Attached are pictures of the STeed Sticks that I had powder coated after install. The color for the Powder Coat was a 60% gloss black -- this matches the engine guard cowls very well. Cost of powder coating was $25. STeed STicks cost = $250 delivered. Purchased from: rdk4@comcaST.net

My only mistake was not having the portion of the hardware taped up where the highway pegs attach to the clevis bolt. I had to spend some time with a Dremel tool to remove the powder coat so the parts would fit properly again.

Total install time was about 1.5 hours - including making the cutouts on the engine guard cowls. For this you are provided templates which I sprayed with 3M Spray Mount Artist's Adhesive to hold the templates to the cowls until the cutout pattern was marked.

The Powder Coating turned out very nice.

If you study the next to last photo there is a pretty good shot of the gap between the painted portion of the painted cowl and the STeed STick. I don't think it is a problem. I played with it a couple of times sitting on the center stand and they are pretty easy to extend with the toe of the boot. If you are going to hit anything, it would probably be the black plastic cowl guard cover - which is pretty tough.

It is even easier to retract the pegs. Just use the heal of your boot to pull them back.

Of course - the instructions that come with the STeed STicks caution you about extending and retracting the pegs while riding. There are some other common sense warnings about not having them extended when corning aggressively.

Now,,, we need to see some wear marks on the bottom side of the Steed Sticks and at what angle contact was made...

Wes, Great job. The black P/C makes all the difference. How hard was the install? Was there much cutting involved in the process and how long did it take? Thanks...

The entire install took me about 1.5 hours - 2 hours. The only cutting is a small cutout on the engine guard cowls. The brackets that the STeed STicks are provided with mount to the engine guards that are right under the engine guard cowl. 1 screw takes off the engine guard cowls.

This is definately a job any novice can easily do. The instructions provided are very clear and you are also provided with templates that show exactly where to make the cuts in the engine guard cowls.

Attached are photos in the riding position.

And no, I don't ride in shorts -- just for pictures in the driveway on a hot July 4 afternoon.

Thanks so much for the pics. Those are exactly what I need. Coupled with the Russell seat and backrest, the pegs should make the ST near perfect for the superslab..............I take that back.........perfect for the big slab.

Wes: Just curious as to how tall you are. Wondering if the sticks are a little too far forwards for those of us that are vertically challenged - although there seems to be a lot of 5' 8" or thereabouts riders in here.

I am 6'2" -- My legs are not extended fully when reaching the STeed STicks. They are going to provide some welcome stretch room on long highway runs.

Also, I have my Sargent seat set in the highest - farthest back setting.

I don't think you would have trouble reaching the pegs if you are 5'8" unless you have the seat in the highest setting.

Well,,, I can see your point there Wes... But,,, at least thanks for trying!!! ;)

With the way those turned out,,, I can have my Steed Sticks,,, AND keep my Charter membership in the "Anti-Chrome Coalition" too!!! :D

They look really good... I think they will be more noticeable on the Red compared to the Blue as on the Blue they look very Stealth... So,,, I am hoping the increased speed the red produces cuts down on visibility issues...

I was concerned that my naturally quicker :04biker: STeed might loose its speed edge over the :03biker: and :biker: due to the additional aerodynamic drag caused by my new STealth STeed STicks -- but I decided to go for the comfort anyway.

This anti-chrome coalition is a new switch for me. I sold my last chromed Harley beast this year -- it was gathering dust in the garage ever since I bought the ST a year ago.

If I purchased the STeed Sticks, that's exactly what I would do with them (powder coat) ... look great and blends in better with the ST (IMHO).

However, .... I'm still very concerned about the hard parts touching down on a full lean on a less than perfect curve (flat crown, reverse camber, etc.). I've been waiting for Mike Roberts "Wings" for quite sometime but it doesn't look like it will happen - at least not for this year's riding season. Below is his reply to my email regarding the status of the "wings":

I wish I could say the wings are in production, but the guy that was going to run them backed out. There are too many orders for me to make and not enough for a machine shop to give a good price. I'm also still working on orders from last year for the ST1100. Due to health problems I'm not able to run the machine very long, but I'm still looking for someone to take over the process.

What do you think ... Will the "STeed Sticks" hit on a hard lean?

I can not envision that I would be riding hard enough to scrap these on the ground-- but if you are concerned about it -- then I would suggest you not get them-- and by the way -- you are a better rider than I am. :bow1:

I THINK,,, they will scrape...

The Steed Sticks would be far safer in the wacky scenario that has played through my mind while thinking about which of the 2 ideas I wanted for my bike...

The VERY,,, cool Wings,,, or what seems to be more comfortable Steeds...

This,,, is what decided it for me... I was thinking about those times when Bad Things Happen...

Lets say,,, a deer darts out and crashes low into the Steed/Wings...

Me??? I would rather have a rounded bar with rubber thingy's on it than a piece of thin,,, almost sharp,,, serrated edged steel whacking me in the foot...

Neither are good thoughts,,, just 1 seems better to live with Comfort/added safety over cool IMHO...

[QUOTE=Austin city limits]I THINK,,, they will scrape...

You are right Terry -- I think in the extended postion - they would scrape. I was thinking of how they would scrape in the retracted position and you would really have to be laying the bike over hard.

I probably will only use them for long runs down the interstate highways.
STeed STicks are like any other farkle you add to the bike. You should use common sense and realize that you have modified the bike.

I have seen guys on Harley's riding in town in traffic with their feet up on highway pegs -- this is an example of how not to be safe.

Same thing with the STeed STicks -- I think they provide a great level of comfort on a long ride -- but in the twisties - they need to be tucked up under the bike -- and even then, if you ride hard, you may not want to consider these on your bike. I just know that given my riding style I can not envision a time that I would lean far enough to be within 1.5 inches of scaping the engine guard cowls.

It looks like "IF" you forget to retrack your STeeds,,, when/if contact is made they would fold instead of bite...

I can not think that in the retracked position,,, even THIS GUY,,, would be scraping!!! Well,,, maybe he would,,, but I think I am safe... I will be interested though to know that the Pegs drag,,, BEFORE the folded in STeeds do... This is a question I WILL need to know...

Charlie says it is possible to scrape the engine guard cowls (black plastic covers over the engine guards) without laying down the bike. If someone is cornering hard enough to do that then they would be hitting the retracted STeed STicks before they got to the plastic guards. In that case - it would not be pretty.

Tell you what WES,,, in this picture of you,,, I am not sure the Steed sticks will hit,,, before the pegs do... If that is so,,, that is far better than I even hoped for...

I took a look at the Speed Sticks and honestly think with my 25 years experience in owning a machine shop and making motorcycle parts, that about $169.95 should be the going rate. I have a set that look very similar that I made 4 months ago for my own ST-1300 and we did a cost factoring on the part and came up with a nice profit at $170.00.
My only concern is the liability of one of you spinning like a top on the peg on a tight turn.

Give me some feedback and maybe we will release our model.

Also I just released our passenger foot peg extender if your girlfriend or wife needs leg relief. http://motorcyclelarry.com/st1300_footpeg.asp
