choice at all, Steve has done a lot
on the site especially with getting a
couple very successful Eastern events going.
Please congratulate him for
being the
July 2008
Member Of The Month.
From Steve himself:
First I have to say that I was surprised and honored to be selected as
Member of the month.
I would like to thank all the Moderators and members that selected me. I do
what I do because I enjoy riding with likeminded riders. I have attended
several smaller STOC events as well as NESTOC. I have also attended the
MLR the last 2 years. I like the smaller events because you get to know the
other members a bit more. They are just a bit more intimate.
Any way a bit about me, I joined the USAF in 1974 and started riding while I
was in. I didn't own my own bike for some time, but as I lived in base housing
one of my friends left his Yamaha 500 at my house and gave me the keys.
Well that was when the bug bit me.
But with young children and the Air Force I didn't get to do too much riding.
In the early 80’s I got a used Yamaha Maxim 700. A fun bike rode it for a
couple of years and totaled it. I replaced it with a 1986 Super Magna V45. I
tooled around on that for a few years before I wrecked it too; however I
resurrected it from the grave and sold it and bought a 1986 Honda Shadow.
My local bike mechanic at the time found me a 1984 V65 Magna so I was
now the owner of 2 bikes. So I am getting to where I got into Sport Touring
and Long Distance Riding.
Our first long tour was to the Honda Hoot, I had my wife on the back of the
V65 and the T-Bag strapped to the sissy bar, leather saddle bags and off we
went. The trip down was nice BRP. We did a couple of the organized rides at
the Hoot, during a 300 mile ride we stopped at a rest stop and there at the
gas pump is a beautiful red bike with hard bags and a top box. So I go over
to the girls riding it and ask what it is. It was an ST1100. I had never seen a
bike like that (other than a wing). The trip home was the clincher that V65
seat is not very comfortable and after a marathon 764 mile ride home my
wife did not want to get back on that bike.
It was at that point I started looking for a touring bike. This was in 2001; I
did a lot of reading and read that the ST1300 would be coming to the US in
2003. At the 2002 Motorcycle show I got to sit on one. When the dealer
finally got one in I convinced him I was a serious buyer and they let us test
ride the 03. That was it now I am hooked. I love this bike and the community
of riders I have come to know because of it, and the ST Owners site. I did
my first Iron Butt ride an SS1K last year summer of 2007.
I thank you all for selecting me it is truly an honor to be associated with
such a fine group of people. I have made some great friendships through this
site and look forward to making many more.
