View Full Version : July Rear Tip-Over Bar Group Buy...

06-20-2008, 09:11 PM
Due to an overwhelming amount of PM's and emails, I have decided to throw up another group buy to see if we have enough folks interested to do another production run, as I am currently sold out of all pre-ordered bars and extra sets from the last run. I will need at least 15 orders to do a production run. For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, this will help:
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14622
You can find all of the information on the bars at the links above as well as performing a search with the key term being tip-over bar[s]. I won’t accept any money orders via mail and/or Paypal before we have at least 15 folks committed. This should give any new folks a chance to get in on the group buy and any that didn’t make the last run a chance as well. I’ll be happy to answer any questions that you have for me. Thanks again to everyone that participated in the last group buy, and as always I hope you all continue to enjoy the bars. Hopefully, you won’t have to be putting them to use anytime soon, but they’ll be there if and when you ever do need them.
For Pricing: Please scroll to the bottom.

Additional bar shots (pardon the pun) including a few with MCL's Peg Lowers for passenger can be found at the following link. Please pay no attention to the Ninja. He just hangs out in my garage from time to time:

There's even a little video footage about the bars at the link available in the following thread:
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20891
The bars are made of solid 9/16th inch steel and have four weld points for improved rigidity. They are designed to work in conjunction with the front crash bars to protect the rear bags, trunk, panniers, and more importantly your leg should you tip-over or go down at slow speed. Although, I have had good success with crashes up to 35+ mph with them from others who have been involved in accidents with them on.
A few testimonials from others on the bars:
v65saber:
"bygdawg,
THANKS !!!!!!
I got the bars last on last month. Went to the MTF FLC2C III last weekend and my bad leg got me. Went to put ' ALLIS ' on the center stand and it was off balance the more up I pulled the more over she went OOOPS.
End result nada nil nothing not a mark on the bags, mirrors, no where. THEY WORK !!!!!"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TMUS2122:
Just for a kick I looked up prices for the cover on a 2006:
BODY, R. *2TN266* (BLACK/MAT BLACK) 001 $442.07
COVER, R. *NHB01* (GRAPHITE BLACK) 001 $379.58
Well worth the cost for these tip over bars, this is for one side only,
total $821.65 to replace body and cover.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
grindz145:
Ive had the tip over bars for about a month now, and low and behold, they have already paid for themselves. When backing down a friends driveway I put my foot right into a hole I didn't see and she went over. No problem at all. I picked it right back up. not a scratch on the mirror or exhaust pipes just a tiny scratch on the tip over bar and stock tip over wing! Now I just got to get him to fix that hole...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ShinySideUpAZ:
"Just got back from the hospital. On the way home from work a cager left turned in front of me at an intersection. Guy was a complete moron. In was in the intersection when he pulled out. I started braking and scrubbed off some speed when I hit a raised crack in the road. The bump caused the front wheel to lockup and the bike folded under me. I stayed on/with the bike for the twenty feet I slid.
Many thanks to Bygdawg and the tip over bars, they kept the bike from crushing my legs."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brighteyesue:
"I have a 32" inseam and a wide Corbin seat and tiptoe it most times. I admit, my BlackBeauty is a heavy beaST to wheel around the garage. Yes I have laid her down, not at speed though. I HIGHLY recommend bygdawgs tipover bars. I hate to say this, but I have used them and more than once too. Not only have they saved my feet/legs, but my saddle bags too."

"bygdawg,
Just wanted to thank-you for selling these tip-over wings. I bought a pair about 2 months not expecting to use them so soon. I was riding home yesterday afternoon when I got caught in a freak thunderstorm. I was exiting of the highway on the off ramp and the ST went out from under me. IMHO the tip-over wings at least save my leg and let me separate for my ST as I slid across the off ramp on my butt. I am a firm believer in ATGATT and with that the tip-over wings and most importantly the protection of God I walked away without a scratch or even a bruise. Riding today on my kids CRF 150 I have more bruises. This is my first accident in 21 years and 70,000 miles of riding. If this is the worst than I'll take it. Will keep everyone updated on how insurance checks out. My question is how much does it take to total an ST? Thanks again for the service you provide for those of us who ride ST's
Chris"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Herleman:
"I was doing about 40 to 45 mph when I had a disagreement with a large dog.
We both lost.
The bars did their job well (well the right side did, the left side was just loafing along in the air)."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
brentster:
"Well I guess it had to happen.. I just wasn't prepared for it to occur only 10 days after I bought the bike.
I came to a stop on a street in Leesburg, VA and when I put my foot down, my right foot just kept on sliding. Turns out there was a bit of anti-freeze on the road and my dang foot magically hit the 6" puddle like some kind of friggin' miracle.
The bike tips to the right and as much as I tried, I just couldn't keep it from tipping over. DANG that monster is heavy!
The bike stalled out and it took a bit of effort to get it upright again.. After a few attempts to start, she fired right up. The engine guard cover and nut under the right side peg got a decent scuff. The right hard bag got nick'd on the bottom a bit, but it's not really noticeable unless you're looking for it. All things considered, I consider myself pretty lucky to have escaped with only minor cosmetic flaws.
Ironically, I had a conversation with my wife about the expense related to bygdawg's tip-over bars before I left the office and she asked me if they were really necessary. I guess now the answer is a resounding 'yes'."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
XWINGER:
"All I can say is that if you have NOT purchased the crash bars offered on this site, DO IT. Can't remember who it was that made them. If someone knows who this is, please post a link. I was making a hard left turn on a BRAND NEW fron tire when it washe out on me. Was going maybe 15 - 20 MPH. NOT A SCRATCH except where there was supposed to be (front crash bar and rear crash bar). It would have cost a heck of a lot more to replace a saddlebag than these rear crash bars cost. Who knows what else would have gotten banged up (top case, seat, etc). Just remember, IT'S NOT IF, IT"S WHEN.
Someone please post link for these crash bars and EVERYONE get a pair.
Thanks"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2Dogs:
"S.S.,
I installed passenger lowering brackets after the Tip Over bars to give my pillion more room. This worked great. and... The T.O.Bars have saved more than the cost of the bars and the brackets 5X over...
+! bygdawg"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Machog:
"My tip over bars saved me when I fell stationery, at a gas station, some cat litter been put down to absorb a gas spill, turned into a person spill! Luckily there were plenty of people watching, so my embarassment was complete.
But saved me from buying an expensive right hand saddle bag, money well spent with BIGDAWGS.
I have the passanger & rider foot peg extensions from MCL and there is no interferance for either rider with the tip over bars. But, rider pegs now touch down in the twisties if my toecap doesn't scrape first.
Machog"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raven:
"+1 on the BYGDAWG's! I know mine saved me a world of hurt!
My sometime passenger says it's more difficult to pivot one's foot when mounting or dismounting using the peg. However, they've stated they'd rather be slightly inconvenienced than remove the tip-over bar because they feel both safer having them there and safer for me having them there when solo."
"Got creamed by an idiot backing out of their driveway this morning on the way to work. I thought they'd stop at the end of their driveway to check for traffic but they didn't even look. That's what I get for thinking.
Fortunately I'd slowed up but didn't get the opportunity to do much in terms of avoidance except the brakes. ATGATT - that's a no brainer. Scraped my helmet, bit my lip and barked my shins on the fairing (ouch) but otherwise okay. Thank goodness for the rear crashbars/bag protectors b/c they kept the bike off me - I'd of probably broke my leg otherwise! Tore the back bumper cover off the cage and scraped up the right side of the bike as the rear end continued on around.
I'm pretty sure it's totalled. Front forks are crunched and the front wheel is jammed against the front casing. Can't get it to shift into neutral and the rear wheel won't roll with the clutch squeezed. Fuel pump isn't buzzing when you turn the key either. Only 4475 miles!
Thankfully there's another 06 at the dealer and they've pulled it aside for me so once the Raven is totalled I'll be back on the road with Raven2."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RTETR:
"I've not needed to use them since they've been on but they'd have saved me $400.00 damage back in 2005 when I laid it down gentle in a Calgary parkinglot... right smack on a cement parking curb!"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
l3194ff:
"Well pulling into a parking lot full of people saw a few spaces open and decided to ride threw to back into the spot. Well making the slow right hand turn the bike just went over. Luckily the parking lot full of people was gracious enough to help pick up the bike. Only damage was a scrap to the tip over bar and scrap to the tip over wing. Oh yeah my pride."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John (STJMG):
Best farkle money spent. Saved me again last week when I leaned over the bike and forgot the kickstand was not down!! Not a mark on the bike!!!
Some day it will happen to you!!!!!!!
Hope you guys don't mind me posting your personal experiences. If you do, just let me know, and I'll happily remove the post. Also, if any of you have information that you want to share or additional information that you want to share about your experiences with the rear tip-over bars, feel free to do so here.
Thanks and Ride Safe,
bygdawg
P.S. Prices are as follows: If paying via paypal: $245 U.S. and $265 Canada
If paying via money order: $240 U.S. and $260 Canada
Note: The additional $5.00 helps cover part of the paypal fees.
Australia: $280, as it cost me around $35 to ship to that area. Europe and other parts of the world will probably be very close to the $280 figure. I have shipped to various parts of Canada, England, and even Singapore and Japan.
If interested, please post to this thread.

Hey, Bygdog!
My ride before my :07biker: 2007 ST1300A was a 1998 PC-800 "Pacific Coast". That bike came from Mother Honda with rear tip over protection for the trunk built into the design. I kept waiting :banghead: for Honda to bless the ST with the same protection. No such luck.
BUT, now...comes a rider...:woo with superior powers and designs the exact part that Maw Honda neglected!
Put me down for a set, please. Powder-coated bolts if they are available, too.

Hey Jay,
We talked at WeSToc. I had the old 1/2 in set. Put me down on this list for a newer set on this July list. BTW saw your bars in action as a rider dropped his bike but I didn't know they came with your service of helping pick the bike up:D
Tom - That was me - I was going to help Barth find his autocom lead for his helmet and was in a hurry to get going. I parked the bike, thought I put the kickstand down and got off the bike - only to discover that, in my haste, I had not got the kickstand entirely down and as a result, dropped the bike on the left side. Besides being terribly embarrassed at my carelessness, I turned around to start to pick up the bike using the correct procedure. To my surprise, the bike came up easily. I turned around to find that another rider had come to my rescue, to help me pick it up. This other rider said "it sure was a good thing that you had those tip-over bars on the bike - I'm the guy who made them!!"
What are the chances that you drop your bike and not only do the tip-over bars prevent any damage but the guy who made them really was "standing behind his product - you can't get a warranty like that from anyone (else.)
That little mishap allowed me to test the effectiveness of the tip-over bars, and as a bonus, I got to meet Jay and his lovely wife, Jennifer!!! Jay is a really neat guy. It was a very fortuitus meeting and a very happy ending. I have to tell you that I heartily endorse the product.
Believing that if a little is good, more is better - Jay, put me down for another set of the new style 9/16th size bars. Please add me to the group purchase for this next round. That should put you over the 15 person threshold. Thanks
PS - let me know final pricing with shipping and I will get it to you with Paypal.

What's the deadline to get in on this? May have to wait for another group run.:)
Well...We've reached our number, so I'd need to know something by the end of the week. However, I will probably do a few extra on my own dime that will be available on a first come first serve basis for $255 shipped inside the U.S. So, technically you could get them after the others have shipped, if you're quick enough, but you will pay a bit more.
BYGDAWG: I'm #4 on your list for the new run. I forgot to request the powder coated bolts if they are available. Thanks.

I think I'm going to scratch the powder coated bolts, as there have been some issues with them. Stainless looks nice with the black, and you could always paint them once you got them on, if you really wanted to go through the trouble to make them black.

IT looks like we have our number and then some. I will set the deadline for this group buy for this Friday the 4th of July at midnight. Anyone wanting a set for the group buy price will need to contact me before that time. After that, only the first come first serve sets will be available for $255.00 shipped inside the U.S. Also, those sets will not ship until all of the group buy sets have shipped in order to keep things fair for all of those that have committed to the group buy. Thanks for all of your support, and I'm sure you'll be very happy with the product, especially if you ever have to use them. In the meantime, I will be contacting the rest of you with Paypal and money order information.

FYI:
In regards to funds. This is where you guys can help me out. The quicker you guys get the funds in to me, the quicker I can get the steel here and start production. The quicker I start production, the quicker you will get the bars. That being said, if everyone can post funds by the first to middle of this coming week, I should be able to ship around the middle of August. This will include full production time, plus time for the bars to be powder coated and ship time for them to arrive to you. I will start a paid list tomorrow and make note of all members that have paid in full via paypal or via money order in the thread.
FYI #2:
It is VERY IMPORTANT that you include your SCREEN NAME and EXACT MAILING ADDRESS in the notes section of the paypal payment or in with a note with the money order.
If any of you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to contact me via email or PM.
Thanks to everyone for your participation. Again, I'm sure you'll be very happy with the bars, especially if you ever have to use them.

15 to 20 minute install time for most folks. It's a simple bolt on procedure. I hope to ship around mid August, but I may be able to ship earlier. I'm waiting on everyone to get their funds in. If that happens, I'll start production late next week and then they'll have to go to the coaters to be coated before I can ship them.
The powder coated bolts are no longer available. It's stainless only.

Love my tipover bars and get nothing but positive comments. Thankfully, have not put the tip over bars to the test yet--just the mere fact that they are installed keeps me upright! Definitely a premier farkle...I would buy another pair, but where to install the second set??? !!! :04biker:

Update: It appears that I will finalize production this Friday and will get the bars to the powder shop on Monday. If all goes well, I should be able to ship by the end of next week or the first of the following. I'm glad to know that I'm going to be ahead of schedule, but I didn't want to make a promise to anyone that I might not have been able to keep. As it stands though, you should have your bars by the last of July or near the first week in August. Thanks to everyone. As always, I hope you guys never need the bars, but they'll be there for you if you ever should need them.

OK fellas. I'm completely sold out! I even sold the extras that I made up on my dime. I've had a few folks contact me since I've sold out, and if there's enough interest, I may look at another group buy in August or September. I'll be starting back to work in August, and it's always busy with the students coming back during that month, so we'll have to see how things go. As it stands, I have about five or six folks wanting sets that I can't provide. If we have enough for a run of 15, we'll do another run. As for now, I just plan on getting these shipped out, and we'll see where we go from there.

That'd make about seven. I'm just about ready to ship these out, and I've got more orders coming in. I guess the word is out. You guys do know that I have to go back to work next month, right? LOL Man, how the summer flies. I hope to pick the bars up Monday from the coater and ship on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. So, you guys on the list above should have your bars by the first week in August, well ahead of schedule. :D Look for another group buy to pop up in August to gauge interest to see if we have enough folks to do another production run. I'd need about 15 folks in order to do a run.

07-28-2008, 09:40 PM
I only build these on order. To keep it from being cost prohibitive, I have to have about 15 orders to do a run. Since I build on demand, I only start once we have 15 or more confirmed and funds received. It usually takes me about four weeks from start to finish because I have to order the steel, order the bolts, wait for it to arrive, cut the steel, weld the steel, finish the steel, prep for powder, carry to the powder coater, pick up from the powder coater, package, and ship. Sometimes I finish faster, but I don't like making promises that I might not be able to keep. Group buy rates apply to all of those that get in before the deadline for the group buy. After that, it's $10.00 extra per set for however many extra sets that I make on my own dime. Those sets are first come first serve and with rising cost of steel, fuel, shipping fees, etc. etc., I normally only do about 6 or 7 extra. I hope this helps clear that up. Now...For those of you in the current group buy:
Your bars have shipped, unless I have contacted you via PM to tell you otherwise. I repeat...If you don't have a PM, your bars went out today. :hat1::hotpepper
Thanks to everyone that participated. As always, I hope you never have to use the bars, but if you ever do need them, they'll be there for you.

Hello!
I'm interest to buy your bars. The design is great and I saw it on a ST, 2 weeks ago and the look is very nice.
I dont want to use them but the testimonials bellow are very interesting.
I'm in Canada, province of Quebec. Here is my email olesquir@yahoo.ca
Thank you
Due to an overwhelming amount of PM's and emails, I have decided to throw up another group buy to see if we have enough folks interested to do another production run, as I am currently sold out of all pre-ordered bars and extra sets from the last run.

There's even a little video footage about the bars at the link available in the following thread:

Just for a kick I looked up prices for the cover on a 2006:
BODY, R. *2TN266* (BLACK/MAT BLACK) 001 $442.07
COVER, R. *NHB01* (GRAPHITE BLACK) 001 $379.58
Well worth the cost for these tip over bars, this is for one side only,
total $821.65 to replace body and cover.

Chris"

"I was doing about 40 to 45 mph when I had a disagreement with a large dog.
We both lost.
The bars did their job well (well the right side did, the left side was just loafing along in the air)."

Thanks"

"S.S.,
I installed passenger lowering brackets after the Tip Over bars to give my pillion more room. This worked great. and... The T.O.Bars have saved more than the cost of the bars and the brackets 5X over...

"I've not needed to use them since they've been on but they'd have saved me $400.00 damage back in 2005 when I laid it down gentle in a Calgary parkinglot... right smack on a cement parking curb!"

Hey folks,
I would be interested in a set and I don't even have my ST yet!
Before I commit, however, are the mounting holes already present in the frame or do holes need to be drilled?
Has anyone had any problem with the bike skating on the anti-tipover bars and getting into more trouble than the bike would without the bars?
Thanks in advance,
Dave
