Since I couldn't make WeSTOC, I took today off and did Independence Pass today, both directions. Gorgeous! :D And there were lots of bikes on it (STs included). There was a few places with rocks and gravel, and with the 60's temperatures, there was water crossing the road in numerous spots.

Here are the Leadville's Rocks, followed by another easy tag. Snow making equipment parked for the summer going up one of the many "Lovely" passes in Summit County (Why waste 10 min in a tunnel when you can spend an hour over a pass).

I camped under the rain about 20 miles away from your Hoosier Tag on Sunday, by the Dillon Reservoir. But too late for me to get yr Tag, am back in sunny Texas now (after passing by what could be an easy Tx Tag (http://www.pbase.com/xradiotx/image/49107356)!)

From Silverthorne you have great choices. Take 9 north thru Kremmling ove Rabbit Ears, check out Steamboat. Then head south and take 131 back to 70.
One of my favorites is Mc Clure pass, head west from Sliverthorne to Glenwood Spgs, take the 82 south to 133. There are 3 good choices from there to get you to Gunnison, Black Canyon is awesome but is a pretty long ride. From Gunnison go back east on 50 to Poncha Springs, north on 24 either thru Leadville or do Mc Clure again.

Thanks a bunch,, i dont believe i have been up to the Steamboat area or the other routes that i recall. I think we are going to try and make a trip back up to HWY 12 in Idaho again this year. Went up last year about this time and wowo what a views they have up there.

Have yet to ride Black Canyon myself but it's on the list.

Dang, photo won't attach. I'll try tomorrow. It's A basin parking lot. My bro and I rode over Loveland Pass on July 12. I got home yesterday and can't believe no one had gotten this tag. We rode the pass with about 10,000 bicycles. What a strange mixed race - a few brave motorist like us, thousands of bicycle riders filling the left lane 3 and 4 abreast, and a few trucks carrying hazardous materials (they can't go thru the tunnel). We managed to avoid hitting any bicyclers and it's probably the only time I'll ride most of the pass in the left lane. Definitely not as fun as running it at the speed limit but still a strange new experience.

Sounds like you had quite an experience with the cyclists: Sometimes these guys can be quite obnoxious and not share much of the road when they ride in group.
I didn't do Hoosier pass so I'm a day late and a $ short. I'll post my CO pics anyway. It was a very fun ride through the mountains. I'm not sure why I don't have any of Ouray, Silverton or Durango other than I dumped my bike turning around for another run at some curves and that kind of spoiled the rest of my day. No damage though - yea for wings.

Yeah, I was on I-70 and Hwy 6 (over Loveland Pass) that same day on my VStrom, not knowing about the massive ride until coming upon the riders. The traffic was a mess, and I saw lots of bicycle riders doing some unsafe things: overtaking cars & semis in downhill sections, passing on double yellows, and going wide across the lines in corners. Given how many bikers, many cars just drove uphill in my lane trying to get around the mass of riders. I was glad to get into the I-70 east bound lanes towards Denver to get clear of it all.
DAS, thanks for trying to get the CO tag while out here thought! Looks like you hit a few of the great locations. :D

Glad I missed it, I caught a bicycle race heading up 103 on Saturday, I turned around when I found out Mt Evans was closed due to the race. Was a little unnerving sharing the road with them..Besides riding up the road with all those arses in silk shorts kinda ruined the otherwise nice view...
Ok finally made Hoosier Pass yesterday. In the upper 40's and a bit on the wet side.
Next tag is relatively close for us Front Rangers. Elephant Rock Coffee on CR126. Must buy coffee. :) (note espresso cup on back of bike)

Went by it a few weeks ago on the way back to Tx. Interesting trying to find the turn off for 126 from 285 in Silver Springs (no GPS, just maps!). No city signs for Silver Springs (that I could see) and no sign for 126. I guess you'd have to know that is is called Pine Valley Rd or something like that.
The map shows an area called "Switzerland Village" on 126 north of Pine. I saw no trace of that while riding through. Any idea on what this "Switzerland Village" is?

CR126 intersects 285 at Pine Jct. Don't know what the road signs are coming from that direction, though. Also never heard of a Switzerland Village. I ride through there often but have to admit I've never heard of Silver Springs even though the map shows it right along that road. :o:

I've run into a few of these "discrepancies" in CO. Am starting to think that it is done on purpose, to keep the "foreigners" out of the state! But I don't mind getting lost in CO!
Not sure if it was 126, but there is a road around there that goes through an area destroyed by forest fires. Quite a sad view, but spectacular in a way.

Well, JimS matched the Hoosier Pass tag and then posted the most recent tag at Elephant Rock Coffee ... Here's my matching his tag:

And here's the next tag I've set for you, at River Run Village, Keystone:

Honestly, today was one of those frustrating days on the road...I have never seen so much traffic so early in the day, and it was hot (for Colorado). On my way out of Denver on 285 to Fairplay, there was literally miles of traffic going well below the speed limit. There was so much traffic that passing was futile and everyone just moved along at about 10-20 under the limit until about Jefferson then I safely made my way past the long line. On my way home, I-70 was stop and go uphill from Evergreen to almost 'Bakerville' (most of the way to the tunnels) in the uphill lanes! Fortunately I was in the downhill lanes. But, I got a good tag in anyway. :D
I figured I had to get home and get this posted before one of you others beat me to it: :)

Good tag, John.
Headed up to RMNP today and honestly, I had the same traffic problem as you. Starting on hwy 40 near exit 248. I70 west was stop and go and everybody taking the side road. No accident or anything, just a lot of traffic. :(
Along with all the rain I ran into, it was a slow movin' day.
Next tag is relatively close for us Front Rangers. Elephant Rock Coffee on CR126. Must buy coffee. :) (note espresso cup on back of bike)

08-02-2008, 10:37 PM
Yeah Nick, I probably saw a hundred or so vettes over 10 miles between Breck and Keystone...many new ones and a few older models.
This statue in Keystone is not really well known, but IIRC it has an American Indian theme. Later on my way home I remembered that there was a bronze plaque on the backside...I should have read it again. Here is the exact location (http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&lat=39.607761&lon=-105.94577&zoom=18).
Hey JimS, you were in that stop and go stuff on I-70?! Sorry dude! I went through a couple drenchers (felt good!) on I-70 , but they were short lived and the road was dry just a mile or so further. About there being no coffee cup visible...oops I didn't note the requirement until you now mention it! :o: I thought about having a cup, but I didn't need to raise my heartrate any more (coffee does that to me).

Thanks for the compliment on the bike, and it is a fun beast to ride, surprisingly nimble and extremely easy to handle. Its interesting to watch people in vehicles give the bike the double-take and point it out to others in their vehicle. Making the decal was a very long process and are one-of-a-kind (hand cut) and looks a bit like a komodo, python, or mythical dragon. Last winter I PhotoShop'd a whole bunch of ideas and put it up to vote at home. This one got the most grins so that sealed the deal. Of course, the other side has the mirror image. Here's a more broadside shot...

That white "churchy-looking place" is very real. FWIW, I've only ridden the Vee one time and the ST hasn't been out since I got back from my MT ride on the ST on 8/29. Due to commitments and circumstances, I know it won't be me picking up this tag.

Yeah, I thought I was being clever, timing it right before the RTE. :(
...so for all yous spectators, the last tag is in Mancos, next to Ted's Tacos.
Easy there, John, takes folks in Southern Californy 8 hours just to get across town. :turtle

Fresh was correct... Rainy, windy, and temps in the 40's.... Glad it didn't get colder, would have had to turn on the electrics.. As it were, the mesh jacket, liner and rain jacket/pants were plenty warm enough...

One part of SR 114 is between Saguache and Gunnison...I've not managed to get on that road yet.
I've not been on the ST for 6 weeks now and have had the Strom out once in that same time due to circumstances. :( I had hopes of getting out tomorrow and trying to move the tag, but that is unlikely. Hopefully Follow is able to move it for us...

John,
I will see what I can do, especially since I need a fix.......:)
Yepper. 114 goes over Cochetopa pass. Has about 5 miles of nice scenery and twisties, the rest pretty straight. But if you want to get away from civilization, including LEO's, this is a good place. The straightaway approaching Saguache allows you to open it up into the triple digits. That was nice. But the best part of the ride was going north on 285 approaching Poncha pass. the Sangre de Cristos were awesome.
(Now back to our program) I was hoping to make it to the tag this weekend, but the weather doesn't look too promising.
John, what do we have to do to get you out of the cave? Don't make me organize something. I'd probably forget to show up. :p:

For the others that read this thread, the last photo in post #93 (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showpost.php?p=570556&postcount=93) is Echo Lake, with Mts. Evans & Bierstadt as backdrop and SR103 in the foreground. It is a very scenic view. The road up to the top of Mt. Evans is already closed for the winter. Portions of SR103 between Echo Lake and Bergen Park (Evergreen) are in poor shape, with some major frost heaves and crumbling asphalt. The road is very poor in some corners and there is heavy gravel in some areas--they're replacing some sections every year, so it's getting better. It's a great ride with great panoramas at many areas, but be careful on the eastern leg of SR103.

This may be interpreted as TTT by our esteemed Tag colleagues in SoCal... But it would be interesting (at least to me) to see the tag spots marked on a map, linked to post number, with lines connecting them to show how much ground we're coverning (or not :scared2:) in these tags.
It also would be a bit like the google earth idea in that others not familar with the area could scope out scenery for potential future rides.
I suspect that doing such a map/link is prolly quite a task that couldn't be kept up with, but just maybe it's easy enough that the top few tag teams get that as a reward?? Thoughts, sir Mellow? :bow1:

I really like the idea. Some of our best tags though aren't good because of the distance covered but because of the new road/area/scenery they introduce to the rider. Some are of historic value, some are just a long way away. I personally would not want to try and assign attributes to any specific tag spot, for one thing, not everyone would agree. Our tag spots have been all over the place when it comes to value, but I'll bet the only wider opinion would be of their value.
All in all, I think it's just cool that people get out ride!

Dana, good point, Tagging is about riding and seeing new sights.
No TTT here. [Although I still have the little devil sitting on my shoulder whispering some 'trash' to type, I choose not to swat at the hornet's nest (you SoCal Taggers).] :p:
Our two 'tagging' worlds are quite different...so certain attributes that are more inherent in Colorado (like distance to the tag from 'home') wouldn't fit a Tagging environment like SoCal where there is a different density of riders and 'slab' needing to be safely negotiated.
I'll still work on a tag-to-tag map for Colorado. Of course it won't show miles ridden to & from tags, but rather miles between tag locations. I'd love to see a similar map for each state/area having reasonably active tagging. When I see some of the great pictures posted in these tags, I try to find where that spot is on a map, whether in SoCal, AX, TX, or other. :D
I for one enjoy the Tag game...it has brought out a different 'fun' to my rides. And I wish more Colorado riders were experiencing it.

I thought I'd get in one 'last' ride up in the mountains before winter fully sets in...then I get up there and realize that winter HAS set in!
Here is the matched tag, the road getting to it, and the new tag. It was extremely windy, and lots of snow blowing off the mountains onto the road...I contemplated turning around but crept along. There was sheet ice in a few shaded spots, and lots of salted gravel on the east side of Hwy 6 over the pass. I'm guessing that most of that melts off today...

It was a lot warmer at the new tag! After I got home from matching the tag on the ST, I needed to blow the cobwebs out of the Strom...it had been 4 weeks since it was started.

:nuts1: ...
I rode motorcycle as a kid year around and that included playing around on ice & snow, but not with a 700lb $10k bike. I took it very easy. Fortunately I wasn't chilled so I was able to keep my muscles relaxed.
There were a half dozen sections covered with snow/drifts or a thin layer of packed snow within about a mile of the top, just as shown in the middle picture. If you look close, you can see the white line of snow laid down by my tire where I pulled off to take this picture.
The worst spot on the road was a sheet of ice (snow which packed, partially melted, and then froze) towards the bottom by Loveland ski area where it's STEEP. As I've seen over prior winters, no sun gets on that section. The ice sheet was about a hundred yards long with no pavement exposed in the downhill lanes...I ended up slowly proceeding off the right (downhill) edge in the crusty/gravely stuff.
All of I-70 was clear, no ice, moisture, or gravel. But there was the dark 'wet' color from the Mag-Chloride that they'd put down from about Silver Plume to the tunnels.
It was a fun morning ride, but one of those that could have been just the opposite.

Great new tag. Stretch our playing field a bit. I like it. Let me know if you cant read this. I have a few rides in your area I can put in a file if you can.
Ok I couldnt let it sit too long. Met up with Brian, headed down to the Air Force Academy. Brian was detained at the front gate, something about being a terrorist or something. So I got the tag for him..So I hereby submit for your approval Jim's Cadet Chapel tag, followed by the new tag. And since you guys dont give clues Im not going to either...Oh and this is a tag team post with myself and Follow

Guess a clue wasnt really necessary, huh...No concert but they had a soap box derby earlier in the day so we had to dodge hay bails.
Gorgeous week, a money run or cash run might be necessary...Some Pie from Walden sounds tempting..

Only place that I have eaten in Walden in the 15 or 20 times that I have been there, is the River Rock.. Never have tried the other place...

Well I waited awhile because it seemed like cheating getting a tag that close to home, but alas I could wait no longer..The new tag just seemed fitting for me to get. This one might be a little tricky to get for the solo contestant. Ladies and gentlemen may the game begin...

Guys dont make me go to another state to get a Tag although I almost did this last weekend. I figure I have New Mexico,Idaho and Utah, the wife has Montana. I thought about Wyoming, but slept in Sunday. Maybe next weekend I could get the Independance rock and hit Nebraska on the way home...:mcrider:
I don't think I'll be heading that way anytime soon. I have trouble just getting time to change the oil :o: Too bad, too. This weather's not going to hold out forever. Today was just a total sin to happen on a weekday.

Could make it a little closer and run up to Register Cliff.... See the ruts..
Warm springs... A little closer than Independence Rock..

Well... NoBull "Bull" Durham, yup it was a challenge to match your tag with out having someone across the street to quickly snap the picture...I rode back and forth several times tryin to figger out how to take the shot. There were lots of people on the sidewall (and street!) so I had to wait a bit before getting this one. I got chided when I parked where I did and walked across the street. :D FWIW, there was some gravel and lots of salt on the roads leading into Blackhawk.
And the next tag isn't meant to be so nondescript...I couldn't find a shot with both a sign in it and the view of the area. If ya need a hint, jus let me know.

I am pretty sure we rode right be there today. We ran down to Fay Myers to look at the Kawasaki 650 Versys. I wondered if anyone would take advantage of such a nice day and get the tag...Thats Mile Highs backyard, he might beat me to this one..
