Hey, anyone from CA going to this event or am I going to have to drive to Yuma or Phoenix to hook up with the AZ guys?

Let me know your plans for camping/hotels and I'll try to decide how I'm going to do this trip. I know I'll be leaving CA on the morning of the 7th so I can be on 191 on the 8th.

Guess I'll need to arrange accomidations for the 7th, 8th and 9th. Not definite on the 9th, might just book home after lunch. Worked last year riding with Bob (AzDesertRider).

Sorry Dana, but I'm going to have to pass this year! After WeSTOC and then taking the wife to Lompoc last weekend, I'm booked until September 13th with my son's wedding...too many things to get done before then. :(

Ride safe Dana!!!

I'll ride back to SoCal with ya. I'm going straight to Hanagan Meadows from OH and then to SoCal from AZ.

Sorry.....would love to but strapped for cash with school coming up.

If 666 wasn't my ride, I might do the Sierra ride, too. :D

Gotta say, tho, the ride to/from 666 is better for me than the flat, long drag across Nevada to get to Mammoth. Also, US-191 has _low_ traffic.

Anyhoo, just a reminder, I need to let the folks at Hannagan Meadow know how many to expect for lunch on 8-9-08. If ya haven't signed up yet, please do.

Looks like yer on your own till you hit Yuma.
I'm heading out on Friday & Camping, I think Tom is too.

Well Dana, maybe I will ride with you from SoCal. I just got off the phone with her and she says she can handle the heat, so..... that means a ride to Sandyago and then to Hanagan and back to OB. Then back to OH!!! I'll probably get to OB the 6th, rest a couple of days and then head out. Since you live east of OB, I guess we'll meet you somewhere. Let me know when and where.

I'm planning to leave Friday and camp. too. I'll leave early enough to beat the heat and then figure out where to camp later. I'm going to ride at least part of the 666 on 8808:)

I was considering trying to hook up with Tom and Bob in Yuma, but they aren't riding until "early Friday" in some attempt to beat the heat. It's 2 1/2 hours from El Cajon to Yuma so that means Oh dark 30 for a take off (undetermined time). I was thinking about leaving Thursday and then maybe get a hotel room Safford or Show Low. That way I could at least try and hook up with George for a ride along 191 on the 8th.

The ride from Yuma to Safford is 5 1/2 hours and the ride from Yuma to Show Low is 6 hours. Both of those routes are mostly superslab, ok, actually the Show Low route is 1/2 superslab (I8) the rest us Hwy 60.

Your plan to arrive on the 6th in OB and then rest a couple of days means leaving on the 8th or later. Not consistent unless your only goal is to attend the RTE.

Bob and Tom, if you can expand on your plans it might help me to decide what I want to do.

Mac, how flexable are your plans?

About like a rubber band. I may get to OB even earlier. I can leave anytime, let me know when you want to leave and where and when to meet. Carole is fairly flexible so no big deal. I just did that OB to Yuma run this week and it was cold until I got to Ocotilla. I mean 54 degrees cold. I left Carole's at 4:30 and pulled into Yuma(exit 12) at 6:45. That includes a gas stop! I've run 60 and love that stretch through Salt River Canyon! Did it once on a Wing and once on the ST.

Dana and Mac,
I like riding 66 (191) south to north; so I'd recommend Clifton AZ for your nights stay...

BT,
There are some horse campgrounds as you ride north out of Clifton that might work for you if you're camping... the campground/s don't show that I can find; but, I remember seeing one on the right and one on the left the last time I rode the route...
You'd be stopping in the middle of the north south ride at that point...

Mark

Mac, do you and Carole have any plans to camp? I say we head to Show Low, I intend to ride 191 both directions anyway so it doen't matter where we stay, that way I get to ride HWY 60 twice.

I like your idea of a 0430 launch. I'll PM you my address and you can just stop by my place and pick me up. I'm less than a block off the freeway exit on 2nd St. in El Cajon.

I'd still like to leave on the 7th though. Big Tom and Bob will just have to catch up.

I am camping, and we can leave anytime. I will be pulling a trailer since I'll be two up, but it doesnt' slow me down much, just have to stop for gas every 200 miles.

My loose plan (pending a chat with Bob) is to go Friday early am and get up on the 191 to spend the night. I now have a stove and a coffee pot, I'm good to go! I'm going to park it on National Forest land some place (free is better than cheep).

Hey Tom, would you please post that list of stuff required for camping in the Nat Forest? We talked about it at breakfast the other morning. I remember a bucket, shovel, TP, but don't remember the rest. Thanks.

New knowledge for me, an ax, shovel, and water bucket are necessary camping items when camping on National Forest lands. I've never had'em with, never been questioned, but I've never built a fire, either.

I carry a shovel with a built in saw.. it would be a stretch but it *could* be used as an ax... does a saddle bag count as a bucket?

Couple of nights of Forest camping (free) would be great. Question, are there camping facilities at Hanigan?

Dana, what time you leaving on the 7th?

motomac
07-24-2008, 04:23 PM
Thanks Bob, I don't imagine fires are allowed, but I normally carry a hatchet, shovel, and bow saw. Pots and pans will double as a bucket.

BigTom
07-24-2008, 05:43 PM
I bought a rip snorting $5.00 folding shovel today. Gots the old hatchet, and looked at the Wally World $1.50 bucket, looks like my sleeping bag will fit right in it, will probably carry it. I think it will not hurt my packing ability, at least not much...

I'm curious... why do you guys need a shovel and hatchet? I never carry that kind of heavy stuff bike camping. And I never, or rarely use a campfire... Got a stove instead. Most National Forests don't allow open fires.

If you need to dig a hole to poop in, or bury left-overs I use one of these...

Ya know, I have not found any printed rules regarding the ax & bucket requirement. Most of the rules I have found are just good ole common sense type rules

http://www.wmonline.com/attract/RULESASF.HTM

Also called the

USDA Forest Service

Albuquerque, NM 87102
PHONE:
(505) 842-3292

Hit option 2 for fire restrictions in the east AZ Nat Forest. The ranger I talked to had never heard of the Shovel, Ax & Bucket rule. she asked the other rangers in the office & they too had not heard of this requirement. They did advise that all fires & coals must be fully extinguished before leaving camp.

How about I let you guys carry all the hatches, buckets, axes, bow saws and I'll just bring my tent and sleeping bag. Maybe I'll bring along some extra line, that could be my contribution to the trip. I'll ask Mac to carry it in his trailer though.. hehe

Fred, it sure would be fun to have you along. I know the bears would have fun with you and leave me alone. I know you do your best to avoid the discomfort of the heat, other wise I'd have been pestering you a long time ago to come along. I know you'd love 191 and Hannagan Meadow. The problem is by the time the desert is cool enough to suit you, they have 3 foot of snow at Hannagan Meadow.

Bob, I was considering leaving early to beat the heat, but if I'm riding with Mac and Carole I have to coordinate with others. Maybe if I left late enough on the 7th (actually very early on the 8th, and you guys left early enough on the 8th we could make it all work out?

Trying to remember if AZ and CA are still in the same time zone, I don't think so.... Hummm.... Ok, they are in the same time zone for now GMT-7hrs.

So if we left El Cajon at 1:30am, we'd be in Yuma at 3:00am. So when you said you wanted to leave early on the 8th, is that what you had in mind guys? If not, let me know what you did mean. I'm sure we can work this out. I'm not nuts about driving in temps at 110 or above. Until then I'm pretty happy with my camelback and evaporative vest.

This sign is on the east end of Control Road in Tonto National Forest, just south of Pine, AZ.

The horse camps may not require these items as they are "improved" sights. Also, I think the section along US-191 is Apache Sitgraves National Forest. Can't imagine the rule change that much, tho. (?)

I gots DEET, we can keep those stinking insects at bay...

So, I'm thinking camping the night of the 8th somewhere in the Egar area, maybe able to hook up with Dana and Mac for breakfast on Saturday? That's about what I had in mind, Yuma to Springerville via 666 on Friday the 8th. What think you, Bob?

Gunnar and I are headed east on Thursday. I'm thinking 2-lane all the way (as much as possible, anyway.) 2 good days of riding _before_ lunch on Saturday. Then, all day Sunday to get home.

It's good to...

GO RIDE!!

Motomac and I rode the 666 today from Springerville south about 100 miles and then back north today. We didn't see any ST, but when we stopped in Hannagan Meadow on the North bound ride, we met Ed Grant who was staying there at the lodge. He's riding his Vstrom unless I'm mistaken. Don't know where all the STs are at.

Rained cats and dogs on us starting at Hannagan Meadow (north bound trip). Temperatures ranged from 72 to 55 degrees. So cold and wet was not a good combination for me.

Well, I'm home! Left Mac and Carole at the I10/I8 intersection. Carole said she had enough riding for one day. Between Clifton and Safford we rode though the hardest rain I've ever ridden in. I think my gear spent more time wet than dry today. Max temp encountered on the way home was 100 degrees in Gila Bend and Yuma. So I really beat the heat this trip. According to MS S&T the ride home was 641 miles. I'm tired as hell and I'm going to bed. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

I got home about 1:20 am CDT this morning. A bit tired but otherwise in fine shape. Took about 10 hours. I thought the TxDPS wanted to talk to me just east of Post, Tx but when I pulled over the trooper did a u-turn across the median. (I was only doing 3 over - honest) :) The old V-Strom never missed a beat. :PoPoST1:
