Does anyone know what size the steering stem nuts are? I would like to buy a spanner socket from Snap-on or Mac but I can't find the size. The Honda tool is not cheap.

I think it is a 42mm.

Do you just need one temporarily?

I have a PN 07916-3710100 which I believe will work for the ST1100/ST1300/GL1800 and several other Honda models.

I'll let you borrow it if you want to pay shipping both ways. I'll need it back before August for the Texas TechSTOC, just in case someone needs it.

Thanks for the offer Joe. :)

I would borrow the tool but I'm looking to buy one. 4 (possibly 5) out of the 7 machines we currently own have the same size.

No problem, I'm looking at the manual and you'll need this one of these anyway once you get the stem nut off.

Oddly enough, I've never noticed this before, but nut sizes aren't on the manual or not where I can see them.

No size is also the case in the NT650 & CBR manuals but the part no. for the tool is the same.

What is funny the 5th bike, the Silverwing, looked very close but when I looked at the manual the tool was a different no. (not avail. in usa) but had the size stating to use a spanner from a major tool company. That was a 81-83 manual and the size was 32mm.

Where are you all getting the Honda tools from?

Order this one from the dealer today. I wasn't able to completely confirm that it is 42mm to get one from Snap-on and the like.

Part # above. I'll have a price tomorrow. I still don't know for sure whether it is a 42mm. Add it does fit just about all of the late model Honda road bikes, including the ST1300

I also have this Honda special tool for the ST1100 steering bearing adjustment (preload) nut and locknut:

It's part of the ST1100 Steering Stem Races/Bearings R&R Tool Kit that I loan out:

The ST1100 top stem nut takes a regular 30mm socket.

Yep, that is the one. The one I ordered came in today. Retail was $59.00. I didn't pay that.

Does that work on the 1300 as well?

Yes, It is the exact tool listed in the service manual for the 1300. It fits just about all of the late model Honda street bikes. Dating back to the late eighties and it is looking like it may fit my 82 Silverwing also.

PN: 07916-3710100 or 07916-3710101(usa only) My dealer got me the 07916-3710101.

And how much can I expect to pay? Do I have to get it through a dealer??? Service Honda wants $59 for one of those...

Hi Kim. I paid $17.52 for mine from my local Honda dealer. 'Course that was 1995. :)

If it is the same size as the VTX a 1-11/16 will fit. Got one from Sears for about $20.

Depending on your relationship with your dealer it can be had for between less then $50 to the list of $59. (sorry about being vague on what I paid - my dealer doesn't really what me being exact when it comes to the discount they give me.)

...and Tom, I am going to scream - the 1 11/16 for $20. I'll bet they are the same size. Do you have a service manual for the VTX? Is the Honda PN the same? (listed earlier in the thread)

This would help save chipSTer some $s

VTX #
STEERING STEM SOCKET # 07916-3710101 OR 07916-3710100
This is for the castle nut.

ST1300 #
STEERING STEM SOCKET # 07916-3710101

Same #... It is a little tight but it works . Mine was a little buggered up from using the wrong sized pipe wrench so that may be why it was tight. A very light tap with a hammer and it went right on and off. No problems!!

I have read that a 1-5/8 can be made into the tool if you want to take the time to cut the notches out But the 1-11/16 did the job for me without that hastle.

On an ST1100 adjustment nut, Tom? I could be wrong but think you'd need a deep-well type 1-11/16" socket for a substitute for the Honda special tool... to clear the top of the steering stem.

OTOH, many folks, including dealer shop techs, just use hook-wrench/spanners and do the deed by feel, eschewing the special socket and ½" dr ratchet/torque wrench entirely.

Also, the Honda Common Service Manual has a preload procedure using a spring scale that the service manual refers to. That one basically quantifies a good mechanic's 'feel' estimate, IMHO. :)

Yes I did not think of the deep well but the one from Sears was a deep well socket with 3/4 inch drive.
