View Full Version : Camping Towel
Joe was mentioning camping towels in another tread (think it was "Setting up a tent in rain". Anyway, I (we) are toting huge bathtowels when camping, and they take up a lot of space. I mean you roll it up and its almost as big as my sleepingbag in a compression sack, well close anyway.
So I looked at these

here (http://www.rei.com/product/715988). If this can replace my huge bath towel, I'd save a LOT of pack space. So,,,,anyone use these? Even for drying off after a shower? http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/ear.gif

I have two, a large like the one pictured above and a smaller hand towel.
These things are great. They absorb water quickly and dry quickly. Lots of times you can just shake them... pack some gear and sake a few more times and they are just about dry. Much better than a terry cloth type towel that stays wet for days.
As Tor said, they pack down small too.

I do. These things soak up the water and pack small. What else could we ask for?? :D

Absolutely! MSR has a few different models, I cannot recall exactly which two we have but both of them work great. They dry in no time. We camp two up with no additional bags on the outside (but the Honda topbox) - these are a must. You will not regret it.

I have several. They work great. I just threw a 36"x16" model in the gear pile for OHSToc. It will serve as my bath towel and, folded in it's storage envelope, it measures 8"x5.5"x1"
Sweet compactness keeps me in my saddlebags!

We picked up a Coleman one at a sporting goods store not too long ago but haven't tried it. It feels like a thick piece of felt. Is that what those feel like?

If you make it out to breakfast again, bring it along if you don't mind. I'd like to compare it as the one we picked up was only about $4.

I won't be at breakfast for the next 2 saturdays due to WeSTOC and I'll probably visit my mom the following weekend... however... I'll just make sure to leave it in the bike so the next time I'll have it with me.
Thanks guys,,,2 on order..

I've had good success with Absorber brand chamios on the boat. They absorb well, wring out fairly dry, can be stored damp for weeks without smelling, don't seem to collect stains, and can be machine washed. A 2x3' piece rolls up into a tube about 3"x8". You can find them at most marine supply stores.
You can also find the Absorber at most auto parts stores.

These are actually 1/2 to 1/3 the thickness of the auto absorber types. They are very thin, which makes them easier when drying off after a shower, they feel more like a towel and less rubber.

True story there, Joe. I have both. I use the absorber to dry the car with, but I wouldn't use it as a bath towel - well, maybe in very extreme situations, but given a choice, no. It gets really wet & stays that way until you wring it out. That and the rubbery feel....

I have one of those as well, packs down small, does exactly what they say it'll do. A caveat though, it also likes to pick up small twiglets and such, when it does, they don't just wash out. The fabric grabs onto things like that the same way the carpet they use in many car trunks grabs. Just an fyi, so don't go laying the towel down on a stack of wood.
