George thought it would be a good idea to start a thread outside of the main posting so we could easily keep in touch.

I'll start by asking where everyone might want to meet for the exchange or join the ride.

Adam,
Do you want to want to ride with me to Newcombs? I'll transfer the "Log" somewhere down the road to San Diego?

STony G

I was just thinking that maybe we could meet the San Diego riders in Julian for some "PIE" and transfer the "log" to them. By then it would be around 4pm ish.

I attached a S&T's map. I don't know how to paste a picture of the map.

Sounds good to me. My ability to go will be questionable until I know the exact date and whether finances and time permits said trip. (But I'm pretty stubborn when I decide I want to do something......and I really, really want to get in on this. :D)

There is another thread somewhere, I didn't see it. Can you let me know where?

Do you know how to insert a thumb nail of a map?

Route:
Bakersfield
Newcombs Ranch
San Bernadino
San Diego
Yuma
Pheonix

Timing will be important to me, too. I'll do all or most of this leg _if_ I'm in the area. I'm headed east after TentSTOC in September so might be in MO/IL/IN when it comes thru.

Gonna watch the main thread and hook up wherever.

The hunt for Derek's courier bag is on, too. Adam C. says they're looking.

klackey. if you can pick up from the sacramento folks on the northern end of bakersfield or beyond i can pick up from you on the southern end or around gorman if you like. i can then run it over to newcombes ranch. what say ye.

thanks George. I really want to be a part of this, so, I'm going to vote in.

edit:
ok, so at this point, we don't know for sure when to expect the log book into Bakersfield?
also, is Klackey riding from Bakersfield up to Sacramento and back down again, or did he move and I didn't know about it?
if we can get a firm date on the arrival into Bakersfield, this is far enough out that I could take the time off from work if need be to do it.

edit again:
I can meet Beatlejuice in Gorman or Frazier, and if Ron (Hogslayer) is around, I can buy him the lunch I owe him...

this just sounds so cool. Has it ever been done before by a motorcycle community?

I am probably the furthest south, I'd be happy to meet whoever at Julian for a hand off, just need to know where and how. I"m sure there will be other souther California riders that will probably want to participate. We have a pretty regular riding crew here and we get together often.

I'll make arrangements with BigTom and AzDesertRider to get it to Yuma, either me taking it to them or them meeting me half way, what ever they desire. After that they will be making arrangements to move it from Yuma to Phoenix.

Actually Tom, STonyG was acting on a suggestion of mine. The main thread has so many posts in it and things are getting scattered across multiple pages it's hard to keep track of who said they would do what. I figured a sub forum in the CA section would be less unwieldy and allow for planning for the section of the ride that we intend to cover.

Not trying to keep the AZ folks out of the discussion, as a matter of fact I made sure to include you and Bob in the discussion since you had both offered to cover the Yuma to Phoenix leg.

Cheers!

It appears that the Pony Express is really on the move! So, I guess that we might want to get our act together for our leg. This is what I know (be nice) right now…
1) Mr. Beatlejuice will pick up the “bag’ in Bakersfield and deliver it to Newcomb’s Ranch.
2) I, we or someone will take it to the San Diego area. I had a thought; maybe we could get to Coronado and get a picture with Island Cop and their ST1300P for a photo op.
3) Hand off to whoever wants to take the bag.

Just a thought.

I have the leg from San Diego to Yuma. You might want to rethink heading to Coronado though, Island Cop is no longer a motor officer so may not be able to provide you with the photo op you're suggesting. Did Island Cop answer up to the Pony Express thread?

Anyway, the first thought was to make a hand off in Julian and I'd meet you there. I don't so much care where we meet, I just need to know where that is, because many SoCal riders have expressed an interest in participating I need to get them organized.

That is one long "leg" San Diego to Yuma . Poor attempt at humor.

I was going to send a message to Island Cop to see if he would or could set up something.

Anyway, unless the "many SoCal" riders want to make any route changes...Julian it is. Are you planning to ride to Yuma right after the "rider switch" or, do you plan on leaving the next morning. I thought I would ride with the bag and then ride over to Lake Havasu, I have a friend who has a house over there. If you or anyone else is interested, your more then welcome...I just need to know before hand.

That will largely depend on what day of the week it arrives here and what arrangements I can make with AzDesertRider and BigTom in Yuma. They were going to take care of the Yuma to Phoenix leg. I don't have a clue what arrangements they have made with the Phoenix crowd. But that will be the end of "leg 39, Bakersfield to Phoenix". I don't believe the bag is going to make it's way over to Lake Havasu, it seems as thought the route is going to be significantly south of there.

I'm glad we're getting this thrashed out before the bag reaches us. If Island Cop wants to participate, have him let me know, either in this thread or in a PM, and we'll get as much accomplished as possible. I know there's going to be a bit of a group ride and photo op at the very least.

I am hoping that our leg can be handled over the weekend. Bakersfield to Julian on Saturday or Friday...I need a day off anyway. Julian to Yuma on Saturday or Sunday.

PM sent to Island Cop. And asked him to reply to us.

Really. I don't think there will be much problem with Bob and I (maybe John, too). We'll Git 'er dun:)

Hey Tom, I was going to deliver it to you guys. Figured a pizza at Da Boyz was my prize for delivering to you. How you get it to Phoenix is your problem (and leg).

What, you want me and the SoCal boys to just hand it over in Julian from the northern guys?

That don't seem right. :D

It appears that another war between the states is in the works .

I think in all fairness, the riders from SoCal and the riders from Arizona meet at the border of these 2 great states for the exchange. The exchange spot should be in a public place, got to keep this on the up and up you know :D.

Dan...did you decide to leave the same day the log is delivered, or, will you leave the next morning?

I asked Island Copp what would be the chances of getting a picture of the bag/log with the Coronado ST1300P and this is his reply...

"If you can give me a heads up on when you'll be there, I can make an attempt. If you were hoping for a pic with me and the ST1300's, that'll be a little trickier, since I work nights now and am not on the bike. Not impossible, just trickier. If you wanted a pic of one (or both) Coronado motor officers and the ST1300, that's easier if you will be in the area M-F, 6-3p. Let me know what your timing looks like, and we'll see what we can throw together. I'm happy to make the attempt...

Dave"

We have time to think/plan this if the "Leg 39" riders are interested. If it can't be done...no hair of my head, cause there isn't any :D.

just thought i would just chime in here. time and dates are a little hard to pin down right now. riders could be delayed by many things, weather, time bag is transfered, mech failure etc. etc.
if i remember right i believe i saw that it (the transfer) could even be delayed so that it would be more convenient for riders to participate. someone correct me if im wrong. im not saying its ok to hang onto the bag for a week but a day is not a poblem. again correct me if im wrong.

Truthfully I haven't read the entire Pony Express thread, it's gotten too long and I just couldn't care about a lot of that chat.

I think you have it right though. It's been in it's current location for 4 days straight. Probably waiting for a weekend or something so the guy can take the time to ride. I'm not worried about some delay, if the organizer of the event is not satisfied with our planning, he's monitoring this forum so I expect he will chime in. I think that when it gets to our leg, the expectation is to keep it moving as best we can, but to cover the volunteered carriers to the best of our ability and to include as many riders as possible. I didn't think it was a speed contest, just the opposite, since it's designed to be a charity ride/event, it should go for as long as possible as long as it's keeping people involved and continues to raise money and awareness to the cause. The one exception to that rule is in the northern states where they were hoping to get it through while the riding season is still reasonable. The remnants of Ike might be the cause of the current delay, I have no idea.

I only did a few, and mostly as accompanying rider. I did to and from Cheyenne, WY and to St. Paul alone, so only 3.

I agree with Adam, we should try to have the highest rider count. That's a challenge to all the other legs. High so far has been 5 riders at Helena, MT, unless I missed something earlier. Coulda been more at Madison, WI (in conjunction with WiSTOC) but Scout and I waited til Sunday, after the event, to hit the capitol. As it was, about 20 folks signed the log at Spring Green.

Since Dana won't let me go to Julian for Pie, maybe we could schedule a Ride and Eat for Eastern AZ on the way to Phoenix? I'll bet we could get Don and George (though his 27 legs might let him out) and Petar and who knows who to participate if there was food involved...

Hummmm.... maybe I didn't think this thing through. Tom, how about you come to Julian, have some pie and escort me to Yuma, you know, just to make sure the bag gets there safe and sound and all?

Who knows, maybe we can find some unique way of getting it there...

So. I was sitting in the bathroom when this brain flash came to me, take it for what it's worth:)

How about we take the bag from Yuma to Phoenix via Kingman? I'm thinking George might like his chance to ride down Andy Devine Blvd with the vest and bag. Another Big Tom shortcut:)

So. That's not all of it. How about most mileage for a leg of this thing? Bakersfield to Phoenix via SandyAgo and Yuma and Los Angeles and Kingman is going to make for some pretty serious mileage:)

How about:
most riders, leg
most mileage, leg
most rider mileage, leg?

Total mileage, most riders and most rider miles? What do you think?

looks like this on MapQuest.
About 812 miles.

edit:
I have another idea. How about multiple routes? Since so many guys from SoCal are going, it might be kinda cool to add some other stops to the route. Of course, we couldn't take the logbook on alternate routes, but, maybe we could add another log book? Kind of like a "spur service".

Just a thought.

edited route with spur service
and I would be willing to do the Gorman to Kingman leg.
This could give us a total leg of:
Trip distance: 1211.53 miles Time: 19 hrs 30 mins

ok, so, if we REALLY want to get bold about this, I have another idea. Since there is no time limit to this, we can pretty much zig zag all we want. So, if we want to get some kind of record, I have another idea.
What if we plotted a course that allowed the riders on each leg of this course to carry the items in two directions? It can be done.

This is still just thinking, but, what if say a rider left Bakersfield, and passed the package to another rider in Gorman. The rider from Bakersfield then makes his way to Victorville. He waits for a bit for a rider to return the package, and takes it to Barstow, then hands it off.

The rider that picked up the package in Gorman would ride to say Los Angeles, and hand off to the next rider. Then he would head to Riverside.

The rider that picked up in LA could ride to San Diego, and hand off, or ride to Riverside and handoff. Its weird here because it is a triangle.

Regardless, someone has to ride to Riverside, to hand off to the rider originating from Gorman. After the handoff, he goes home.

Now the Gorman/LA/Riverside rider rides to Victorville, and hands off to the Bakersfield/Gorman/Barstow rider.

See where I am going?

Once it is in Barstow, the loop gets really big. So, we need someone to take it to Needles, and pass off, or do another zig zag from Barstow thru Indio, El Centro to Yuma, up to Blythe, to Needles, to Kingman, to Phoenix.
It'd be one hell of a route..

I don't think getting this one done is an issue really, is it?

I'm not sure I support the idea of running it all over the place (between legs), but at the same time, it was my understanding that the concept was to involve as many riders and to increase awareness and generate some support for the charity. Zooming it across the nation at the fastest speed possible won't accomplish that.

Truthfully I'm torn between the simple plan that we had outlined before and the event that mshihrar is suggesting. I'm not a fan of overly complicated and what he's proposing strikes me as being complicated to coordinate with lots of room for miscommunication. With that said though, it certainly accomplishes the goal as I understand it for the purpose of this event.

I think more discussion of the SoCal crowd is in order.

I think I may have asked this before, but, why don't we just make a list of who wants to carry the log and where they would like to go and have a picture taken. And/or make a list of places we want to visit. We all know that there are a million places here in So Cal.

Once a list is finalized, then we could create a map.

What say the "Leg 39" riders?

If a list is created, can anyone edit the list?

How about splitting California into two (or even three!) states so there's more reason to stay in the area longer. I know there's folks who are actually pushing for this, why not give'em a _real_ reason. :D

Well, I've already signed up for the Julian to Yuma section. That was my plan before. Mostly because the guys from up north suggested we meet in Julian. I was going to just take it to Yuma from there.

In the process of taking it to Yuma, I was going to put out a call to all San Diego area riders who would like to accompany me to meet me in Julian for some pie. Figured we'd get a nice group shot and sign the log and away we'd go. My plan didn't go any further than that.

:toot1:

So who all in the San Diego area would like to join me on this section of the leg?

Isn't seaSTOC in about a month...it looks like it may show up at about the same time :D.

I just convinced my boss to let me make a field trip to one of our divisions in Phoenix at just about the same time the "Log" will be there. Can you believe it. Going to try and get some gas money outta this :D.

dteel
09-30-2008, 01:40 PM
Yeah, I can believe it, sure wouldn't hurt to let your company pay for a bit of gas, especially if you can do so and not have to fabricate the truth as you go along. You will have to be sure to coordinate any trip to Phoenix with BigTom and AzDesertRider in Yuma as that is where they will begin the last part of leg 39 to Phoenix. All in all, I think this is going to be a pretty circuitous route considering that leg 39 is Bakersfield to Phoenix. We're not doing a straight line by any means. I'm looking forward to riding with you Stony and George, now maybe we need to see if Mac will be in town and if John_Diego, MeanST and other SD riders are interested in participating.

I think it was pretty much settled in posts 25-28. The Bakersfield group would pass it on the the LA group at Newcombs Ranch. The LA group would pass it to the San Diego Group at Julian. The San Diego Group would take it to the Yuma group in Yuma, AZ and they would take it to Phoenix.

Now if anyone had any other idea of how it was going to travel, now would be a good time to pipe in.

Other wise try to coordinate with the respective group, dare I say it, leaders.

Beatlejuice was the first to pipe up for the Bakersfield group so if he can coordinate to get it from Klacky and bring it to Newcombs Ranch. Beatlejuice, did Klacky communicate with you off line? I don't see any posts by him in this thread other than the one post saying he's in, do you know how it's getting from Sacramento to Bakersfield?

StonyG was the first to pipe up for the LA group so I consider him the leader of that group. Everyone that wants to ride from Newcombs Ranch to Julian contact StonyG.

Now, I'm going to lead the group from Julian to Yuma. Anyone that wants to participate in the San Diego to Yuma leg, please send me a PM or post in this thread.

I will be handing it over to either Big Tom or AzDesertRider in Yuma, so I'll make sure they are ready to receive the package.

How about that for some preliminary planning?

Any words of dissent? Speak now or....

Lets get this going guys!

To all who want to come along here is the schedule I have come up with…. Any suggestions are welcome…….

Saturday the 15th :
Leave Bakersfield AT 1:45pm from the Chevron Station at the Olive Drive exit off freeway 99. The station is on the west side of the freeway. Ride to the handoff at Mefford field by 3:00. Then tuck tail and return home to Bakersfield.
Might come back on 65 then take the back road up through Glennville and back down to Bakersfield. Most likely this will just be a super slab trip up and back. 125 miles round trip.

Sunday the 16th:
Leave Bakersfield AT 8:00am from the Dennys on White Lane just off the 99 on the east side. Ride up to the meeting place by 9:00 in Lebec and have breakfast with Beatljuice and crew at Big Jons (see post #119)for the hand off. At this point I am thinking I will join Beatljuice and ride up to the ranch to meet up with the SoCal group. Then just make my way home by whatever way looks fastest or fun depending on time and mood.

If anyone wants to start the ride out of town with me just post or PM me so I can know how many people to look/ wait for at the meet up points.

Road Closures: Fire and High Wind

It appears that all the direct roads from Bakersfield, 5, 210 & 405, are closed due to the Sylmar fires.

I just checked the weather for Newcombs and they are under a severe weather alert...high winds and high fire alert. ACH is not closed. I'll give Newcombs Ranch a call this morning and get Suzi's take on what's happening up there.

So I guess I'm asking what would the Leg 39 riders want to do?

I'll send a PM, to the people who have confirmed, with my cell information.

Tony:

We could always go the "back way" through Wrightwood, down the mountain and through the twisties, then back up to Newcomb's. That should take about two hours if we hustle.

Either way, I'll see everyone at Bert's at 10 a.m.

So Cal is, once again, going up in flames.
According to the DOT post, there are available detours on our route.
From the 5 fwy south of Lebac through Santa Clarita, and then from the 5 fwy to the 210 fwy on the way to Newcombs, there should be detours available for such a busy fwy.
But we really won't know til the fires die down a bit overnight.
The winds are supposed to diminish on sunday.
I'll check in here later this evening (saturday).

PS: Byron and his KLR may be the only way for the Bag to get through.:D

Hey, how'd it get here so fast :)...............

...............as for a 11/23 handoff in Julian, I'll be ready and waiting so just post or PM me the ETA. It's going to work out perfectly. I had already planed on taking off the week of the 24th, so any day that week will work out for a handoff to the AZ boys. Hey, John Diego (or anyone else) are you in for a ride to AZ?

Keep me in the loop. We still planning a Yuma turn over??

As far as I now the the call was still a Yuma handoff

The plan is still Yuma...... just need to set up a exact ETA for the handoff and we can't confirm that until we get an exact ETA for the Julian handoff.

I can ride with it all the way to Phoenix. You going all the way George?

Depends on the as to the time of the handoff in Julian.....the earlier the better.

I'll do my best to get there on time. I'll be coming up the 138 to the 2 at around 12:30........

Well, are we still on for the 11/23 handoff in :pie1:country? Do we have an estimated time of arrival? SDGeorge

Preliminary results should be in about an hour, I'd think.

Tom, ya don't need to _remove_ the carbs, just pull out of the boots and lift'em up. I used a ratcheting tie down over a garage rafter to lift'em up a few inches. That give enuff lee-way to remove the rubber blanket and tighten the clamps. Try that first. Should get ya back on the road quick.

Keep us poSTed.

BTW, ya don't HAVE to ride an ST. Borrow a bike from Bob or Ray for Sunday if worse comes to worse.

Gladly......remember, you can always visit before 2011, too. :D

I also want to say thanks for starting this. I can't tell you how many "Ooo's" and "Wow's" I get when I tell people about it. This is definitely one of those things that don't come along often and the opportunity to participate is priceless. Thanks, Tankereng.

Hey there...
Not sure I'm posting this in the right place...but, there was a great turnout for the Pony Express transfer today. Am enclosing pictures of all who attended, the vest, the official signing of the banner, and a shot of all (except me, who was taking pictures of everyone else!) Adam did a great pic of a "pony" on an ST to mark today's meet. He also got conned into adding Toto to the sign on the back of my trike because he expressed disappointed not to see the dog there with Dorothy, lion, tinman, and scarecrow. I was thrilled with the addition! The guys spent some time admiring the new BMW that drove in.
George took off for Phoenix to get the photo in front of the Capital, and if no one was there to pick it up he was returning home to Kingman with it until the connection could be made. THANKS GEORGE...and to all were there today.

Good meet up today in Santa Ysabel. Added notes to ...??? Some other thread.

Anyway, today's pics are here (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/album.php?albumid=486).

After stopping in Julian, Bob and Tom took me and SD George on a fine ride down 79 and across 8 to the Golden Acorn Casino. Figure they call it that cause anyone who gambles is a real squirrel. They don't build those places based on _winners!_ :D

SD George headed for, uh, SD and we three continued on to Yuma. From there, I finished leg 39 at the Arizona Capital building, turned over the package to Bryon (AZ ST.)

I still need to update the "where is it now" thread.

Good 900 mile weekend for me, always great to hook up with the SoCal crew. To bad Dana couldn't be there, but...

Family First!

Same goes for Raven, who really wanted some of the P.E. action. There's always next year, folks.

Participating in the P.E. was a real honor and a kick in the butt (can I say ?). Seeing friends, I haven't seen in years and meeting new ones, way too cool. Thanks for the memories...and the PIE.

I believe leg 39 3/4 had set a new daylight record...

9 ST's sitting in a parking lot, on a mountain with great roads...on a gorgeous day. AND...we were one of the last people at Newcombs.:D

BTW.
The manager of Newcombs would like some pictures, if you have any please forward (E-maill) them to me and I'll print and send them along...just another excuse to go up the hill. If there is another PE next year, Newcombs would like to be included as one of the stops...we'll get preferred parking :D.

Man, you guys showed the SoCal spirit and did this ride up right! Now everyone needs to make sure you donate to the cause.

As George already mentioned, I'm way bummed that this event happened to arrive in the San Diego area just as I was out of town visiting family. I'll just have to let that go and look forward to the next one. I can tell from all the pictures that everyone had a great time, lots of smiles and satisfied riders; I expect the pie in Julian had something to do with that.

So glad you guys had a good time and had a great turn out for this event. If there was a larger group to escort the bag and represent the ST-Owners, I haven't seen pictures of the event.

Great job guys! :bow1::bow1::bow1::bow1::bow1:
