View Full Version : Should I bother with TWO airhorns (FIAMM and Stebel) ?

I have a compressor with dual FIAMM trumpets already installed on my ST1100 and I just bought a Stebel. I got the Stebel because it has a lower, little more car-like (and possibly slightly louder) sound and wanted to replace the FIAMM setup.
I am now considering just adding the Stebel to the FIAMM noise.
Should I go through the trouble of trying to squeeze the Stebel in and figure out the extra wiring? Or would the gain be minimal? The Stebel by itself already yields 139 dB of noise, how much would the loud but squeeky FIAMMS help?

I saw an ST11 at WeSTOC that had a Stebel mounted at the side of the topcase mounting bracket at the rear. It may have had one on each side, I didn't get a real good look at it.

Pretbek: I'm confused a little by your comments.
Having had dual FIAMM horns on my 1100 for many years, I can say unequivocally that they are not "squeeky" by any means. They sound off like a huge Cadillac. The Stebel on the other hand, is a much higher pitch horn array, described fairly accurately as sounding like a Ferrari (more Euro sounding)
I'm wondering if you had installed 2- "high" note FIAMMs. When installing FIAMMs in a dual configuration, one must make sure to get 1-"high" and 1-"low", or yes, I can imagine they would sound rather...uh, "funny"
Get the "low" tone before writing off the FIAMMs though. I have a Stebel on my 1300, and while loud, it doesn't get the attention-getting "a Caddy is about to eat me" responses from BDCs like I got with my FIAMMs. I am seriously considering replacing the Stebel...soon.
Running them both would be interesting though. But to find room for all 3 horns, eh? Let us know how you fare with the project, would you?
I have a set of full sized dual trumpet air horns on my ST1300. They are just a bit louder than the Stebel.

One Stebel is really loud. But I'm planning on adding two to my 1300. When some bimbo tries to change lanes on me, (like the one on the way to work today) I'm going to make Dang sure she hears me next time.
Ray, I suspect you had the electric Fiamm horns. I think Dennis has a Fiamm AIR horn. I had a pair of those mounted to a car many years ago, and they are very high pitched. Even higher than the Stebel, if my memory is correct.

No, I don't have the electric Fiamm horns. I have full sized dual trumpet air horns. They are about the same pitch as the Stebel, just a bit louder.

I must have different trumpets, because mine are distinctly higher pitched than the Stebel. They are loud, but not enough car-like (just like our silhouette).
When I blasted a BDC at 6 feet (distance from the quickly approaching rear quarter panel to her non-engaged brain), she didn't react at first, because I didn't sound like a car warning, I guess. When another car chimed in with his -much quieter- horn, she reacted immediately.

I replaced my Fiamm's Hi/Lo with a Stebel, it's loud, but I like the sound of the Fiamm's, I installed the Steibel on the right side of my ST1100 and I had the Fiamm's in the stock location and the 2nd horn I mounted on the lower triple clamp between the forks,I'm going to put 2 Fiamm Lo's back on my bike to balance out the sound.

+1 to Marcus. The Stebel's are pretty high pitched. On my 1100, I had a Fiamm low tone horn in place of the stock one in addition to the Stebel. I'll have to see if I can fit that on the 1300, too.

An end to the Stebel vs. Fiamm argument, once and for all--with a diligent internet search, you should be able to find a good train locomotive horn, pulling the monster compressor it requires on a permanently-attached trailer! There's a log-truck driver who regularly passes through my current bridge project, and when he hits his horn button to "flirt" with the cute flagger girls, it sounds like the coal trains we had back in Colorado. Loud enough to get everyone's attention within a mile or two.
