I guess all I can say is you're lucky it's a long ride home taking back roads. Very lucky.

The next tag wouldn't have been in San Diego Carole, but it would have been in San Diego County if them guys up north would have been just a bit slower.

Next time I'm going to talk the wife into bringing her laptop and we'll stop at the closest Starbucks and upload the pictures. Not riding 200+ miles and not getting the tag again.

Dana I was thinking the same thing when I was heading north on the 5 with John's tag. I found myself riding faster and faster thinking some darn San Dieagian was home uploading a new tag! :D

Hey Dana was that you I saw at the traffic light? You were turning left onto Glenn Ranch? I snapped the photo at Oakley and left all within 15 seconds.

Sorry about the timing, but at least it was a nice day for a ride.

I actually got lost and turned off at Portola an exit North of Lake Forest and it was closed. :( With no GPS I figured let me just ride around a little more and got lucky.

Yeah, I was itching all day Saturday to go and get it but Vicki wanted to join me and couldn't get out of work until Sunday. I can't blame it on my wife so I decided to take my irritation out on islandstar. Seems like a perfectly normal thing to do to me. Vicki is starting to get into this game and it gives her a good excuse to say let's go ride. Sounds good to me too as we just don't get out often enough. Heavy sigh.... I had such a good tag spot picked out too....

Besides, you know I'll ride to needles or Barstow to get it but those guys up north won't even travel to San Diego County to get a tag.

Dana,

I appreciate the effort. 200+ miles of slab for a tag. I haven't ridden 200 miles of slab in one day since Dec '06 and that was only because I was going to the MC show in Long Beach!

I just like the back roads. I don't care how far the tag is, I just don't want to slab it to get it!

We'll get it back!

John, it wasn't 200 miles of slab, yeah, we slabbed it on the way up but then hit the back roads to the Ortega Hwy over the pass, then slab again down to the 79, after that it was back roads all the way home. We had a good ride, and I managed to drink almost all of my 2 liter camelback. Got a bit warm in spots but really cool in others. When we drove through Ramona it was 68 degrees, but when we got back to El Cajon it was 75.

Unlike Mac I have to work, as the tag spot moves further away, the less I can do about it. I'm oh so glad that the tag spot has moved north since all the northern section of the SoCal tag guys were so anxious to have it in their neighborhood. So there it sits languishing, dying for lack of attention. Apparently no one but Islandstar and DonP have any interest in playing. Would one of you guys in the northern area like to bring it back down south were people do play?

I was having so much fun teasing the guys in AZ and CO about how long it takes for them to get a tag done. They even gave it a acronym TTT (Tag Talking Trash). Now I have to sit here eating humble pie. :(

Hmm must have been someone else I though I saw a black ST roughly 12:45ish problaby around the 215 area.

Oh man, you guys are riding now. I'm waiting to see if George gets to Warner Springs before I go to bed!!!

Gee wiz George, I didn't know we provided that much entertainment value. I have to admit I was worried that someone would get to that tag spot before I could get there, but nothing more gratifying than a successful tag run! Much better than the frustration of tag gone awry.

As for your comment about us riding now, well, what did you expect. We're tag-a-holics.

Now I'm about ready for bed, got to get up early if I'm going to beat Carole to that tag spot. hehe

The closest thing I've found is that it may be one of the micro stations used to track the sputnik satellites. But nothing solid..........

Ok, here's the clue of the day;
The TAG was one of three and your not going to find it from the air, as they no longer exist. At one point in time they were a San Diego landmark and the lake (in the foreground) is still there but you have to younger than 15 to fish there The facility was commissioned on January 26, 1917. When it was operational, the station broadcast its signals at 200,000 watts, making it for a time the most powerful transmitter in the world.

dteel
10-20-2008, 05:21 PM
North Island?

Ok, the two clues so far (besides the picture).

1. There's a Navy theme (as stated in the original post)
2. There's a Southwestern plane in takeoff formation (pay attention to the angle)

North Island only fits one of the two clues.

Here's a hint (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=san+diego+airport&ie=UTF8&ll=32.732346,-117.197299&spn=0.031588,0.065918&t=h&z=15) planes take off into the onshore breeze.

Onicabbit

1. on a hill.
2. a "downtown area" to the right behind the building.
3. airport (looks like a 747)
4. old WWII flak cannons? (pointing westward i would think)

1. on a hill.

No, I don't think I was 15 feet above sea level, neither is the airport.

2. a "downtown area" to the right behind the building.

Absolutely Correct!

3. airport (looks like a 747)

I haven't a clue, but doesn't SouthWest only fly one kind of plane?

4. old WWII flak cannons? (pointing westward i would think)

Well, I'm not a gunners mate either, so you're guess is as good as mine as to what kind of guns these are, but one looks big enough to be a 5" gun to me.

I zoomed in on the area were I was at and I can actually see the guns on satellite photo.

Good TAG Carole! :yr1:

Wasn't all that long ago you wouldn't have been able to get that tag without a military ID or base pass. Now that its been turned over to private developers and renamed Liberty Station you can ride right in. I was thinking about using the buildings made famous in the movie Top Gun, but decided against that too. You're right about one thing, the clues (not left by me) sure left no doubt where it was at; heck the only thing more they could have done is drawn a ST in the spot in the satellite photo.

HA! I know where the new tag is at, don't need any clues. I've thought about using it myself but always decided against using it. Now I have a good excuse to head out that direction. Maybe Vicki will be up for a ride after work.

Seems that the tags aren't lasting very long, I know I was feeling some fustration when it moved up North, I just didn't have the time to go tag it other than on a weekend. I'm glad that it's back down here were it belongs.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Why don't you guys in the LA are just begin your own TAG thread for the LA area? Heck, CA is big enough to support multiple tag games, it seems that there is enough interest and you guys have a ton of great places you can move the tag to to keep it interesting. One word of advice though, keep it out of the malls unless they have something like really interesting art or a land mark.

YMMV ;) :D

Sorry about the timing there Bob, I hope you had a good ride though. Best of luck with that offer, I sure hope things work out for the best for you! (exceptin' tags...hehe)

I'm a bit disappointed that my tag lasted such a short time but that's in the nature of the game. One minute we are co-conspirators, the next fierce competitors.

It's all in good spirit though and it does bring out a bit of the competitive spirit. I know how you feel Bob, because that's exactly how I felt the day Vicki and I rode all the way up north to tag the Oakly corporate office only to get home to find that some one drove across town to tag it there in LA. Sort of a let down to say the least. Carole, if you didn't take the time to go inside and chat with the people there you really missed an opportunity.

For those that have not visited the Flying Leatherneck Air Museum (http://www.flyingleathernecks.org/index.html) near MCAS Miramar, it's well worth the visit. Not as robust as some of the larger air museums but they have some pretty nice exhibits and as Mac pointed out, you can get up and personal with most of the displays.

I went there tonight and took a picture with my camera phone. I was so disgusted with the quality, I refuse to post it. The other problem with this tag spot is that the gate closes for public access at 5pm. Good thing I'm an employee of SSC (SPAWAR SYSTEM CENTER), so I just took my badge along and the guards just waived me through. My good camera was still sitting in the computer room from downloading pictures from Rick's BBQ yesterday. Such a bummer. It was a nice evening for a ride so not all is lost. Maybe I'll have time to get it during lunch or something tomorrow.

Did you know that they host an autonomous submarine contest there every year. Many universities from all over the world compete.

I don't know what to tell you Carole, other than most of us are still working and unless it happens to be close to work, it's not easy for us to play tag during the week. You have to give us a bit of a break, it's only been two days! Heck most of the rest of the country is happy if the tag moves twice a quarter...

Nope, nary a ticket did I receive, not even a warning to keep moving. I'll have to slow down if for no other reason that I'm running out of ideas of things to tag. I was thinking of tagging my home, figured that way at least someone would drop by and maybe ask me if I'd like to go for a ride.

Tankereng posted a picture of the present tag, but he hasn't posted a new one. Carole flies out of San Antonio the 18th, so I will be solo and can grab that one with a bit of a run up north a ways. Great job Don. Glad you could ride down and get it. Query; isn't parking in the bike path illegal? Glad you didn't get a ticket or assaulted by some angry cyclists. They can be pretty belligerent.

I asked Vicki several times if she felt like going to a ride, but she's been working so hard at work and she never seems to have any energy left at the end of the day. I'm beginning to think that it's about time us way south guys give the rest of the SoCal crowd a bit more opportunity to play. But don't count us out. We might make a group effort to snag your tag away again.

To my way of thinking, Don has firmly placed the ball in the more northern reaches of the SoCal tag area. Now all that remains to be seen is if they really do want to play tag up there...

If you think that's a challenge, well pat yourself on the back, you're absolutely correct. :toot1:

2 years ago, coming home from Big Bend (great ride, BTW) I was passing thru El Paso when I heard this _noise!_ It was an F-117 headed north to south (as I headed east to west) just above US-54 (maybe 250 knots and higher than my estimate, but...) I remember thinking:
a. It might be invisible to radar but no the naked eye
b. Or the naked ear. LOUD!!!
c. he better turn pretty quick or he's gonna be in Mexican territory!!!!!

This was less than a week before the official retirement of the bird.

Back when I was riding my little CB250, I had a Santa Ana sized gust of wind suddenly take me from the fast lane to the slow lane. As I was suddenly hurtled sideways among the other cars sharing the road, I was yelling "Excuse me pardon me pardon me excuse me Auntie Em......It's a twister!!!!". I ended up all the way onto the shoulder, wide eyed and white knuckled.

Still EXTREMELY WINDY here, so the bike stays in the garage and the cage comes out.

Your hint for the next TAG is found in the Star Trek TNG epsode: Carbon Creek.

Palmdale Plant 42.....corner of 25th St & Ave P......GPS type in..... 2555 E Ave P, Palmdale Ca... Los Angeles air traffic control center is right across the street. If you come this way let me know and I can give you a tour of the facility.

Got it spotted, now just gotta be the first one there. Doubt it, tho, too many local denizens.

Come out and hit your new TAG along the way. I am not too far away so you can use my computer to upload your pix. :)

I saw a silver ST on 138 on my way to the new TAG spot. I was racing with an orange Road Glide. I think I saw you if that was you pulled to the right with another bike.

I was moving very quick so I didn't get a look other than at the type of bike.

Hehe probably not we only went from Frazier park to Newcomb for the Pony Express ride. On the 138 you would have seen all 7 of us. :)
