Starting to get more and more time on this bike. Right now it is torn down for installation of a StarCom1 intercom, GMRS, Heated Grips, and wiring the Aux lights. I have already replaced the seat with new and regeared the bike for better highway performance, and added fairing crash guards to augment the engine crash guards and a Cee Baily Tall windshield both of which are not shown in this older picture.

Just looked through the very neat thread on the dual sports. Very neat topic idea, and some neat rides. Really enjoyed the New Zealand ride by Keith_UK. BUT this Texas dude may have trouble going to work in the morning....trying to get back on my side of the road.:D
Keith, I enjoyed watching your video (again). We will have to make sure we get to the gulch when we head down there next January. Right now, we are leaning towards buying some DL 650's for our trip. Tomorrow we're heading over to visit a Suzuki dealer in Canada to check what the prices are here to see if it may be worthwhile to ship them over. If not, we'll probably look to buy bikes when we get to NZ.
Have you pinned down a time when you are heading there? Any word about whether Uncle Phil is going to join you?

I followed a KTM 950 through baja on my DL1000 and another one through the Mojave desert, In baja he couldn't lose me ( said he kept looking in his mirror and couldn't believe I was still there) and in Mojave he had to stop because of thick sand and the V made it no problem, watch out what you wish for. I even managed a minor tip-over at a rest stop I made so it now has a few character marks on the left front. :o: Pictures will have to wait till the sun comes up as I didn't pull in the drive until 9:45 tonight.

08-10-2008, 11:48 PM
Carl,
I did get a late start. :) I think this mule is going to work out just fine. I went out again today to find a little more dirt to test it in. Here is the route in a nut shell.
I rode up to Newcomb's Ranch to get breakfast and fueled up for the day. When I gassed up it took 4.45 gal for 250 miles on the OD during yesterdays ride. After breakfast I continued N on Hwy 2 and hung a left at Santa Clara Divide Rd. I followed it all the way over to where it dumped me out on Little Tujunga Canyon Rd. I hung a left and rode past the Wild Life Way Station to Foothill Blvd. and made another left. I went left again at Oro Vista Ave. which turns into Big Tujunga Canyon Rd. and back up to Newcomb's via Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Rd. for something cool to drink before heading home. I posted some pictures of the ride here (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/album.php?albumid=214). Here is a teaser:

Thanks Dan. I adjusted it last night. I have my Thermo-Bob coming in this week so I have to run the full tank dry to make it lighter when I take it off. I hate when that happens. :)
By the way, I think I cured the front end sliding out in the turns when on dirt. Seems the prior owner had the tire pressure up higher than they like to be in the dirt. I dropped the pressure down to 21 psi and seemed much better in a limited test.
Tubebender
08-13-2008, 08:32 PM
Front end sliding in dirt? No, that never happens!
In case you can't tell, I'm being facetious here. Every time I've fallen off my KLR has been a front washout. I think it's a combination of weight, high CG, and a too narrow front tire. I improved the dirt grip with knobbies at the expense of pavement grip, but in either case you do have to lower the pressures depending on terrain. I'm sure you know this, but since it was me that made sure the tires where properly inflated before you picked it up, I couldn't resist giving you an ear full! :p::);)
I think I need to get up your way, I want to ride Cleghorn and some of those other roads.

By the way, I think I cured the front end sliding out in the turns when on dirt. Gas or back brake, gas or back brake, no coastie- no coastie... slide and lean way forward, weight that skinny tire down and dig the knobs in, brake or gas, she stick. Enough gas, enough brake, the back slide good, then the front sliding no matter. The front she tries to go away, gas it maybe dab a foot. (Mumblings from Aliens in the outback)
Lower pressure more stick, but watch it if it's real rocky then, just so whamming the rocks doesn't give you a flat.
Nice bikes all.

Here is my 08 KLR, taken on a 1500 mile trip to the TN/NC area. My second KLR (first was a 92) and I love it. I got my 08 ST1300ABS at the end of January and it has 3200 miles on it. Got my 08 KLR at the end of May and I have 4300 miles on it. Great fun in the dirt, magic on twisty backroads and I even did 500 miles of superslab when I had to get back from one of my trips. Dual sport touring is a blast.
BTW, the 08 KLR is a big improvement over the older model, IMHO. Most fun bike I have had in over 40 years of riding.

The ST1100 does dirt just fine _and_ handles getting there, too. So far, none of the dirt bikes do it for me. KLR, too big for real dirt duty, Suz DRZ 400 too small for the long haul. ST, just right.

I also Found another good parts supply for ATK & Rotax. American Dirt Bikes Inc. has lots of engine & maint parts. including new tank decals for my 605 Enduro. Biggest draw back I have found is no desert fuel tanks available. Looks like I will have to do some custom fab if I want to haul extra fuel.
Looks like a guy in PHX did this clean set up.

BTW: Tom, I just put your rack on my 2001 BMW F650GSA. Your's was the only company that I could buy a rear rack from that could be made to work with the factory bags and mounts.
I had to fabricate mounting posts so the rack would work with the factory BMW Bags, but I was able to get a good fit. Ended up using a M8x1.25x50mm Button head bolt with 3x1/4" washers which are retained on the bolt with a 5/16th Palnut push nut as a retainer. The hardware store by my house didn't have any M8x1.25 backnuts, thin nut, so I bought a standard and cut it down on my mill to 1/8th inch thick using my fly cutter.

We both did, the salesman I spoke to wasn't sure, but since there wasn't anything in his documentation that said it wouldn't work, I was told I could return the rack if it didn't work. Took me a day of brainstorming to come up with a solution. I might have been able to make some other brands work, but they wanted close to $200 for the rack. I wasn't willing to be out of pocket that much if it didn't pan out. With the $99 you sell the rack for I figured it was worth the risk. I've blown nearly that much on a few RTE's.

Just made my first outing with the new Turbo City Borrego Rack. Went out for an afternoon of tooling around in the desert and shooting.
The Rack performed flawlessly.
On another note: I know people like to say how capable the ST is on dirt, where does that come from? Last Sunday I went to the same location I went shooting today, the BMW was taken apart for the rack install, and the first phase of the StarCom install. While I was able to get to the place I shoot on the ST, it wasn't fun. The front end was constantly moving around, in as little as 1 inch sand, and the short rake meant I felt every stone I crossed. The place I shoot is about 4 miles down a track littered and strewn with baseball and softball sized rocks. On the BMW I can cruise along at 25 to 35 mph. On the ST it was scary above 15 mph. A lite Dual Sport is the perfect compliment to the ST.

I have an 07' KLR650 and I like it, but needs quicker revs and less weight. I have been stripping her down alittle at time. I carry a cortech tailbag and thats it. I will drop front sprocket to 14, I want more wheelies. The Metzlers knobbies do well in most conditions even deep sugarsand, always more throttle,Grip puppies help too. I wipedout recently, which didn't hurt, this time when I lifted that Fat pig I didn't have my arm in the same spot I usually use to lift her up. At about 80% of the lift complete, my right forearm muscle and bicep muscle ripped out from the inside of my elbow. Yep that hurt like hell. I finished getting the bike up, but the last 2 months I have been on light duty trying to heal. I am ready to ride and play in the dirt. I can't lift the fat thing with one arm. Damnit!
Less weight would be nice, cause I will fall down again, I'm sure. :biker:

Here's the Dakar I just picked up. That's my friend Don (Maldos) straddling it, with me and Marc (Mandel) looking on. Picture taken at this weekend's RTE at our house.

After months of talking about it. I finally got a brand new 2009 KLR650, in the fast color BLACK. I think I'll take those green decals off they my slow me down.
Farkles on the way; Corbin Dual Platform low seat, I need that. And Cortech soft bags and tail bag. Todd (MeanST) has a set for his VFR and we tried them on the KLR. It looks like they will fit perfectly on the KLR without any hard mounts. I may make an additional heat shield for the muffler just in case. They will be here in time for SeaSToc:)

Wow, there's enough new (and old) dual sports around that SeaSTOC may become DS-STOC instead!
Nice looking KLR.

Hi John,
There was a rumor afloat during Saturday's RTE about your getting a KLR. Very cool! Nice looking bike. There are lots of us "old guys" trying out DS. It will be interesting to see how we do.
Alaksa next summer?
Congrats!

Rick,
Alaska is definitely on my to do list! But I don't know if 2009 is going to be the best time to do it. Keep me posted on your plans, I'm a maybe at this point.
Sorry I missed your BBQ! I woke up Sat AM not feeling to great and after I got back from the dealer I was really feeling sick, didn't put any miles on the KLR until Sunday.

:biker:
Later Vern
I'm running 14/45 spocket for the site that must not be named in certian locations. With the carb slide drilled out the revs go up and so does the front wheel:D:D:D Just say bye bye to the top end got the st for that

John, patience and a hair dryer or heat gun will take most of the decals off. You may have to use Goo Gone to get some of the residue off. Congrats, you have to know I was bit upset when the '09's were announced and that black one showed up. And NO I am not trading my slow red one in on a fast black one. Mine is very well farkled and I don't want to go through that process again. Again CONGRATS!!!

The funny part is the bear looks she wants to go for a ride.
Sadly the not funny part was this bear had 2 cubs inside the dumpster. She was pretty upset. My girlfriend took this shot but prior to this photo I was heading to work around 5 am. I walked right up on the bear about 4 feet from the dumpster before I saw her. She was really upset. I chased her away from the dumpster them went about my routine. Just about the time I reached my car next to the klr she started charging me. That's when I started to realize what was going on. I could hear her cubs in the dumpster. She chased me around my 4 runner about 5 times until I jumped in the passanger side and slammed the door. She ran to the drivers side as I was starting the car and charged the window. I felt really bad for the bear. She already had a radio collar on which means the park service had identified as a "trouble" bear already. I don't what happened to her nor her cubs with the exception I know the cubs got out. Simply put bears are a part of life here and we are the guests. All of this would have been avoided is someone would have simply placed the clip on the dumpster.:D

I have a 06 KLR 650 with 9K miles. It is actually for sale now that I've bought my ST1300. I'm asking $4,000 for it.
It is loaded with farkles, including the following:aluminum skid plate, engine guard, crash cage, 3-way adjustable lowering links, foot pegs, hand guards and wind deflectors, stainless brake line on front, sylvania headlight, white horse big foot shifter, pro grip 755 grips, renthal handlebars, jcwhitney trunk (took it off and put it on my ST, then it fell off on interstate...that made for a fun day), Metzler tourance dual-sport tires, 16t front sprocket, shortened kickstand, rear billet aluminum master cylinder guard, homemade highway pegs (rigid conduit and some old hand grips...ugly but they work). I also have the stock links for the suspension, plus some from trailblazer, plus a center stand that I installed and took back off, but I'd let it go with the bike.
