyway to fix this? Edit it? The only option I can think of is if it still runs in the camera to plug it into a HD and record the pic with another camera off that.

Look and see if you can find a bit of software for data recovery from memory sticks. I know there are some out there. It might be able to get the file for you.

I would copy the file as is to your hard drive and rename it so you have a just in case version and then try to see what's going on.

When you download it to the computer what is the file extension?

I am not even sure what to look under.

I have it saved in a couple places.

It is an AVI file like all the others.

I assume that you can play others from this camera. Right? I just want to make sure it isn't a CODEC issue.

Try the VLC media player. It seems to play just about anything.

Yes, they are all AVI files and this is the first time this has happened. The others all play fine.

I have tried Quicktime as well to no avail. When I pulled it up in my Canon software to play it, it said it was corrupted. So it appears thats about it. What I think I will try to do is being it plays in the camera try and hook it up to an HDTV and film it with another camera off there. Of course unless there is another option out there to salvage a corrupted file.

As mentioned before, try VLC media player. I use it and it plays virtually everything. Also, try downloading to your computer with the camera connected, not using a card reader. Lastly a word of advice. ALWAYS reformat your SD or CF card after you download stuff. I also recommend running "scandisk" or similar program on your card every few months. These cards can get corrupted just like a hard drive if you don't maintain them.
