Due to popular demand (meaning more than one person) and a committee agreement (I had dirt on the others) an RTE will be held Saturday, October 4 2008 AT NOON at Hotel Manor in Slate Run, Pennsylvania. Those that have been here will know why they should come back. Those that were at PA Grand Canyon STOC will know the roads are worthy of it. Those that haven't been here, should be. FOG has been telling you all along it's a good place to be, that the roads are great. Add in the fall foliage factor, cooler weather, and possibly last decent ride for awhile, makes it worthwhile to put it on your calendar pronto.
Here's the web site with details! http://www.hotel-manor.com

Anybody that wants to camp, feel free to do so. Lot of state parks around, and I'd doubt they will be very busy that time of year.
Me? I'll be sleeping in my own bed.:)

Gene- let's see where the event falls, then look at nearby campgrounds. Keep in mind it will be a little cold at night by then. :snow1: LOL
I guess we will need a giant screen cave man TV !! maybe a cabin would be better if temps are that bad ?

I like this cabin idea !
I will plan on being there, unless the wife and I are in Italy riding :D
A couple of suggestions for lodging, the White deer motel, just South of Williamsport is clean and reasonable. As a bonus it is in the middle of a lot of great roads.
For eating location, Yesterday's in Renovo is a great place, nothing fancy, good food, home made soups, and good pie. Orlandos in Muncy Pa has GREAT food, not really upscale, but not cheap either. The Bullfrog Brewery in Williamsport has decent food and great beverages, if you make plans to get back to the motel on something other than 2 wheels.
Scoot, Wife and I rode through town today, about 1ish. Made a nice loop to the north and back to WP for the night.

http://www.happyacresresort.netWell Boys... I have already expressed my intent to return to Wellsboro in early Oct. so I thought I'd stay at the Canyon Motel again...Unless you want a more rustic place to have a base of operations from...There was mention a while back abt a place that was a campground and rented cabins...most of the cabins were big enough to sleep 5 ppl...but thats abt 35 miles from Wellsboro......The Place was called Happy Acres Campground in Waterville

Now that Happy acres is open again, it's a great place to locate. In addition to the private cabins, there's a state park campground about 500 yards up the road, with (heated!) washrooms & showers. Breakfast & dinner at Happy acres takes the guesswork out of where to eat. I happens that there's is a ton of twisting little back roads, the kind about 1-1/2 lanes wide with no center stripe, no traffic, maybe a few curious dogs, that one can happily get lost on for a 100 miles or more. If you want to rip in the twisties, there's plenty of opportunity for that as well.
Now having said my piece, I have to decide whether to join this event or re-schedule a planned week in North Georgia, where there really is only one kind of road: well paved, twisting, roller coaster. It's Heaven, I tell ya.

Since I grew up in Williamsport and now live about 10 miles SW, I'd be happy to show you folks some roads around here. Hickory Smoked Ribs? Try Mill Hall, PA right where the road (RT 150) splits near WalMart. Inside and outside dining tables are set up.
Happy Acres Campground is the place you ought to be. Why go to a stuffy motel when you can be out in the mountains with the fresh pine scented air. There is someone new running the restaurant as the last ones running the place took off and pilfered a lot of the equipment. If you want the best steak in the area, I suggest Hoss's Steak (and seafood) House on Third Street between Williamsport and Montoursville. I also always get a great pizza at Pizza Hut just up the street a few blocks. Want Italian? There's The Olive Tree restaurant. And, my wife's favorite place to eat, the Country Cupboard just North of Lewisburg on Route 15 is always good quality food and decently priced. Be sure and pick up some of their sticky buns on the way to the cabin. Also, on the last turn before the Little Pine State Park is a bar/restaurant at the Waterville Hotel. And be sure to check the tall and beautiful sisters working at McConnells Store nearby. Those coming from the east, why take I-80? Use Route 118 and deviate to the Central Hotel for lunch. It's SW of Ricketts Glen State Park. That's a great place to hike and see the waterfalls, if there has been adequate rainfall. Any questions, just ask. Ron

Waterville is on RT 44 and it's where you turn to go to the Little Pine Creek dam area and the campgrounds are a few miles up the valley. Use caution on that road unless you've been on it before. When you see the dam, imagine water pouring over the spillway 6 feet deep. I have a photo of that, taken from a Piper Aztec in June of 1972. Any ladies coming for this ride? If so, they will want to go to the Woolrich Outdoors Store about 12 miles away. You'll like the roads in that area too.

OK FOLKS!!!!
Here's the location....... Hotel Manor in Slate Run PA. It's 25-30 miles south of Wellsboro on Rt.414 right along Pine Creek. http://www.hotel-manor.com
If you are thinking of coming south on 287 from Wellsboro, then hitting 414, beware that 414 between 287 to about Cedar Run is about a lane and a half wide at best, and on the rough (but paved) side. You're not going to want to be late and trying to make time on that part of the road. Also, there is a dirt road from Rt. 44 right down to Slate Run but I don't know how it would be for an ST.
And, when you're on 414 in Slate Run, the Hotel Manor is on the OTHER side of Pine Creek from you.
Planning on lunch at Noon.

I just got back from a ride with a different group this afternoon and we had lunch at Happy Acres. They had a grill set up outside the restaurant. When is the last time you had fresh, rather than frozen, french fries. Wow, were they good! A red tailed hawk flew across the road in front of me and perched on a branch at eye level, not 20 feet off the road. It stayed there until we all passed by and we got a real good look.
:03biker:Still Have the 82' GS650G. In the summer it gets as many miles as the ST. It's the perfect bike for my Tuesday ride, when I meet a group of retirees. We have breakfast and then ride for lunch and till 4:00. Shady Maple is the breakfast of choice in Blue Ball, Pa. The Suzuki is a little cooler than the ST.

I talked to the guy with the cabin near the Hotel Manor. He says it's just a fishing shack and too small for a herd. He works for the highway department and he told me they were tar and chipping RT44 from Haneyville down 44 to above Waterville. Not good. RT 664 is nice though.

Hey Scoot..this RTE how many days are we looking at ?If is more than 1 nite then staying at the Hotel Manor might not cut it...I wouldnt want anything less than 2 days to revisit and ride this area again...heck it'll take me 2 days to ride there and return home.I'm not one to do this as a single days ride either. Are there any other places to stay in Slate Run?...If not then I might go back to my original plan and stay at the Canyon Motel in Wellsboro...and just meet up with youse guys early on...actually I am liking that idea the more that I think abt it...whats another 35 miles?I am already accustomed to Wellsboro and think its an excellent base of operations.

Hi Ben--
For me, a RTE is a one day thing. Meet, eat lunch as a group, ride home. That's me. If you have the time and desire to make a long week-end out of it, go for it!:) As you said, there's plenty of roads to ride around here.
Hotel Manor is pretty much it in Slate Run. If you google Pine Creek or Wellsboro lodging, there should be plenty of places come up. B&B's and small motels are the norm. Larger places such as Williamsport and State College have the bigger chains, and, of course, bigger $$$! They are still close enough to the good roads to use as a base and be on the 2 laners in 30 minutes or less.
Will see ya there!

Ugh ! They just screwed up more of Route 44 with tar and chips. I'd sure like to strangle the S.O.B. that came up with the idea in the first place. This is between Jersey Shore and Route 15. Use caution. Even after it's been laid down for a few weeks you never know just how much grip you will have when transitioning form smooth asphalt to rough gravel. I wish they would at least use the same size stone as they do in black top pavement. Would that be asking too much? Someone was killed in a car wreck a month ago, up near Canton I think, when they went around a curve and lost control on the stones.

Don't forget the federal prison..........................that said, been staying there on my trips down there for several years, never any noise from golfers, smell, or convicts for that matter. The trucks on 15 are the only thing you hear.

Just be careful on some of those roads if you run them Saturday nights or anytime Sunday. That's when the Amish go visiting in their horse and buggies!

Hitting an Amish buggy on a blind curve or a hill is always a possibility. But you also have to beware of "equine emmissions" which are not subject to control. I was in a large group ride and someone on a Harley slid into guard rails because of "S*** happens."

For anyone interested, a 9-11 commemorative ride will start at 6PM from Bowman Field in Williamsport, PA. Registration starts at 5PM, with a service at 5:30. The ride goes to Hughesville, Muncy, Montgomery and South Williamsport. They are hoping for 1000 bikes this year and the weather looks perfect with temps around 73 degrees. I went on the last two and it was quite a patriotic experience. I recommend bringing ear plugs as the HD types are the most numerous and loud pipes are keeping these guys alive, I guess. It sure ain't their good looks. The ball park is along West Fourth Street at Lycoming Creek. If you get close, just follow some other bikers.

The last mile or two at the bottom is broken pavement. From 44 to there is 1 lane (barely) and dirt. Don't know quality of dirt or how steep it might be coming down over the mountain. Maybe find a topo map?
Maybe i could check it out before the 4th.

Refer to post #77.
Yes, lunch is salads, soups, and sandwiches. Which is pretty much what I expected at lunch.
If we waited till after 4 though, I don't think we would be having close to 20 people planning to be there! Having it at NOON allows people to ride 4-5 hours to get there, eat, ride 4-5 hours back home before dark and be sitting on the couch with wifey and the kids watching college football or whatever else trips your trigger on a Saturday night.
Will we be seeing you there?

Yes, I would like to come and meet some of you. I thought there would be some more road exploring than just up and back and a meal. Huh/ Whazzat? My ears are STill ringing from the loud pipe crowd. Even ear plugs didn't stop all the noise. This was my third 9-11 ride and it does get bigger every year. Everyone should try to make it at least once to experience the tremendous pride and patriotism displayed by everyone waving flags along the route. Well, except for that one silver haired, burned out, ex-hippie holding the 9-11 Truth.org sign between Hughesville and Muncy. I hoped she saw my hand gesture as I rode past.

George can you suggest motels in the area is Williamsport closer then Wellsboro? I am going to shack up somwhere Saturday night and head home Sunday.
Williamsport is maybe a little further away than Wellsboro, but can make better time getting from Slate Run to Williamsport, some 4 lane highway to Williamsport. There's been several motels near Williamsport mentioned here, White Deer Motel, for one. There's probably 4-5 chain motels in Williamsport, and the Genetti Hotel right downtown. Lock Haven and Lamar are west of Slate Run, we have Comfort Inn, Hampton and Best Western here. South of Williamsport on Rt 15 about 25 miles is Lewisburg, probably 6-8 chain places near there. But, Lewisburg is home of Bucknell, so will depend if they have a home football game that week-end. Also, Lycoming College is in Williamsport, so same thing might apply there too.
Let me know how you make out.

Time to decide. Do I or don't I?
So far, I've got about 15 that gave pretty definite "Yes's". There's another 5-8 sitting on the fence. And there's probably a couple that never replied, or haven't seen it yet, that have/will decide "Yea, I'm in".
I don't need a carved in stone number, but would like to call the place early next week and give them a guesstimate of how many they should expect.
The 15 that are "Come Hell or high water, I'll be there", you're already counted. If you've been on the fence, give me your best guess if you'll make it or not.
Again: Hotel Manor in Slate Run, Noon, Saturday October 4th
And if riding early or late, watch out for the :deer1: and :tb1:
See Ya!

Just got back from a week long trip on the ST1100. Sayre, Pa, to Montreal. Montreal to Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor to Lincoln, NH. Then home. Planned to go to Burlington, VT, for the last weekend, but with the weekend being a wash-out, no fun there. The whole trip was about 2k miles, and only the last day had some rain.
The ST1100 was amazing. The new suspension from Traxxion+Penske totally changes the handling and ride. Expensive, but worth it.

There, now you made me cry again.
No, I won't. SWAMBO is in school that day for her Master's (only 4 more years...), so I'm watching our three children. I'm not rich enough to afford a babysitter from 7am until 7pm.

If we max out the restaurant seating, I'll head back to Waterville. I want to try the Waterville Hotel restaurant. It's under new ownership and has recently been renovated and has reopened in the last few weeks. Also, Happy Acres at the Little Pine Dam has real french fries, not the cardboard junk most places serve.

Great trip today. Enjoyable conversation with all! I rode the GS today, thinking I would hit some of the dirt roads, which I did.
After lunch, leaving town, I hooked up behind a threesome of ST13s, on 414W (which actually runs SE at that point!). We all turned north on 44, going up the winding hill. Great fun, but the road surface was recently chipped. The surface was not loose, but there were many patches that did, and then didn't, have the chip. Looked like they washed out in rain. It felt like tar snakes, and was quite unsettling.
Top of the hill, the group of three ST13s turned south on 644 to their destination. I continued north on 44, looking for Hyner park/point, which I found a short while later. Made the trip to top of the point, then continued home up 44 to Galeton, and on from there.

George and LuAnn,
We almost turned around half to 2/3s of the way there because we hit rain for maybe 20 minutes to a half hour. Bob asked me if I wanted to turn around and I said what for we are almost there. Glad we continued because the lunch spot was beautiful and glad to meet all the ST owners group. Beautiful weather even though was a little chilly at start.
LuAnn thanks for picking the day. George thanks for staging the event. Bob and I continued on to Hyner View and the Grand Canyon which I had never seen before even
though we use to go camping in Potter County (Ole Bull State Park and Kettle Creek) years ago. Hyner Point was gorgeous. That night we stayed at nephews house in Berwick, Pa. and came home today. So we had a nice weekend. 499.9 miles.
Think about it, maybe this could be a yearly lunch run. So next year could be the 2nd
annual. Thanks again, Sue and Bob Dantinne
