View Full Version : Camping Axe / Mallet
We're tired of stomping the tent stakes into the ground. What are you all using? Would like to pack a SMALL camping axe, that can be used to drive stakes with, and also maybe chop small size firewood.

I highly recommend Gerber (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___24998) axes. I have the Combo axe with a saw that nests in the handle.

I too have a Gerber I have the smaller hatchet with a knife in the handle it looks small but it works well and fits in the bottom of the saddle bag
I use this type of mallet (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___26006) you can cut off some of the handle (smooth with file afterwards) to make it pack on the bike better.
Works well and the handle acts as a tent peg extractor when when you're breaking camp.

I use a surplus aviator's survival knife --
Heavy enough...
With a blunt-end on the handle intended to be a useful [small-task] hammer...
Packs light & small with an excellent cutting blade in protected leather case.
Ordered the Gerber Paxe..........thanks guys

my boot, if thats a pain, I use a pair of sneakers I carry sometimes, or I will grab a tool from my toolkit as make shift hammer.
Buy some good stakes, those giant yellow plastic stakes suck to get into the ground, and most of the time the top snaps off making them impossible to retrieve.

Arizona hammer (rock) usually works for me...
...but I do carry a small hatchet and a folding shovel, just in case.

We have the Gerber Folding Shovel (http://www.gerbergear.com/index.php/product/id/152). Packs quite small and it seems to be very well made.
