View Full Version : Dear friend: Donna Jean

Our friend Donna Jean was admitted to the hospital this morning about 1am. It appears as if she may have had a stoke in the night as her left side is limp and she is displaying brain trauma related symptoms.
The one good part is that Donna Jean works at Loma Linda University Medical Center as an LVN. She is being well cared for by the staff who love her very much, as we all do.
The very terrible thing is that Donna's baby girl is only 10 days old. Donna just brought her baby home last Thursday. She has four boys already and so little Abigail is the pride of the tribe.
This is a huge trauma to this family and who knows what's in store next.
Scripture says that All Creation Declares His Splendor, how that will be in this situation we can only Trust & Believe we will see.
Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

What are the boys' ages, and are they involved in any groups that widen the circle of support? Also it may be missed by co-workers, but if they'll share this with people in the Health and Emergency fields they interface with, a wider support system is possible? This is always tough, and not an isolated event for families. Yet in some cases much help is possible, that may not be obvious to those close to the sadness.

We have been at LLUMC most of this afternoon. The hospital has moved Donna Jean to ICU to monitor her brain function each hour.
What we know is that she is doing well. Not out of the woods by any stretch but certainly a huge improvement from yesterrday.
Another thing in play here is the Divine. I cannot express what is happening within and throughout the family members. Incredible is too small of a word.
I did not get to see Donna on this visit although Mrs. Gruuvy did. I did get to hang out with Abby who is 11 days old today. She melts your heart.
The support network here is huge. Between her work mates, football boosters, church pals and extended family they are all well covered.
Her boys, 16, 14, 12 & 9 are fantastic. They will not allow pessimism. When they walked into the day room yesterday it was as if David's Mighty Men had come for business and they brought His Presence with them.
There is a long recovery time ahead but we are certain that there is a Hope and Miracle in the works.
Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers as this continues. It's the dull times that remove Hope. They need to see Hope and Glory.
Thank you all for your kindness expressed here.

Amazing. Simply Amazing.
Donna is sitting up and this morning walked a few steps in her ICU room. She can say "Abigail" and "Jesus loves me".
Still a long road as she cannot write or express herself without some confusion looks across her face but so much change that it is simply Amazing.
We are all so happy and the Doctor's are baffled by such a powerful change from Friday morning when she came into Emergency.
Certainly not out-of-the-woods but much closer to the clearing than imagined would happen. Such a clear revelation of Power and Grace.
Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts and please keep her family in your prayers as they prepare to transition her recovery to a convalescent home or in-home care provider.

Between the Divine and Modern Medical Miracles, all will be well. They've come a long way with stroke procedures since my dad had his in '64.

UPDATE:
Donna Jean is now at home. She has recovered very quickly and graciously. I am so amazed at how she is doing now.
Donna was sent to a rehabilitation center (also at Loma Linda) where they expected her to be for at least 3 weeks. She was there 5 days and they sent her home with a good report.
Donna still cannot speak. She is still in vocational therapy (Donna is an Nurse by trade also) and speech therapy. She can speak fine if she is not trying, kinda of impulsive response, but if she tried she cannot.
The Doctors still do not know the extent of what was lost but she is walking (WOW !!) and moving well and caring from her infant Abby.
We are so pleased and so thankful that she has been Blessed with a good recovery.
Donna's situation has healed deep divides within her family. This has brought very good changes to their household.
I expect to report that she is fully recovered here soon and will post a picture or two with her permission.
Thank you for your prayers, thoughts and concerns. She isn't 100% but she is certainly on her way.

I called the other day to check up on Donna Jean. Guess who answered the phone ? Donna herself.
She is home. Speaking with effort but improving everyday, and able to perform her usual home routine.
She is not close to going back to work.
The best part is that she is with her little girl and Abby is in her Mother's arms again.
This is huge. A full on stroke victim who has been blessed with a speedy recovery and grace.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
