The Salton Sea is one of Southern California Desert's best kept secrets! The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California! It is 125 feet below sea level! It is 25% more salty than the ocean! It is a great place for camping, boating, fishing, bird watching (it is on the bird migratory corridor), photography, and of course RIDING!
The Salton Sea is CLEAN! Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise! There are many mistaken conceptions about the Salton Sea that are all false. It doesn't smell! It is not polluted! It is not a "dead" sea! You can swim in it! You can boat in it! You can fish in it! It is full of life such as fish and birds. It is a very beautiful large body of water in the middle of a beautiful desert environment, especially at sunset! I have spent many nights there camping, exploring and photographing, and still have not seen it all!
I will be contacting the park to tell them that we are a friendly motorcycle group and will be parking our bikes there also. There are still plenty of campsites available if you wish to reserve more during the event.
Here is the online website for Reserve America where you can reserve more campsites if you'd like in this park or the other close by campgrounds such as Mecca Beach Campground:
http://209.144.27.3/forums/images/icons/tent2.gif RESERVE AMERICA - SALTON SEA (http://www.reserveamerica.com/ca/Salton_Sea_Sra/Campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?page=details&agency=CA&parkId=120079) http://209.144.27.3/forums/images/icons/tent2.gif
The campsites have tables, fire-rings and verandas for shade. Water is also available.
There are coin-op showers and clean bathrooms!
Also at the park is the Salton Sea Information - Nature Center with free WI-FI!
There is also a children's playground!
Nearby towns are Mecca and Niland, with Brawley and Indio being the closest big towns.
Plenty of stores, motels and restaurants if needed.
Nearby recreation areas is the largest park in California: The Anza Borrego Desert State Park (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=638).
Also nearby is the Imperial Dunes Recreational Area (http://www.desertusa.com/sandhills/sandhills.html) with Glamis being its center.
If you are into Adventure Bike Riding you have the whole desert around you to try your skills!
I have included down below a few map pics from Google Earth and Microsoft's Streets and Maps.
More info forthcoming if needed.
REMINDER: This is a dry desert environment!
Dress properly! Bring hats and sun-screen!
It can also get cold at night!
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER!!!
ST1300_Alicia - The HoSTess with the MoSTess,
and I will be there Friday to greet you!

Two may be enough. Alicia was saying she may reserve another. Last year when I talked to the ranger at the park he said we could put as many as we could fit in on the sites, which are rather spacious. The park rule is 8 people per site, meaning 8 tents, and two vehicles, but we were way over that! The ranger said it was no problem and I don't expect any changes from last year. So the answer is probably not Adam. I haven't given those guys a call yet, but I don't expect any changes.

Fred, I want to complement you on an excellent announcement! You really did a bang up job of filling it with useful information. I especially like the maps, excellent job there my friend.
I'll try to talk Vicki into joining me on this trip, it sure would be great to have her along, but I won't hold my breath. Getting time off for WeSTOC was like pulling teeth. I'm going to put this on my schedule and see what I can work out. I had a great time last year and I bet I'll have a great time this year too.
See everyone there!

Even though I am very busy at work and my wife and I are in the process of buying and moving to a new house I will start doing some leg-work for the event. Such as contacting the rangers at the site to let them know we are coming. I'll start getting some info for you guys to check out for local rides and sights. And best of all putting a menu together for Sat. night FREE DINNER!!! Did he say FREE!!? Sure did! But for the CAMPERS ONLY! Don't just show up around dinner time and expect to be fed; you gotta spend the night! WOO HOO! :hotpepper

Just a follow up on SEASTOC II. There is a Campsite Reserved in the name of Alicia Brown-Docken from Thur. Nov 06 - Sun. Nov 09 for 3 Nights and All Are Welcome. If you beat me there just sign us in, it's Prepaid! This will accommodate any early arrivals. I will be there on Thursday afternoon early. Anyone who has Friday off and wants to come Thursday night is welcome. Campsites aren't available until after 14:00 hrs so the Thursday arrival covers any early Friday Campers. I will arrange with the Ranger for us to have Three Very Nice Sites together! Hope to Sea You There!
One Caveat: Drunk Drivers! The Spot is still Prepaid, Even if I Can't Make It! :tent3:

Thanks for the bump on this event Fred. I was just thinking about my camping gear and making sure it's ready to go. I think it's still in the same roll that I made when I left there last year..hehe
I just so happens that I have Friday off. I'm not sure I want to leave Thursday, but I will probably show up Friday midday. I have to see what my wife is up to and how mad she will be if I leave here for a weekend of camping and swapping lies with Fred. I'm sure she will be working, it's like she's always working... :(
Anyway, I for one am really looking forward to seeing you guys. Anyone else headed out on Friday from the SD area? Would be cool to ride together. John, when are you headed out? Any chance that Todd would join us this year?

Excellent news John, we'll have to arrange a mutual time to get together as the event date nears. Will be cool to see you riding a brand spanking new KLR. I've been known to ride with KLR's in the past so I'm not embarrassed to admit it.

I'm getting my TKC80's mounted this week (I had a blow out) and my Zumo 550 will be here mid week. Pelican 1550's, Givi E-52, Sargent Seat, SW-Motech Bars and Skid Plate. I just love my CD Moab Rear Shock and Progressive Springs and Gold Cartridge Emulators. Full setup of Wolfman Bags! $5660 for the bike and about $4K in Farkles. Sea You There!

I like the camp spots better there at the Salton Sea than where we camped Friday night. The good news is that all my gear worked. Bob, there are coin-op showers there. As for food you are basically on your own, except for Sat. night dinner which I am providing for free. SeaSTOC is a chance for new and old ST'ers to hone their camping skills with their bikes. If you need help and advice on what to bring when you go camping with your bike then I recommend you check on the forum for camping tips. There are plenty! Mellow and others are very much into camping with their bikes so they have lots of advice on how to do it and what to bring. There are also other bike camping forums on the Net you may be interested in. I can't right now think of one, but I know Mellow and others know about them and can direct you to them.
But! Don't fret! A small town near the campground is right down the road and has plenty of grub and other stuff for you if needed. The town is called Mecca!
Post more questions if you need to and we'll jump in on them! Looking forward to seeing you there!

The campground is a first come first serve. You can reserve the dates, but not the campsites. I hope when I get there on Friday morning I can grab the ones we like and set up some stuff on the three we want. We'll see. ST_Alicia reserve dates for a campsite starting Thursday. I was hoping one of you guys will get there Thursday and grab the ones we like since Alicia is more than likely not coming due to illness. Bless her!

Yes, three site dates have been reserved. If you get there before me picked the ones we had last time and the third one reserved by ST_Alicia (check for her name on the forum and me Fred Adams, I reserved two) should hopefully be next to those. Grab 'em and put stuff there to hold them! See ya there!

Alicia! That is very good news! And it sounds like you are well? I hope so. I am glad you recieved some measure of justice, but no amount of jail time will give you back what you lost.
John... Again, you can reserve dates at the park, but not specific sites. Let's say there are 5 tent campsites, we reserve three of them for those dates, not specific sites, but dates. We get there. Somebody else who reserved the same dates are in the sites we like best, so we have to take what's left. They get two, we get three... whichever ones are left over. Or visa-versa...
Hopefully the rangers will tell folks who just show up out of the blue who didn't reserve those dates that these sites with those dates are reserved and turned them away. So with Alicia getting there on Thursday, or anyone else in our group, and the sites we like are not taken then they will grab them, put stuff on the ones we want so if someone else who reserved those same dates show up they will have to pick what's left over. I hope that is clear? Whew! My head hurts! LOL.
I also want to again state that I will need one of the site's camp tables to do all the cooking and settings. So when I show up and you got stuff all over the table I'll be asking ya to move it so I can set up for Sat. night's free dinner. Thanks guys! Is that rude? Do you want to eat? SO MOVE IT!!! :crackup

I still think Fred should start playing tag here in SoCal, it's the perfect ST-Owners.com event for him. Give him an opportunity to show off his photographic talent and show us some of those little known spots that he's so famous for posting pictures of. Alas..., he's shown no interest.

Their 2 vehicle, 8 people rule is silly, especially since a trailer is considered one of the vehicles. No reason to restrict tent sites and motorcycles that way. Sounds like a prophylactic defensive move to me. Ya can't have a riot if ya don't have a crowd. :D

SOMETHING TO DO!
Found a few older photos of the bizarre nuclear blast section of a town on the Salton Sea called Bombay Beach; about 15-20 miles south from camp. It seems that this one time booming retiree community next to lake had a dike, or something flood part of the town and it was left to rot. Some great photography by some great photographers been through here; particularly the B&W work.
Anyway, could be a nifty stop for you camera buffs, early evening would be pretty good light, etc.

That's great Carl! Looking forward to seeing you and meeting your wife. Mine, Terri, will be showing up Sat. afternoon.
Packing the bike for a camp out is challanging, even with all the room the ST offers. Picking the right gear, small and light, is often the key. You'll be meeting a lot of hard-core bike campers this weekend and you'll be able to see how they do their gear. They can get very inventive to say the least! LOL.
See ya Sat.!
Just a thought here.... Since both of you live in Oceanside, perhaps Carl could drop off what doesn't fit on his bike & your wife could bring it down Sat. The logistics may not work but perhaps that is an option.
Another purpose of this is to look at other campers to see how they pack their gear.

SeaSTOC is intended to be a "Bike Camping" event. I just happen to offer one night's dinner; the rest is up to you. My wife is going to be too busy running around last minute and loading for Sat. night's dinner to offer any help I'm afraid.
Those of you new to the bike camping, or camping for that matter, experience will have lots of help and advice from the other experienced camping guys. That's the beauty of this type of event; not only do you get to jabber and ride with fellow ST'ers, but learn a thang or two too!

By the way, which campsites are for the 1100 people? :)

I'll be riding in Friday afternoon early with John Diego and SDGeorge. Planning on riding out together. Make sure you have all the best spots planned out for us. Would have to look for a spot away from everyone else if Todd was coming but I haven't heard a peep from Mean ST.
Just curious, is anyone bring a camp stove....... LOL:hat1:
MeanST has to fly out to Mississippi on Mon. AM, he's not going to make it this time. It was a lot easier to get him to come on rides before he got a job.
I'm bringing a stove and a 8 cup coffee pot & coffee for 4 pots. And some other tasty snacks for us all to enjoy!

Nah, don't toss them...
Use the LOX method of lighting the charcoal (see http://www.columbiatribune.com/2005/Jul/20050703Comm006.asp), then return them to Wal-Mart for a refund while complaining about "cheap Chinese quality"...:D

Well, looks like Don, Joe and my non-ST friend Walt aren't going to make it out with me on Saturday. I'll head out Saturday AM solo and be there to hang out with folks for the day. Back Saturday afternoon.
I had been planning on riding the Dakar, but I've got the front rim off and torn apart for some maintenance. I've got to get everything perfect for the run up north this summer.
See ya Saturday mid-morning.

I wasn't sure if I'd be able to ride this weekend, so couldn't commit in advance. However, I was also able to show mid-morning, but most people were out on a ride. Fred & Terri were there getting ready for the BBQ, as well as Alicia helping out. Keith and Wayne showed up while I was there, and Dana rolled in from his ride just before I left.
I did see a group of DS bikes on 111, which I suspect was our group coming back in. I also ran across a couple of STs on the way in to Borrego.
It was a great ride down 74 in to Palm Desert and then up Montezuma from Borrego. Overall, a nice 250 miles ride on some great twisties. Sorry I wasn't able to see everyone.

Just made it home, what a great weekend...(except the ride home). Lots of folks to chat with, nice ride up Box Canyon and through Joshua Tree, great BBQ dinner. The ride home was quite eventful, 40 mph winds across the desert , up and over Banner Grade and the temp was down to 39 and hailing. I’ll let Dana & John explain how wet we got. Wouldn’t have missed it for anything….last but not least…a BIG ST thanks to Fred & Terri for the Carne Asada Dinner.:bow1:

Saturday at the Salton Sea was just perfect.

Wayne and I pulled out around 9:30. First thing we did was top off the bikes and then head south down the 86 for Borego Springs. Winds and dust were awfull. On up through Ocotillo Wells it just got worst. Thought we were getting around the storm by choosing this route. Skies over Borego Springs were dark and you could see the rain coming down. We stopped and had early lunch and watched as it rained on our bikes just outside.. By the time we'd finished the rain had past over. Up and over S-22 all we had to deal with were the winds. We split up at the 79 and I rolled up into the garage at around 1:30, still nice and dry.
Truly an adventure getting home topping off a GREAT weekend.
See you all next year at SeaSTOC III.

Ok guys lots and lots of pictures of SeaSTOC 2008 (http://www.dmulk.com/bikes/dteel/SeaSTOC08/), the biggest and bestest of them all posted here (http://www.dmulk.com/bikes/dteel/SeaSTOC08/)!
I did my best to get pictures that really captured the event this year. I also gave it my best shot at being artsy fartsy as Fred would put it.
I had such a good time! Thanks to Terri and Fred for being such gracious hosts. I was so happy to do my little part by helping to cook. Fred, I'm really looking forward to next year when you're actually going to bring Veronica. If I may make a suggestion, maybe we should explore some of the campsites on the other side of the lake away from the highway and railroad tracks... Can't ask for better weather, it was soooo nice.
I sure hope you guys got the most out of those brewskies that I left there. Some thing about good friends, good atmosphere and good beer that just seems to go together.
As for the ride home, yeah we really ran the gauntlet. First a very heavy sandstorm, reminded me of blizzards in my home state of Iowa, then the sandstorm finally ended only for it to start raining. As if that wasn't bad enough we also got pelted on several occasions with hail, some as large as peas! The temps plummeted to 39 at one point, needless to say, John, George and I were some miserable riders. We stopped in Wynola for shelter and had hot coffee and a $10 bowl of soup. George was nice enough to pick up the tab. I arrived home pretty much wore out, but regardless of the trials encountered on the road home. I had one hell of a good time!

Great shots, Dana. I'm glad somebody got a pic of Byron's Hi-Viz drink. :D
Just got in today a little before 3:00 pm. I didn't leave until after 11:30 am as I stayed to make sure Alicia was packed & OK. Byron left first & George second. They all went dirt riding on Sunday & had a great time. I stayed in camp to read as the wind was kind of bad & I didn't feel like riding in it. Probably a good thing as some of the gusts were really strong. We put up the rain flies before they went riding since it looked like major yuck over the sea & below the mountains. They went from visible to dust, then visible & dust again several times. I had to change the guy lines on George & Alicia's tents several times as the wind really picked up. I actually had to stand & hold onto one of the poles in Georges tent as the wind was threatening to flatten it.
It died down around dusk & Alicia fixed us some leftover asada tacos, burgers, potato & macaroni salad for dinner. We managed to scrounge up enough firewood for a small fire & talked around it until after 8 pm. After a great night's sleep Alicia fixed up some scrambled egg, mushroom, onion, etc. breakfast tacos with some of Fred's leftover salsa. Many thanks to Alicia for the Sunday & Monday meals.
Thanks so much Fred & Terri. It was a big sacrifice for you both to do this & to stay in camp while everyone was out riding - Oooops, take that back.... Fred & Dana drove down to Bombay Beach on Sat. No, it was still a sacrifice Fred!!!!
I met lots of new people and also saw many familiar faces as did everyone else. +1 for George - Good Times, Good Food & Good People!!!! I'll be back for the next one.
Oh, almost forgot. We put the barbecue & foam cooler out by the trash when we were packing up. A couple came by & couldn't believe their good luck in finding it. Just so you know it went to a good home.
Made it home about 1pm. Thanks Fred & Terry. My pleasure Bob. Box canyon was so good I did it twice the next day. Joshua Tree, ehhh, not so hot.....
Morro Bay is Nov. 21 & 22. The weekend before Thanksgiving. Space is paid for. All you have to pay for is gas to get there & we can scrounge up something to eat. Wish we could go by Fred's house on the way to get some leftovers.:D We wouldn't even have to buy any food....
We took the tent down carefully. It was easier since it was daylight..... It all packed away nicely so she might be able to put it back up again, given enought time - and daylight.

Well my turn to check in and let everyone know I made it home around 12:00 PM this afternoon after a pleasant ride over S22 to 79 to Sage Rd and a few others. Much better than the 2 hr. slab ride down the 10 to get there on Saturday.
It has been said so many time already but it really was nice to hang out with everyone. Something about getting away from the normal hustle and bussle of in-town stuff. Fresh air, birds and critters, great scenery and the lullaby of the Southern Pacific or Union Pacific. :)
Some of us stayed on an extra day or two depending on how you count; George, Larry, Alicaia and myself. We tried to talk Fred and Terri into staying and fixing Sunday nights dinner, since Saturday's was so fabulous, but they had to leave but left us plenty of left overs to enjoy. :D
Sunday we followed Alicia over to Salvation and Slab City to see the sights. It was a bit windy but better than the rain and cold that some of you faced on your rides home. After Slab City George led us out on a pleasant ride along the canal/aqueduct back toward camp. For the most part is was level graded dirt with scattered areas of rocks and some loose stuff. Just enough so you couldn't relax your concentration and enough to cause some minor pucker here and there. After the ride the weather let up and we enjoyed a pleasant night and more left overs which Alicia was kind enough to prepare.
I think there was in the neighborhood of 21 bikes and a couple vehicles. Before you try and make fun of the vehicles just remember that's how all the food got there. I wish I'd got there earlier to enjoy more time with everyone and get some more riding in but time was what it was and I think we all tried to make the most of it.
Until the next get together everyone ride safe and enjoy life.

It was great to meet all of you. Virginia and I had good time.
Fred, Terri, thanks for putting it together. The last time we went on a motorcycle camp out was 24 years ago! :tent6:
Yeah, the ride home was pretty hairy! I had to slow about 35-40 MPH going south on 86. The cross wind was pushing us across one whole lane. A few times the dust was so bad you couldn't see 10 feet in front of you! When we turned towards Borrego Springs we headed into the wind so it was a bit better.
The cold front was hanging over the mountains ahead and it was really pushing the air down into the valley. As we approached Borrego Springs I was having to dodge debris blowing down the streets. The sand and gravel were really peppering us too. We stopped, had breakfast, and prepared to go up Montezuma Valley Road. I had been looking forward to going up the hill on this road; it would have been the first time on the ST. But today, not so much!
You had no idea which way you were going to get slammed. :twist1:
The wind would blow down, up, or sideways, sometimes all in the same corner. There were a few corners and other sections where rocks had fallen onto the road. One second you’re headed to one side of the rock, the next you’re being blown towards it. I used a couple of turnouts to let some cages go past, I was holding them up! The temp dropped a lot by the time we got to Ranchita, but not cold enough to snow!
We stopped to put on warmer gear; I’m glad I packed my rain liner for my jacket. We got a few sprinkles but as we cleared Santa Isabel it was a steady, cold rain; at least the wind gusts weren’t as strong. In Ramona, the rain got heavier as we continued descending into Escondido on Hwy. 78. By the time we were passing San Marcos, the sun was out, the roads were dry and it was like it never happened. I was pretty wiped out by the time I rolled into the driveway.
Sign us up for next year! :nuts1:

Thanks for dinner last night and breakfast this AM, Alicia. Yummmmmmmmmmmmm! :D
Saturday's ride with John and Bob was classic. WAY too much sand. Bob's flat tar was just extra special.
Sunday's ride with Byron and Alicia was great. The same roads that made me jittery on Friday were like super slab on Sunday, after all the sand on Saturday.
Short story: stopped at a way-side on the way home today. Smelled smoke. Right-hand saddle bag was ON FIRE!!!!! (Pics to follow.)
<edit> D'oh! Thanks to Fred and Terri for a terrific weekend. This is the first time Yam has been out of Mohave County since new. She now has ~4500 miles, is in serious need of new tars, and performed admirably over the varied terrain of west AZ and S.E. CA.

George, which bag had the penny stove in it?? You did remember to put it out before you packed it, I hope....:D
I worried about that happening with my soft bags being so close to the mufflers. I check them at gas stops & reposition them if touching, but no problems yet. I did cut pieces of cardboard to put in the bottoms to keep them flatter. If they do catch fire, that also has the advantage of being an extra accellerant.

Adam, it's already been done using the 1300 fairing pockets. :D
Glad to say no real damage other than dirty clothes (and the bag itself is _toaST_!!!) The pics are in this (http://community.webshots.com/album/568629873bQbxpp) album.
Rode all the way over on Thursday with no problem. Rode toward home across Box Canyon and Joshua Tree to 29 Palms, no problem. Somewhere between 29 Palms and Amboy it must'a started to smoke. When I stopped east of Amboy to read some Route 66 info, it burst into flames. The remainder of my CamelBak and a handy beer put the smoldering embers out. Too late to save most of the stuff (including my 2008 Moonshine shirt, a couple pairs of socks, and some dirty underwear. :D) but all else is good.

Gotta add that SeaSTOC was a really great event, the dirt riding was top notch. Had a really good time riding with Alicia on Friday (her first real foray into dirtdum), with John and Bob on Saturday (Bob knows dirt!!!!!!) and with Alicia and Byron on Sunday (Byron's 1300 handled semi-firm dirt with aplomb, and Alicia had improved dramatically from Friday.) All that being said, the Yam didn't even break a sweat (well, until the saddle bag burst into flame for real!)
BTW, Terry (ACL) has a new Moonshine shirt on the way as we speak. Thanks, Terry.
This event was the first time the Yam has been out of Mohave County since new. She covered 810 miles of back roads and pretty serious dirt with no problems beyond the obvious, running 55/60 with occasional burst to 70+. Not exactly ST territory but at 300 lbs +/- was sure the _hot_ ticket for this event. :D
Wow George, those Moonshine shirts come with a warranty??? :D
