This may sound like a stupid question, but if you install a Stubel or another loud horn, what is the effect on the rider?? Obviously 139db under the faring has to go somewhere besides getting the cager's attention.

Just wondered. Would like your comments before I buy.

Thanks,

I have one installed undert he skin on my 1100 at the left tipover wing. On the interstate, with earplugs in, I can hear the horn, but not as a deafening event.

Most of us should be wearing ear plugs... now that that lecture is over.

I don't know, the wing horn was loud but I never really felt it was loud in MY ears, plugs or not.

The Helmet/ear plugs tends to help with the blast created by the horn.
Also DON'T blow it for the first time in the garage after install...(Don't ask me how I know that one:D)

Its a great safety farkle that was worth every penny!

I'm using a set of full sized air horns with the trumpets right at the oem horn openings. VERY LOUD.

I have accidentally hit the horn switch and it startled me. It got my attention!

Otherwise, in normal use it is loud of course but at least it's expected.

The effect on the rider is about the same as on the cager if you hit the button by accident LOL. If you are talking about hearing damage, it's not an issue it's loud but how often and for how long do you use it? Wind noise with no ear plugs over the long haul is going to get you.

Motors:

My Stebel horn seems to be about as loud at 70 mph --no ear plugs-- as the stock horn was while the bike was sitting still. No dB meter; just what I hear.

One side affect is the cage swerves the other way and doesn't whack into you.

The only bad effect I had with the STebel was when making a tight left hand u-turn with a tank bag mounted - Yikes!

Been there, done that...

My twin Stebels do quite well at telling BDCs where I'm at. Had a clown blow through a red light yesterday as I was getting ready to make my left. :toot1::toot1: It got his attention! :o4:

I saw him in plenty of time, so there wasn't any real danger, but it pisses me off when people think they are the only ones on the road!

Bigger effect: Do above, but in enclosed airport parking lot, with lots of people around. DAMHIKT. :o:

I have 2 FIAMM horns inside the fairing between the headlight and the fork tubes. They sort of blast down on the inside of the fairing, probably reflecting a lot of sound straight up at me. Still it doesn't sound very loud to me; I always wear earplugs so the sound is clearly there, but never uncomfortably so.

I second that. I don't blow my horn a lot and I usually ride with ear plugs, but I've blown it without earplugs and it's not defining "outside of the garage".

The only problem I have with mine is once in a while it goes off when I am turning off the turn signal, just can't figure that out the wiring all seems good.........hmmmmmmm.

High decibels are not the only concern in regards to hearing protection. Duration of exposure plays a very big part. For the brief periods which we blow our own horns (on the bike, not here in the forum), the durations are so short that the effect is not worrisome.:PoPoST1:
